Chapter 2

This feeling...I can't stand it...I feel...so...alone...Kate's there, she always will be...but...I'm left with no one to love... why did she leave me?

"Oh my gosh, are you okay Jakob?" Kate asked him, very worried from his expressionless face.

"Kate, I really don't feel like talking today, okay?" He kept walking on his way to his locker, trying to avoid her.

"I don't care, tell me. Don't you trust me? I thought we were friends.." she became upset, and soon she was asking herself what she had done to him.

Best friends..."I do trust you Kate, it's just... something happened yesterday, something bad."

"You can tell m-"

"Liz broke up with me! Okay? Gosh..." to hear Liz tell him was one thing, but to admit it and say it out loud was horrible. He quickened his step to class, leaving Kate shocked. He wasn't running away from her, he was avoiding the tears he knew would come if he didn't get his mind off of...her.

He reached his first class of the day-chemistry. After taking his seat, he took out his chemistry text book and quickly flipped it to a random page and began to read. He similarly very attentively listened to the teacher when she talked, since it was a great distraction, but he knew the feeling was there, but he was too afraid to confront it.

Kate took her seat next to Jakob, as she always did at lunch. She was beginning to get really worried for him.

"Jake...look I know it's hard, I've been through it too...is there anything I can do?" She looked at him probably the most honestly worried look someone could give.

He folded his arms, looked at her, and then stared at the blank white of the lunch table. "No, I... I just need to get over it...It hurts because I loved her...I really did..." he trailed off.

"I know Jakob, but she wasn't good for you anyways, you can find someone better, and I'll always be here for you," she smiled and her tail wrapped around her leg again.

"I know... yeah, I guess you're right. I need someone who loves me back as much as I love them," he sighed as a lunch tray noisily fell onto the table next to him. He looked over his shoulder. _Chris...ugh...just who I need right now..._he thought, annoyed.

"Hey Jake. You okay? You look pretty drained today," he said, giving that same worried look Kate had just seconds earlier.

"Yes," he said it sharply, not at all wanting to explain everything, especially to Chris. "I'm fine, don't worry about it okay?"

"Um...okay, hey guys, I was wondering if you maybe would like to go with me somewhere. Is that okay?" You could see the excitement building in his green eyes.

"I can't. Sorry," Jakob said it fast and coldly. I don't feel like going anywhere with anyone feeling like this... especially if it's Chris.

Kate became annoyed at Jakob's rudeness and hit him on the side of his shoulder with the back of her hand with a "How could you say that? What did he do wrong?" look.

"Ow! What'd you do that for?"

Kate peered to the side of Jakob to see Chris. "I can come Chris, and Jake's coming with me. Right, Jake?" She grinded her teeth looking back at Jake at the last two words.

Jakob leaned in towards Katie and whispered "I DON'T want to go with him. And not after what happened last night!"

Kate opened her mouth as to say something back when Chris interrupted her. "What happened last night?" He asked, smiling with his tail gently swaying back and forth. Jake looked at Chris and then back at Kate angrily.

"FINE! I'll go, what're we going to?" Jake folded his arms and looked at Chris, waiting for the dumbest answer ever.

"Um...I had these tickets to go see a concert, but we can do something else if you want. The concert's tonight at 8 at the Hangout."

"Okay Chris," Kate said it so sweetly. "We'll go to the concert with you. See you tonight."

"Really? Awesome! That's so cool guys!" He had a lot of trouble hiding his excitement, his tail started wagging (luckily no one was sitting behind him) and his eyes lit up.

Come on Kate, pick up, pick up. Jakob was trying to call Kate and tell her that he couldn't make it.

"Hello?"

"Katie? It's me, Jake. I wanted to tell you that I can't go to the concert tonight, I'm really sorry but my mom said no." He had come up with what to say already, and he surprised even himself at how it was hard to tell if he was lying or not.

"Jake, I know you're lying," but, Kate wasn't fooled. "I'm sorry to say this, but you're going to have to, because I can't," it was clear that she was sorry, but Jake didn't care.

"WHAT?! No way! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, fricking way, is there even a chance I am going to that concert with him alone!"

"You have to. He's expecting both of us, if he goes there alone, can't you imagine how that would make him feel? You have to, for him," she was strict, and her voice made Jakob feel like he'd have to go or the next day he'd leave school with a million of those little cat scratches on him, on his face. He loved his face too much for that.

"But, but I don't want to!" He whined, Kate could already hear it in his voice that he was going. "Why can't you come?"

"I have to go with my parents to see my great-grandma's funeral, it's really important. It's tomorrow, but it's two states away so we have take the plane tonight. Im really sorry Jake.."

"Ugh, fine I'll go, but I am only doing this for you since you made me!" He said, clearly a bit angered at what he now had to do.

"Thanks Jake. See you on Monday, good luck tonight, don't do anything to upset him, alright? Be nice."

Great, more orders to listen to, as if going wasn't bad enough... "Okay, bye Kate," he said fast, wanting to end the conversation before she made him do anything else. Lucky for him she finally hung up. Gosh, I really don't want to do this... he went and sat on the edge of his bed and put his forehead in his hands and thought about what to do.

"Jake!" Chris was waving his had frantically in front of The Hangout. Jake noticed him and looked to the side, rolled his eyes, and sighed. What a weird person.. I have to be with him alone for soo long... this is going to suck..but, I told Kate I would, I have to in order to keep my face the way it is.

"Yeah, yeah, I SEE you, stop yelling!" Jakob said, clearly annoyed.

"Where's Kate? Isn't she coming? She said she was," he folded his arms and his gray tail stopped wagging, along with his ears falling opposite ways showing his dissapointment.

"Long story, but I'm here! Yaaaay! right?" He said with apparent sarcasm and waved his arms around at the 'Yaaaay!'

"Oh, that's fine. I was just wondering. Here's your ticket," he handed Jakob a yellow little ticket stating the name of the concert, the place, date, and a whole bunch of numbers that Jakob didn't know what were for. "Come on, let's get going or we'll miss the first song!" Out of Jakob's surprise, Chris grabbed his wrist and yanked him to the bouncer. What the ... ? Jakob then saw a group of people, two of which looking at him and whispering something, that did it.

"Let go!" Jakob said, a little more harshly than he intended, yet he used his other hand to scrape off Chris' hand.

"What did I do?" Chris stopped in his tracks and looked at Jakob with such an innocent look it instantly made Jakob feel terribly guilty.

"Just...don't do that, alright? I...I don't like it..." Jakob stated, rubbing his wrist as if to get off something dirty.

"Oh, sorry...but anyways, we should really get going now," he said, still sounding rather hurt. "I think it's already starting." They gave their tickets to the bouncer guy and walked in. _The music's really loud...owwwie...my ears.._Jakob covered his ears and waited slowly for his ears to adjust.

"Hey, this stuff's not that bad actually Chris," he stated a little pleased considering he was expecting really bad music. It was pop music.

"Why? What'd you expect?" He gave a wolfish grin and tilted his head a little to the side. "Hard rock music?" He giggled at saying that.

"Well, not exactly, just something...bad...but this is actually pretty nice," he smiled and couldn't help his foot from tapping the beat.

"Glad you like it, Jake," he smiled and started moving up through the crowd to get closer to the main stage, and started dancing, but that's not what scared Jake, he was actually good at it. His body moved quite well with the actual words and rhythm of the song, and you could tell he had experiance.

"You've done this before? How can you...dance?" Jake was really surprised.

"Oh, I've been to concerts before, and I love to dance... can't you?" He talked while still dancing, just milder than before, and raised an eyebrow at Jakob as he waited for an answer.

"Um...uh...," his voice got so quiet Chris could barely hear him through the sound of the music and cheering crowd. "No... I'm not."

"Aw, that's okay...HEY! I have an idea," Chris extended his hand, leaning forward a bit. "Dance with me," he said it so easily and with such a simple and pure smile, Jakob never realized that when Chris did that he felt something stir deep within him.

"What? No way, that's...that's just..weird..." Jakob quickly took two steps back and put his hands up in front of him that almost looked like he was begging "Don't hurt me! Please!"

"Oh, come on Jake! It'll be fun, and what's weird about it? It's just two friends dancing together, haven't you ever danced with just a friend?" His hand remained extended and he kept his smile on.

"But... no. that's just too weird for me, with...you," he really was starting to feel so bad, he didn't want to hurt Chris' bright spirit. That didn't last long as Chris yanked him and brought him next to him. "Do what I do," he said.

Even though he had told Chris not to grab him minutes earlier, and he felt very uncomfortable, something told him to listen, and...he did. "Hah! I'm doing it!" Jakob's doubts faded away instantly as he continued following Chris' steps and moves.

"Yeah, you might have a talent for dancing Jake," he smiled at Jakob, and one of his ears fell to the side cutely. "I had people teaching me and it took me a lot longer than that-a LOT longer, to do it, and you actually do it well. Nice." There was something that made the uneasy atmosphere between them dissapear, and for the first time since Liz left Jake, he felt...happy.

Last night for Jakob had turned out to be a blast, and he was happy that after the weekend, on Monday, Kate let him keep his face.

"I'm actually really happy that you actually listened to me Jake, I thought you wouldn't go, or be mean to him at least, but from what I've heard, you both really enjoyed it. That's great!" She gave her very feline-like smile and her tail moved very slowly back and forth showing her simple happiness.

"What? What did you hear?" Jake asked, clearly uneasy of what she may have heard.

"Just that Chris taught you how to dance and that you ended up being good at it. Don't worry so much, cheer up a bit Jakob," she bumped him in his side with her elbow, still smiling.

"I'm perfectly fine, it's just I didn't want you to think something different. I had no idea what you were told," he said to her, putting on his act that made him seem really stuck up and smart when he wasn't.

"Yeah, yeah," she said sarcastically, now putting aside their conversation and thinking about something else that was actually important. As Jake continued walking through the hallway with Kate, he noticed Andy again talking to his football teammates.

"HEY! Andy! What's up?" Jake asked as he walked away from Kate and up to Andy.

Andy's ear twitched with annoyance. "You again? Nothing's up, go away," this hurt Jakob for some reason, a reason that he himself didn't know, but it did. At that same moment he noticed Andy's large biceps since he was wearing a shirt with no sleeves at all. They were so big that he could really see them well, they showed right threw Andy's red fur. And for foxes, Andy had a really ruby orange hue in his fur.He must be really good at throwing the football...

"Oh...alright. Sorry I bothered you then..," Jake moped, walking slowly back to Kate and with his head hung looking quite dissapointed.

"You know, I don't know why you actually try to have a conversation with that empty-headed nimrod," Kate declared, saying the offensive, namecalling words with more emphasis than the others, hoping Andy would hear.

"Naw, it's fine, it's just because he was busy when I interrupted him, that's all," Jake was back to his usual self, obviously having using that as an excuse to avoid the realization that Andy really didn't like him. He again got that weird feeling in his stomach. That's so weird, and it's always after I talk to Andy...weird...must just be a coincidence, or some random stomach cramps maybe.

"Hey, mom? Can I ask you something?" Jake asked as he walked into his house and took his back pack off and as usual put it on the couch. He walked into the kitchen where his mom was already starting to make dinner.

"Of course, honey," she had that same sweetness in her voice that Kate did often, Jakob liked that, he could feel it's sincerity. Kate will be a great mom to her children, ANYWAYS...

"Um, have you ever gotten a weird stomach pain after talking to someone? Just wondering.."

" Oh, that just means you like someone sweety, it's perfectly normal for people your age," she smiled at Jakob, removing her gaze from the pot that she was cooking in to him, but Jakob wasn't paying attention to her, that wasn't what he wanted to hear from her. His head felt light and he leaned onto their island and put his head in his hands. No... that can't be...
