#1 of Trevor's Journey

Trevor and Grovyle find themselves stuck in the Old Chateau. Here is origin of their bond.

'I really did it this time!' Trevor thought, his heart pounding in his throat as he began running. Every step he took kicked up the surrounding dust around him, not that it mattered much. The Litwick he was holding emitted an intense flame, and yet it still felt like the shadows in this house could never be dispersed. He could hardly see where he was going as he rounded the corner of this seemingly never ending hallway. Trevor paused and listened. Nothing.

Sighing, Trevor reached into his pocket and pulled out his Pokéball. 'I'm really sorry to do this buddy, but I could really use the backup.' After closing his eyes and gently kissing the top of the ball, Trevor tossed the ball just in front of him, on the edge of Litwicks' light. Standing now in this abandoned and dusty mansion was Grovyle, looking around disinterested. Grovyle never cared about being indoors, the lack of sunlight felt stifling, as if he was breathing a room of recycled and just safe enough air. Even the moonlight was enough for him to feel nourished, well on a full moon at the very least. Here he was though, stuck inside at night, not even the moonlight is enough to light up the dingy hallway. Grovyle wanted to be mad that he was pulled from the nice artificial, yet very nourishing, light from inside of his Pokéball, but then he noticed Trevor's face.

....

Trevor sprinted through the school doors just as the bells of the Pokémon Trainer School rang. He never cared much about learning which evolution stones worked for which pokemon, and he especially didn't care about having those pretend Pokémon battles with his classmates. They only cared about winning, finding any sort of strategy that would lead them to pull ahead of the fight.

'Come on man, you only have a few more years of this before you're allowed to go out on your own,' Trevor muttered to himself, 'just keep it up enough to get your starter Pokémon and then you can finally do what you're meant to.'

He decided to take the long way home today. Fortree isn't a huge town, but you can get away with finding all sorts of fun ways home through the trees. As Trevor balanced along tree branches, taking careful consideration with just how much weight his body was able to dish out. He usually liked to sit high up enough to see the Weather Institute, heights never bothered him like they did his friends who would never dare join him in such a daring feat. Today, however, he was going to climb the tallest tree. Just to try something new today.

....

Treecko watched with intense curiosity, this young trainer begin to scale the Tree of the Waystone. He was not sure he has seen any human ever try to make the climb that he does daily in order to get to those delicious Leppa Berries. Don't trainers have anything better to do than to look for Pokémon this high up? Aren't there enough Poochyena roaming around the grass to keep busy, does he really need something to prove that bad by coming up here?

As Trevor slowly made his way up the Tree of the Waystone, Treecko could not help but be impressed with how easily this trainer was navigating the labyrinth of branches and leaves. For Trevor, he only had one destination in mind - up. Treecko watched the branches fight back against this unusual intruder, slapping back at him and causing minor cuts and gashes. Treecko remembered watching those young trainers playing outside the gym in town. When they fell, no matter how far or minor, they immediately cried as if they were just hit by an X-Scissor from a Scyther. This boy though, just kept going. Treecko's mother would flip out if she knew that he was starting to gain some respect for this boy.

....

Aware of the cuts he was going to have to explain away to his mom later, Trevor just kept climbing. He could hear the chirps of some Taillows not too far away. He must be close. After needing to jump and pull himself up on one last branch, he finally broke the canopy. He couldn't see for just a moment, he had gotten used to the darkness under the trees, the thick canopy stealing the sunlight from the ground below. He knew that this was the tallest tree in all of Fortree, maybe even all of Hoenn, and yet he was still shocked at the scale of everything. He squinted. No way! Way off in the distance he could even see the Safari Zone even though he was on the other side. His mom never let him in the Safari Zone, she said it was way too dangerous for a young kid and that I could go when I'm older. This really annoyed Trevor because he knew from school the Safari Zone was the only place you could see some rare Pokémon that just don't live around here. Kecleon and Shroomish are cool and all, but he heard rumors that there were even Dratini hiding there, waiting to be found by a brave explorer! Maybe there are even some there right now, he needed get a better look for himself.

....

Treecko watched from just under the thicket of the canopy as the boy looked around gasping. His mom told him to never ever break through the canopy, he'd be a sitting Psyduck for all sorts of flying Pokémon. He was jealous though, he's always wanted to go up there too. 'Well, maybe if he's ok then I'd be ok too' Treecko thought as the boy started moving. He stayed crouched hidden away. His mom always said that trainers would drop everything at once to catch a Pokémon as rare as Treecko, he just didn't want to risk it. She always encouraged him that when he felt he met the right trainer who would care for him, to go with them, that he would just know when the right trainer in the right moment comes along. He always knew that one day he'd like to go explore the entire region, though becoming a Pokémon to a trainer was not the only way to do that. Besides he was too young anyway, he had to wait a few more years to be ready to leave home regardless. Treecko certainly knew that going with a trainer was an option, but he didn't like the idea of being told what to do forever. He knew he could do it on his own, although he worried about being lonely. He liked being alone, sure, but he didn't like being lonely.Treecko watched intensely as the boy reached into his bag.Thoughts swirling, 'No! Oh no! He totally saw me and he's getting the Pokéballs ready to catch me. No no no I'm not ready to go yet, n-'

Treecko paused. The boy crouched down under the canopy to get a better look in his bag. He didn't pull out Pokéballs, what was that? And as fast as the boy crouched down, he was gone with the mysterious object, back above the canopy and just out of reach.

....

'A good explorer is always prepared for anything!' Trevor chuckled to himself. He put the binoculars up to his face and looked back at the Safari Zone. Eagerly observing and skipping over the swathes of Oddish and Pikachu, he saw a Doduo.

'Woah! I've never seen a Doduo in person before, wait what is it doing?' Trevor exclaimed. He studied the Doduo and realized that both of the heads were kissing each other.

'Weird... I thought they were like the same person? Maybe they're married, though you don't get to choose that. Well either way it seems like they're happy, nobody is ever going to believe this!'

Then he heard a caw jet overhead, he looked around and a Swellow was charging right at him. He gasped and covered his face. He knew this was bad, he couldn't move in time before it came back. He covered his face with his hands and prepared himself.

....

Treecko had to see what the boy was holding. It wasn't a Pokéball, so what could it be? He stared up at the canopy, overhead, tiny beams of light penetrating the few layers between him and the top of the tree. 'I shouldn't, it's dangerous', he thought. 'Oh, but this could haunt me for the rest of my life' In a moment of triumphant bravery, Treecko burst through the leaves and looked toward where the boy was as the Swellow flew just about a foot overhead the boy.

'Oh wow, I really shouldn't have done this' thought Treecko as he started to turn away when he saw that the Swellow did not shift his focus to him, it was turning back around at the boy, going for a peck. Treecko knew that if the boy lost his grip on the tree, he would not be able to survive a fall. Before Treecko even processed what he was doing, he was sprinting along to the jungle canopy, dashing towards the boy. Treecko threw his arm up and detected the blow from Swellow.

The Swellow was shocked by this move, she hadn't noticed a Treecko here. Protecting her territory could wait, this Treecko would make a fine dinner for tonight. Treecko looked at the Swellow right in front of him and braced to be pecked directly, then he saw the boy scrambling in his bag. He took out some, ah! So he did have Pokéballs after all. Treecko was right to avoid him! Looking up at the boy, and then to the Swellow, a flat expression fell over Treecko's face as he realized he was stuck in the worst position of his life. The boy looked down at Treecko and smiled, wielding the Pokéball. Treecko closed his eyes, preparing to be caught by the trainer, his own fault for being so stupid and careless. He heard the unmistakable sound of the ball opening and closing. He didn't feel any different. Is this really what it's like? Just the same?

Treeko felt himself be grabbed, completely in the arms of the boy. He shot his eyes open and made eye contact with the boy who gestured with a finger on his mouth and a "shhh." Treecko was stunned, wondering what that could possibly mean, and why he wasn't currently trapped in a Pokéball, when he heard one open from above. The Swellow broke through the ball with a screech and started crazily flapping her wings. She looked around the canopy and couldn't find the boy or the Treecko. Resigned to the loss, she flew off in search of another unsuspecting Pokémon to pick off.

....

'Let me tell you, that was way too close! I've never had anything like that ever happen to me? Has something like that happened to you? Oh how could you tell me anyway? What was that move you did to save me? How were you so quick? I just don't -' Trevor felt Treecko's paw go up to his mouth. Treecko laughed as he just got the gesture the boy was doing earlier.

'Anway, thank you for saving me! I really donked up by letting myself be so clueless with my surroundings. Oh, what are you doing?' Trevor looked over and saw Treecko trying to get into his bag, messing around with the cords holding it together. Trevor laughed and picked the bag up and opened it for the little Pokémon. 'Is there something specific you wanted to see?'

Treecko, delighted at the open invitation to rummage, knowing now that there is no threat with the boy looking inside. There they were! The thing he was holding earlier, Treecko picked it up and looked at it inquisitively. 'Oh those are my grandpa's binoculars! You put them up to your eyes and they let you see super far away! I was just looking at the Safari Zone, oh well you would probably just call it a forest or something.' Treecko held the binoculars up to his eyes and stared at the ground. The grass jumped into his eyes, he had never seen it so up close before, not even sleeping face down. Startled, he threw them back down into the bag, and kept rummaging. Pushing past the 2 Pokéballs that were left in the bag, he found a lightly tattered folded piece of paper. The boy reached over and unfolded the paper and it opened to a large map.

'This is a Town Map. Everyone in school got them on their first day. If I'm lost, I'm just supposed to look at this and try and find my way back to a town. See this,' the boy pointed to a small red square near the bottom right corner, 'this is Fortree town, where I'm from, just over there, I'm sure you've seen it.' Treecko looked at the map. 'Really,' he thought, 'that small spot there is this entire area? This is all I've seen. I knew there was more but this much?' Treecko started to get doubtful. He worried that maybe he wouldn't be strong enough to see it on his own, it was just too big. He realized that the boy was still talking and pointing, 'and that's just the Hoenn region! There's also Unova, Kanto, Sinnoh, and umm, well a few more I'm pretty sure.' Treecko almost threw up the Oran berries he had earlier. There's no way he could go everywhere and see it all alone? Maybe he did need a trainer after all to help him?

'When I get older I'm going to see it all!I'm Trevor, the greatest explorer there is after all!' He stuck his hand out to Treecko who just looked at him. No, that's not right. He was looking past him, or through him maybe? It didn't look like he was staring in this reality. 'Um, it's a handshake, you reach out and shake it. I don't know... it's kind of just in the name.' Trevor grabbed Treecko's paw and that snapped him out of his momentary crisis.Treecko looked up at, Trevor it was, and saw an out. Trevor wants to go see it all, not constantly fight or study, or do whatever his trainers do. This is it. The moment his mom prepared him for. He felt it, Trevor was the right one. He reached back into his bag, and put the binoculars around his neck. He then grabbed the map and proudly leaped onto a rock and displayed a victorious pose. Trevor laughed and began clapping. 'Bravo! You look like a fantastic explorer too, Treecko!'

That was it, the final confirmation that Treecko needed to hear. He dashed back over to Trevor's backpack, scooped up a Pokéball, and placed it in Trevor's hand. 'Huh? What?' Trevor began asking, 'Ugh skip the sentimental crap and just cut to it already,' Treecko thought. Using his free paw he forced Trevor to press down on Pokéball and closed his eyes bracing himself. He heard the Pokéball open in that all too familiar sound, and then he felt... nothing? Well, it was warm, but dark. He felt like he could easily punch his way out of this ball, as if the walls were as frail as the town map. He could, but he didn't want to, he was going to be an explorer with Trevor and see the world. He smiled and suddenly the ball lit up, he thought about the possibilities of his journey with Trevor and imagined the plains they'd cross, mountains they'd climb, trees they'd scale. As he imagined, the landscape around him melded to his fantasies. He was amazed at this, marveling at the possibilities of his new home when suddenly there was a flash and he was outside, feeling the sunlight bright on his cheeks.

'Woah buddy! I'm not supposed to have a Pokémon yet, I'm not old enough I still have to wait two more years, oh nobody is going to believe this! And a Treecko too! They're so rare! We are going to see everything together, explorer friend, I always pictured myself with a grass type by my side.Come on I have to show everyone!' Trevor picked Treecko up, hugged him, and headed off towards Fortree town. Treecko, still wearing the binoculars smiled, he really was going to see it all with his new friend.

....

Grovyle hadn't seen fear in Trevor's face like that since right after he detected the blow from Swellow 15 years ago. This is serious. Trevor ran over and hugged him 'Come on Grovyle, we have to go, there's something in this manor and I think it's following us. Grovyle nodded, grabbed Trevor's hand and ran with him down the hallway.
