Chapter 2

"What! You mean to tell me that I'm a Magi?"

"Yes you are. I know a lot about you. For instance, I know your name is Lutira Blackrunner. I know you always travel alone, and you never go into the towns. You hunt and gather your own food so you don't have to buy anything. You have been wearing the same clothes since you left your home two months ago."

"Okay, so you know everything about me. How about I know something about you? Such as what are you? Who are you? What do you want with me?"

"Well, I suppose I owe you that much at least." He raised his paws up and lowered his hood to reveal his face.

"So you're a fox huh? I should've known." She turned toward where her clothes lay on the ground and bent to retrieve her panties. She pulled them back on, then her pants and laced them back up. She put her shirt on and turned around as she was buttoning it up and said, "well that settles what you are, now wh-!!" She stopped suddenly, for standing before her was not a fox, but a wolf. A_female_ wolf. Not only that, but it looked just like she did. "Y-you can change!!"

He laughed openly, "Ha ha, yes I can shape shift my appearance at will. Surprised you didn't I?" He laughed some more.

"But there aren't many magi that can shape shift are there? I have never even heard of one existing before now."

"My name is simply Kiran. Which means "Of the Darkness" in the old tongue. I am indeed a shifter as you said. But a very unique one in the fact that I don't have to shift my entire body to one solid form. For example." His face started to change, then his ears and muzzle, as his head shifted to that of a fox again. "See?"

"That is impressive, but quite unattractive I must say." Lutira laughed.

Kiran frowned at her. "I wish you would take this more seriously, it takes years to perfect a technique such as this. He looked around the camp site, "We need to get moving, it will be light soon and I want to be as far away from here as possible."

Lutira put her paws on her hips and took up a defiant stance, "Who said I was coming with you? I'm not going anywhere with someone who just tried to rape me."

Kiran smiled at her, "I didn't ask if you wanted to come, but if you want to live you will. There are more bandits headed this way girl, and they're after you. Also if I recall correctly, you were begging me to screw you." Kiran laughed loudly.

Lutira shot him a dirty look. "Why would the bandits be after me? How could they know where I am?"

"That I can't tell you, I'm only supposed to bring you to my master and that's all."

"So what was the sex all about then?"

"I'm considering that my payment for finding you. Plus I was just horny because you're starting to go in heat, I can smell you a mile away. And more than likely so can those bandits. That's how they're tracking you too. If they catch up to you, they're gonna do a lot worse than I ever would have."

Lutira shuffled awkwardly, "I didn't think anyone would notice that." She thought for a long moment, "Fine I'll come with you" she said it as if the decision was hers all along. "But I'm not as weak as I look, my father taught me how to fight, as I'm sure you know. So I'm not totally helpless."

Kiran just smiled. "Of course you're not." He shifted back to the form of a male fox. "Now that we have established that you're coming, can we please get moving?"

"But you still haven't answered my questions!"

"There will be time for that later girl."

"Quit calling me girl!" She paused and turned to look around, "Which way should we go anyway?"

Kiran wasn't listening however. He was casting it seemed, but Lutria didn't know what. She suddenly felt cold all over, like her body had fallen into an icy river. She couldn't move her arms or legs, "What are you doing to me!? What is this I feel?" Just as quick as it happened, however, it was over. The cold vanished, movement returned to her limbs.

"Calm down girl, I was just masking your scent so the bandits can't track us anymore. You've never experienced a spell before have you?"

"No I haven't I suppose. Is that what it always feels like, so cold? I felt as if I couldn't move any part of my body. Like I was frozen." She shivered as if she was still cold.

"Well that's because it wasn't your own magic. When someone else casts a spell on you, you will experience an effect similar to that. Your body is rejecting the magic. Only Magi have the problem. Regulars won't even know anything is happening. We should really get moving now, we have wasted enough time here already. We will be moving east, towards Durintin. We can use the movement portal there to get to my master." Kiran started to head east out of the clearing, leaving Lutira wondering what a movement portal was.

Lutira noticed him leaving and quickly caught up to him. "Hey! Don't leave me behind, I have no idea where this Durintin is. And what is a movement portal?"

"Well as the name says, it's a portal for movement across vast distances. Our destination is very far from here. It would take at least 3 months to walk there. So were cutting our journey down to at least 2 weeks by using it. I'm supposed to use that time to teach you the basics of being a magi."

"You're going to teach me how to use magic?" Lutira thought for a moment, "What if I can't?"

"Oh trust me, you can. The sex was more than just fun for me, it was a test. Magi give of a certain aura when in extreme emotional states. Such as pleasure for instance. You have a very strong and bright aura, the likes of which I have never seen. So believe me when I say you are a Magi. I wonder though.....hmmm"

Lutira gave him a puzzled look. "What are you thinking about?"

"I want you to do something for me. Hold your paw out like this." Kiran put his paw straight out in front of him, facing upwards. Lutira did the same. "Now repeat after me , Phasmatis incendia, commodo mihi vestri lux lucis. Illustro!"

Lutira did as she was told, and suddenly flames leapt from the center of her paw. She looked at them amazed, "Wh-what is this?"

"It's the most basic spell, it gives you light that will never go out. It will never burn you, but can burn anyone else that touches it. I told you I wasn't lying to you."

Lutira stared at the flames in her paw, "This is the most wonderful feeling in the world. I can feel something flowing through me, through every part of my being and soul. It feels....fierce yet happy at the same time."

"What you are feeling is the spirit of fire. Feels good doesn't it?"

"Yes, I haven't felt this good in years. Is this what you always feel?"

"Not always, some magic.....hurts the body, but you don't need to know about that yet." Also you don't need the chant for a spell every time. You can just say the trigger, Illustro", flames leapt into his paw, "and the spell will work.

She tried to do the same, "Illustro" and flames leapt into her outstretched paw. "It doesn't seem as bright now"

"It's not going to, you see, the chant is what gives the spell its power, but the trigger is what makes the spell form. You can form a spell that doesn't have power. Most advanced Magi can put power into their spells without a chant, but if they use the chant, the results are exponentially higher. The trick is finding when you need to chant, and when you don't."

Lutira was silent for a while, "Did you know my father at all?"

Kiran looked at her and noticed the tears in her eyes, "Yes I knew your father, he was a good person, and a good Magi."'

They walked along in silence for a while, until they reached a place on the side of the road that they could camp for the night. Kiran sat down by the fire ring Lutira had made with some rocks. She was about to start stacking the wood in the center when Kiran stopped her. "There are better ways to make fire, watch" He put his paws over the ring of rocks, "Umquam igneus flamma , lux lucis nox noctis , tribuo mihi vires facio incendia lux lucis. Exuro!

Fire leapt from his paws and surrounded the ring of rocks. There was nothing present for the fire to burn, but it was still bright and hot as if there for hours. Lutira stared at the flames, watching them dance and play. It was hypnotic.

"This is amazing, you sure it will never go out?"

"Not as long as I'm alive it won't. I can keep the fire going with little exertion on my part. It's very simple, I don't even need to think about it. We should get some sleep, we still have 17 miles until we get to Durintin. I plan to make that trip tomorrow."

"Sounds fine to me, but you sleep over there, I still don't trust you fully." Lutira lay down on the ground under her cloak. 'Kiran must have put up that shield again, I'm not cold at all.' She curled up and quickly went to sleep.

Kiran watched her until she fell asleep. 'I've never seen anyone as adept at magic as her. She has real potential that's for sure. I think I'll test her abilities to the fullest tomorrow' He chuckled to himself and lay down beneath his cloak as well. 'Sleep well Lutira, tomorrow is going to be very rough for you'
