Silver's Crystal cave

This is a short Horror story that I made for my English class. It originally had human characters. I made some small tweaks to it to make them foxes and fixed some small writing mistakes in the Original.

Deep beneath the lonely Arctic landscape, there lay a secluded scientific facility. The station was a labyrinth of metal corridors, filled with the hum of machinery, illuminated by harsh, sterile fluorescent lights. This facility was their world, and the researchers stationed there were its caretakers.

"Guys, you won't believe what I've found down here. It's incredible, and it's glowing. Orion, Micheal, you have to see this!" Silver's Voice crackled to life over the radio. Her voice trembling with excitement. A gloved hand picks up the radio and on Silver's side her brother's voice came clearly from the black box. "On our way! You don't have any more hints about what you found or you going to surprise us?" He asked with a chuckle. A small smile grew on silvers face as she turned to look on her discovery "Nah."

The Arctic wolf Orion and the Red fox Micheal made their way through the winding tunnels below the facility. Only a recent discovery and "one ripe for new data" according to the Micheal. The roughly formed cave was dimly lit by some old floodlights they found in storage. Orion couldn't help but admit it was eerie, but that twinge of fear was fleeting as excitement was overpowering. Not for whatever had been found, but excitement for his sister. She had always wanted to discover a new element or something, now was her chance to make the news! He imagined seeing her face in an article, Glasses shining, blue eyes twinkling. That white lab coat she always insisted on wearing all pretty and prim, matching her white fur beautifully. Shaking the hand of some big city official. He shook his head and chuckled.

They walked until they came up on a cave in. Orion's eyebrow raised as he wondered how in the world silver got past. "There" Micheal's voice echoed as he pointed to the top left side of the pile of rubble. Up there was a small gap in the pile, leaving just enough room for someone to squeeze through. "There's no w-" "Her petite form would be small enough to fit through. She is also quite flexible if I remember correctly..." Micheal interrupted. "I know. I know. C'mon" Orion replied. He climbed up to the gap and placed his paw on its roof. He gazed into the dark hole ahead of him. He doubted he could fit through... It's too tight... "Micheal your smaller. You go first" As you wish" Micheal replied. Climbing up and without hesitation pulling himself through the hole. Orion watched as he saw his friends body slowly disappear into the darkness. Only scuffling sounds echoed out from it.

The silence was deafening. Now on his own. Orion felt a tingle along his spine, as if he was being watched. He turned but saw and heard nothing besides the buzzing fluorescent lights above. He turned back to the gaping maw of a hole. Taking a deep breath, he started to crawl forward. He crawled forward, the light growing weaker and weaker as he continued forward. The walls felt like they were growing tighter the more he continued. Their cold touch bumping against his uncovered arms as he dragged himself forward. Orion's breath began to quicken. It's too small. "I'm going to get stuck" He thought to himself. His arms now rubbed off the walls with every pull. It getting harder to maneuverer with every few feet he went deeper. Orion closed his eyes tight and freezing in place. "I can't do this" He muttered. His voice trembling.

He lay there, still and silent for what felt like hours but was probably mere moments. Until he felt a hand on his wrist and his body being dragged forward. "You were right there." Micheal had pulled him through. A strange red glow on his face. As Orion's eyes adjusted to the room, he saw what was causing the glow. A large red crystal in the centre of the cavernous room they had entered. He walked down to the crystal. A strange formation was on its side. It looked almost like a fox. It had two legs, two arms and a head. He chuckeld at the thought. He caught a glimpse of something familiar on to it. He suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder, he turned and saw his sister standing there. Smiling wide at him, her white lab coat and fur was stained and dirty and her green eyes twinkled with joy. "Orion! You made it! I didn't think you would be able to get past the squeeze." "I nearly didn't" Orion replied. Scratching the back of his head, embarrassedly.

"That's fine. I'm just glad your safe and didn't freak out. You survived, my coat didn't" She chuckled and pulled him away from the crystal gently. "I'm going to see if I can make it wider with Micheal. I left some notes over there" She said as she pointed at a small clipboard, sitting on a rock "this is going to change the world. I grantee it" she said she turned towards the cave in, it looked much steeper on this side and would be much harder to get out. Orion shrugged off the slight twinge of dread that tingled up his spine. He turned back towards the formation and approached the Vulpine shaped part of it again. He plucked the item that was on its "face" and gazed on them. Confusion bubbling up inside him "Silver's... Glasses? Why isn't she wearing them?" He turned back towards her and Micheal. "Hey! Silver... I've got your glasses! I know you only wear them for show but still". She climbed back down from the pile and walked up to him. Her green eyes showing embarrassment. "Silly me. I must have dropped my show glasses" Dread bubbled up from Orion's soul. Silver didn't have show glasses, they were real... and Silvers eyes were blue.
