Ten Miles to Austin

By Archangel Vulpine

Chapter One

Vincent hadn't seen another living person in two weeks. He'd spent the better part of the day following the road, surrounded on either side by tall pine trees. As a maned wolf, walking came easily to him; he was fit and his long legs meant long strides. The only memorable part of the journey was the vehicle wreckage he'd passed. The two cars had collided some time ago and their engines were cold. There was no sign of the owners, but one of the front windscreens had been decorated with a splatter of blood. Finally, Vincent arrived at a T-junction. At the head of the junction was a petrol station, but there were no vehicles to be seen. The road leading right appeared identical to the route Vincent had followed. When he looked to the left, something caught his attention. A few metres down the road was a huge metal sign, looking as if it would be more at home on a motorway. Studying the sign, Vincent found its directions made even less sense. The road which stretched before him was labelled "Austin 10 miles". A drop of rain landed on Vincent's nose. Turning from the sign, he headed for the dim petrol station and came under its high, square canopy in time for more taps of rain to sound against the metal cover. The shop of the petrol station was intact, all of its windows in one piece and the doors closed. Trying the latter, Vincent found it was unlocked. A bell above the door sounded as he pushed it open. Some of the shelves held items of no value, such as magazines and newspapers, but others held food and drink. The barrel of a shotgun came out of the shadows, pointed at Vincent. From a shadowy corner came the barrel of a shotgun, pointed at vincent.
