Ghosting Through Life - Chapter 5

-> Ghosting Pains

by Zmeydros

My hip, shoulder, and head, smacked into the alfalfa-covered ground. I was alive, Clarissa was alive, but I wished I'd gotten knocked unconscious as the searing agony throughout my body overwhelmed every other sense. It hurt to stay lying on my side, but I didn't dare move, or even try to look around, as I heard Clarissa's hoofsteps approach with my long fox ears.

When she got onto her knees next to me, she was panting. "Are you okay?"

"No, I feel like my body's full of broken glass and it cuts me deeper every time I move. Even breathing hurts." I winced as I thought about what that could mean.

"Can you move?"

I moved my right arm to grab Clarissa's hand and whimpered. Even my bones hurt.

She took my hand. "That bad, huh? I know it's going to hurt, but I need to know if both your arms and both your legs can move."

Moving my legs and my left arm, I had trouble keeping my breathing steady.

"The fastest way to get you better is to get you to the farm. So I'm gonna carry you to the car and then drive you the rest of the way. Okay?"

"It still works?

"Yeah, I think so."

"Are you sure you should move me? If I hurt my spine, it's better to leave me here." I turned my head just enough to look at her.

"Everything hurts, but you can move everything, right? Just tell me if you feel numbness or anything else as I pick you up." She got behind me, putting her hands under my right thigh and my ribs. "Roll backwards."

I rolled backwards and she lifted me off the ground like I was her bride and it was our wedding day. Disrupting that wonderful thought was me going, "Ow. Ouch. Ow. Ow. Ouch. Ow. Owie," each time she took a step.

"Cut that out. I'm doing my best."

"I know, I'm just trying to distract myself." I loved how strong she was. Her limp from her car's collision with the bushes wasn't slowing her down much.

"Okay, maybe try saying something else so I don't feel guilty the whole way back to the car."

"How. Houch. How. How. Howie."

She made a "tee-hee" sound as she tried not to laugh. "You're lucky we're almost at the car."

"Good. No offense, but being carried is making everything worse."

"None taken."

I kept complaining for another couple minutes while she tried not to laugh. Entertaining myself almost made me forget about the pain.

She set me down on the hood. "Stay."

I giggled only to gasp in pain.

She opened up the car and then laid me across the back seat before starting it on the second try and driving slowly down the gravel road. She called Maria and told her what the situation was. Not long after that, we drove into a big red barn with a dark blue silo next to it.

Inside the barn were a lot of bright LED lights and stainless steel cabinets. When the car door opened at my feet, Maria was there with a gurney, towering over everyone else as her dark blue dragon scales and cyan unicorn horn glimmered in the light being cast by medical lamps.

She and Clarissa talked to each other while they pulled me out of the car and put me onto the gurney, but I missed most of what they were saying. It was kinda hard to focus on stuff.

As I was being pushed up a slight incline, Maria lightly touched my cheek. "Hey, stay with us."

I hadn't realized it, but I'd been about to drift off to sleep.

Just past Maria, in the corner of the room on a stool, was an orange tabby cat hybrid with curly hair who looked like a stereotypical witch. In addition to her very dark purple pointy hat, she was in a matching dark purple dress that looked a bit like a robe with frilly sleeves and crescent moons and stars in the lace near the bottom. The deep V-shaped cleavage window on her dress left little to the imagination. She had a crystal ball in her hand with something moving inside it.

Catching me staring, she got up as Maria moved me to the center of the room and set the brake on the gurney. In her crystal ball, I saw myself reappearing and getting launched out of the ground in extreme slow motion.

Her ears and gaze moved toward the door as footsteps echoed throughout the barn. "Get over here and give her the whole bottle."

"Shouldn't we wait for the doctor before we do anything?" Clarissa asked.

"He's in town and won't be back for another half hour, at least. She's got swelling..." The cat used her crystal ball and I saw blood seeping out of tons of tiny slices and internal bruises to my flesh. It was a complete mess inside me. "Lots of bleeding. Every time she had to partially materialize to avoid falling into the ground, she got road rash throughout her tissue."

"That's exactly what it feels like." I felt a wave of nausea as I realized what that meant.

"H-how did you know?" Clarissa got closer and looked into the crystal ball.

"Last person who got a phasing power from the lantern died due to internal injuries. She was too far gone for Dr. Kozina to save her, even with Milena's milk on hand." She reached toward an outstretched magenta-scaled hand with cyan claws holding a glass bottle of milk. "Sit her up."

Maria and Clarissa grabbed me and sat me up. I gasped in pain. As I was handed the milk, I glanced at the owner of that cyan-clawed hand, Berry. She was as petite and meek as ever, her magenta cheeks blushing from just the slightest bit of attention.

My own cheeks blushed in embarrassment as I drank the milk because everyone was watching me so intently.

It was quite creamy, more so than normal whole milk, and had a hint of honey and sweet grass. After I'd had half the milk, this wave of warmth radiated out from my belly, chasing away pain in a similar way to massaging a muscle. The tension throughout my body eased enough that I started breathing deeper. Before I'd felt tired due to feeling ill, but now I was feeling tired due to being relaxed. Though, there was this odd twitching throughout my body, like someone poking my insides randomly with a Q-tip.

The tabby cat looked in her crystal ball and sighed in relief. "Looks like she'll live." She looked at Clarissa. "What were you thinking having her drive?"

"I'm wondering that too." Maria's imposing eight feet of height made her narrowed eyes a lot more threatening than they'd be otherwise.

"I had a splitting headache and it didn't even register as a risk."

"If she'd been going sixty, we'd be attending her funeral right now." Maria shook her head.

Clarissa grimaced, her eyes looking a bit wet.

"When it comes to untrained powers, I need you to be more careful in the future. If taking longer on your trip forces you to stay in a hotel or otherwise adds to your costs, I will gladly pay for it." As she spoke, Maria gently helped me lay on my back.

"Okay, will do." Clarissa looked at me. "How are you doing?"

"A lot better. The pain is uncomfortable, but manageable." I moved my hands to my belly because they had been hanging awkwardly off the sides of the gurney.

"Good." She stroked my cheek with a finger.

"So, do you have like any control of your power?" The tabby cat asked. "My name's Rinny, by the way."

"Maybe a tiny bit? I haven't sunken to the core of the planet yet." I shrugged.

"Oof, we have a long week ahead of us." Rinny got this small smile. "But as long as you don't get behind the wheel of any more vehicles, you'll probably live through your training."

"I don't know if I ever want to drive again, or ride a bike, or rollerblade. That was even worse than what happened at the nightclub."

Rinny nodded. "You might think that fear you have is going to keep you safe, but I bet you're panicking when your power kicks in, aren't you?"

"Yeah." My long pointy ears drooped as my tail curled between my legs.

"Oh, stop with the self pity. I'd panic. Heck, anyone would panic if they had your power. In fact, that's how the last person who had a phasing ability died." Rinny grabbed Clarissa's hand. "You don't get to beat yourself up either. Learning the hard way is the only way a lot of the time."

"Okay." Clarissa sniffled.

Seeing always-confident Clarissa cry, I felt like I needed to cry and my eyes started to get wet. I had this icky feeling, like watching a horror film and identifying a bit too much with one of the characters.

"Hey, you'll be feeling a lot better within the next thirty-six hours while Melina's milk works its magic." Maria ran her fingers through my hair.

"So, I won't have lasting damage?" I tried to hold it together. Everyone was watching me and I didn't want to just start crying in front of all of them.

"No, you should heal fully." Maria patted my hand reassuringly. "Everyone here is going to make sure you survive your power. And if it's just too dangerous, we can give it back to the lantern."

My eyes were getting wetter as that icky feeling got worse. "Survive my power?"

"Oh shit, that's hitting you too, huh?" Clarissa hugged me, her tears falling more freely.

I hugged her back as I started bawling. "I almost died."

Clarissa petted my side soothingly.

"Glad you're still with us." Rinny put a paw-padded hand on my shoulder.

"Me too." Maria put a huge scaly hand on my other shoulder while I continued crying.

Waking up in the same room Berry and I had fucked in, I blinked in the darkness. The light-blocking curtains were only letting the faintest hint of the moonlight through at the very edges. When I picked up my phone, I realized it was eleven hours since I'd gone to bed. Slowly getting to my feet, I winced. The broken glass sensation was a lot duller, but it was still excruciating.

Gasping in pain with every single step, I made my way out of my room and into the hallway. The softly-flickering orange nightlight near the bathroom cast my shadow on the wall. Two other bedroom doors shared that wall and after a hallway intersection, there was another grouping of three bedrooms and a bathroom. As I entered my shared bathroom and shut the door, I caught the faint hint of cinnamon from a sensitive-nose-friendly air freshener plugged into the wall just above the hand towel. After I fought my discomfort and managed to empty my bladder, I washed my hands and stepped back out into the hallway.

The door right next to mine opened and Clarissa stepped out. "Oh dear," she said in a hushed voice as she grabbed one of my arms and put her shoulder under mine.

I whimpered softly in pain from being moved, but leaning heavily on her got me back to my room a lot quicker than I would have done on my own.

She guided me to lay down and then got under my covers with me, spooning me from behind. "Is this okay, or does it hurt too much?"

"It's more than okay. I think it'll be easier to fall asleep." I grabbed her right hand and gave it a squeeze as I pressed myself against her breasts, udder, and bulge, enjoying her softness combined with the amazing cuddliness of our fleece PJs. "Thank you."

She squeezed back. "You're welcome."

As I was trying to drift off to sleep, an awful thought popped into my head. "Clarissa?"

"Yes?"

"I need you to be honest with me. Is Maria and everyone just trying to comfort me and telling me I'll get fully better even though they're not sure?"

"No, no, no." She hugged me a bit tighter, but carefully. "Milena's milk has saved people worse off than you many times. There's limits, but you're not past them."

I let out a breath I didn't know I'd been holding. "Oh, thank goodness. I don't think I could deal with this level of pain for months on end."

"Don't worry, you'll get better." She kissed the top of my head. In her arms, I found it easy to relax and drift off to sleep.
