#1 of That\'s Life

_Alrighty! I've gotten my second story done. Don't worry about the lack of yiffiness. But it will come. This shall be a story series and I'll likely work on the next installment for it right away. ^^ If not now, then perhaps a little later on over the weekend. I've got plenty of time.

Don't forget to vote and comment! It might give me some more ideas for the next part._

A fair size city is where my story takes place. What's the name of this city? Miami. A beautiful place in Florida. That's the human name for it. That don't mean that us animals don't know the name. We hear it constantly. Our fur bristles at the sound of cars and human voices. Why? Because... there our enemy. They bring us pain, confusion, and death. They bring us slavery. The very beings that had once chosen to ban slavery, keep house pets all the time. Dogs and cats, birds and fish, anything they want to make their life a little more interesting. Well, I certainly don't see where they get away with it. My life is mine. My freedom is mine. And the humans can stay away from me. Dogs are all I need. Wilderness. Dumpsters. The beach. A life where you never know what's around the corner, where you have to dodge the humans and their pounds. Where jail means that you become a slave... or lose your life. Well, welcome to Miami... from a dog's point of view.

Who am I, one might ask. Well, let me tell you a bit about myself. First off, I'm a breed of dog known as a mutt. I have everything in me from rottie to border collie. Husky to great dane. I have thick fur that is mostly black except for a bit of white along my muzzle and my stomach. My tail is rather skinny, but furry. It hangs limp most of the time, but I can curl it up over my back. I'm also a fair size dog, qualifying to be about 28 inches at the shoulders. A good size for a dog. I'm built too, to make it all the better. The strength of a rottie combined with the cunning of a boarder collie. I'm the perfect street dog. I know where the best places are... and what's best, I know where all the packs are with the ladies. See, unlike most cities. Miami has a few packs for their mutts. And each pack has a wide variety of breeds. I even know a little Chihuahua. Those little guys can actually hold their own. It's quite amazing to see one in action. Cause, we do have fights. We do have romance. Violence, rape, love, friendship, and loyalty. A wide variety of things go on in my world. I wonder, are the humans willing to learn a little about it?

This particular day, was a rather nice and sunny one. I'd spent the majority of the day wandering around the city, talking to a few of the pack alphas that I knew. Despite the pack rivalries, I had no issues with either of the main packs.

Wait, I guess I should pause and explain the packs. The first one rules the north east side of the city. Every inch of it. It's led by a Doberman named Rex. He's a good guy, and keeps his pack in line. There are roughly 10 females in his pack, 8 males, and 16 puppies. The pups are, of course, mostly sired by Rex. He doesn't let the males get laid unless they okay the female with him. I, however, have a deal with him. I can mate with one female in his pack. All I have to do is make sure I tell him the one I picked and he'll let me have her for a week. After that, she returns to his pack and the pups are raised with the utmost care. I've thought once or twice about taking one of my young under my wing. But that's somewhat difficult.

The other main pack rules the north west side of the city. They are led by another Doberman named Drake. The two leaders are brothers. Though, I'm friends with both of them. Like Rex, Drake lets me have one female from his pack for a week. So I've a few pups in his pack. This pack is roughly the same size as Rex's. The only difference is that there are roughly 12 females, 4 males, and 18 pups. The two packs are constantly arguing with each other, though I've shown up and broke each fight up. All I do is remind them that I know where their parents are. See, unlike the two pup leaders, I have kept in contact with their parents. We grew up together. After all, one has to have a start somewhere. Mine just happened to be their father's pack, but I'm not their brother. I'm just their best friend and they know that I won't choose a side.

At any rate, I was on my way to meet with Rex and Drake. The two of them were leaving their mate and the betas in charge of their pack while they were gone. After all, it was their mother's birthday, and it was about time they went to visit. Regretfully, I was the only one among the three of us that knew the location of their parents. My pads touched the ground with ease as I appeared around the corner and entered the park where I'd told them to meet up. My ears having already picked up the sound of bickering between the two brothers.

"Enough you two. I didn't tell you guys to meet me here so I could break up a fight. It's your dams birthday, give her a break for once," I stated firmly to both of the black and tan males. Their gazes shifted from each other to me before they both gave a smirk of sorts.

"Demon. It's good to see you," Rex greeted as he stepped forth from his brother. Drake lowered his head in agreement with his brother. They really did think a lot a like, despite their constant arguing amongst each other. "Where are our parents anyways?" the alpha spoke.

"I told you. You'll see when we arrive. Now lets get going before Jet and Shani get upset with me. I was supposed to have you two there by now," I shook my maw before turning my tail around and heading off in a new direction. South. Towards the center of Miami. The underground pack awaited there. See, despite all the packs above ground. The rivalries and the turmoil. Jet and Shani's pack was by far the strongest. They had a pack size of 40 members easy. Though the alphas had not bred themselves in the longest time, they were the most liked pack in the city. Dogs came from everywhere to join them... but only certain ones could get in. Jet had a habit of being picky about the type of dog he let into his pack. He'd always told his sons to be the same way, but they didn't have near the applicants for theirs. So they took who they could get.

"Man, you have to tell us where the underground is. We haven't seen ma and pa's new place!" Drake protested as he followed me. His brother walking along side him. I'd told them to do that, and they had to keep their paws to themselves. I wasn't there to play baby sitter, nor was I there to break up a dog fight between the two strongest alphas in Miami.

"I'm showing you where it is, Drake. That's good enough for now. You know speaking the location of the underground is something I never do. It causes more hassle for your father when more know where his pack is. Now stop telling me to tell you where it is. We'll be there soon enough. You forget, I spend my days wandering these streets, I know every way of accessing the underground." I made sure to inform him of that as I slipped silently through the alleyways. Suddenly, the sound of humans caught my attention and I stopped, halting both of the Dobermans. "Humans..." I whispered harshly to them over my shoulder before we all crouched down. We knew humans could be bad news for us.

Slowly I crept forward and peeked around the corner. My tail coiling up over my back before I spotted them. A group of younger humans. They might be trouble, but they smelled of some substance that I knew made them a little slower. "What do you think, Demon, can we make it past them?" Rex asked, his ears perked forth and waiting for my response. The boys I knew would be impatient to reach their family, and I was impatient to reach the underground myself. I often slept with that pack, since I had been born a member there. But I had a deal. I would not join any pack. I would be friends with all the alphas and be a sort of... police. I kept things running smoothly. That was my duty, and in turn. I had the friendship, loyalty and respect of each pack leader.

"I think so. They'll be slower. But we have to move quickly," I responded seconds before I darted from my hiding spot and across the street. No cars would be coming at this time. Too many humans had better things to do, and they often used the more main roads, leaving us the others as a way of safe passage. My paws drove me forth swiftly until I finally reached where I was looking for. The alleyway across from the one I'd left. About midway through I paused and looked back to see that the other two had followed and made it across.

"We're here. In one piece. Though I think one of them spotted Drake," Rex stated calmly to me, his sides heaving a bit at the sudden run that we had to do. I nodded and turned to continue on my way. We could be seen... so long as they didn't follow. We would have to be more careful the rest of the trip and hope we arrived safely. Otherwise it'd be my head. And I knew it.

The rest of the trip seemed to move with relative ease before we reached a tunnel. Normally trains would be going through there, but this particular tunnel was rarely ever used. The street dogs that lived within there made sure of it. My paws padded my way down the tunnel. The boys knew about this entrance to the underground, but they didn't know about the secret one that led to their parent's private den. A place where the couple went to be on their own and they always vanished there on special occasions. Arriving at a point that was roughly a mile and a half into the tunnel, I stopped. My gaze turned to the two Dobermans before I looked forth once more and nudged a human placed garbage can out of the way. The two boys crawled through the hole first before I backed in, grabbing a chain that secured the object and pulled it back into place. The rest of the way I squirmed backwards until I finally reached an opening that allowed me to turn around and see the group of Dobermans that waited for me.

"Demon, I must say, you've made us happy by bringing these two back home for the night," Jet stated to me, nudging me with a fatherly affection. I nodded to him before looking to his mate and lowering my maw to her as well.

"Happy birthday, Shani. I trust you've had a good birthday so far," I greeted the bitch before turning my attention to Jet. "And good evening, Jet. It was the least I could do. No need to thank me," I returned his nudge before moving to Shani and licking the side of her muzzle.

"Thank you, Demon. I have had a nice one. Did you have any trouble getting the boys here?" the alpha female questioned me as she settled herself into a better position. Her eyes watching me with their dark brown hue.

"We ran into some humans. Though Rex claims they may have seen Drake, we weren't followed. We'll just have to take a different route to get them back home," I gave her a wolfish grin before I settled down myself and watched the group of Dobermans.

They ended up talking amongst themselves about their pack stats and who was pregnant, who had puppies, who was injured. Everything that Jet wanted to know about his son's packs. "Have there been any disputes up top today?" Jet suddenly asked me as he turned his attention from his sons. Every holiday seemed to be more about business than anything else. But fun usually followed, but by that time I returned to the rest of the underground pack to greet some of the dogs there. The boys would be returning on their own... unless they offered up a place for me to stay or something in compensation.

"There were. Sadistic and Satin were fighting. But it was all settled before either lost their life," I reported.

"Are they not of the same pack?" Jet cocked his head to the side in surprise when he'd heard my report. There weren't any real pack fights today. There rarely were.

"They are. It seemed that Sadistic couldn't keep that young pup from trying to exert his dominance. I stepped in and told Satin that he wasn't going to win the fight. Sadistic's putt too much into that pack to lose it just yet," I responded respectfully before rising from my spot. My job of reporting the incidents was done. "I think I'll retire to the rest of the pack now. I heard that Sanny is going into heat," I grinned at the group of Dobermans before I received a nuzzle from Shani.

"Have a good night, Demon. Tell Obsidian that I want him to keep the pack in line tonight and for him to pick someone to escort the boys back to their respective packs. I believe you've earned a night to do as you like," Jet spoke up before I nodded and turned to climb back out of the hiding spot for the pack leaders. The family had gone back to discussing and enjoying their time together as I nudged the door back closed.

It didn't take me long before I'd arrived to my destination. I'd paused long enough to speak with the beta and tell him the message that Jet had requested I pass on before heading off to find myself that fae that would be my company for the night. Actually, it was likely she would be my company for the next week. Soon enough, I found her.

A 24 inch high female with short, slick smoky grey fur that seemed to have a bluish at times. Her eyes turned to regard me with those lovely husky eyes. "Demon. I thought I might see you tonight. You've come to visit me at least once each day for the past week," the female greeted me in her friendly manner before I licked her maw.

"Of course I did, dear Sanika. You know I wouldn't dream of leaving a female alone for very long. Specially not one that's about to go into heat," I grinned wolfishly at her before licking her ear and nuzzling her neck. The females usually knew when I would show up, though I had my favorites among them. Sanika, or Sanny as I often called her, was one of my favorites. She always had been.

"Oh, so this has nothing to do with who I am?" she teased me. She knew full well that I showed up each time she was in heat, and only once was I not the one to breed her. But that time Jet had requested I let another do so unless I intended to claim her as a mate. Something I wasn't sure about doing. I didn't want to claim a mate just yet. I wasn't ready to settle down and choose a pack. Nor was I ready to start my own. Too many politics involved there.

I chuckled at her words before nipping ever so lightly at her ear. "You know that's not the case, m'dear. Now follow me, you owe me some alone time," I whispered to her as she flicked her tail and sent that intoxicating scent into the air. Some of the newer males looked up when the scent alone, but the moment the other males snarled at them they ignored us. The males in the pack knew that I got the females I wanted. The pack alpha liked me.

She giggled at me and led me off to a private area of the pack terra. The abandoned station was never visited by humans since dogs overran it, and the pound just didn't have the ability to catch us all without getting attacked. Besides, for the most part the large pack of dogs was constantly out of he way. So we were at peace and we loved to enjoy company and our mates. Or, a random female that we took interest in.

I could feel my sheath beginning to bulge as I followed the bitch and watched that swaying tail constantly reveal what my instincts told me I wanted. I licked my chops as I disappeared from the view of the pack members and into the area where we would be spending our night. She was laying on her side, and she'd done this to me on purpose. How rude. "Come here, big boy," she purred to me in a seductive tone as I lowered my head and padded closer to the female...
