#1 of Balto Mercer's Diary

A book sat in the corner of the room. The first boy walked up to it. "Hey look!" The others turned to him, and stepped up. The female was the first to speak. "That book looks so old; it might date back to the UFC Wars!" A furry male came out. "Wow. I wonder if it has anything to with my species." The other furry individual snorted. "Yeah right, sentient rabbits didn't expose themselves, until many years later." The first one rolled his eyes. "Know it all." She stuck her tongue out at him. "Shut up, Chris. I was just proving something to Harry."

The other female smacked Chris out of the way. "Well, why don't we set all of our suspicions at rest, by opening it?" They all grumbled in agreement. Harry nodded. "Alright, Kandace, open it, before my wolfy friend here, Sierra, decides Chris looks like an annoying snack." Sierra growled playfully, and Chris squeaked in fear. Kandace sighed, and opened the book. Dust came off in huge rolling clouds. They all reared back, coughing, except Kandace, who was busy reading the title inside. "The Diary of Balto Mercer; hero of the OSB War, father of six, husband to one, and slave to the devil." They all stared at each other in awe.

"There's been no recorded history at all, of the Other Sentient Being War, other than one other diary, that only mentioned it, as it being the war that proved to humans that there were other sentient beings besides themselves." Harry applauded Sierra, who merely blushed. "Well, history lesson aside, who's going to read it?" Chris looked around. Harry sighed, and went up to the book. "I guess I will, considering I was always the one to read in school, something about me being a very interesting speaker." He picked up the book, and sat down.

"With love, to my family, my wife, and Nero." Everybody stared at Harry with wide eyes. "Nice voice. You sounded exactly as if he was talking." Harry's cheeks turned a bright pink, even through his dark colored fur, and the darkness around them. He coughed, clearing something from his throat, and began again. "Part One: The Other Sentient Being War, and the Second Death."

Monday 11, 2007

My name is Balto Mercer. I am fifteen currently, and live underground. I know what you're thinking, and no, I'm not a rabbit. I'm a wolf. Well, part wolf, other part dog. I have lived with my sister and uncle, for years, ever since my parents died. I was part of a huge clan, who was all wiped out, by a group of tyrant cannibals, and among the dead, were my mom, my dad, and my siblings, except for Krystal. She's my annoying, selfish, and freakishly seductive sister, not to mention she's a shark with a sniper.

Anyway, my uncle's name is Krazier. He's an assassin for hire, who has sent us money every now and then, to help us along, but, the main source of money is my weekly Overworld run. It's when I go to ground level, and get supplies. They chose me, because I'm the fastest, I'm the strongest, even though one of my arms is in a cast, and I can get the supplies for cheap and legal ways.

Oh yeah, me and my sister live in an underground city, named Nome. Yes, after Nome, Alaska, the town that was destroyed by the tyrant, Ventus. It's a slapped together town, made of scrap metal, and whatever else we could find. The only real building down here is the court building. Well, maybe I should start talking about today, the day my entire life changed forever.

I was on the Overworld run. It was like every Monday. I went across the frozen wastes, down a mountain, and through a forest, without breaking a sweat. That might be incredible for some people, but for us, it was normal. I was making my way down the street.

"Hey, kid!" I turned, and saw a man in a long coat come up to me. "You want to save the world?" I rolled my eyes sighing. "Listen, just because I'm some stranger in a hoodie, walking down the road, doesn't mean I'll buy into your saving the world crap, so get the hell out of my face." He smiled. "Hey Balto, it's nice to see ya."

Krazier smiled, as he took off the mask. I sighed, and my shoulders slouched. "Is that all? I'm on the O run." He nodded. "Alright, I can see you can't spend a few seconds with me, so I'll go ahead and give this to ya." He handed me an envelope. "Thanks for the cash, see ya." I waved to my uncle, as I walked down the road.

After another thirty minutes of tireless trekking, I made it to the store. Yeah, I know, I like big words. I'm actually having my sister help me beef up my vocabulary. Anyway, I walked in, and pulled off my hood. The clerk waved to me. "Hi Balto, are you here for the usual?" I laughed and nodded. This was the one store that knew what I was, and what all the people in my town were.

"Actually, I'm gonna get something extra, as well." She nodded, and started going around the store. I walked to the alcohol section, and grabbed two cases of whiskey. Whiskey is my favorite. If you hear anybody tell you different, correct them immediately. I also grabbed some necessities, that I wasn't going to let be mixed in with the town's crap.

I walked to the front, already popping off the top of a whiskey, and downing it in a gulp. "Let's see, that's about ten metric tons of assorted food, fifty cases of alcohol, diapers, clothes, and cosmetics?" "All the same and here are my things." He handed it over. "That'll be 50,000 dollars." I handed over the cash, and she handed over my things. "There ya go. I'll be back in a week!" She nodded. "Take care, Balto!"

I came out of the store. Yes, the town of Nome trusted me with $50,000, mainly, because we secretly stole one of the U.S. Mint's machines, so we had an infinite flow of cash. I got in the loading truck, and headed off. As I rolled down the road, I noticed something. There was a gathering of people, all holding weapons.

I slowly drove off of the road, and set the truck into a hiding spot of mine. I snuck out, and made my way towards them. I shifted into a human, and absorbed myself into a crowd that was forming. This was more than some party. Something, off, was going on. I made my way towards the front, and the people stopped close to a stage.

A human walked out, in a ridiculous get-up, complete with medals, a rifle, and an army cap. I hid my laughter, considering humans felt it comforting, for a human to be like this. "People of the United States, we have been invaded! Not by Europeans, or Asians, or Africans, or Aliens. But, by Animals! They are sentient life forms, but have been secretly hiding it from us, for millennia, after millennia!"

Whispers coursed through them, and I tightened my gaze. The only way they could have done this, was with a witness. "I bring you, a sentient being!" An otter was brought out, and he stood before the crowd, and gulped. He had his mouth purposefully shut, but the General pressed a button on a pad, and the Otter was shocked. "Help me! They've had me imprisoned! I'm just like you! But with fur!" He began to cry, without warning.

Whispers grew to yells, and protests. "Let him go!" "If he is sentient, he should be one of us!" "One of us!" "One of us!" The chant seemed to grow, and ripple through the crowd. The General was unprepared for this. Balto smiled, and slipped out of his veil.

Some of the people around him gasped, but some cried cheers. He stepped onto the stage. "Hello United States of America!" The crowd erupted into cheers. "I am a sentient wolf. And, there are many other species just like my friend here, which are also sentient beings. We have hidden, because so far, whenever we have been found out, it has gone to war, terrible, close to Holocaust, war." The crowd went into gasps. "In fact, we tried two years ago. We failed in China, Spain, and Madagascar. I hope it won't come to war again. Are you with me, my fellow Americans?!" The answer was wild, and agreeing.

The General didn't take to kindly to this. He barked orders, for me to be taken away. As the guards came forward, I smiled. I smacked one aside, and jumped on top of the other. I grinned, balancing on his head, before slamming on a pressure point, making him drop to the ground.

The General pulled out a pistol, aimed at me. I held up my arm, which was in a cast, to block the shot. The bullet hit my arm, and it exploded. My arm remained, which glowed its strange red aura. I moved it back and forth. "Do not be alarmed. I've just had bad luck."

The General stared at my arm. "Like it? I got it from the devil. I died once, but I made a deal. I've paid it off." I ran forward, and picked the General up. I tossed him up and down for a few seconds, before throwing him past the crowd, into the snowy banks.

"America, we have a major problem." I picked up the otter. "You okay?" "Better, now that you saved me." "It's gonna get even better." I sighed, and walked up to the front of the stage. "The Sentient Being population is scattered, and scared. They need to know, that it is okay, for them to be out in public, without the prejudice! Just like it was for blacks long ago, we need to put aside our differences, for the benefit of all, for the land of the free!"

The entire crowd erupted, totally going crazy. I saw camera trucks in the back, video taping the entire event. I grinned, and waved at people. Several other species seemed to melt from the crowd, and stand next to me and the otter. "Let America know, we are the land of the free, and we, are the same as all of you. We want to make a living, we want families, we want to be safe, and we want liberty. Let liberty ring!"

Harry blinked, and looked around. "Wow." Everybody stared at each other. Kandace looked at her watch. "Oh my god! 11:30! My parents are gonna kill me!" They all nodded, and got up.

Chris thought for a second. "I guess I'll see you all tomorrow?" They all scratched the back of their heads. Harry smiled. "I got an idea. How about we meet on Mondays? Just like Balto getting the supplies." They all nodded in agreement.

"Monday it is." Everybody scattered. "Harry, you are closer to the secret of my Diary. Keep everyone together, and make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. You'll understand after a while." Harry looked around. "Uh, okay, goodbye, uh, Balto."

"See you Monday."
