Chapter 5

"The Mountain"

Quick side note: My chapters shall be getting longer and more detailed, but will be posted less often. The ones I'm posting now were written about a year ago, which is why they're terrible. I've recently gotten back into writing and I decided to finish this series. After about chapter 6 they should get quite a bit better. Thanks to everyone who's been reading this so far :)

The next morning Kayli woke up to a loud metallic click. She looked down over the edge of the top bunk, and saw Blade sitting and working on another weapon. "Remind me never to get on your bad said" Kayli said, still sleepy. Blade smiled and looked up at her. "Good morning to you too" he said. "I take it you aren't much of a morning person?" "Not when people are noisy and wake me up" she said, sticking her tongue out at him. "Sorry about that" he said. Kayli shrugged. "What's the plan for today?" she asked. "Well, you still gotta meet one more person, and then we need to find you a weapon." he said, putting the gun he was holding back on the desk. "Its not like I could do anything with one anyway, I've never used one" she said. Blade looked up at her in disbelief. "Over a year of this happening and you've never used a gun?" he asked her. "Nope. In my group we all had jobs. I spent most of my time tending to the younger kids." she said. "Well then I guess you'll have to learn. Come on sleepy, lets go find you some gear." he said, getting up and leaving the hut. Reluctantly she got out of bed and followed him.

A few hours later, Blade had found Kayli full combat gear and weapons, and they were driving farther north in the black hummer that Josh was working on the day before. "So...where are we going?" Kayli asked. "Up to Moon Lake. Its pretty quiet, so we shouldn't have too much trouble."he said. "OK, good. Just don't expect me to be a sharpshooter or anything." she said. "By the time we finish, you should be shooting just fine" Blade said, sounding very sure of himself. "I don't really believe that, but whatever" Kayli said. They sat in silence for the last 20 minutes of the trip.

When they got to Moon Lake, blade stopped the hummer and stepped out, taking a deep breath of the cold, fresh mountain air. Kayli stepped out and shivered. 'This is cold even for me with my thick fur. Must really suck for Blade' she thought. She looked over at blade. He was sitting on the shore of the lake, seemingly hypnotized by the crystal clear blue water of the lake. 'Wow, this place is incredible...' Kayli thought. She went down and sat next to him. For some reason, she couldn't think of a better place to be right now: in the middle of a forest at the banks of a beautiful lake, sitting with the boy who saved her life and gave her a home after everything was taken from her. She wondered why she couldn't stop thinking about him, but decided not to worry about it. Blade sighed and came out of his trance. "We should probably get started" he said, walking back to the hummer and getting some gear.

Blade spent most of the day teaching Kayli how to use weapons, how to tell if there is infected nearby, and some basic first aid. They were doing some target practice when it happened. Kayli levelled the barrel of her rifle at one of the tin cans Blade had set up on top of a rock. She took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger when she exhaled. An instant later, blade staggered backwards holding his left thigh. "ARGH!" he cried out in pain, falling to the ground. "Are you OK?" Kayli asked, not sure what had just happened. "Yeah" he replied through clenched teeth."What happened?"she asked. "Ricochet" he grunted. "Help me get to the truck" "OK"She said, helping him up. He put an arm around her shoulders, and she helped him limp back to the hummer. "Thanks" he said, sitting down and pulling a first aid kit from under the driver seat. He did his best to wrap up the bleeding hole in his leg. He started the truck and closed his door, while Kayli went around and got in the passenger seat. They drove as fast as possible back to the camp.

10 minutes later, they came in the front gate, screeching to a halt outside of a white hut with a red + on it. They got out and Kayli helped Blade into the hut. Inside there was 2 beds, a bunch of cupboards, and a young red fox. "Hey blade, who-oh god, what happened?" "Ricochet" blade grunted, now starting to get pale. "Come over here" the fox said, leading him over to one of the beds and putting him in it. She turned and got some bandages. Kayli was left standing by the door, not sure what to do. "Hey, I need your help" the fox said to Kayli, motioning her over. "Hold this rag against the wound." she said. Kayli pressed the white rag against blades bleeding wound. It quickly turned crimson red. Blade was loosing a lot of blood. He was flickering in and out of consciousness now. Kayli looked up just in time to see the fox jab a massive syringe into blades leg. She took two steps backwards, and fainted.

When she woke up, Blade was sitting next to her bed in a chair looking quite distraught. "You had us worried for a bit." He said, sounding relieved. "W-what happened?" Kayli asked, feeling extremely dizzy. "You fainted and hit your head pretty hard" he said. "Fainted?" Kayli asked, very confused. "Apparently you fainted after Miranda gave me an injection of adrenaline" he said. "W-who's Miranda? She asked. "She is" blade said, pointing towards a young red fox standing in the corner shyly. "Hello. I'm Miranda. I'm kind of the medic here" she said, seeming very nervous. "Oh...hello" Kayli said, still very dizzy from hitting her head. "You've got a somewhat severe concussion. All I can do to help though is give you something for headaches. Other than that, you just need to rest a lot" Miranda said, fidgeting a bit. If Kayli was in a normal state of mind, she would've noticed this and been curious as to why, but since she wasn't, she didn't even notice. "Rest sounds nice..." Kayli said, trailing off. "Come on, lets get you back to your bunk" Blade said, somehow standing on his own."OK" Kayli said, getting out of bed and trying to stand. As soon as she stood up, stumbled, and fell. But before she could hit the ground, she was caught by Blade. "Thank you" she said. Blade smiled and set her back on the bed. "I don't think I can walk. How are we supposed to get to our bunk?" Kayli asked. "Like this" blade said, picking up Kayli bridal style. Kayli put her arms around his neck to keep steady and blushed heavily under her fur, too embarrassed to say anything. 'Why do I feel like this around him?' she wondered with the little amount of rational thought she had. Because the rational thought she had was being used up, she didn't realise that Blade was walking across the camp with a bullet hole in his leg, and didn't even seem to be in any pain at all.

When they got back to their bunk, Blade put Kayli in the bottom bunk. "Since you can't really get up to the top, you can take my bed for now." He said. "Thanks" Kayli said yawning. "I guess you're tired" Blade said smiling. "Get some rest Kayli. If you need anything, I'm right above you." "Thanks Blade. You're the best" Kayli said, pulling a blanket over herself. And with that, Kayli went to sleep, as did Blade in the top bunk.
