Chapter 2

"As daylight dies"

Kayli fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. She was in total shock. Blade slowly walked forward. "Stay here" he said. He walked past 3 tents. On the first2, the flaps were wide open, and he could see inside. There were bodies of nude women, both human and fur. They had most likely been raped and tortured to death. Blade felt disgusted and angry.'How the fuck could anyone do something like this? Some of these girls are my age for Christ sake!' he thought. He took a black bandanna from a pocket on his combat vest, and tied it over his face to keep from being sick. Then, he heard something in the 3rd tent. Something was moving. He readied his rifle and stepped forward, using the barrel to push aside the flap of the tent and stepped inside. He could smell the blood in the air. There was a single body in the tent: that of a young girl, probably in her late teens or early 20s. 'Poor soul' he thought, lowing his rifle. All of a sudden, the body moved, causing blade to bring his rifle back up to his shoulder. It moved again, just gently rocking. He stepped forward and rolled it over with the barrel of his rifle. What he found made him gasp. 'Oh god...'he thought.

Kayli was devastated. Her friends, her family, gone forever. She was alone. There was no one left. She broke down and started crying uncontrollably.'Why?' she thought.'Why did they have to take everything away from me? What have I done to deserve this?' She heard someone approaching her, and looked up. It was blade, and he was carrying something wrapped up in a blanket, "Kayli, I'm so sorry for your loss, but we need to go NOW." he said with a sense of urgency. "The infected will be swarming this place soon" "OK" she said, her voice quiet and shaky. "Can you carry him?" blade asked, holding out the bundled blanket carefully."Him?" she asked, a bit confused."There was a child who survived. A young fox" he said. Her eyes went wide, and she took the bundle, cradling it and pulling the blankets back. In the blanket was a fox kit, perhaps 6 months old. "Tyler..." Kayli whispered, looking at the slumbering fox in disbelief. "I'm really sorry to ruin the moment, but we need to go" blade said. "OK" Kayli said, overjoyed that the fox kit she knew so well was unharmed.

She held the bundle close to her chest and followed blade at a fast pace away from the camp. After nearly an hour, they stopped. "Its getting dark. We should stop and make camp." blade said, taking off the massive backpack he was wearing. "Sounds good to me"Kayli said, still holding the fox kit close. The small orange ball of fur was still sleeping peacefully, which was surprising considering what happened earlier. Blade gathered some small logs and branches from the surrounding area, and set about to starting a fire. After a few matches and some flammable gel he used, he managed to get a warm fire going. He looked up at Kayli. She was sitting with her back against a fallen tree, looking lovingly at the fox kit she cradled in her arms. "You hungry? Blade asked. "Yes" she replied, her voice still quiet and shaky. Blade opened his pack, and pulled out a small package. "Its not that great, but its filling and nutritious" he said, handing it to her. "What is it?" she asked curiously. "Its an MRE. Military rations. Mostly dehydrated stuff" he said. "Oh, OK" she said, opening the pack. They both ate in silence.

"Umm...Blade?" "Yeah?" he said. "...thanks" she said shyly."I know you didn't have to help me earlier..." "Happy to help" he said smiling. It was quite dark now. Blade pulled a thick padded sleeping bag out of his pack. "Here" he said, passing it to Kayli. "Thank you" she said, taking it and unrolling it on the ground before climbing into it with the fox kit. He whimpered in his sleep before nuzzling into Kaylis chest. She smiled and hugged him close.

"So, what are you gonna do now?" Blade asked. Her smile faded. "I...I don't know" she said, remembering that she no longer had a place to call home. Blade was silent for a moment. "Well, if you want to, you can come with me and stay with my camp" he said. Kayli looked up, surprised by his kind offer. "Would I really be able to stay?"Kayli asked, hopeful of getting a new home."Of course" Blade answered. "Thank you so much Blade" Kayli said smiling

Suddenly, Kayli realized something. "Blade, isn't it dangerous to be sleeping out in the open like this?" she asked nervously. "Normally, yes, but I don't sleep much, so I'll keep watch and make sure you two stay safe" he replied. Kayli relaxed at hearing this. "Thank you" she said, and with that she quickly got to sleep. Blade smiled, and leaned against a nearby tree with his rifle in his lap ready to fight off anything to defend his new friend, and prepared himself for along night.
