"The End"

Chapter 1: The beginning of the end

It hurt. Everything did. Ever since the nightmare began. Constantly moving from dead town to dead town hurt, sleeping with a loaded gun by his side every night hurt, and it hurt knowing all his old friends and family were dead...or worse. All these things hurt, but months of being surrounded by death had made him numb. He was emotionless. Dead, so to speak, though the images of the beginning of the nightmare still haunted him.

He sighed. The past was the past and there was no point in dwelling on it. He had bigger problems to worry about. He stood up from the tree he was leaning against, and began walking back to his vehicle. He had come here looking for something, but found only more death. As he was walking, he heard a branch snap up ahead, about 10 metres in front of him. He stopped and immediately shouldered his rifle, clicking off the safety, ready to kill. He looked for the source of the sound, and was a bit surprised by what he saw. Instead of the walking corpse he expected, he saw a young white tigress. She hadn't noticed him yet, so he slowly and silently closed the gap between them. She was wearing a light green shirt and tattered blue jeans, looked as if she had just ran a marathon, probably trying to get away from some of those undead freaks.

"Are you OK?" he asked once he was about 2 metres away. She jumped in fright and looked up at him, her blue eyes wide with fear. She just stared at him for a minute. "P-please, d-don't hurt me" she finally said, in a quiet, scared voice. 'Something bad must've happened' he thought. " I'm not going to hurt you" he said in a reassuring voice. She seemed to calm down a bit but was still noticeably tense. "Are you OK? He asked again. "Yeah, I'm just really tired" she said. "Its not safe to be on your own out here" he said, a bit puzzled as to why she was out in middle of the dead zone in the first place. "I was with a group of survivors, but I got separated during a raid."she said sadly. Hearing this made him pissed off. He hated the raiders. All they did was fight and kill each other, instead of killing the undead legions. "What is your name?" he asked. "Kayli" she answered. "Well Kayli, if you want I can help you find your friends" he said to her. Kayli looked at him. "Are you serious?" she asked. "Yes" he replied. "Oh, thank you so much!"she said looking very relieved. "Come on, we need to get moving. I don't want to be out here after dark" he said after reaching down and helping her up."I need you to take me to where your group was last" "OK, follow me." she said, and with that they set off.

"What's your name?" Kayli asked after a few minutes of walking. He was silent for a minute. "Its been so long since anyone used my real name, I cant remember. Everyone calls me Blade."he finally said. He was too deep in thought to care. His mind was focused on the raiders, and slaughtering them all if they were nearby. He did however notice thick black smoke on the horizon. After another 20 minutes of walking in silence, he could smell something. Smoke, and a strange, vile scent that he didn't quite recognize at first.

The survivor camp finally came into view. It was mostly a bunch of military tents and old vehicles: cars, trucks, and even a school bus."We were always on the move. They should have left by now...oh god..."Kayli said covering her mouth, her eyes going wide."What is it...not again..."Blade said walking up behind her. There were bloody, mangled corpses everywhere. Blade finally recognized the smell. It was burning flesh.
