On the Mountaintop Away From the Storm

Finally reached the last poem, of 2021. Inspired by a hike I took that same year while I was in the Dominican Republic. Meant to be more uplifting since I want or wanted to end that year on a more positive note. Originally written in December 2021 but posted first day in January 2022.

On the Mountaintop Away From the Storm

By: A.X. Bueno

We left the storm behind us when to the mountain we proceeded to walk

It's supposed to take half an hour of climbing to get to the top and on the way we talked

Also admiring the views and scenery along the way as we made our way up

We tried to keep a steady pace but there were naturally times we had to letup

It's not exactly an easy hike especially when you lack the proper mountain getup

Sneakers trod with caution and some difficulty over the jagged edges of all the rock edges

Taking photos as well as we traverse up these stair wedges

We manage to make it to the top while it's still early in the morning

So we stand on El Morro, this mountain tall taking a break from all the mourning

There's a swing and a beaten path even on the mountaintop so we take pictures still

It's okay though we're on a vacation, of sorts and have got plenty of time to kill

The view is even more incredible up here and I'll continue to admire it till I've had my fill

Then I choose to look to the horizon and see the storm clouds we left behind

They actually look majestic from this viewpoint and I feel a sudden peace of mind

The storm is elsewhere and I don't think we'll run into it again

It's on another part of the island now with its distant rain

Getting back down again might be a bit of a strain

Heading down again is supposed to be easier but I'd personally disagree

Still on this mountaintop away from the storm and the rest of the world my spirit feels free

It might be scary going back down, there might be some fear

But I know this was worth it, it'll all be okay

I'll keep going forward, I'll move beyond all of yesteryear
