Chapter 13

ABC of wolf

After the first encounter of Grey and Snow things were touch and go for the first few weeks. Inside the enclosure they kept to them selves for the most part and did not talk much to one another only to Sarah when she would come by. Sarah found feeding the wolves odd because Grey still preferred to hunt his prey down but Snow had never hunted and expected to be fed. For a few days she growled each time Sarah would set her stainless steel dish down still wanting in the back of her mind to take Sarah down but respected Grey's wishes. During this time Grey did not talk much. Sarah would try to talk to Grey about Snow but he wanted nothing to do with her for the moment keeping those feelings hidden. One day after her constant questions he became tired of it.

"Sarah she has to want to be shown the ways of the wolf and since she has been here she still acts as she was I bet back at the facility. I ask for a companion and you bring me a dog thanks for the effort but no thanks." Sarah glared at Grey stepping towards him they had become comfortable with one another among close quarters and she knew he would not hurt her. "You ass she was the one who wanted to meet you and be here. She is as aggravated to be at itt as you were but honestly I feel more sadly for her as she was born into the human world never knowing what it is to be wolf. Then I bring her here and all you do is call her a dog which you know she is not. He curled a lip walking towards her then jumping his front paws to Sarah landing with is paws on her shoulders and nose to nose, his yellow eyes searching her's. "I call her a dog because she is no different than one, her food is served in a dish, she knows no one else really other than humans and obeys their commands. She does not know what it is to be wolf, to hunt, to be in the order of a pack. I will teach her but know a bit of blood may be shed in the process. I promise I will not kill her, she is the tame one which can be far more dangerous. A wild animal that does not know how to deal with it's own feelings may lash out in strange ways."

Grey left Sarah and padded around his enclosure marking it. This was one of the ways he felt that this land was his it was the wolf way even if he knew he was in a cage. He smelled Snow and stopped his marking to find her. He squinted looking through the night at the terrain thinking to himself that she was a dog and would find her in an obvious place. He moved more towards what he called (Grey's rock) sniffing about it where he had jumped down awhile back. For a moment he thought he smelled something different when something large crashed into him from above knocking him off his paws. He bared his fangs flipping back to his feet and turned only to see Snow in mid air headed right at his throat fangs bared as well. He had been caught off guard by the female showing how rusty he had become being in here past alpha male or not but now he was square in the sights of a very pissed off she wolf. She hit him hard grabbing his shoulder rather than his neck showing how little the she wolf knew. Still she was at the advantage and used her weight to drag him off his paws and to the ground. Her heart beat fast as she knew he was larger and probably more powerful than she was, but felt she had to show him her place to prove her self to him. He twisted his neck breaking her grasp and spun around almost nose to nose with Snow.

He felt a warm feeling on his shoulder and turned his head looking to where she bit him and now blood began to trickle from the wound. He laughed looking to her "well my my not bad for a dog, but next time if you want to take another down like that rather than go for the shoulder try the back of the neck or even better the throat." Her panting slowed and she growled turning to his side and began pacing back and forth. It was a habit from when she was growing up many wild animals do this as a form of comfort almost like a human baby sucking it's thumb. "You are such a mean soul Grey from the moment you met me you treated me like a dog, and call me one. And yet the dog just took down the wolf, I let you go because hurting you won't do us any good." He smirked sitting then leaning his head and washing the blood from his fur " you got lucky Snow and I could have just as easily turned on you and taken you out if I wished. I call you dog not to your face but it is what you have become. You eat out of a bowl rather than hunt with me, as do you drink the water they bring you rather than the stream that flows through this land. And worst of all in the time you have been here you have not howled once. I respect what you truly are just not WHAT you are now." "Then teach me Grey I will listen I just ask one thing of you.....to please not call me a dog I am wolf as you are. I know you see it I have seen you stare into my eyes before." She stood padding to him nose to nose and licked the tip. "I want to be friends Grey as Sarah said I was the one who made the decision to come here not so much to get out of that place but to meet you. Teach me Grey make me wolf."

Chapter 14

Seasons

After that night things changed between the two wolves. Grey accepted Snow and began teaching her how to be a wolf. Some things she picked up on very quickly hunting surprisingly came very naturally and although he did not admit it, she was faster than he was in a straight line. A big part of wolf life is regular play and they would spend their days running around the sanctuary one chasing the other then switching. There were many trees and rocks to hide in so games of hide and seek became regular. Sarah would laugh watching the two acting as pups at times rolling around growling at one another and such. They did not talk as much as before but they were happy so that was fine.

Sarah set up designated times when she would call on either of them to talk so there was data still coming in. The wolves knew her schedule and which one was to go with her. Sarah had now become comfortable being around Snow and would sit talking to her. "Well how goes your training with Grey? I saw the two of you take down a deer yesterday and saw you eat off if does that mean you will not need the bowl?" Snow turned to Sarah and tiled her head "my training is going well I guess sometimes I still think Grey does not like me and is doing this just to ease his boredom of this place. And yes you are right from now on I will be hunting live prey thank you I like it much better." Sarah had to take a breath at that thought then laughed "I don't think I will ever get used to that part of you wolves. Hmmm so what do you think of Grey, I mean is there a chance of romance?" Sarah had never seen a wolf blush but if one could Snow was and she spoke " oh he is well...... Grey you know what I mean. At times he is soft and gentle but others he becomes irate and very mean to me. He does not hurt me, just some times when I can not grasp what he is talking about or showing me he becomes cross. But I think he is very attractive even if I have not seen many other wolves I know he was once the alpha of his pack and he is powerful." Sarah nodded and reached a hand out to pet Snow "thank you for answering my questions now may I pet you? I know it seems silly but I have few ways to show my appreciation to you." Snow nodded and moved her head to Sarah's hand letting her touch the soft fur on her head.

The same night Sarah went looking for Grey. It took her some time to find him but he was seen at the far back corner of the enclosure. "Grey there you are what are you doing way out here?" He looked over his shoulder to her then back out gazing at the moon. "I am thinking Sarah I am still allowed to do that right? The other night I was running with Snow and a feeling came over me one that I had not felt in a long time. So long I almost forgot what it felt like. Sarah did not understand "what do you mean Grey is something wrong are you sick?" He turned plodding to Sarah and licked her nose " you silly human no, from the first night I met Snow I fell in love with her, she is beautiful. She has an amazing fire that has been bottled up and locked away. I am sure you have seen it too if you looked into her eyes am I wrong?" Sarah nodded wiping her nose then laid down in the grass near him "Well what is stopping you then tell her how you feel start fresh as you said yourself your old mate has probably taken a new mate." He growled at Sarah and for a moment felt rage. He moved over her and sniffed her throat thinking to himself "you humans are so fragile compared to even say a deer. Not even a half bite of your throat would be needed to kill you."

In a flash something hit Grey in the side knocking him off Sarah and rolling down the hill side. It was Snow and she was defending Sarah she snapped at Grey as they rolled coming to a stop the two wolves circled one another eyes locked teeth bared. "Why Grey why would you want to hurt Sarah you lied." "Snow I was not going to hurt her we were talking about part of my past that causes me pain. About my past mate that I will never see again and how.....how" He snapped at her once turned and walked away from both of them. Snow sat for a moment thinking then bounded after him jumping in front of him. "how what?" He squinted looking to her and sighed "how I have slowly fallen in love with you." He looked away as a tear rolled down his muzzle. Snow padded to him her eyes tracing his and she licked away his tear and licked his muzzle. "teach me to howl Grey."
