Falling Out and Falling In

Part 6

For NerubianKnight

By Draconicon

Helmrick woke to the feeling of a mouth around his cock and a massive soreness between his legs that he had never felt before. The griffin hissed through his clenched beak, but the soft sucking and wetness around his dick didn't go away. If anything, it got slightly more intense around his morning wood, and he focused on just breathing, letting his legs and crotch relax, and trying to piece together what had happened that left him in bed while getting a blowjob.

His memory was hazy, but he vaguely remembered the last few minutes of sober thought before he'd completely conked out. Something about going into the Overseer's office, a function in the computer, and then -

Then he just...felt weird. Like a passenger behind his own eyes, only able to look at what was going on and not entirely being able to understand how or why he was doing it. Even now, it felt like some sort of prison, leaving him controlled by someone else and only somewhat aware of what was happening at the time. It wasn't a good feeling, and he wasn't sure how long it had lasted, either. Time felt funny in those memories, and not in a good way.

He opened one eye very, very slowly, feeling the tiredness that lay in every muscle. A vague sense of exhaustion would have been understandable, but he felt utterly laid out by whatever he'd been doing. Or rather, whatever he'd been made to do.

Rattle. That...Overseer Rattle.

The name was like a key in his mind, and the memories came flooding back. Getting rimmed, fucking Axel three ways from Sunday, and then fucking the Deathclaw, and all while being entirely unpleasant in a very unfriendly sort of way. He could still see it in his mind's eye, hear his own voice saying things that he'd normally never say to someone else. It was like looking at some surreal horror -

Gluk. Gluk. Gluk.

And the cock sucking was reminding him of just how rough he'd been and how many times he'd cum yesterday. The stims were vaguely in the back of his brain, and he could feel his body paying the tab for just how hard they'd gone at it. No wonder his cock ached and his hips burned. No wonder everything felt like he'd taken a beating from someone in power armor. His insides had probably been worked over harder than anything he'd taken in a long, long time, and they were going to need some time to recover.

He opened his eyes a little bit more, looking down at Axel. The capybara must have come looking for him, and maybe there was a hint of the pheromones still in his system, because his eyes were glazed over as he sucked away, his head bobbing up and down along the griffin's shaft. Every few seconds, the tip came out, getting licked along the underside, near the barbs, before the capybara sucked it right back down his throat.

Fuck...

It was a strange mix of pleasure and pain as the capybara sucked his well-drained cock. His balls felt like they were aching worse than the rest of him, and he could only imagine just how much seed had been pumped out of them during the last few sessions. He groaned, finally lifting his head the rest of the way.

"Axel."

The capybara ignored him, paying more attention to his cock. Helmrick reached out to push him away, only for the smaller man to lunge forward, sucking the whole thing down his throat at once.

"Mmmph!"

He gripped the bed tighter, huffing and grunting as his cock rested deep in the mercenary's throat. He could feel every ripple of that clenching passage around his cock as Axel swallowed again, and again, and again, each time milking around the whole shaft until -

"MMPH!"

Helmrick went over the edge, groaning as he felt some dribble of seed escape him. He didn't know what had happened to bring even that much back, but he'd take it. The pleasure of release was tinged with the soft pain of running out of cum in his balls, feeling the dry orgasm demanding more of him as each little twinge and tug of his inner muscles and tubes ran him closer and closer to truly empty.

Once the paroxysms of pleasure passed, he grabbed the capybara more firmly and pulled him back. He tilted Axel's head back and tapped his cheek, firmly. Not so much as a slap, but more than a simple touch.

Clap, clap. The capybara blinked, shaking his head.

"Bluh. What? What happened?"

"You were giving me a blowjob. Don't do that again without command or permission," he said.

"Yes, sir." Axel blinked again. "Wait. I was what?!"

"A mistake on my part," Helmrick admitted, swinging his legs off the bed and immediately gritting his beak in discomfort. "Mmmph...Is there a medkit in here?"

"Not that I see. Blowjob. Explain."

"Pheromones."

"That is not an explanation."

"It's as much of one as you're getting until I get a stimpak or something." He shook his head as his muscles complained mightily about being forced to support him. He wanted nothing more than to lie down, and it was that desire that kept him sitting up. If he went down, he wasn't getting back up without help. "Should be one...should be one in the barracks, or in the office. Need it. Badly."

"Fine. But you better be able to explain this when I get back."

He nodded mutely as the capybara climbed over the Deathclaw's body in the doorway. It was fine, just sleeping, but he still stared at it for a moment before forcing himself to sit up a little straighter. He leaned back against the wall behind him, taking deep breaths as he resisted the urge to lie down once more. Stretching; stretching he could do.

As he leaned forward, getting as close to touching his toes as he could and fighting his tense muscles every step of the way, he went through his memories again. The scent in the air and thick musk had been one thing, but the feeling of identity, the commands, the helplessness of being someone else -

Overseer Rattle.

The name was all but burned into his mind, and he knew, deep down, that it wasn't going to be leaving his head. He'd carry that name in there for a long, long time, possibly until he died. There was no way to remove it now that it'd gotten in, and not after he had surrendered his body for nearly an hour.

An hour. Just like this, fucking that hard, for just an hour of shit. Mmmph. Those stims had done a number on him, that was for sure.

"Mmmph..."

The Deathclaw was stirring. The tendrils coming out of his back were moving back and forth, and his breathing paused slightly longer than would be acceptable for a shift in sleep patterns. The lumbering creature had been involved in a more intimate way than he had entirely expected, even with the DCD that Gruth wore. He had thought to see more fighting, more of a semblance of the beast within, but there was none of that. There was only eagerness, wanton behavior, and now...

Now, a very good guardian. He was starting to see one of the practical reasons for allowing a Deathclaw to be part of the group rather than just wanton slaughter when faced with stronger enemies.

Axel returned with the stimpak, tossing it over, and Helmrick injected it into his thigh. Almost instantly, he could feel his muscles unclenching, slowly returning to their standard positions, no longer pulling and on the verge of cramping. He let out a long, slow wheeze of relief, shaking his head as he no longer felt like he needed to scream.

"Now, talk. What the fuck happened in there?" Axel asked.

"That...if I don't miss my guess, that was the experiment of this particular Vault. Pheromone manipulation," he muttered, still rubbing his thighs to get the blood flowing, to ease them through the healing process. "That merchant had something of the same sort, but his was customized, no longer quite the same as it is here. I doubt that he entirely knew how to use that thing, let alone bring out the full extent of its capabilities. The men and women of this Vault, however..."

"You think they were that good at controlling people?"

"I think that they took it further than that. From what I can remember, we weren't ourselves when we were on the pheromones. We were someone different. I...I was Overseer Rattle, and you...You were the security chief. Bannon, I...I think the name was Bannon."

Axel's surprised expression told him that the name run true, at least. He continued.

"I think that they were finding ways to distill identity, behavior, and routines into a scent, which could then be made airborne. Spread that around in the right area -"

"You could turn enemies to allies. Even into the same ally, all the way around."

"Indeed."

The idea of having a room full of people that thought they were him, that acted like him, that had the same desires and same instincts as him, was a terrifying yet intriguing thought. He could see why that would be an experiment worth doing, but at the same time, he could see the hundreds of ways that it could go off the rails. One little sample going off could end up completely erasing someone else's identity, and more than that...

He remembered the various bodies, the pleasure that they had been embracing up to the point of death. He could easily imagine that someone at the top - perhaps even the Overseer - had been overcome with his own urges and altered the pheromones, continuing to pump them out so that they never entirely weakened as they took over the population of the Vault. Doing that would ensure that they would go at it perpetually, never ceasing even as their bodies started giving out, leading to the eventual poses of almost comedic death, wrapped up in their own pleasure. It was a macabre thing to imagine, and worse to see.

Shaking his head, he pushed himself forward and off the bed. His legs wobbled, but managed to support him without sending him tumbling to the ground. No aches, either which was the more important thing.

"What now? Blow the place?" Axel asked.

"I doubt even you have that sort of firepower, and there's no way that the armory would have that much to work with. Even if everything was working, the most that we could do is blow the reactor, and that would just spread radiation everywhere in the area. Possibly killing us, as well. I'm not precisely ready to die, though I don't know about you on that matter."

"..."

"No. Let's see what else we can take from the Vault, find anything that can make this trip worth it, and then I'll delete everything from the main computer."

"You can do that?"

"It's not hard."

And he would have done that to the Enclave computer before he left, if he'd had the chance. However, they would have noticed that destruction well before he could have left the base, and that would have been traced to him, eventually. Best not to have a trace for them to follow; best not to think of what he might have done.

"Well...shall we?"

#

With Gruth's help, they were able to both find the armory and get it open. Vaults were quite secure with their outside doors, and they were built into the ground in such a way that very few creatures could get anywhere close to them without breaking off some natural appendage or other, but they were not built to hold up to Deathclaws on the inside. The sharp claws of the big beastie cut right through the armory door, revealing what Vault B1 had to its name.

The answer was, not much. There was a half-broken gauss rifle against the far wall that immediately had his attention, but it was clear to Helmrick that most of the Vault's defenses had clearly been meant to come from the chemical work that it had done. He shook his head, walking over to the busted rifle and hefting it. It almost cracked as soon as he picked it up, but there was just enough weight to it to tell him that it could be made to work. He nodded to himself.

"That'll work."

"If you're taking that, I'm going to grab some of the grenades over here," Axel said, shaking his head. "And I think there's an armored suit over there, if you want it."

"I'll consider it."

"I'd suggest it; the coat can go over it, and you'll want that armor. Not gonna see all the threats that are out in the Wasteland," the capybara said, kneeling down and sorting through the boxes of ammunition. "Seriously. Best to keep an eye on yourself as much as anyone else."

It was a fair statement. Glancing at the armored suit, he had to admit that it wasn't the worst thing that he'd seen. There were far more protective pieces of power armor in the Enclave base, but this was more like a layer of metal, a harness that would go over the body, fitted with different, modular plates that could do different jobs. Some of them even looked like they were properly made for environmental work, too.

But the part that convinced him to take it was the belt. Properly fitted, it had pockets and pouches for all kinds of things, and that would make a big difference while exploring the Wasteland. He took it and situated it around his middle, shaking his head as he did so, and carefully tucked the gauss rifle under his arm.

I can't believe I'm really doing this.

It hadn't hit him until just that moment how far he was from his old life as a scientist in the Enclave. He'd lived in an enclosed area for almost his entire life, forgetting about the outside world, almost dismissing it as a thing. All it had to recommend it, for so long, had been the easy subjects and places to experiment that didn't harm those that lived within the base. Now, however?

Now, he was part of a group that was stealing from an abandoned Vault. He was crossing the Wasteland in the company of a pair of mercs that had every reason to see him with suspicion, even though he had helped them out. He was making his way to an unknown destination, operating on hope and almost nothing more. It was a very bleak feeling that surrounded him, and it almost made him shake as he realized that the stable foundation that he'd lived with all his life was, simply put, no longer there.

He stiffened his grip on reality, shaking his head. Pulling the suit off the wall, he tossed it over his shoulder and waved at the other two.

"Loot as you will. I'll be deleting the files from the Overseer's office."

#

"Well, you were a very depraved man," he muttered under his breath, shaking his head at some of the old encrypted files. "Encouraging them to such debauchery...and to such...extreme degrees..."

There were many different behavior profiles listed among the old logs. He ignored most of the journals of the former Overseer. After reading the first one and having a resurgence of the other man's personality in his head, almost pushing forward enough to have viable speech, he'd ignored what the others said and deleted them to avoid temptation. If it could come forward that hard without the pheromones in the air, he didn't want to take the risk of sliding out of his own head.

The behavior profiles were fascinating enough. They had managed to create a copy of every Vault dweller's personality in scent form, ensuring that they could theoretically be immortal, though not with any continuous streak of memory between them. The different Vault dwellers would not have remembered their past lives, and the scents would have needed updating to carry on any new experiences, but it was, theoretically, a way of passing someone on from body to body without having to worry about the whole removal of the brain.

But more than that, they had created various identity-less profiles. He found one that was suited for breeding, meant to overwrite the general inclination of the female that it infected and leave her with an insatiable need to be bred, to mother the child in her womb, and to ensure that it was passed on without any attachment before spreading her legs to do it again. The sheer insanity that he read in that file had shown that it had mostly worked, too; three females in the old Vault had been put through that treatment, and had contributed a great many experimental subjects for identity transfer.

It was terrifying, and at the same time, mildly arousing to see what could be done with scent and pheromones. He didn't know how much of it was self-aggrandizement in the logs - after all, scientists could lie about what they achieved as much as anyone else - but if they'd come anywhere close to the various things that the profiles talked about...

The Enclave could enslave a breeding army with this...breed a 'clean' species from scratch and just keep going...wiping out everyone else that stood in their way...

The idea sent a shiver down his spine and made him want to vomit. The idea of them having that much control was completely reprehensible.

He deleted that profile, the mad-soldier one, the sleeper agent, and more. Every single profile that had a danger to it, that could be used to completely shatter someone and make them into a blank tool, was deleted, not just from the main computer but from the Pip Boy files that he had already shifted over.

There were several, however, that he did keep. There were some that were clearly more customized for the head of the Vault, such as a 'Sex Slut' one that was clearly going to be used for personal pleasure, as well as several others that might be of use. One that was certainly more subtle, called 'Erstwhile Ally,' also was kept. He didn't know what the specifics on that one actually were, but he looked forward to giving it some research.

He had almost completely deleted the goods on the computer when he came to one of the last logs. It was a video file, and one that he hadn't seen before. He paused, remembering what had happened when he had executed a previous file, but his curiosity drove him to open it, anyway.

The snake face of Overseer Rattle looked out at him, his head tilted slightly to the side before moving to look at the camera more evenly. The man looked half-mad already, his eyes glinting in the green-black of the camera, but he spoke with a smooth, even voice.

"Commence recording. Identity: Overseer Rattle. Subject: The end time." The snake shook his head. "I don't know how much longer we have, but I doubt that it's much. I know that we've burned through more than we have...more than we could ever make...heh. It was my fault, my pleasurable fault...but what a life this has been. What a time as Overseer in this place..."

There was...not quite regret there, but definitely sadness. Probably something about having to leave behind the easy life of Overseer and his impending death. Helmrick shook his head, about to turn off the recording -

"They died without pain. Or, well, they will. They haven't yet...but they will."

He blinked, looking back at the screen. The snake sighed.

"I don't know when someone will come to the Vault and see this. Perhaps you're a Vault-Tec employee wondering what happened. Maybe you're from the government. Maybe you are someone that broke in and you think that this is all magic. I don't care, I suppose. I don't care, because I'm not here to tell you in person. None of us would be. If anyone opened the Vault doors, they're already dead, and if anyone stayed, then they probably died by now. And if anyone finds us before then, I'll delete this, and take...

"Heh. Who I am kidding? There is no chance that anyone will find us before we all die. Science has gone mad...we've all gone mad..."

The snake looked like he was going to laugh and was trying to stop himself. The sheer difficulty he had holding it back was...more disturbing than Helmrick wanted to admit. Rattle continued.

"_The work we've done on pheromone manipulation is nothing short of miraculous...and catastrophic. The mortal body is made to respond to the scents and pheromones around it; the body was long ago developed to know what they meant and respond instantly to it. From mating instinct to the response to danger, it is all there. And as we developed, our ability to sense such things have waned, but our ability to respond has grown to make up the gap.

"By increasing the pheromones to the point where nobody can miss them, it forces a much stronger response from the brain. An undeniable response, something that forces its way to the fore and ensures that what is commanded happens. Our minds...cannot resist. They will not, cannot, shall not..._

"And for that...for that, we have created a weapon that will allow anyone to live forever. Anyone to do what they wish. Anyone...to create a world...solely of themselves, if they so wished."

Overseer Rattle took a deep breath, and the sound matched his name; it was barely different from a death rattle. Helmrick stared as the speech continued.

"_I said we spent too many resources. We were too high to think of what we were doing, how much we were losing. I...we...We would take them. Do what we wanted. Try and fix it. The constant forgetting...so much...lost. We can't remember...I can't remember how many times I've been rebooted by my own pheromones. How many times...I've just...gone back, to forget, to do it better. Too many times. This is the last time. It has to be the last time.

"We are going to go into full pleasure. Die without pain. Die with nothing but the urge to rut and fuck and...and whatever else we can do. Go until we can't anymore, until we die of exhaustion. They deserve that. They deserve that, and it will be better, and...and maybe...heh. No. We can't solve it. We can't solve it. We can't solve it. We -_

"I can't solve it."

The snake looked at the camera gain, and he seemed to stiffen up, standing a little straighter than he had before. His eyes were less glassy, and he looked like he was able to summon some faint bit of his past self.

"_This is Overseer Rattle. Despite the logs, the experiment...is a failure. Do not apply more than twice to anyone. Do not use the same override more than twice. It will cause cognitive and mental decay. Whatever the logs say otherwise is a lie. Do not do this. Do not. It is the only thing I can tell you.

"This is Overseer Rattle. Signing off._

"

The screen went dark, and the snake's face was gone. Helmrick spent more than a minute staring at the screen and his Pip Boy before finally transferring the file over to his wrist computer.

As simple as the message was, there had been something in the madness of the other man. It was as cautionary a tale as ever there had been, and he had seen in that moment that Rattle had been more than one person in his own head. In some ways, that was almost more terrifying. Instead of being a man with two different people in his mind, he was a man that had multiple versions of himself.

Which man was the saint?

Which man was the sinner?

Was there any difference at the end of the day?

#

He met Gruth and Axel outside the Vault once he had finished clearing the computer and the back-up databases. The chemicals in the vents were all but dry, but to be sure that they wouldn't be refilled, he drained the chemical profiles from every computer that he could find and ordered all chemicals to be vented into the armory. It would probably reach a combustible level at some point, but that wasn't going to be his problem. Not when they were far, far away from this hellhole.

The other two had clearly been busy. In addition to having some grenades, Axel had managed to fix several ammo pouches to his belt, and his armor had been shined and clearly given some special attention. The combat suit looked like it had been specially treated for something, and as Helmrick stared, the capybara chuckled.

"Anti-laser coating. Some reflective mirroring."

"Ah. You expect those chasing us to use those?"

"Either we run into more of your guys - and while it isn't good enough to reflect plasma, it'll at least mitigate that stuff - or some of the Brotherhood. They're scouring everything they can, and they're not friendly."

"Particularly not to my sort," the griffin said.

"No, not really."

Helmrick turned back to the console, trying to put the idea of getting caught by the Brotherhood out of his mind. They were never kind to the Enclave prisoners that they found, from all reports, and considering that he was a scientist, they would be particularly rough. They would want to get as much information on Enclave weaponry and projects as they could. For all that he had heard that the Brotherhood operating in the Capital Wasteland wasn't as bad as some of the others, he did not want to test that.

Shaking his head, he plugged the console into his Pip Boy. It took all of two button presses for the hinges on the door to start swinging, the massive gear swinging back into place.

"Well, that'll keep anyone else from getting in, but...why?" Axel asked as the door started sliding back into its fittings. "Thought you were deleting all that stuff."

"Deleted files have a risk, however small, of being restored. And there is the possibility of using the labs to create more."

And that was something that he did not need to see happening. This nightmare spreading through the Wasteland, or anywhere south of it, was not going to happen. He wasn't going to shut down all science, nor did he think that all Vaults would be as bad as this one, but he wasn't going to risk the possibility of anyone getting in there without some serious tools of their own.

Click. The Vault sealed, and B1 was once more locked off from the Wasteland. There would be no more of the pheromone experiments of that sort, at least.

"Where now?" Axel asked.

"I would have thought that obvious. South."

"Still heading for the Carolinas, then?"

"It seems the only real option. Virginia will likely be difficult enough, but once we're through...well, hopefully, the rest of it will be more passable. And civilized."

"We'll see," Axel said, shaking his head. "Well, least we got Gruth on our side. That'll give us a fighting chance."

"Yes...Gruth."

A Deathclaw that submitted to the DCD without the same sort of fighting that the other Deathclaws put up, and one that had a great deal more intelligence to his credit than some of the non-monstrous species out there. He glanced at the aquatic herm, remembering the breeding that he'd put the creature through at the Enclave base and in the Vault. There had been something there, something that understood and went with the situation. Pleasure, yes, had been involved, but there was more than that in that small skull of his. Something that was worth keeping in mind, and something that might be worth pushing for a conversation with, too.

"Well? Shall we?" Axel asked.

"I suppose we should."

"Right. Let's get going."

#

They managed to make good time down the highways. For all that most of them had been blown to hell for a while, they still formed a path connecting north to south, and that was all they needed. All told, Helmrick would guess that they covered twenty miles that day, and that was enough for him to feel it. The stimpak could only do so much, after all, and he groaned when he finally sat down at their chosen campsite.

Gruth was off already, the big brute seeking out fuel for a campfire, and both Axel and Helmrick laid their weapons over their laps at the same time. They paused, blinking as they both did the same thing, before Axel chuckled and shook his head to himself. The capybara stretched out one leg, grunting as his knee popped.

"You really think that you can fix that thing?" the capybara asked. "Looks pretty busted."

"I need some kind of weapon."

"Yeah, but you can find all kinds out here. Why that one?"

"One, it's an energy weapon, and I do better with those." He grunted as he pulled his new tool kit from his suit's belt. "And this one, while a little outsized compared to the ones I'm used to, is at least familiar. I can get used to the size; it would take me longer to used to the kick-back and ballistics of a standard firearm."

"Fair. Two?"

"Two, I know how to fix it. Mostly. It will be a bit of a work in progress, but it can be done."

"And three?"

He looked up.

"Three, if it comes down to it, I can hook this to a nuclear generator - or any other significant power source - and turn it into a bomb if I really, really have to. I can't do that with other firearms."

"...I should have stopped after two."

"Perhaps."

Not that Helmrick had any plans of blowing anything up, but now that he had seen the absolute depravity of one of the Vaults, he knew something worse could be on the horizon. Perhaps Vault B1 could be the worst of them, but until he knew that for sure, he wanted a back-up. And more importantly, a gauss rifle was a very potent weapon, and that meant that he didn't have to worry about protecting himself as much while the others were gone. Not much could stand up to a full-frontal assault from one of these.

As he worked on the rifle, he caught a different glint out of the corner of his eye. He looked up to see that Axel had a Pip Boy around his wrist, too.

"Found that in the Vault?" he asked.

"Hmm? Yeah, thought it might be useful."

"You radio work?"

"Yeah, but - oh. Right. Yours can probably be tracked, right?"

He nodded; it was the main reason that he hadn't used it while they were on the move. If he didn't have it active, then anyone from the base that decided to scan frequencies wouldn't pick up an Enclave receiver further out.

Axel fiddled with his, and the speaker crackled to life. It was Three Dog's channel, and the first thing that he heard shocked him.

"Well, kiddies, it looks like some peace and justice is coming to the Capital Wasteland. That crazy kid from Vault 101 has just walked right up to the Enclave at the Memorial and booted 'em straight outta there. They're running for the hills and the Brotherhood is chasing them down. Looks like we can finally get back to normal around here, where the biggest worries are nothing more than feral ghouls and the occasional mirelurk. And who knows? Maybe that machine in there will give us all the clean water that the docs promised us, after all..."

The pair of them looked at each other. The Enclave had been kicked out of the Capital Wasteland, which meant that they were running wild. More than that, it meant that there was a massive clean-up operation going on up north. Any hesitation that either of them might have felt about going south evaporated right then and there. South was the only route that they had open to them, and now, they'd have to take it even more carefully, what with clean-up teams heading down and Enclave forces perhaps running this way.

Just when he thought things were getting simpler, they found a way to get even more complicated.

The End

Summary: Helmrick wakes up more or less himself, and starts to put together what happened. The rest of the group gets ready to move out.
