Beneath the Obsidian Veil, Chapter 1

The first chapter of BTOV! [This chapter contains only a little of violence that's it...]

As we stepped into the final quarter of our most important basketball game, my brother subbed in for me. I high-fived his hand and ran back to our row of chairs. My teammates reached out their hands and clapped me as I returned to my seat. There were seven minutes on the clock, and we were only nine points behind. I asked Marc to pass me a Gatorade. He threw me a bottle, and I caught it and opened it frantically. I hadn't drunk any water during the halftime break, despite playing three whole quarters. I drank the whole bottle in one gulp and placed the second one under my chair. I had been in a state of frenzy for most of the game, yet we were still losing due to the strength of the opposing team. However, I won't say I'm the best player on the team, but I think I'm the most hard-working one.

When I was only a pup, my brother and I always practiced basketball during his summer holidays. Each morning, my brother had to wake me up at eight in the morning and tell me to get dressed so he could teach me basketball. We always laughed and enjoyed the moments we shared. It was very fun, except for the part where I always got beaten by my brother. During the summer holidays, our parents were often away on work trips, so he had to take care of me.

"Shot!" my brother yelled.

"Get the rebound!"

Then a bunch of players gathered under the hoop to try to grab the ball. The crowd of players suddenly froze. Confused, I asked our coach what happened, and he also had no idea. As the players cleared away from the square, a wolf was lying injured under the hoop.

We all rushed towards the injured wolf, concern evident on our faces. Coach Thompson knelt down next to him to assess the situation. The crowd fell into a hushed silence, and the atmosphere turned somber.

"Is my brother going to be okay?" I asked Coach Tom, my voice trembling with worry.

Coach Thompson examined the wolf carefully. "He took quite a hard fall. Looks like a sprained ankle, possibly more. We need to call 911 immediately."

I reached for my phone in my pocket and dialed the emergency number. While waiting for help to arrive, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. On one hand, I was concerned for my brother, hoping he would recover soon.

"Will you still be able to play?" Coach asked me.

"Yeah, man, of course," I responded with confidence.

"That's my boy!" Coach patted me on my back.

After the medical team arrived, we continued the game. I substituted for my brother and finished the game. The opposing team was really lucky when they blind-shot the last ball, so we lost by three points. In the locker room, our coach gave us a long pep talk on how we did our best and how much he appreciated the hard work we put in.

"We'll get them next time! And I think that'll be two days from now?" I said, trying to cheer everyone up.

"Yes! We still have a chance to beat them on Friday! Let's give them a tough time like tonight!" Coach said.

Then everyone prepared to shower and go back home for the night when my brother showed up at the door.

"Oh, Sebastian, how're you feeling?" I ran towards him, checking him for any obvious injuries.

"I'm fine, I'm fine... I just sprained my ankle, that's it!" Sebastian said, cheerfully.

"Oh, thank the Lord... We lost tonight..." Nolan said, looking down.

"Yeah, I heard. They were just lucky tonight because I got injured!" Sebastian joked, "If I was still there, we would've crushed them!"

Nolan chuckled and then teased Sebastian, "Yeah, sure. If you were there, we definitely wouldn't have lost tonight."

"Hmm, right. Now Imma talk to the coach, wait for me outside the locker room when you're done! Mom and dad are ordering pizza tonight." Sebastian said.
