#10 of Protecting the Line

draft 1 of Book 4 in the inheriting the Line Series.

Denton deals with revelations he never wanted to learn by focusing on home, his family, his company, and finding his missing friend. All the while, a hidden war spreads around the world.

Supposedly in charge of running the war against his uncle, Arnold discovers that it's a difficult thing to do when every elder around barely wants to sniff in his direction. But he's an Orr, and he fully intends on kicking them all in the balls, if that's what it takes to save their collective miserable asses.

I woke with a start and immediately moved to get out of bed.

"Where are you going?" Martin mumbled, grabbing my arm.

"Eddy needs me," I replied, a clear memory of hearing him cry.

"He's find Dent, lie back down." Martin yawned and pulled on my arm.

"No, he's hungry." At least I thought he was, the memory was fading.

Martin chuckled and shifted. "If he's hungry, Loraine will see to him."

"Who?"

"His mother. You were dreaming, you can't hear your son crying." He pulled harder and this time I turned, the confusion over if I had actually heard Eddy. "I used to have those all the time in the months after Esteban's birth. And unless you've started lactating, you aren't going to be able to do much. Here, let me check."

He leaned forward, and I gasped as he bit one of my nipples, then he was sucking on it and I let out a moan.

"I'm not tasting anything," Martin said, pulling away. I shoved his head back against my chest. He hungrily munched on the nipple.

I whispered a "fuck," as I straddled him, grinding my cock against his stomach and grabbed the bottle of lube on the side table. I dumped too much of it on my hand and it overflowed as I moved it behind me to slick Martin's hard cock.

I scooted back until it was between my ass cheeks, ground against it a few times, held it in place and pushed back until it slipped in me. I didn't pause once it was all in. I moved forward and back, eyes closed, not quite certain I was awake.

Martin let go of the nipple, placed his hands on my ass and squeezed. "Sorry, but need to hurry this along. I have to get more than two hours of sleep, I have to be in the office first thing in the morning and my boss really hates it when I'm not in within my four walls." He picked up the pace, thrusting hard.

"I--" groaned. "I--" moaned. "Fuck, I thought you were going to talk him into not insisting on that so much. Oh balls, harder."

Martin obliged. "He was busy with new hires all day, so I couldn't have one-on-one time with him." He moaned and bit down on my neck.

I held him against me, my cock moving between us as his moved in me. I thought of Him as the orgasm hit. Thanked him for Eddy, for my friends, for the sex.

Martin fell back on the bed, panting. I fell next to him and was asleep again.

"Still nothing?" Maximilian asked.

"No," came the response over the phone, Jeffrey Noble, out of Georgia. "We have people watching the interstate for two tigers traveling with a collie, and in thirty-five silver Eldorado, but there are a lot of ways in and out of Florida."

"I have one of my men looking the place where they stayed over," Euclio Trebellius said, a hint of anger in his voice. "You had no business coming into my city without informing me."

"Time was of the essence and I wasn't going to waste any with posturing. That's my friend we're talking about."

"It is my city! You Rasia are all the same. All nice and good talk when you're insinuating yourself in our lives, but the moment you want something you don't care about respecting boundaries."

"And you wonder why--"

"Why don't we take a breath," Maximilian said, looking at me. "Screaming at each other isn't going to help find Stephan. Euclio, did your man find anything?"

"He saw the collie, Stephan, there, but something got in the way of his sight. He said it felt like a shielding sigil, but he should have been able to work around it if it was. He's confident there was someone else there with him, but he doesn't know who. He couldn't hold on to the vision when they entered the car."

"Id that some form of far sight?" I asked.

"Tycho sees the past."

"Asayi, anything in Alabama?"

"No. I have a team of shifters going through every camera feed close to the interstates, as well as any charging station. If that have left Florida, they found a way to do so without being seen."

"Stupid question here," I said, "but is it possible to power a car with magic?"

"It can be done," Jeffrey said, hesitatingly. "It's possible to create electricity with phrases, but it then needs to go through a transformer so it would simply blow the engine."

Maximilian nodded. "Marting blew up three engines trying to get it to work. Just about anyone who loves driving's tried it."

"It is easier on old gas engines," Euclio said. "They are more robust and it's all kinetic energy, but those are now illegal."

"Okay, any trail of bodies?" I asked.

"No," Jeffrey stated.

"It is not that simple," Asayi said. "The police servers are hardened against intrusion. I have slicers working on getting in, but until that happens, I only know what is reported on the news."

I opened my mouth, but Maximilian shook his head. "The church went through every police department in the city after they found out about you."

"You cost us any contact we had within the law enforcement agencies," Euclio stated.

"That isn't what I meant and you know it, Euclio. Denton's situation was exceptional. We didn't know, he didn't know. What happened because he was a police detective and Society was not his fault."

The sigh that came was tired. "He is a Rasia, Maximilian, you can not know that it wasn't planned from the beginning."

"I knew his father. I can tell you that he had not planned any such thing for Denton."

"He was a Ras--"

"I knew him!" The cougar snapped his muzzle shut and rubbed his face.

You okay? I mouthed. He nodded. My father's death had hit him harder than me because unlike me, he remembered him. The two of them had been closer than anyone within the Society I'd met to date. It caused issued between us, but I was hopeful we'd resolve them.

"Euclio, just like Denton, his father wasn't typical of his family. All he wanted was a simple life without any of the politics the Rasias delighted engaging in. Even if he hadn't been murdered, he would have kept Denton out of it."

The door to the office opened, and a collie entered. I was on my feet and took a step in the new arrival's direction, my happiness crashing down as I realized he wasn't Stephan.

"Gentlemen, We'll pick this up later," Maximilian said, "something just came up here."

I tried to understand why the man's appearance was confusing me.

"Niclas, what are you doing here?" Maximilian asked.

"My son goes missing while under your protection, Maximilian, I have grown tired of your assurances that you will find him. It has been too long. I want to know what is being done to find Stephan. I want to know now."

Stephan's father.

I looked at Max, swallowing my guilt. He'd told me he was staying in Germany, that there was no reason for him to come here. The collie looked me over, then dismissed me.

"Well?" the collie asked.

Maximilian sighed. "Denton, why don't you head back and let me and Niclas talk? We can pick this up later."

"Shouldn't I--" I hesitated, "I mean, it's my--"

"It isn't," Maximilian cut me off, his tone firm. "We talked about this already. But I need to deal with this first. About we meet for dinner?"

"Not dinner. We both know what could happen after that. I'll call you tomorrow and we can talk then." I headed out.

"Who is he?" the collie asked.

"Chief of security for the city," Maximilian replied. "He's part of--" I closed the door.

I called Martin. "Stephan's father is in town, did you know?"

"No. I thought Dad had convinced him to stay home."

"He's had enough of waiting. What can you tell me about him? Stephan's avoiding talking about him anytime I asked. I got he's the Germany elder, and that he'd very business-oriented, and that Stephan didn't quite get along with him."

"Niclas Brukammer is a severe man. Definitely all business. I met him a few times, but never had to deal with him. He owns most of the manufacturing in Germany under one name or another. Some people say his great-grandfather pulled Germany out of the post-war recession single-handedly, but I doubt that. I do know, for a fact, that his family indirectly supported Hitler. Before you comment, we're not saints,"

"I knew that one already. So can I expect him to leave the search alone?"

"Not now that he's here. He is going to want to be involved. In charge of things actually."

"How long until he figures out it's my fault?"

"Dent, this isn't your fault."

"I took Stephan to see the Orrs. Whatever they got on him that got him to help them escape happened there. You know that."

"You didn't force him, he insisted, just like I did. You didn't want any of us to come, remember?"

"I was in charge, my responsibility."

"That's bullshit. We're all adults. We make our own decisions." Martin paused, and I got in my car, but kept the phone to my ear, leaning back. "Dent, did you and dad talk?"

I sighed. "No, Brukammer arrived before the meeting was over. I didn't even get to tell him Damian was in town."

"What? Why is this the first I'm hearing about that? Those Orrs were supposed to keep him away. Fuck, how are you? Did he do anything?"

"He just wanted to talk, reassure me he wasn't planning anything, as if I'd trust his word. And you didn't hear about it because it's been a busy few days, also, and forgive me if this hurts, it's not something you needed to know about."

"Dent, I-- you--" he sighed. There was a lot of that going around recently. "No, you're right. Still, I wished you'd told me, as a friend, I'd have been there to help."

"There was nothing to do, still isn't. Until I figure out why he's really in town, there's nothing to do at all."

"What about the other thing?"

I didn't sigh this time. I swallowed it, stumped on it and made sure it didn't come out. "Martin, I don't know what there is to say. I know your father didn't intend for it to happen the way it happened. And I know that she didn't know anything about it."

"She has a name you know."

"I know, and anything I even think about it, I want to spit. Martin, I don't know this is something that can be talked through. I was able to sit by her and explain she would remain in Eddy's life even if I can't stand her. But the magic raped me, Martin. I can't be angry at Him for it, and trust me I tried, but he's too impersonal. Her and your father are the only face of what happened, and it isn't easy accepting that neither of them intended to do that to me."

I closed my eyes. "Look, me and your dad, we're going to resolve it, somehow, but her? I don't know if I'll ever be able to look at her and not remember how much joy she took in what happened."

"Don't stress about her. So long as you don't actively mistreat her she has no reason to complain."

"I don't like how dismissive you sound."

"Dent, she wasn't promised a husband. She was promised freedom to have a life. You could take your son from her and she'd have no recourses."

"I'm not--"

"I know. You're not that kind of man. I'm just saying that you don't have to agonize over resolving whatever chasms is between the two of you. She doesn't matter to your family."

"That wasn't how I was raised, Martin."

"And that's a good thing. You don't want to know how the Rasia treated the mothers. Any progress on finding a place?"

"No, but at least I've gotten Tom to stop showing me fortresses. So now he's on penthouses throughout the city, with state-of-the-art security and guards patrolling the halls. I don't think he gets the idea I'm going to raise my son there. I don't want it to feel like a prison."

"If you want, I can put you in touch with my agent, she's pretty good."

I laughed. "No. Sorry, but no. She has no taste, whoever she is."

"What are you talking about?"

"Have you looked at your duplex? I mean have you stood outside and looked at it? It's like they asked two different construction company to built each half, without talking to each other and then just stuck them together. I don't need Zee to tell me that wood one side and brick on the other doesn't work. Sorry, but as nice as the inside is, I wouldn't want people to know I lived there. I do like the idea of a duplex thought, she could live on one side, I on the other, have a few connected rooms so we can both take care of Eddy."

"You really think my house is ugly?"

"Yeah, sorry. But I'm the guy with no fashion sense, so take it for what it's worth. I'm heading to the office, so I'll see you there. Oh and thanks for the work at the government office. They called yesterday and they're finally sending someone to evaluate our trainers."

"Told you I was good in the field."

I chuckled. "Your dad is going to kill me, if I purposefully put you in danger."

"Just let him fuck you next and he'll get over it."

I chuckled again. "I'm working on that, so eventually." I disconnected and slotted the phone in the ignition. As I pulled out of the Cormoran estate I looked around for Tom's car, and as if on cue, a crimson Precision pulled away from the curb.

"I don't need a fucking escort to drive around town, Marrows," I grumbled. "I can't wait to get you certified so I can put you in charge of gun training and make sure you can't hound my ass all the time."
