#5 of Promise

Another day passed by and another day began, The Professor of SAIA, a grey wolf with blonde hair and a grim attitude stepped quietly into his second home, the clinic. He cleared his throat and stood at the doorway to the darkened room. The sting of rubbing alcohol and strange experiments leaked into his nose and made his eyes burn, it was not an unpleasant scent to him however. The clean stink of a docter's office or a mad scientists lab energized him with a spark inspiration. He grinned as he took in the stench and leaned forward like a fool in a trance. With a pleasant yet twisted state of mind, he reached to his right and pawed around for the tiny light switch...

"...What the crap!?" The wolf growled as he was not greeted by the clean and organized lab but by torn books thrown on the floor, the yellow walls clawed and scratched out, and the various glass diplays jars destroyed and shattered. His clinic was completely trashed, even his beloved chair was torn up, it's cotton stuffing somehow sticking to the ceiling.

The Professor's yellow eyes twitched and a flame rose from his head. The first thing he thought was "Whichever student decided to do this is going to die, no egg beater will be involved..." He snorted furiously and entered the trashed clinic to gather clues on the culprit. However, the moment he stepped in, a harsh screeching flooded his mind. He grunted and held his head in his paws and he gritted his teeth in pain. The sound of screaming with a strange static and someone scratching a chalkboard all rose together along with a flood of negative emotion that clawed and scraped at the insides of his skull.

"Wh-What is th-this!?" He groaned painfully. It hurt to think or try to speak. He was usually able to guard himself from the high amounts emotions that crowded the academy but this onslaught was unlike anything he had experienced before. He clumsily approached his desk and fell to his knees, he let go of his head and scratched at the desk with his claws. He wanted to escape but he could no longer move. The horrifying siren continued to screech in his head. He huffed and tried his hardest to remain calm; whatever this was, surely no student in SAIA could create something like this...

After what felt like days, the screeching within his head slowly faded to barely a slight whisper and the Professor could think again. The wolf gasped and looked around in a small panic with bloodshot eyes and wettened cheeks. He coughed and rubbed his head, slowly rising himself to his feet, gasping depereately for his breath.

He leaned on his desk, "There's only one thing that could have caused an emotional bomb like that..." His yellow eyes darted around the room and he found what he was looking for. A single glass jar sat still and upright at the corner of his desk. It wasn't shattered but a hole dominated it's side, the hole wasn't broken but appeared as if it had been melted through. The Professor held it carefully and looked inside it, no matter how he looked at it, his experiment had escaped and he was quick to assume that it was the cause of his wrecked office.

"This glass jar was enchanted by one of the most powerful sorcerers I know, how did the 'Wraith Project' manage to escape!?" The Professor looked around his office, examining the damage. It occurred to him that his experiment could be anywhere by the time he discovered his destroyed office but what he feared the most is that the Wraith was still in the headmistress, Fa'lina's, domain; the experiment was still in SAIA! "...Shit..." The wolf snarled and slapped his face before he headed off to find Fa'Lina.

....

"...So yeah, make sure it's the medium model, I can't live with a music player smaller than that." Desho spoke calmly with a slight of excitement to a Gryphon.

The four legged beast was the about the size of a large horse with powerful wings, it had bright red feathers and a strong brown beak, it piercing yellow eyes rivaled that of a hawk. It watched with a kind of 'birdie' glee and a grin, "Chii!" It squawked happily.

"Awesome," Desho smiled and he reached to his pocket, he pulled out a small brown leather bag and handed it the gryphon, "Here's the first half of your pay. I guess I'll see you later with my delivery?"

The gryphon bit the leather bag, holding it in its beak and placed it in one of it's many pockets and rucksacks, "Chii!!" The gryphon chirped and waved to Desho before turning away. With a running start, it leaped into the air and flew off into the distance.

Afterwards, Desho stepped off to the Garden of Trees that bloomed at the entrance of the Academy. Autumn was near and the trees that lined the stone pathway were blooming, looking like pink clouds. Each individual pink leaf dropped quietly and flew away with the passing breeze. Cubi students marveled at its beauty as they passed their time around the Hero's Statue at the head of stone pathway in front of the Academy. The setting sun eclipsed the ambient setting of the coming night and the orange sky befitted the scenery like an award-winning painting.

Faye watched the trees with a smile as she sat at the foot of the statue like she always did. Her golden hair was smooth and practically seemed to glow and her white fur was neatly cleaned. Her wings were currently not visible, a small practice that she, Rath, and Desho have decided to begin with, also as a part of practice for their transformation class. She wasn't just there to watch the trees however and show off her finely groomed self, she was waiting.

"Faye..." Desho approached her with a calm smile. His black hair was beginning to show white tips, matching the white tips of his four wings as further growth of his Cubi traits. His blue eyes with their slightly visible clan markings smiled on their own at the white cat smiling back at them. "How are you feeling?" He asked.

Faye closed her eyes and she blushed a bit, "Nervous and shy yet happy; the usual when I'm with you." She giggled softly and held her paws together while looking up at him sweetly.

"How about I add something else?" Desho quipped with smirk.

Faye blushed even deeper as she watched with curiosity as the black cat reached behind himself, like he was performing some magic trick. He pulled out his black headphones and music player. He held them in front of her in paws, "I have a gift for you, I want you to have these."

Faye's eyes got wide while she looked at him, "Are you sure? Aren't these expensive?"

Dehso grinned and tilted his head, "It's alright, I just want you to have these, I think you'll like them."

Faye smiled and she carefully took them, she held them in her paws and eyed them mysteriously. Desho had shown her how to use and let her listen to it before. It was a pleasant coincidence that she and Desho had the same taste in music. She held them close to herself with a shy grin, "Thank you Desho."

Desho held out his paw for her, "Are you ready to go Faye?"

The white cat looked up to him and smiled sweetly, "Hehee...Yeah, I am." She reached up to him. Her hand slightly shook as their paws slowly made contact.

Desho chuckled, "You're so cute when you're shy." He softly spoke while he held her soft paw in his.

Faye blushed as deep as she could possibly go. She slowly stood up with his aid and they stood together, holding hands, "It's funny you say that, I remember saying you were shy when we first spoke." She smiled and held the headphones in her open hand.

Desho nodded, "I guess we both have our days..." He turned to the blooming trees and motioned for her to follow, "Didn't you have someplace you wanted to show me?" He asked.

Faye nodded and walked at his side, holding his hand like an anchor, "Yes, I do. It's a small lake I like to go to when I'm alone." She tilted her head, "Of course, I'm not alone now but still...I was pleasantly shocked when you said that you wanted to spend time with me alone."

"Don't you mean, 'I asked you out on a date'?" Desho said with a smirk.

Faye giggled again; it was even cuter to Desho than ever before. "W-Well yeah but...I-It's doesn't seem too different from usual, we're always together with Rath."

"Well Rath's busy tonight," Desho said, even though he didn't know what Rath was really up to, he hadn't seen him all day, "...Maybe tonight...something special will happen."

The shy white cat smiled quietly and she held the black cat's paw gently. She walked close to him, leading him in the right direction, her heart was fluttering and she couldn't help but keep a smile on her face. Her blue eyes felt a little watery and her mind was soaring to new heights, she was happy, not excited or amused but, happy...

"Yeah, maybe something will happen, something special..."

...It was a short distance to Faye's lake but it was surprisingly isolated from the rest of the academy. When the pair arrived, the sun had set and the sky was enveloped in shades of purple and blue and the first stars were showing. They were greeted with a large lake. The surface was as smooth as glass and reflected the sky like a mirror. The moon was already shining brightly and with the lake it looked like a parallel dimension with same beautiful evening. The distant trees were dark, their leaves sparkling like the stars above. It looked like an endless expanse of water that merged with the starry sky and two moons reflecting each other.

"Wow...I've never seen a lake like this before." Desho watched, his wide eyes looking at the lake as the water reflected a light show on his fuzzy cheeks. He smiled at Faye and held her tightly while he stepped to the water's edge.

Faye giggled, "I love it here, it's so quiet and peaceful unlike the Academy. I can think freely here and just...have a moment to myself."

Desho looked around for a perfect path of grass and his eyes landed on a white feather. A pure white feather about six inches long. "Hey look what I found." He cheerfully picked it up and held it in front of Faye.

"Hmm...Oh!" Faye's eyes sparkled and she smiled, "I've never seen a feather like this before," She carefully snatched it from Desho, "I'm gonna keep this."

Desho sat down with crossed legs, "You like feathers?"

"Yes, I collect feathers." Faye answered happily, "I don't have that big of a collection but I just started." She sat beside him and she put the feather in her hair.

"Nice...I'd like to see it sometime." Desho muttered. The two sat beside each other and watched the lake quietly. Crickets chirped in the distance and the occasional hoot of an owl could be heard. The moon shone it's blue light over the landscape and second by second, more stars appeared, forming constellations and galactic patterns in the distant sky. They both watched the reflecting landscape without looking at each other

"...Desho?" Faye asked quietly.

"What is it?"

"Can I...ask a personal question?" She cleared her throat.

"...Go for it."

She muttered quietly and grumbled, "Do you..." She was hesitant and spoke with uncertainty, "Do you think that we...would make good parents?"

Desho felt like someone just kicked the inside of his skull, "Wh-What!?" His face burned and he looked over to Faye with face of embarrassed shock. "What does she mean by that!? Is she just joking?"

Faye was staring back with concerned eyes, "I don't mean it like that...It's just..." She looked away at the reflecting water and frowned, "I don't remember anything about my parents and well...When I'm with you, I find myself thinking about these things..."

Desho frowned yet his blush was even deeper, "Y-You do, huh?" He looked forward to the lake and held his knees to his chest, "...What about Fa'lina? Can't she help you remember?"

"Well...I don't want to remember my past...I'm afraid of it." Faye glanced at Desho, "...What about your parents? What were they like...?"

Desho's body froze and he rested his chin on his knees, "...You mean before they died?" He shut his eyes huffed, "I don't remember."

Faye turned to him and tilted her head, she softly asked, "....How did they die?"

The black cat was breathless and his grip tightened on his knees. He could feel his heart wrench up and a knot rise to his throat. Desho looked up to the starry sky and sighed, "...They were murdered by an adventurer."

Faye sighed and shook her head, "I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize..." Desho grunted, "In the eyes of a 'normal' being, a Succubus and Incubus together in one place surely means they are plotting something horrifying. So why not slaughter them without giving them a chance to explain?"

"Don't say that..." Faye reached over and rubbed his shoulder. Desho didn't move. The white cat leaned back and held her paws together, "I guess we're the same...We have pasts that we'd rather not talk about." She sniffed before she covered her face, she spoke weakly, "We have no one but each other, right? I just wish I was better for you all."

Desho looked at her with worry, "What do you mean? You get better grades than me and Rath and you're pretty....And you're very important to me."

Faye looked up to the sky and her eyes were watery, "I just...I never tell you all how often I think about my past...I feel like I'm in a dream and I just...." She shut her eyes and shook her head, "I-I'm afraid that, whether or not I learn my past, I'm just going to cause sorrow for everyone..."

"Faye..." Desho leaned towards her and he grabbed her paw. When she looked up to him with a slight gasp, he reached for her face and wiped away a tear from her cheek, "Please don't cry...You don't cause people to be sad...There is so much sorrow in this world but you're the happiest person I've ever known."

Faye blushed and wiped her eyes, "I-I...I thought you liked sorrow...I mean no offense but isn't your emotional affinity s-sorrow?"

Desho grinned, "Silly Faye, I'd change everything about myself just to see you smile."

"I..." Faye huffed and giggled and rubbed her cheek, she felt she was going to cry again but for a happy reason. She sniffed and suddenly hugged Desho, "Please don't change...I love you the way you are now..." She muttered with her face in his chest.

Desho blushed but he remained calm while she hugged him around his chest. "Love....did she really mean that? Did it just slip out?" He held her in his arms and patted her head, "It's always as you say...Never lose hope..." He muttered softly into her left ear. "Why am I even worrying about it...I don't know if I can bring myself to say it back..."

Faye looked up to him and stared into Desho's clan marked eyes. "Desho..." Faye blushed as deep as possible as the black cat gazed sweetly down at her. They watched each other silently, Faye wanted to bring herself closer but she still hesitated. Desho smiled softly and rubbed her warm and fuzzy cheek again. His heart was pounding and there was a slight shake, he did his best to keep himself cool and collected while his finger inched to her chin. He rubbed her lips gently and he raised her to himself.

Their noses touched while their lips softly pressed together. Both of their eyes were closed and they held each other lovingly as they silently shared their first kiss beside the moonlit lake.

During what should have been their passionate moment, a cold breeze blew at Desho's back and a quiet hiss and screeching began to rise in their minds...

...

...In the headmistress' office, the Professor firmly pressed his paws at Fa'Lina's table. "Are there still no traces of the Wraith, Headmistress?" He asked desperately.

Fa'lina stood beside the large window in her office with her eyes closed and arms crossed, "...No...Your experiment is hiding well, I can't sense it anywhere other than that it somewhere in SAIA." The white poodle wearing a purple dress and pink hair turned around to face the grim wolf.

"Damn...Of all the things that could have gone wrong..." He huffed and cleared his throat.

"Tell me a little more about it, it may help." Fa'lina requested.

The Professor sighed, "Well, the basics of the Wraith is that it's basically an imagery based on the negative strands of emotions as well as a few positive strands. A floating cloth of all the emotions that have ever been experienced in this domain...This experiment, it builds a type of strength from these emotion that, if they were all used in a kind of single blast, it could shatter the mind of any living being. However, I didn't create it to become weapon, as devastating a weapon it could be, this was supposed to help further my research to unimaginable levels and solve mysteries of the mind. From finding the answers in locked dreams to even recovering lost memories."

Fa'lina nodded, "I see...I allowed this knowing how dangerous it could be, just for the sake of recovering Faye's memories..."

"All that risk for that girl..." The wolf huffed and growled, "The Wraith shouldn't have been able to break out of it's casing however, I didn't 'program' any type of hostile abilities into it so shouldn't have been any threat. Yet, I fear that in the short time it has broken out of its little glass cage, it may have become even more dangerous."

Fa'line rubbed her chin and leaned back onto her table, "Hmm...Are you sure there wasn't any kind of mistake? A stray element?"

"A stray element you say?" The Professor paced around the office hurriedly while he pondered. After a whole minute had passed, he stopped and his ears and wings perked up, "I recall that Faye's boyfriend had dropped his head phones in my lab," He turned to Fa'lina and clapped his paws together, "One of Desho's furs may have fallen into the jar. I think part of Desho has caused the Wraith to develop an unexpected attitude..."

"Desho...he's always with Faye and I honestly believe that's for the better, they're practically inseparable," The poodle huffed and eyed the wolf, "...Are you saying those two are being targeted?"

"Well, if the Wraith developed a murderous intent from the stray hair of Desho's..." The Professor closed his eyes and shook his head disapprovingly, "...You're the only one who knows Desho's full past so I won't make any accusations...But yes, I believe the Wraith is going after them with hostile intent."

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a harsh wave of negative emotions blasted through the office. Fa'lina's heart froze and she gasped. She turned around to look out the window, the Professor rushed to her side. In the distant forest, there was nothing that appeared strange, then with a bright flash, a large explosion erupted from the forest and a loud *bang* with shots of flame whistling into the sky followed, it sounded like fireworks.

"There's our Wraith..." The Professor muttered grimly.

Author's Comments:

This is a fan fiction of a wonderful webcomic known as Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures aka DMFA. It was created by Amber Panyko aka MissMab. The settings of SAIA, Furrea and the Cubi concept in general were all created by her. [www.missmab.com]

The only Orginal characters in this story are the main characters, Desho, Faye, and Rath.

This chapter actually had a few difficult spots where I had change my original plans, something happened in this that I didn't expect to happen until later but it ended coming out here and it felt right to me so I went with it. This is also kicking off the main story and not just building up for it so I hope this goes smoothly.

I hope you like it, Critique Appreciated....
