#1 of Star Fox, Leon's Legacy

During the events of Star Fox: Assault our story begins with the aparoid invasion of Corneria. Star Fox is © Nintendo.

Over the sea of clouds, a whirling sound of engines and wind, a fleet of Cornerian battle ships flew in a desperate alignment toward the Cornerian city. A smaller ship, much resembling an Arwing, flew alongside them.

"This is the Cornerian squadron 8. We're coming in to assist you," the large fleet ship announced over radar.

"Corneria base to squadron 8, we'll need any help you can give us," the radar replied, sending it over the com-link.

"Affirmative, we'll be arriving at the base in less than 5 minutes; can you hold them off until then?"

"We can try, the frontlines are being held off by our city defenses- but I don't know how much longer we can stand."

"Alright then, squadron 8 cha- AAGGGHH!!" the link was broken off by a large explosion on the Cornerian fleet ship.

"What the-?!" a soldier gasped, jetting his fighter to the front. Another small beam came firing out of the clouds and he was shot down.

"Commander Grey, we're under attack!" a soldier pleaded over the com-link to the last remaining fleet ship.

"Understood; left wing, flank the clouds and spot our enemy!" the ship let out, a commander in his fighting suit slamming his hand against the arm rest. With the order a small squad of 6 fighters turned on the wind, catching a drift up over the blinding clouds.

"Sir- we're outnum- AGGHHH" one of soldiers replied in a shocked voice. There was a loud booming noise as the six fighters started they're conflagrating plummet into the ocean bellow.

Piercing through the on coming clouds with an ominous air, a large aparoid infected Cornerian ship flew straight toward the fleet, a volley of flying aparoids behind them.

"Commander Grey!!"

"Don't panic! Spread out and take down their wings and push them back! We must get to the Cornerian base!" Bill shouted through the com. "You!" he shouted to one of the engineers manning the navigation system.

"Y-yes commander?" the soldier asked with a sense of fright in his tone.

"I want you to send a message to the hanger- I'm not goin' to let these aparoid scum-bags take over my fleet! Ready my fighter!" Bill demanded, getting up off his seat.

"Sir yes sir!"

"Hey, newbie" Bill called out the com to the Arwing-like ship.

"Yeah?" the calmed fox said in his ship, his leg resting over his knee.

"It's time for y'all to show us why you're 'sposed to be the top-ranked in your class. You're coming with me to take out that ship" Bill responded.

The fox known as Leon let out a sigh, "Meh... Don' really wanna... But I guess I can't really oppose you now can I Bill?" he said with a slight mocking tone. Then he readied himself, grabbing the ignition thrusters. "Don't take too long!" he shouted as he pushed forward on the rod-like thrusters, the ship's engines realigning themselves and bursting forward with a jet of hot air. The wind skimming it's eagle-spread wings with a small white trail of clouds being torn.

Bill let out a sigh, "Ain't cha just like Fox huh?" he said with a grin, "As long as we got that- we can't lose..."

The aparoid ship's turrets, posted on the tops of the wings, began aiming at the incoming fleets of Cornerian fighters. Letting out a rattling noise they began to fire as the aparoid fighters jetted forward to meet the oncoming enemy.

Destroy... Inferior... Beings...One of the aparoid ships radioed out as it aimed two large cannon shafts at the Cornerian fighters.

"Not if I can help it!" Leon shouted, bursting through the near-by clouds in a spiral, blasting at different points at the ship. With just one hit to the cockpit the fighter was destroyed and the Cornerians flew right through the rubble of their enemy.

"Thanks!"

"No prob" Leon responded, taking a u-turn and cutting across the field of clouds to the opposing wing. After a few minutes of hopeless fighting the ships came to an open field of clouds, explosions tearing the once serene sky.

"Commander! It's hopeless, they just don't seem to end!" one of the soldiers pleaded over the com.

"Don't give up! Fleet ship, open the titan cannons!" Bill commanded, taking a u-turn from his position from the frontlines, taking out a few aparoid fighters on his way. The Cornerian fleet ship opened a large hatch, letting two small cannon shafts pointing out toward the enemy ship. "FIRE!!!"

Leon's ship, with a distinctive marking of a flaming title "Flame thorn" turned in place, heading away from the aparoids with a bursting jet. With shocking intensity the Cornerian fleet ship fired out two large burning lines in direction of the enemy. Before anyone could even blink, a large flash of light broke out of the sky and the aparoid ship broke in two, the rubble falling down like flaming rain into the ocean of clouds, the other aparoid fighters turning tail and scattering in a chaotic brouhaha of fire and explosions.

"Commander Grey, we've taken a few casualties- but other than that we are still effective in combat." One of the engineers called over the com.

"Good, but for now I'll be taking the bulldog and husky squadron with me to go on ahead, I want Leon to come with me as well..." Bill responded as his flagship turned up ahead of the fleet ship, two other groups of fighters winging on him and following in a V formation.

"You know, sometimes I really dislike you Bill..." Leon complained over the com, taking the draft behind Bill's flagship.

"Heh heh, good to know. It puts a little more spark to the fight..." Bill responded with a grin. Leon just let out a sigh and rolled his eyes, closing off the com-link.

Well... It looks like we'll be heading to fight the whole invasion force of the aparoids... Leon thought to himself, looking up at the brilliant rings of the moon with the crisp sun still baking light unto it. Sometimes... I really wish I could just be Fox... I mean... He's the best... While I'm just some trainee fresh out of the academy...he sighed, looking up once more with dull eyes. Then, a small twinkle caught his eye.

"Huh?" he mumbled, squinting to see the silhouette's true identity. A squad of 3 specially made fighters bearing a symbol of a flying fox on their sides. With a gasp Leon stared wide eyed at them. "It... can't be!"

"Hmm? What is it Leon?" Bill asked over the com-link, "Y'all alright back there?"

"I'm going ahead Bill! I'll meet you at the Cornerian base!" Leon called, drifting over the V formation of fighters and putting his boosters on full power- pumping ahead of the others with a burst of fire.

"Leon wait! LEON!!!" Bill yelled out, yet it was already too late. Leon had already shut off his com link and began flying in a serpentine order through the clouds, bursting through an aparoid ship by spinning his fighter like a drill through it. Leon had always aspired to join the Star fox team, and would do anything to prove he was worthy of joining them. With their arrival he would finally be able to show his skills off for them.

With one last burst of speed Leon's fighter came bursting into the air space around the Cornerian base. Numerous buildings were on fire and countless numbers of fighters, friend or foe, were being shot down around him.

"Is this squadron 8?!" one of the soldiers from the base called to him over an open com link.

"No, squadron 8 is on their way. This is Leon Claus coming to your aid! I'll make sure these aparoid scums leave this place in so many broken pieces, it'd take a black hole to get rid of them all!" Leon rested his arms on the thrust and pushed forward, turning it to the right and spinning through a cloud of enemy fire.

"What why did they send us some little kid?!" Leon tore off the communication's helm and threw it down on his seat.

"I'll show you!" Leon shouted, spinning around through two buildings and opening fire on the aparoid flagships. The shots quickly bounced off and Leon pulled the rods back, shifting the thrusters so that he turned back upside down to avoid retaliation fire. With a spin he looked up to see a swarm of aparoid fighters directly over him. "AAAHHHH!!!"

In the blink of an eye, before Leon could react, a few shots came out from the clouds above- shooting down the aparoid ships.

"Can't let these damn bugs do what they will" a voice called so loud Leon could hear it from his un-equipped com set. "Hey! Buddy you alright?"

Leon quickly put on the head set and flipped his ship back into a proper position. "Y-yeah! I think I'll be fine! Thanks... Uhh..." Leon stuttered, staring at the person's shimmering Arwing.

"The name's Falco kid and I think you should pay attention to your enemies" he called, flipping behind Leon's fighter and shooting off a missile tracking him. "Get your head in the game!"

"O-Oh!! Right! Sorry sir!" Leon stuttered, shaking his head clear of distraction.

"Eh... Don't be callin' me sir... I'm not that old yet!" Falco chuckled, taking a u-turn and meeting up with the other 2 Arwings descending on the city.

Leon turned, as he was already a bit off from the city air space, and began shooting at a pestering aparoid fighter. Grr... Don't get so distracted! You have to look like you can handle this!! Leon reminded himself, taking down the aparoid and flying into the city air-space.

After what seemed like an eternity of fighting the com link started back up. "LEON!! Where are you!?" Bill's voice thundered over the com. Leon was currently spinning around to avoid fire from an enemy behind him. With a small push, Leon flipped underneath the enemy fighter and aimed the tip of his own ship at it. With a thrust, Leon drilled through the enemy and regained an equilibrium to respond to Bill.

"I'm already assisting the defense of the base!" Leon called, "Does this mean the radio's back up? Fox did it!!"

"Fox?! Fox is here?!" Bill asked in a surprised tone.

Before Leon could answer he heard a loud booming sound as a tower of smoke rose up from the roof of near-by building. Fox was standing in the center, surrounded by heavily armed aparoids, and no hope of survival. Leon gasped and spun around the side of a building as an enemy launched a volley of missiles at him. When he came around the side of the building he saw bursts of lazer shots destroying the aparoids and Fox jumped off the side of the building, landing on an unknown red and white fighter.

"Leon, what's going on?!" Bill shouted.

"Nothing, it just looks like we got some extra hands to assist us!" Leon grinned, looking at the other two similar fighters spreading through the city and taking out numerous aparoids in a single jet.

"This is Leon Claus of squadron 8, who are you?" Leon asked over the com-line.

"Wolf O'Donnell leader of Star Wolf , and I suggest you watch your tongue boy... Else I'll tear it out myself..." Wolf responded in a howl, taking turn into the city.

Leon took this as a hint to stay quiet. After a minute or so an no arrival of squadron 8, Leon began to worry. "Bill, Bill are you there?"

"Ch... L... Leon... We...Nder... Att...ck..." the response faded in and out. Then a shocking revelation was heard over the com line.

"Is that the general's flag ship?" Peppy called out through the line to the team, Leon was tapping into a proxy frequency to catch all of the radio waves in the area. As Leon looked over to the ocean he saw an aparoid infected ship coming up toward the city at a high speed.

Leon noticed it right away as General Pepper's flag ship. "What the-?!" After a few moments, the ship transformed into a human shaped android, beginning to make an assault on the red and white Wolfen, Fox shooting at it from the wing.

His Arwing flipped around and began to chase down the aparoid and Wolf, yet he was constantly intercepted with aparoids. With growing rage Leon began to drill through the enemy ranks just to keep the hunt on speed. Before Leon could reach them he was caught off by an electrical shot from an aparoid sharp shooter and his fighter began to descend, his right wing torn. "May-day! May-day!" Leon shouted, beginning to spiral down toward the city road.

"Oh no!" Krystal gasped; breaking away from the enemy she was chasing and started flying in his direction. "Get out! Jettison!" Krystal shouted, flying to his left. Leon was growling heavily as he couldn't reach the jettison lock. "NOW!"

Leon growled and slammed his fist down on the button- shooting off the cockpit as a parachute expanded behind him. Yet, thanks to the fire, part of the parachute had caught on fire. Quickly picking up speed, Krystal lodged the sole cockpit onto her Arwing and began to descend to the city floor. The Flaming thorn (oh how it's name suits it) continued its spiraling inferno into a Cornerian building- exploding as the engines impacted on the solid wall.

"Are you alright?" Krystal asked, opening her cockpit to examine the young boy.

"Erm... Ugh..." he grumbled, holding his stomach, the constant spinning and turbulence of the crash had made him very nauseous. Before he could answer he opened the cockpit and rolled out in a hurry, falling 10 feet onto the hard pavement and puked on the ground bellow him- panting heavily.

"Are you okay!?" she shouted, jumping down from the Arwing and holding up his head, placing a hand on his forehead. She yelped, "Chiss... He's burning up!"

"Krystal, what's wrong?" Peppy called over intercom, obviously distressed.

"I've got an injured pilot here... I think his arm is broken, and he's got a fever!" she explained over the com link.

"I see... Can you carry them to a safe location?"

"There's no place safe around here Peppy. Can we bring him to the med corp?" Krystal asked, taking off Leon's flame proof jacket and his helmet, revealing a young fox with a piercing on his right ear, and wily orange hair with bangs that slightly fell over his eyes.

"I'm afraid not... The medical unit was evacuated after the first attack. You'll need to bring him aboard the Great Fox..." Peppy responded. "If you can fly him up here then I can get him in our medical chambers with R.O.B."

At this moment, Panther had landed just a few yards away. "Milady, allow Panther to take him for you."

Krystal looked up with an awkward look on her face. "Sorry Panther... I'll bring him myself... can I have some help loading him in the Arwing?" she asked, picking up the boy in a marriage hold.

"Of course..." he purred with a bow. In a few minutes, Panther had loaded him into the cockpit on Krystal's lap.

"Thank you Panther" she said with a smile, adjusting her seat to reach the thrusters and control panel.

"It is not a problem milady..." he said with a slight hiss, envying the unconscious boy's position. Then he daintily hoped down from her Arwing and watched as they began to ascend into the atmosphere.

"Uhnn..." Leon mumbled, rubbing his forehead and leaning up. He was in a empty room, less a few beds and medical supplies on a table, carved into a pillar in the center of the room, a large transparent screen showing the planet of Corneria out in space. "Where... Am I..?" he mumbled, looking around. Then, with a changing air pressure sound, the hatch door opened and Krystal walked in with R.O.B. following.

"I see you're awake" she said with a smile, sitting down in a chair next to the bed. "That's good..."

"Physical condition rising. Fever lowered by 40%. Blood flow increased by 13%. Nutrition and energy storage increased by 29.8%" R.O.B. analyzed, scanning Leon's bandaged and bruised body with a red scanning beam.

"Uhnn... Wait... What happened?" he asked, rubbing his bandaged head.

"You were shot down... The medical corps were no where in sight... We had to take you up to the Great Fox..." Krystal explained, looking at him concerned.

"W...Wait... I'm- I'm in THE GREAT FOX?!" he shouted, jolting up and looking at her wide eyed. "Th-th-that means your K-Krystal!?"

She giggled, holding a gloved paw to her mouth, "I do suppose that would be me, yes..."

Leon was overwhelmed, taking in the childhood fantasies of being on the Great Fox with Fox McCloud and Falco Lambardi. "Ahh... Wait... What happened to General Pepper?..."

"Peppy flew in at the last second and managed to save him... Although they both took serious injuries from the crash..." Krystal explained, her vulpine ears lowering.

Leon's own ears mimicking the blue vixen's, "Oh..."

"Heh... Luckily Peppy should be up and ready to go in a few days... To tell the truth I was coming to take you back to the medical corps..."

Leon gasped, "W-Wait! M-m-may I talk to Fox first?! I've always wanted to be a part of Star Fox! And I'm sure that the Cornerian army wouldn't let someone who disobeyed orders to come back with open arms..." he said, looking down.

"Well... I'm not sure what Fox will say. He's not too caring for more team members..." Krystal said, getting up and walking over to a closet in the wall, pulling out Leon's clothing. "Here... Put these on... I'll bring you with me to go back to the medical corps... Then you can talk to Fox..."

Leon nodded, understanding that she couldn't leave him alone on the Great Fox. "Al-Alright..." he said, so nervous about Fox's reaction that his stomach began to turn. This is it... If I can prove to Fox that I'm good enough for the team my dreams will come true!
