#6 of The King's Company: A DnD Style Story

Hey guys! Little bit of a longer chapter, also our first one where perspective switches to the same character twice. Was planning on going until the end of this arc, but ended up feeling like it'd be better to split it to two chapters. As usual, hope you guys enjoy! If you'd like a feature in this series, whether as a side character, such as Titan, (thank you again SulfurLoyd for being this series' first feature!), a possibly important character, or even just an "encounter" for whichever of the characters you prefer! You can also ask for monsters as well, or "encounters" with monsters. Also always appreciate feedback on the things I write. Thanks for reading!

_ Val _

Val wasn't sure what he expected, honestly. An awful place filled with blood and those who would kill, steal, or take anything they wanted from those weaker? A place filled with loot and those who would kill, steal, or take - yeah he needed to stop thinking about that. His first thought was it was more... Organized, than he expected? They entered via the main hall, to see an impressively sized gathering, the majority of the criminal underground must have been here, but somehow, there wasn't any fighting going on that wasn't in the specific rings meant for that. However, there was an underlying sense of... Fear? Paranoia? Just unease? The wulf wasn't sure, but it was definitely strange. Suddenly, as they were walking, Rengar accepted a random challenge from one of the few people here who didn't seem bothered by much?? They were drawing so much attention... Val hissed at the ursari's back, "What are you doing?? You said -" feeling an arm on his shoulder pulling him away, he turned abruptly to see Tobi, who nodded to move away from the exchange. Following him to a different section of the room, a simple table by the bar, they leaned in close to whisper, Tobi speaking up, "It was too late at that point. I have no clue what he's planning, if anything, but at least enough people seem distracted, let's use this to search for the guildmaster's quarters." So they slipped away, to the the nearest door.

R _ engar _

This guy was slippery. As soon as the wulf on the side of the arena counted down, Rengar charged forward, attempting to take the gnoll by surprise, but he dodged out of the way. His opponent tried to kick him in the leg as he recovered, but the ursari was prepared for it, stepping back. Rengar went for another charge, but, as the hyena moved to the side again, he adjusted, raising one arm to clothesline him. Not at full power and speed because of the turn, but he definitely felt that one. He moved in to push his advantage, when suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his crotch. The dastard had pretended to be dazed, then kicked him in the balls! "Alright, Hotshot, if that's how you want to play it..." Rengar stalked forward, eyes on his prey. A haymaker that whizzed an inch from the gnoll's chin, Titan returning fire with an uppercut swiftly sidestepped, they skirmished, neither one able to gain a notable advantage against the other. Finally, Titan threw a punch a hair too slowly, and Rengar was able to get behind him, wrapping an arm around his chest, getting the other in position to set up a choke, but somehow the hyena looked up at him with a smile, speaking up, "Aw, so close!" and somehow slipped through the ursari's grasp. Were his words magical? Rengar growled, the familiar haze settling in, the joy of the fight filling him.

_ Tobi _

The two of them found themselves in a long corridor, with a few people walking through it. Tobi kept his head down, walking by, eyes moving carefully, searching for clues, watching for people who might stop them. Val whispered from next to him, "This seems to be a hallway for lodgings, I saw a bed in an open doorway, messy sheets, clearly lived in." strangely, the wulf seemed almost confused when he talked about the messy sheets? No matter. If this was a corridor with rooms, perhaps the master's space would be at the end of the corridor? Or maybe down a different hallway entirely. There wasn't exactly a map of the floor plan. Continuing to move, they discovered the end of the path. Wrong way, dangit. There had been a perpendicular hallway back a ways, there was the door in the main hall that he hadn't seen anyone go through, and anything that could spin off from those. After a moment of thought, hr decided to check off all the doors of the main room, just in case. Nodding to Val, who - thankfully - seemed to understand that his leading wouldn't be the best scenario in this case, retraced their steps. Through the main hall, to the door, which creaked slightly, but luckily anyone nearby was watching the fights going on. This space was much shorter, a small empty passageway with a door at the other end. Walking up and testing the handle, it was locked. Bingo? He leaned over, "Val, do you by chance have any experience with lockpicking?" when the wulf shook his head, he breathed a sigh of resignation. "Well, hope they think the guildmaster's home and dropped something. Time to take a risk, be ready for combat, just in case." Pulling out his orb, he tapped it to the handle, releasing a loud tonnggg that echoed in the empty hall. Swinging open the door, he let Val move in before following, shutting the door behind him.

_ Rengar _

Both of them were panting heavily, each tired, but neither willing to back down. They locked hands in almost a wrestler's hold, Rengar easily having the advantage. Pushing Titan one step back... Two steps back... Suddenly a slight twist and the gnoll was thrown to the side, hitting the ground hard, but still popping back up. Rengar growled, swirling his tongue across his teeth, "Not done yet, are ya, pup?" he charged forward, intending to finish the fight for good, before suddenly a loud clang, like that of a bell, sounded, echoing loudly in the chamber. Titan, standing back up, suddenly froze. The ursari threw a punch towards the unmoving figure, when suddenly, the hyena moved, parrying the punch with a simple sideways arm movement, those pink eyes staring straight through him. Wait... Weren't his eyes gold before? The scent of flowers, the pink eyes... Were his horns getting longer? The figure stood up straighter, his whole bearing changing almost. The person in front of him was the gnoll, Titan, but the posture, more elegant, the expression, lofty, almost annoyed... Rengar stepped back slightly, the hair on the back of his neck standing up. The figure... Titan, spoke. The same voice, but still different. A whisper, but loud enough he could hear it clearly. "Fear is a good reaction, I like that. It pains me to be straightforward, but I hope you and your compainions succeed. You should go to your conpanions, find the third book on the fourth shelf, they won't find it without you. If you succeed, I will contact you. Good luck." the gnoll raised his finger slowly to point towards the door Hao and Tobi went through, then sat down, cross legged. Rengar waited a moment, before deciding to trust the advice, and quickly turned, not running, but moving fast, even while the friend of Titan's, who was serving as announcer, called out that he lost the fight by running.

_ Val _

The quarters were empty, as expected. A couple rooms, decorated such that, even if they didn't know it was the guildmaster of the Thieves' Guild's room, it would be obvious. Gaudy decorations, tapestries, bookshelves. Did he just steal from his underlings, or what? It made sense at least. He and Tobi spent a few minutes looking over the room, not finding any sign of anything other than fancy lodging. Val turned to the vulpine, "I guess he isn't here. I think maybe we should try a stakeout, wait here until they appear?" Suddenly, Rengar burst through the door. Val glared at him as he moved right by, moving to... The bookshelves? "So what was that... Debacle earlier? You tell me to keep quiet, let you and Tobi deal with things, and start a fig-" with a long creak, the first bookshelf in line swung open, revealing a dark hallway. "...Well, I guess I can't argue with results. This must be where the leader disappears to. Let's go!" And into the blackness they went, hoping this whole thing would be over soon.
