Lost in the World

Part one: The Escape

Randel sat playing with his block, his tail swished and flicked happily about. A miracle of the world, the genetic splicing of fox DNA with human.

Chad sat on the chair across from Rande watching him play with his toys. The sight of seeing Randel play usually brought joy to the scientist face but today but today he was filled with only sadness, which Randel seemed to be able to pikc up.

"Is there something wrong, Dad?" Dad had been what Randel always called him and in some ways, Chad Redcliff was his dad. He was the lead scientist in the creation of Randel and had been a father-figure to the small cub. Usually when Randel called him dad it brought a smile to his face and happyness but today it didn't help.

"No, nothing's wrong." Chad lied. Something was wrong.

At first, when Randel was called "Subject 1" Chad only saw Randel as a specimen, something to examine under a microscope but, as Randel grew, so did Chad's love for him. He changed his name to Randel, a name Randel had picked up from one of his books, he loves to read. Randel was the closest thing to a son that Chad has had in awhile, after losing his own wife and daughter to a car crash some years back.

The voices of todays meeting still echoed in his mind.

"That 'thing' is an abomination." said one

"The board has reached its decision. Subject 1 is to be terminated, if word gets out of what we've done we'll be ruined" Thinking these thoughts brought tears to Chad's eyes and he had to turn so Randel won't see.

Randel was only 9, still a child and the company wants to have him destroyed, like a piece of paper or a bad test results.

"They can't do this!" Chad had shouted when he got back to his lab. Soon "They can't do this!" Turned into "They won't do this." as Chad came up with a plan.

"So, Randel, want to go on a trip?" Randels ear's perked up, making Chad laugh, Randel was more fox then human, he was all fox, besides the fact that he can stand on two legs, use things, and speak.

Randel wore his usual white shirt and short's, the shorts modified to let his tail swish around feely. He continued to stare at Chad with his blue eyes and Chad's heart seemed to twist into knots.

"We're going on a walk outside the facility." Chad hoped Randel would believe his lie. Randel looked at him curiously.

"You told me that I wasen't allowed outside because I would get in trouble and get hurt."

"I know but we won't be coming back here... so we won't get in trouble." Chad prayed that Randle would believe his lie. They had to move or the soldiers will be knocking on their door any second. It seems someone must of been listening because Randel only shook his head in agreement.

"Okay, pack your stuff, get everything that you need, clothes, food and some toys if you want but please hurry." Randel nodded and quickly gathered his things. As he did this, Chad checked his lab coat pockets to make sure he had the vaccine with him. Due to the cloning process, some of randels cells continue to multiply, a kind of cancer that Randle has. The vaccine, known as "V-1", stops this process but it must be injected every now and then when Randel becomes ill. Chad had already checked a dozen or so times but he did once more, he brought 6 vials of it and made sure they where all secured so they wouldn't break.

Randel also had a backpack that had several vials in it as well, just in case. Chad knew that without it, Randel was dead, so he always made sure he had a few around.

"You ready?" Dad asked, Randel smiled and quickly gathered the last of this things, several books, some candy bars, his backpack, and his MP3 player. As his dad fiddled with something in his pocket, Randel took one last long around. The room he had called "His room" was small but ever since Randel had been alive, he enjoyed the room. Wall's covered in paw and hand prints, a result of him and his dad trying to paint the white walls and ending up playing around. The T.V., Randel's favorite thing, was almost always on with an old western playing, a small bed, a toy chest and the closet made up the rest of the room..

"Okay, time to go." Dad's voice broke Randel out of his daze. Randel turned to see his dad pushing his bed to the side. Underneath was a small door, like a storm shelter that Randel has seen in movies were a twister was coming and the people hid in it. His dad pressed a few buttons, and cursed when he had to push some more. Soon, there was a click and dad lifted a handle and the trap door opened.

Chad had pushed the heavy bed to the side and began punching in the access codes for the panic room that was built under Randel's room, in case the 'test subject' went insane or something. He tried his old access codes that the was given but he was blocked out,

"Shit!" The company must of considered his plot to free Randel and blocked him out of the system. Luckily, Chad has been around the facility and knew a guard that, after a few beers, told himt he master code for the panic room. 124350D7 Finally, the hatch unlocked with a click and he pulled it open.

"Randel hop down in here." Randel starred down the ladder that lead to the panic room.

"It's kinda dark." Randel shivered slightly, Chad knew he was afraid of the dark.

"It'll be okay, I'll be down with you in a second." This was enough for Randel to get the courage to climb down the ladder, backpack slung over his shoulder. When Randel was on the last rung, Chad heard someone coming towards the room. Thinking quickly, he closed the hatch, praying that Randel will forgive him for leaving him in the dark. The footsteps were getting louder and Chad just had enough time to move the bed back over when the lab door opened up.

Randel hated the dark, even with his fox eyes quickly adjusting to the light, he was scared.

"Dad?" He whispered, hoping this was just a game, a not-so-funny joke. Then Randel heard someone talking, he didn't recognize the first voice but the next one was his dad. His voice was muffled and Randel couldn't hear anything. The muffled voices were growing louder and Randel could tell that someone was screaming. After abit of screaming, Randel heard a loud clanging noise, followed by a thud. Randel's eyes widened as he recognized them as gun shots.

The lab door opened up and in stepped Jason Frost, Jason was the head of security, hard as nails and in some cases, a tad insane. With him where two soldiers, each with automatic weapons.

"Hello, Chad. I find it sad that I'm not surprised you're here and the little runt isn't." Jason's voice was low, his blonde hair in a crew cut and his favorite pair of dark sunglasses decorated his face.

" Jason! You don't know what you're doing! This is wrong." Chad had though of keeping his voice down but couldn't help it.

"Oh, I know what I'm doing. Just exterminating a pain in the companies side."

"You'll never kill Randel, you freak!" This brought a laugh from Jason.

"Ha! What makes you think they'd send me down to kill that freak!?" Chad was confused but got the idea as the soldiers pointed their weapons at HIM.

"Ready? Fire!" Jason shouted, The guns went off and Chad's last thought was "Randel... forgive me.

Randel was terrified, his eyes had quickly adjusted to the darkness and he could see that the room was bare except for a door on the opposite side. Randel wanted to stay and wait for his dad but the sound of those guns terrified him and he ran. The door opened up to a hallway, the hallway lead to another ladder, which lead into a very smelly area that Randel recognized as the sewer from books. The smell stung his nose but the pit in his heart seemed to grow, like a balloon with water. He continued to walk, the sludge felt weird on his feet, Randel didn't have time to put on his sandels.

Soon, he reached another ladder and Randel climbed up it the pit in his heart seemed to grow with each rung. Finally he reached a metal disk and with a heave he was able to push open the hatch. Randel noticed the smell of freash air and climbed up into an alley. It was night time and the stars shined down on him. Randel didn't know what to do. He sat down and wondered what was going to happen to him, what was he going to do now, and what happened to his dad. Finally, the balloon burst and Randel began to cry. His sobs, echoing in the filthy alley.
