The monk sighed as he made the rounds around the temple as usual, cleaning, praying, meditating, and tending to any guests... if there ever was any. It has been a good long while since anyone has visited the temple that doesn't actually work there. The Tanukidani-san Fudo-in temple in Ichijoji, Japan, is not particularly well known. When it comes to tourists virtually no one knows it exists in the first place and is a bit out of the way to visit even if you did. The locals still visited it often, and the temple does host ceremonies regularly... or it did. Recently a thug has been preying on visitors to the shrine, attacking at the base of the mountainside it is on. Because they strike at the base, no one from the shrine has seen them directly to give the police a positive ID on the culprit. So the thug is still at large, and the temple goes unvisited because its visitors keep getting intercepted.

The monk offers some berries to a plump tanuki who often visits, telling his woes to the critter to air his grievances. The monk wandered back into the temple and the tanuki furrowed her brows. What contemptable wretch would prey on the weak and elderly who come to the temple? As if the 250 step stairs were not already enough of a challenge to get into the temple. The tanuki wandered deeper into the forest from the edge of the temple where she would normally linger. The temple is made in worship of Fudo Myoo primarily- but it also worships the tanuki as guardians of the forest and bearers of good luck. This female tanuki would often sit among all the cartoonish statues of tanuki to see if the monk can spot her among the fakes. All of the statues are of male tanuki though- and she is notably missing the gargantuan scrotum.

Tanuki are essentially a type of wild dog- though at a glance you'd easily mistake them for a raccoon. Their face has a 'mask' that greatly resembles a raccoon, except rather than go across the bridge of their nose, it links across their chin and up their cheeks to their eyes- leaving the bridge of the nose their normal diffused brown fur. Their cheeks come to a very bushy point of fur, giving their head a very raccoon shape. With big round bodies and a bushy club-shaped tail, they are very friendly and form strong families. When stressed, they arch their back and bristle their fur like a cat does- but when happy; they roll over and present their big bellies in submission like a dog does. This particular tanuki is named Marumaru.

Maru-chan scurries deeper into the woods down a trail originally formed by humans but forgotten and now only walked by animals. She stops at a huge tree, marked with a shimenawa rope around its base- marking it as a sacred tree, warding evil spirits from it to protect the good spirit within. Maru-chan placed her paws on the base of the tree and looked up its immense trunk to the silver fox lazing in its branches.

"Haiiro? The temple is in need of help, I wanted to do something about it. Will you help too?"

The old fox only opened one eye to address her. Haiiro was once a beautiful streak of silver, flowing through the forest like liquid metal. Now he is elderly and rather scraggly. Humans had not visited his tree in ages, so he had no outside spiritual energy to feed him power. His tail is still bushy- at least he has that. He is missing his front right paw- the limb missing at the elbow joint from battles he already fought protecting this area. His left eye that he keeps shut for now is also milky looking and does not see well from having been cut in a near-fatal strike. His eye healed long ago, but his sight never fully returned to it. Silver fox have the exact same markings as a red fox does, because they are technically just a mutation of one- all the areas that are black on a red fox are also black on a silver fox. Instead of the vermillion fur however, a silver fox has a black undercoat and a pale grey overcoat- giving them a silver sheen. Their underbelly is black as well, but the very tip of the tail remains white like their counterparts.

"Humans forgot about me and my sacred tree, why would I help them? They have cut ties- far be it for me to stick my nose where it isn't welcome."

Haiiro sighed, closing his good eye again. "Maybe so, but acts of bitterness are done with a desire for suffering, and this is poised well for deliverance."

Marumaru growled. "Uuugh, you scraggly old grump! Fine! I will do it myself!"

Haiiro opened both his eyes a sliver to watch her plump form wobble back and forth as she scurried back the way she came. What does a tanuki plan to do? Haiiro doesn't much care what happens to the humans one way or the other- but he doesn't want a jolly tanuki getting hurt on account of his inaction. Following silently from a distance behind, the fox slithers down the tree and trails the tanuki woman. Marumaru enters the main building of the temple- it was built in front of a natural cave, and most of the building is on long wood pillars because only the back of the building is actually attached to solid ground. That is why there are so many steps to get to the temple- it's built on the sheer side of a mountain.

Normally Maru-chan would never enter a human structure, but she could not fight a violent human in her current state- she needed help from something. She found the monk who always feeds her scraps at the edge of the temple. The monks are all meditating right now, so they are entirely unaware of her even as she walks nearly close enough to brush up against them. The monk has blocked out most of his surroundings and even emptied himself of his own thoughts for the moment- which incidentally makes him extremely easy prey for possession magic. Being as big as a medium sized dog; Maru-chan isn't going to be winning any fights... but in a human body she can. She placed a leaf on the monk's head carefully as to not disturb his meditation, and then used the leaf to channel her forest magic through! From his open eyes black skin advanced and ran down his cheeks, painting stripes on either side. The bald head of the monk started to sprout hair rapidly, though oddly soft, mirroring Maru-chan's fur rather than human hair. His hairline advanced down on either side, creating large bushy sideburns, mirroring the bushy pointed cheeks of a tanuki! Tanuki have small round ears, so Maru's influence did not affect the shape of his ears at all, and simply turned them to black skin as well. His nails sharpened and compressed in at the sides, causing them to also become thicker- turning them into small claws. At the tip of every digit a bubble started to form as fat built up under the skin. The larger the pads swelled out the darker the surface skin became. Pads formed in the palm as well, but the pads at the base of all his fingers were close enough to be partially fused together- so technically there was only two pads in his palm; a long multi-bumped pad for his fingers and then a separate one at the base of his thumb.

The black coloration on his pads started to bleed out, looking like a shadow across his skin, then turning a bruised color before darkening completely to matte black as it swallowed his arms! The coloration advanced to his shoulders and then even the shoulder blades- nearly touching in the back but not quite. The same change took his feet, but the coloration ended at the top of his thighs- not affecting his rump at all. He giggled in Maru-chan's voice as he felt his tailbone start to stretch, and the meaty muscles coiling around it wiggle it. With every back and forth it made, it got longer. Fur started to grow out of it almost immediately and lengthened as the tail did. The tail of a tanuki looks very wide and large, but the skin and bone portion isn't that big at all; it's just extremely bushy.
