A cute cat has a cute crush. Psychics aren't very good at keeping secrets.

Break time. The best time of the day, one might argue. You always took your break at the same time every day, and usually at the same place - a coffee shop just down the street from the lab. They even knew your name, which you found very gratifying.

"Welcome back!" The golden retriever behind the counter greeted you, which instantly put a smile on your face. "Pastry or no pastry?"

Ah yes, the conundrum. Your usual order consisted of a hot tea and a sweetgrass pastry. Sometimes, you didn't get the pastry, but you weren't really sure when those times were. Every time you came in, you had to- adorable - think about-...

...that... was a strange intrusive thought. You blinked a few times, unsure where it could have come from, before remembering you being addressed.

"Uhh, yes pastry today." You decided, handing him your slightly crumpled bills and immediately sipping at your tea. The dog grabbed you one of the slightly larger pastries - sweet guy, him - and you turned around to take a seat by the front window.

A lynx quickly turned his head away from you. You recognized him as a regular, who seemed to take his break at the same time you did almost every day. You didn't think you'd ever spoken to him, but all the same he was someone you felt vaguely acquainted with. You took a seat one table down from him, so that you were facing each other.

As you took a bite of your pastry, you noticed he had looked up at you again, only to quickly dart his gaze away when you tried to meet it. Curious, and a little concerned, you kept your gaze on him, a trap that ensured his next look would be at your eyes.

When it came, you swore you saw him flinch a little, and you honestly felt a little guilty. You quickly set your tea down and gave him a smile and a wave.

He smiled nervously and returned your wave, blushing slightly and beginning... to purr. You smiled a little wider and he quickly dropped his gaze, though his purring grew louder.

Oh man, he was so cute. You giggled a little and went to sip your tea, trying not to - STOP PURRING YOU IDIOT - embarra-

You flicked your ear, eyes widening slightly. That... wasn't your thought. You looked back up at the lynx, and found him staring back at you, still quietly purring and quickly growing brighter and brighter red. You blinked at him, and when you opened your eyes, he had a third eye staring back at you.

Uhh-

OH GOD CALM DOWN HE CAN HEAR YOU, you thought loudly to yourself. No you didn't.

You blinked at him. He'd stopped purring, and his face looked like one of pure dread. Slowly, cautiously, you reached down to your tea and took another sip. Just play it cool. No need to embarrass the poor guy any further.

Especially considering he appeared to be some kind of, uhh, entity. You internally debated reporting this incident to your bosses at the lab, but couldn't imagine that ending well for anyone.

"Sorry." He said abruptly, stirring you from your thoughts.

"For what?" You asked, then immediately changed your mind. "Uhh, yeah, uhh, it's... it's okay." You said.

"I should, uhh, I should probably go-" He said, standing up and grabbing his coffee. You acted on instinct, pushing out the chair opposite you with a hoof.

"Uhh, wait, uhm- you wanna sit with me instead?" You asked gently.

He shuffled uncomfortably, then, after a pregnant pause, slid down into the seat across from you. He looked up at you nervously, and when he saw your smile, he started purring again.
