Dragged roughly from the cruiser, Kevin was marched into the Sheriff's office and bodily slammed down onto a hard chair. As he struggled to comprehend, or eve compose himself, one of the deputies with a snarl, savagely pulled Kevin's handcuffed hands forwards, affixing the chain between them to a snap hook on the desk.

Stomping in, the Sheriff's heavy cloven hooves pounding the linoleum floor, he paced back and forth, his massive hands clenching and unclenching - almost as if they desired to wrap themselves around Kevin's throat and squeeze. With a thunderous roar, the Sheriff turned and slammed both fists hard enough on the desk to make it groan in protestation.

"Why did you do it, Kevin? Why did you kill her? What did that sweet, innocent Otter girl do to you? Don't deny it - we have a witness who saw you tie her to your bed! You sick, depraved freak! Otters don't squeal like that in pleasure... I swear, you sick, twisted bastard! Where's her body? Well? Tell us where her body is and you_ might _ escape the death penalty!"

Kevin opened his mouth to protest, but the enraged Sheriff's glare silenced him.

"I hope you enjoyed it, you fucking bastard - I'm going to see you rot in the deepest, darkest cell... at the very least - now tell us, where is her body? At least give her the dignity of a funeral!"

"I didn't hurt her - I swear - " Kevin whimpered, tears sliding down his cheeks. "I loved her, and she loved me - with all my heart, I'd _never_ever, even think about harming her..."

"TELL ME NOW!" Roared the Bull, his ears sweeping back as his hooflets gouged four slashes backwards, his body quaking with suppressed rage. "You humans are all_the same! You lie, you cheat, you steal - and you kill in cold blood! Your whole race is selfish, violent, and cruel to the core! No, you _took your pleasures - when you were done, you killed her - I assume strangled her - then..."

"FUCK YOU!" Kevin snapped, trying to stand by the Deputy German Shepherd put a paw on his shoulder and shoved him right back down. "I never hurt her, I swear!"

"Sheriff, a word..." Muttered the Deputy.

"Fuck off," Come the short, bitten-off snarl from the Sheriff. "This bastard murdered one of our kind, and I'll fucking beat it out of him if I have to - It'd be a pleasure..."

"Sir..." Stammered the Sheppy, his ears flattening as for the first time, he_truly_ saw behind the Bovine's mask - and was sickened to his soul with what he saw lurking there. "We can't... there are laws and..."

"Deputy Wilfred..." Come the venomous, low voice. "You're dismissed..."

"I.. I'm sorry Sheriff, I can not leave you alone - the law..."

"FUCK THE LAW - I AM THE LAW IN THIS TOWN- " Raged the Sheriff.

Placing a quivering paw on his belt, near his holstered sidearm, the Deputy stood his ground, standing behind Kevin and trying to not be intimidated. His fists starting to clench again, the Sheriff glared at the Deputy, who swallowed and flattened his ears.

"I gave you an order, Deputy... get... out..."

Unable to stop the tremors, the Deputy crossed his arms over his chest and drew a deep breath.

"Sir, with due respect, I'm sorry Sheriff - I can not do that. It's my hide on the line to ensure the prisoner is safe."

"Safe?" Snarled the enraged sheriff. "SAFE? You haven't read the witness report - read_what this monster did to her... If you had, you'd put a bullet between his eyes right fucking _now... He's a human, you know how I feel about them! I wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire!"

Fighting to retain his composure, the Shepherd nodded sadly.

"I understand that Sheriff, but we have to follow the law. I can not in good conscience, leave you alone with the prisoner."

"Gods curse you, you mangy mongrel - when I'm done here - I'll have your badge and your gun on my desk by sundown!"

"You'll get it, gladly - Sheriff - I will not work under someone with such cruelty and bigotry in their heart. "You'll have it, the moment the troopers come to take him to County Jail pending trial, I swear it."

Enraged, the bull turned around and hefted the heavy dual reel tape recorder, then threw it across the office where it exploded into pieces. With an audible yelp, the Deputy flinched and involuntarily took a half-step backward.

"Until then... Sir...I'm not..."

With a crash, the front door slammed open, and in strode an older vulpine, dressed in a three-piece suit and carrying a briefcase.

"Not another word!" He snapped, his brush of a tail slashing back and forth. "This is my client, and as such he is under my legal protection - you, and you- out - I need to confer with my client."

"Fuck off..." Growled the Sheriff.

"Charming," Smiled the Vulpine, as he raised an eyebrow. "Such wit and eloquence!"

"Who the - " Kevin gasped.

"Not a single word!" Side-mouthed the Fox. "Go, now, you both know the laws protect an alleged_offender, go bust someone for littering, or jaywalking or - just_go..."

Placing his briefcase on the table, the Fox waved his dark-furred paws like he was literally shooing them away, then when they left - reluctantly - the Vulpine sighed and sat on the other side, resting his chin on his paws and sighing.

"My name is Charles, Charles Faladine, I'm your appointed public defender. I'd shake your hand but...well..."

"You're my... I never said I wanted a - "

Raising an eyebrow, the fox sighed. "Never mind all that. Now, you're... let's see..."

Picking up his briefcase, he snapped the locks and pulled out a file, which he dropped on the desk, then snapped the locks closed and put the briefcase aside.

"I got preliminary charges to outline and..." His muzzle fell open, his demeanor washing from his face, before he swallowed and snapped the folder closed, then stared, before he visibly composed himself.

"I swear, I never hurt her, she was the love of my life and..." Kevin began sobbing heartbrokenly.

"First-degree murder, of an otter girl, name..."

Kevin tuned him out, resting his head on the desk and crying helplessly.

"I loved her, truly and deeply, and she loved me - we were going to buy somewhere far away, get married..."

Idly, the fox listened, watching the reels on his personal tape recorder turning.

"Well, for what it's worth, I believe you - oh, don't look so surprised, I can hear the emotion in your voice, and well, being what I_am, your pheromones give you away. Now, all this is _alleged charges. As there is no DNA evidence, no...well, you're upset, but you can guess the rest. As your public-funded lawyer, I promise I'll do everything I can to get you exonerated in court. There's no DNA evidence, no body, no _proof_you...did what you're accused of."

"What happened to my sweet, gentle beloved? I need to know!"

With a sigh, Charles shook his head. "I do not know, I wish I had the answers and..."

One triangular ear flicked as he heard the front door open, then his gaze turned and saw two state troopers talking with the deputy.

"We got about less than five minutes - Now, sign here, accepting me as your lawyer and..."

Sliding over the paperwork, the vulpine placed a pen on it.

"I don't know - " Kevin wept piteously.

"Please - I'm your best and only hope - or you'd have called your own Lawyer, now, hurry - we don't have much time..."

Hurriedly, Kevin snatched up the pen and signed on the required lines. Quickly, the vulpine took back the paperwork and the pen and nodded, opening his briefcase.

"You'll be held in county, until the trial, I imagine it won't be long and from your records - you're familiar with the procedures..."

"I am... but I swear, I've turned my life around, Layla and I... we..."

Taking a folded handkerchief from his breast pocket, the vulpine slid it across the table.

"Thank...you - " Kevin sniffled, taking it and awkwardly drying his eyes.

"Sir?" Spoke one of the Troopers, stepping up behind Kevin.

"I know the routine - " Kevin sniffled, then when the hook was released, he stood up and watched them affix the ankle cuffs, before he shuffled out, the two troopers keeping a hold on his forearms.

Outside, a large crowd had gathered, pointing fingers, screaming obscenities, and worse. Kevin hung his head, enduring the hurtful words as the troopers escorted him outside and put him into the back of their van, affixing additional restraints from the shackles that bound him, to a large ring-bolt in the floor - then drove him off through the hysterical, angry crowds.

*

For three months, Kevin languished in County, until at last, the trial - taken before the judge of the Circuit court. As promised, the Vulpine public defender gave his all - and then some - quite often and convincingly arguing about the lack of a cadaver or any evidence. When the prosecution made their counterclaim, they placed their hand on a plastic evidence bag that sat on their table.

"Permission to present evidence, your honor?"

With a wave of his paw, the Elk nodded. "I will allow it."

Kevin started to stand, his eyes wide, as he glanced at the silk scarves he'd used to tie down Layla. With a growl, the vulpine grabbed him and sat him back down.

"This exhibit; has been forensically tested and is a conclusive DNA match to both the victim and the accused. There is evidence of mustelid blood and human semen... We would imply these were used, according to the witness report, which you have before you, to forcibly restrain Ms. Layla - "

"THAT'S A FUCKING LIE - " Kevin screamed in rage.

Banging the gavel, the elk glared down at Kevin. "SIR- I will have order in my court, or I _will_have you removed..."

"Shut up you fool - " Hissed the Vulpine, once again dragging Kevin back into his seat, before he stood and cleared his throat. "Objection your honor "

"I will hear your objection, councilor."

"I have sworn affidavits from the defendant, that their relationship was strictly consensual and unusual- as a consensual relationship between two adults... This evidence is inadmissible. Yes, the blood is circumstantial- mayhaps the alleged victim had a minor wound, unbeknown to the defendant? As for his DNA being on it - that too, is circumstantial and as such..."

Rising, the Bull Sheriff growled and then snarled in rage.

"Tell us you monster! Tell us how you took your sexual perversions, then how you tied that around that poor Otter's throat and strangled her... TELL US..."

Smashing the gavel repeatedly, the elk gestured and six large guardsmen rushed in and forcibly evicted the Sheriff from the courtroom.

Shuddering, the vulpine swallowed and bowed his head. "I have no further evidence to provide, your honor."

"Prosecution?"

"Nothing further, your honor."

Tapping the gavel the judge stood up, everyone in the court likewise standing.

"I will pass judgment, in my own time - court dismissed!"

*

Kevin sobbed, his head in his hands, as the judgment was called out...

Not Guilty...

*

Returning home - Kevin stared wide-eyed and horrified - his apartment was now a smoking ruin, taped off with police tape. Ignoring it, he walked into the gutted apartment, his booted feet crunching over the charcoal and burnt remains. For hours, he looked for anything, something, to remind him of his beloved - nothing but ashes remained...

*

That afternoon, he made his tearful way to the river, where he and Layla had first consummated their love for each over. As the sun began to set, his emotions consumed him, he dropped to his knees and cried heartbrokenly - there wasn't anyone to judge him, to throw hurtful words and laugh at him - he just unloaded his grief and suffering - alone and abandoned...

*

He stayed all that night, curled up in a fetal position, his grief and loss consuming him, when suddenly, he heard the soft footsteps of_something_- approaching him. Raising his head, he blinked, then did a double-take, seeing the full moonlight sparkle and shimmer off a form that walked towards him. Water dripped and puddled around its feet, before it stepped closer, its brilliant green eyes gazing up, its muzzle falling open as it stared up at him.

"Layla?" Kevin gasped.

"_My..."_Come a weak voice, her webbed paws slapping her wet muzzle.

"LAYLA!" Kevin wailed, then wrapped his arms around her tightly, feeling the wet, cold fur that was soaked - almost like she'd been swimming in the river. "Layla...what...who..."

"Shh..." Layla whispered, then hugged him, her wet fur cold around his neck. "Please my love... take me - make me remember you..."

"What...Layla, why are you wet..."

Layla sighed, then slipped her webbed paw down his chest, grabbing desperately at his trousers, her fingers fumbling with the belt.

"Hey, whoa, easy love - " Kevin laughed, lustful thoughts driving away the pain and surprise. "Take it easy honey..."

"No...time - " Layla squealed, her fingers interlacing with his jeans and tearing them down his thighs and shins, before she pulled them off.

Layla slapped his chest hard with a frustrated sigh, driving the startled Kevin flat onto his back, his erection straining at the tight boxer shorts he wore. She almost tore them off his hips in her frustration and arousal - her wet paws leaving his skin chilled and trembling.

"What's...gotten into you..." Kevin moaned, starting to grow fearful. "Layla, you're not...yourself - stop, please...you're...oh...oh..."

Layla wasted no time, straddling him, her left paw gripping the base of his penile shaft as she dropped her hips and sheathed him in one stroke.

"Urk!" Kevin gasped helplessly, his hands gripping her wet hips as she squealed and rocked with more enthusiasm and strength; than he could ever remember.

"No...time..." Layla squealed with each sharp thrust against him.

"Honey...please - there's...time, there's always..."

Layla squealed and slapped him - really- slapped him, her paw curled and short, sharp claws scratching his chest and drawing blood, before she wailed and with her other paw, gestured at the distant mountain ranges - above which the first glimmers of sunlight began to appear.

"NO TIME!" Layla shrieked, her cry startling the birds who exploded into the air.

"Honey...there's...oh...oh my god..." Kevin gurgled, as Layla crushed down and shuddered, her orgasm the greatest he'd ever brought her to - his own coming with a force and recklessness that left him shaking and exhausted.

First one, then another, sunbeam crested the distant hills and like fingers of warmth and life - spread their way towards the two lovers.

"No..." Layla suddenly wailed in pure mustelid terror. "No, please...."

Deep inside her, his second orgasm sending pulse after pulse into his beloved's womb and cervix, Kevin was oblivious to the horrific changes that were happening to his beloved otter girl.

Her fur and skin began to grow translucent, losing substantive structure as the sunlight rose higher and higher.

"Kevin...I loved you..." Layla wept, her tears sliding down her wet muzzle and splattering on his chest. "River...near bridge..."

"Wait..." Kevin blinked away the tears of pleasure; before he gasped and stared up - sickened and horrified - for his beloved was now almost completely translucent - like a ghost.

His hands suddenly passed straight through her, as Layla threw back her head and tried to scream - before she wavered and vanished as the sun crested the distant mountain ranges...

"Layla...no..." Kevin screamed helplessly, grabbing at the air; as if he could bring back his beloved.

*

He would remain there, heartbroken and crying, for hours, grieving the loss of his beloved, his soul mate - taken all too soon -

*

Days later, Police Divers recovered Layla's body... It was revealed, she'd gone swimming and dived down, the hysterical Kevin telling the police how much she loved the freshwater mussels that grew on the concrete pylons. Her right foot had become trapped by a sunken branch. A coroner later revealed through the autopsy, that Layla had drowned...

*

He stood alone before her grave, then knelt down and placed a bunch of roses - one for every year she'd been alive - then stood, clasping his hands before his stomach as he felt the hot, bitter tears begin to trickle down his face.

"Layla, my beloved - how I wish we could have shared our love and lives until our last days. With your inheritance, I swear, I will make your dream come true... I swear this to you, my dear, sweet Layla..."

As he bowed his head, he would swear until his dying days, he felt a cold, webbed paw placed on his belly, then her sweet, beautiful voice carry on the wind...

You know? Everyone thinks I should be afraid of you... but I'm not...
