Petty Nothingness

I am going through a nasty divorce IRL. The beginning events are true but the ending and 2 years are not. I just needed to get something out.

Drake stood with the doorknob shaking in his taloned, scaled hand staring at the visitor that had rung his doorbell.

"Well," the short fox asked as she shivered in the snow, tears streaking the fur under her brown eyes. "A-arent you going to let me in?"

Overwhelmed by surging emotions Drake had to wrestle with himself a moment before stepping wordlessly aside and allowing the fox to enter what had at one time been their home.

Quickly the fox stepped into the living room and wiped her shoes on the rug as she wiped her eyes, not daring to look up or at Drake as he slowly closed the door and stepped away from the her as she began

"I-I am sorry I just....didn't have anywhere else to go and I-"

"What do you want Shyann?" the gray dragon interrupted quietly, pain and rage bleeding into his words as he stepped around her, placing as much distance as he could and keeping his back to her.

"I found out Luke cheated on me and I.....I don't know what do to....." she replied nervously shifting her weight on her heels and her tail tucked around them as she stared at the winged back of her once husband.

Drake was silent for a moment as hurtful retorts and hateful comments raced through his mind and his heart screamed to hold her. The dragon choked a lump of emotion from his throat and replied without turning.

"I am sorry to hear that."

Shyann wrapped her arms around herself to try to warm herself as much as comfort herself, trying to think of words to say, trying to justify coming back to the home that had broken. She cleared her throat softly and took a tentative step towards the dragon and kept speaking.

"Look I know-" she began but again Drake interrupted.

"Two years," the dragon said softly, each word tinged with anger and regret, "TWO YEARS since you destroyed this home, took MY son, and vanished. And now you have the AUDACITY to come back to the home you tore apart and want sympathy?"

The pain and rage in Drake's voice stopped Shyann mid step and she lowered her gaze to the floor, her brown eyes sparkling with tears again as she began to wring her hands together as the silence stretched on for between them.

Slowly Drake turned and Shyann could see his green slitted eyes burning with tears and the pain of loss.

"You took my son. You took my family. You took EVERYTHING from me. Why, oh WHY do you think I would give you ANY sympathy?!" he hissed in barely contained anger at her.

"I-I know that things didn't end well with us-" she stuttered before being cut off again.

"END WELL?!" Drake snapped, his voice breaking in anguish, "We went through a miscarriage and you shut down! You didn't let me help you! My 'wife' chose to let that fester in her heart and when I tried to talk to you, tried to comfort you, you pushed me away! And then after you let me try for 3 months, love you for 3 months, do my side of the relationship for 3 months, you ended it with a PHONE CALL while I was coming home from work!"

Drake's voice broke entirely at the end, tears began to stream down his scaled cheeks as he continued speaking, stepping deliberately towards Shyann as she continued to look at the floor with her ears laid back in shame.

"And then you went back to the ex that talked you into getting an abortion when you got pregnant instead of being a father barely 3 WEEKS after you DESTROYED us!"

"We were 18 at the time Drake. I don't hold that against him." Shyann responded softly in defense as Drake's scaled legs entered her vision.

"And that matters HOW?!" Drake demanded, his voice baring down on his former wife with all the rage and anguish he had been holding onto unknowingly, "Do you have ANY idea what that did to ME?! I went from having a family and a home into a nightmare of black, empty NOTHINGNESS! Then you let Malik get taken by the state because of your neglect and I get to see him once a month with his fosters IF I am lucky!"

Shyann looked up slowly meeting his gaze with her own and swallowing her own lump of emotions.

"I'm sorry. I am so sorry for what I did. I was lost in my pain and shut everyone out. Even the one that I shouldn't have. You. I know that I messed up with Luke and the last few years and I don't know if you can forgive me or if we can ever mend that damage but tonight, please, I-I just need someone to hold me together....."

Drake stood silent for another long moment as he stared at the broken fox before him. Slowly he reached out one arm and Shyann, taking it for a gesture of comfort, held up her arms and gave a greatful sob as she waited for his familiar, forgotten embrace.

But it never came.

Drake reached behind her and opened the front door again letting a cold blast of arctic hit her in the back and freeze her tears to her fur.

"Find your comfort there," he said, pointing into the swirling snow of the pitch black night, "In the darkness. In the cold. Alone. Like you left me to do."

Leveling his gaze at the stunned fox Drake's voice dripped with venom.

"Now get out of my house."
