True Love in Trying Times (M/M foxes)

Raising cubs isn't easy for any couple, no matter how much you love each other. But sometimes a mental breakdown IS the solution...

So it turned out that newborn babies weren't easy to take care of, and that the power of love and commitment couldn't get them through everything. After screaming at Oscar that he got the luxury of leaving his family behind every morning for a day of easy office work, David had stormed into the bedroom, slammed the door, woke up the baby again, and went to sleep.

It was dark now and guilt soaked through his chest like dishwater in a nasty old sponge.

They'd been together since they were teenagers, and after a lot of work finding a surrogate, David had been dreaming about the nursery, feeding their daughter with his husband, and teaching her to say dada. But what actually happened, day in and day out, was that Oscar went to work and David had a mental breakdown for eight hours until he got home.

He hadn't slept more than four hours every night. Dinner was the only meal he could count on--most mornings he was eating crackers dipped in peanut butter and then, if he was lucky, a lot of corn chips at lunch. He'd lost the TV remote twice and both times found it in the refrigerator. And now he'd yelled at his own husband--the man he'd sworn to love through the good times and the bad times. Well, these were bad times, and he'd failed already.

Time for an apology, at least. He went into the living room.

"My darling!" Oscar jumped up, tail wagging. Even now, his red snout, giant ears, and fluffy fox tail never failed to make David's heart beat a little faster. And he was no less handsome with a sleeping baby strapped to his chest.

"Oscar," David said. "About earlier. I--"

"I made dinner," Oscar said. "Spicy noodles! We haven't had spicy noodles in weeks. I made waffles and froze them so all you have to do in the morning is pop them in the oven and add syrup. And I packed you a bento box lunch, too."

David gaped.

"I know you're sorry about shouting at me," Oscar said, drawing him into a hug. "But it doesn't matter. Because I'm sorry for not realizing how bad you were struggling. From now on, I'm making you breakfast, lunch and dinner. And you know what? Evenings are David Time. I'll take the baby, you do whatever the hell you want."

"Oscar," David said. Automatically, he swept his tail around their legs, and found Oscar's ready to meet it. They twisted their tails together like they'd been doing since they were teenagers. "I--I love you. Thank you."

"We're a team, my love. It's time I acted like it." He kissed David's forehead. "And seeing as it's evening, that means it's David Time. Which means you--" gently, he poked David in the shoulder, "are going right back to sleep."

"But--"

"I love you, goodnight!"

Oscar pushed him back into the bedroom, and David got back in the bed, unable to stop smiling--just like when they were teenagers.
