Summary: A fallen dragon rider must now face whether they wish to have an honorable death or be free with the mount that saved their life.

Kifka died the moment the chain of his dragon's harness snapped. Three days prior he spotted the link that had been filed away, but thought he'd have time to fix it--now the pitch of the air changed. Born by the buckles and hooks tied to the harness now torn from his dragon's back, Kifka watched his hands flutter, worthless to the shapes still spinning in the embattled air above his now falling form.

A dragon rider's bond to their mount meant the mount would experience the pain of the fall. So when a dragon lost their rider, they dove deadly as hawks, cutting the rider's life short. Kifka's sort never lived to reach the ground, and Kifka's sort never suffered to let a riderless dragon escape. They'd kill her here in battle or send hunting parties to kill her should she escape.

This was how dragon riders ensured their mount protected them no matter what.

The chains would make his fall faster. The harness itself doubled his weight, and Kifka was by no means a small wolf. He floated above himself, watching like he'd done for so many other riders before him. And his mount, a blur of bright brass disoriented by the killing blow, contorted and dove. Wind knocked out of him, Kifka could not even take a breath. Heard nothing but the wind rattling his body. Her terror boiled into his mind, and his acceptance fizzled, too. He'd been waiting for months now, every look in her eyes a reminder of his killer. She knew, too, what awaited her, she'd helped him hunt down riderless dragons before.

How could she possibly be afraid now?

Her adrenaline pumping in his veins, her claws reaching to slit him apart, closing.

Catching the harness instead. His flight suit yanked by its leather straps as he slammed to a stop, plucked from the air. She quickly corrected, sweeping low enough he could have slapped the ground.

Tag, you're it. He thought, before his dragon banked to the right, dodging a bolt of fire from above. They still chased her. Would say she planned to take him to some hovel and eat him there.

But her feelings came as a second shock, a mixture of that fear and now relief. Relief she'd caught him. That his body flailed helplessly beneath her. She just needed to escape. This battle had just begun, it would not be worth breaking rank for one careless rider's dragon. She beat her wings harder than Kifka ever witnessed. The ghosts of her shoulder blade's aches sinking into him. And the fear, Kifka now understood, had been for him.

"I cannot hold my wing all night," Vivokenn said to her stubborn rider.

"Then switch them," Kifka said aloud. Like every rider, his mind had been trained to dam the river of their bond down to a single, trickling thread. She could only ever feel his pain and discomfort. Felt now Kifka's body aching in the full-body flight suit he stubbornly still wore. It was a thing of different layered leathers crafted and enchanted to resist wind, water, cold, and even a dragon's flames. A lucky enough rider could even survive a fall from the air, a shame their dragons never let them test it.

Vivoken impatiently scraped the wet forest floor with her forepaw. "I will not be able to fly us tomorrow anymore than you'd be able to hold onto me if you kept your arms outstretched all night."

Between them, a fire she had built while he pouted in the dirt remained lit and warming against the storm. But it wavered in its pit. If Kifka simply rested against her he would be plenty warm, but he treated her as if she carried a plague.

Staring into the fire, Kifka muttered, "Then drop them, dragon."

"So you can die of exposure?"

Kifka bounced his gloved fist on his padded knee. "I won't die in this."

She snarled and her head snaked closer to the fire, trying to catch his gaze. "I could sense how cold you were when I lit the fire. The rain will put it out."

His dull amber met her yellow slitted eyes. "Why should you care if I am alive or dead?"

Vivokenn had never considered Kifka different from other riders. He treated her like a nameless beast. He knew her name, and like every dragon rider, he refused to ever speak it. Her people, enslaved for centuries as they were, still remembered what they once had been.

"I didn't save you just for you to die."

"You saved me because it might be the only way to save yourself."

Just because he felt her emotions didn't mean he understood them. His cold rationalization made Vivokenn hurt.

"Trying to tell me you aren't selfish, dragon?"

"Yes, I want to live. I want to live with you."

"That makes one of us." He started grabbing at the straps of his wrists, undoing them to wrench free his gloves.

"Did I truly get raised from hatching to be the mount of a coward?"

"A coward," Kifka snapped as he ripped his mask and helm free, "is the one who flees a good death." He threw the mask into the now muddy dirt and jumped to his feet. Even being tall for his kind, Kifka still only came up to her shoulder when both stood. He said, "Just like you, dragon, I was forced into this life. They're not going to be any more merciful to me than you. They won't let a dragon who ran rejoin the legion again." He held open his arms, "So make it quick for me if you like, dragon, because I'd rather die of the cold than let the hunters find me."

Kifka spun on his heel to disappear in the trees, but she swerved in front of him fast as a striking snake. "I felt your jealousy."

Kifka recoiled like Vivokenn shoulder-checked him. He tensed up, back to the fire, ears folding backwards, lips curling into a snarl. "You can't feel my emotions, dragon."

"A month ago, when you watched them take me to be bred, you got jealous. Then realized why you felt jealousy, and became so upset you lost control of your connection."

His snarl dropped. Eyes wide, now terrified by the sight of her.

"I felt it only a moment, but I knew what you wanted. What scared you so badly you wouldn't ever admit it to another. There was a reason I never let a single male mount me after that."

Kifka actually laughed. "To save yourself for me? Did you forget you've laid three clutches now?"

She snorted and sat down on her haunches, finally pulling the wing hanging over him away. The rain soaked into his ruddy, clay-red fur, the white lining the underside of his jaw darkening to the color of the clouds overhead.

"You think you have nothing to live for, but you have me. Kifka..."

"I am your master, dragon." Kifka reached for authority, but it came out petulant. A child near to tears. She'd never seen one of his kind so broken, as if the truth struck harder than the ground he fell towards that morning.

"My name is Vivokenn, and I will turn around and sit on you if you keep being so foolish."

"We are dead. You understand? The hunters will find us."

"Then why are we wasting time?"

Kifka stance went limp, and for the first time since landing them safely next to these unmarked woods, he let Vivokenn approach him.

When she sat next to Kifka, he looked up at her blankly. She wrapped her forelegs around him and hugged him tight to her barrel. He didn't try to squirm free, and Vivokenn purred, fanning forward her wings to block out the rain. She whispered in his mind, "I am not asking you to accept mine or your feelings. Just... let me keep you safe and warm through the night."

"Vivokenn..." her name formed like a lantern in the bleak landscape of his mind. He saw himself kneeling at a river bank. Vivokenn's thoughts, feelings, everything, rushing water before him. They will tell you they have names. Never speak them. It is a trick to weaken your defenses.

The ugly truth only riders spoke was that dragons were smarter than the bipeds that enslaved them. If they allowed, even for a moment, the dragon into their mind, the beast would strip them bare. He'd seen potential riders in his class get brought to their knees by migraines. One who died of a stroke.

Vivokenn... even thinking it brought an unfamiliar light, and for the first time he saw his reflection in the water of her mind, then falling again. He'd not meant to anymore than that morning. Her mind, warm and rich, flooded his. But it was not a tsunami clotheslining a coast, it was arms embracing him, catching him. He felt surrounded and suspended in her. Her thoughts no more drowned him than her scent. Floral yet metallic, like flowers in a rainwashed iron vase. Breathing her in made his whiskers twitch. Gods he loved her scent and had to pretend for so long--

"You knew if you'd been caught that they would have killed me thinking I'd somehow tainted you."

And he couldn't stand losing her. Riders either died on the field or retired into slaves that did all the work to make the legion run, with no bond to any dragon, with no freedoms to be had. "All I could do was protect you." He trembled against her. "It wasn't a good life, but it was all we had."

"Now we can have each other."

"Until the hunters come."

Vivokenn had no illusions of their chances. She accepted they could delay the inevitable, but neither could think of a place for a dragon to live safely. They could only flee till they couldn't anymore.

"Why would you possibly want me, though?" Kifka asked through their bond. Not intentionally, now fully joined, his thoughts passed to her like whispers into a lover's ear. "I've never once treated you like you should be treated."

"How should I be treated?"

"You should be worshipped," Kifka breathed, so quiet it was lost to the rain pelting the membranes of her wings. His pawpads slid along the tough plate at her collarbone to the coarse then smooth bands of her creamy underside. By the time he reached her upper abdomen, her scales had already turned as soft and warm as a sunbathing garden snake. He never got the chance to simply touch anything but her back. A rider did not take care of their dragon, they took care of their equipment, their mount's harness. They told Kifka his bond to Vivokenn made extended periods of contact dangerous.

But he'd never felt safer.

Vivokenn's needs swelled at his touch, and Kifka gasped, feeling heat pump through his loins. "I wanted this so badly I dreamed of it," she admitted, and her claws extended, dug into his leathers. She wanted to know what his fur felt like under all this, wanted to know his scent. Not the smell of his silly leather casing.

It came off slowly, without either backing away from the other. His face nuzzled into the base of her throat, his hips swaying. He guided her to strip him, carefully, using his more dexterous fingers when hers were too big or cumbersome. When next they flew, he would need the suit. He gasped as Vivokenn's snout burrowed into the thick, dark red fur on his nape. She sucked in a breath and exhaled in a growl. He felt her rumbling along his muzzle and now exposed chest.

She resisted going lower till he kicked off his pants and undergarments. Her forepaws, big enough to close completely around his head, wrapped around his bottom. He huffed as she squeezed him there, docked tail flagging. Vivokenn nuzzled into his sternum before she took a deep breath: the smell of oiled leathers gave way to his lupine scent. His sweat and his musk. She cooed and nosed lower, her grip shifting until Kifka arms went up. He grabbed her curved, steel-capped horns to keep his balance as she lifted him off the ground, nosing into his crotch. Kifka gasped as she inhaled again. His musk sharp in his nostrils, as if he'd somehow managed to shove his snout there instead.

Her pulse quickened, and heat flooded her loins sure as his. Kifka's sheath twitched as the thin lips of her muzzle kissed it; puckered what little they could on her plated face, they closed a seal around his cock. His tongue tingled with the taste of his arousal as she licked it. He folded over her head, resting himself between her horns. Vivokenn's tongue squeezed inside of his sheath. Her forked muscle's taper quickly thickening. She growled as the inner fluids of his sheath coated her tongue. Reflexively, he bucked his hips, and the tip of his cock blossomed into her warm, suckling maw. Her tongue offered a bed of thick, spongy tastebuds that quickly coiled round his length.

They both moaned, pleasure shared. Kifka hugged her neck, blunt claws digging into tough scales. He could do nothing but squirm in her grip as her suckling maw worked him to full mast. Pressure at the back of Kifka's throat almost made him gag, but it was only a testament to his size as his meat pressed into Vivokenn's gullet. He twitched in the coils of her long, prehensile tongue. The toes of his paws curled, feet bicycling in the air.

"You are such a quick trigger, pup," Vivokenn teased. Her presence in his mind as consuming as her maw around his loins.

Kifka had never been very attracted to his own sort. He'd done his duty to the legion when they asked him to sire pups, but it had always been a chore. Never had he taken this sort of pleasure before--magnified by Vivokenn's shared presence, by her enjoyment in his flavor: the saltiness of his precum, the metallic undertones of his sheath, the musk of his pubic fur right in her nostrils. Her perverted delight had his knot already swelling, the inflating flesh pressing against the back of her canines.

"Let go, let me be the first to taste your seed," Vivokenn pleaded. Her cunt dripped between her thighs, unable to resist all the sensation pouring through her bonded partner.

Thick gouts of precum were not enough. She craved more. Wanted to taste how fertile he was, wanted him and him alone to seed her. The thought of her quickening--

Kifka howled. His knot hadn't even fully inflated. He should have been embarrassed for spilling like a teenager. His limbs quaked and spasmed, and he gushed one gout of thick lupine seed into her throat before she snaked her maw backwards, muzzled open.

"Watch," Vivokenn commanded, and Kifka somehow sat up at her order, looking down at her dagger-lined maw. His cock was a deeper red to the almost pink flesh of her mouth. It jumped up as it fired a third rope of cum before slapping wetly down on her tongue. Sticky strings of seed spilled all over that open muzzle. Watching wide-eyed, as pearls of his essence pooled on her tongue and gums, became a glossy sheen across her molars. After the ninth shot, his balls began to unclench, his dick no longer throbbing and twitching across her panting maw.

Kifka tasted it. He had never tasted his own seed before, nor another male's, but Vivokenn's satisfaction at the flavor of his essence overrode any potential disgust. An underlying sweetness came with savory and earthy tones. Gently, Vivokenn set down the shaky-legged wolf, eyes half-lidded as she closed her maw and swallowed. Kifka swallowed at the same time, feeling the creamy ropes of seed slide down his throat.

"We are far from done." Vivokenn turned around and hiked her tail like any bitch in heat might. The rain had softened to a sprinkle, and phased Kifka no more than it did his dragoness at this point. Not his dragon, his dragoness. At the base of her tail, the scales softened and darkened to a stormcloud grey. Her pucker was a wrinkled divot of soft, inviting flesh between two powerful glutes she used to help herself take to the air, and lower still her folds already were inflamed.

Her puffed up labia blushed red under a tender coat of scales, winking at a flex of her pelvic floor, beckoning Kifka closer to his dragoness. Vivokenn's rump was soft and warm along his paws, wet from rain but far from cold. Heat emanated from her vent inviting as a warm hearth.

He'd smelled her sex before during her heats. At the time, its heady, almost floral musk had flustered him. He'd always found her enticing, always wanted to taste her. His jaw hung open a little now, saliva building on his tongue as he leaned closer. Kifka's paws parted Vivokenn's folds, and the smell of her arousal hit him so hard he whined, blinking back tears. His knot had not even deflated by the time blood surged back to his engorged length. He nuzzled into her snatch, moisture covering his chops and nose. His tongue dragged across the opening of her vent, and she felt the heat and need radiate through her. Kifka moaned, and pressed his muscle into her folds. The taste of her arousal a shock to his system. His dick leaked anew at her pungent flavor.

Hackles raised, ears folded back, Kifka lapped at her sex, filling his muzzle with her nectar. Vivokenn guided him where to touch, how his tongue felt best running up the length of her vulva. He found her throbbing clit and slurped it into his maw, its size comparable to his thumb. His thumb wedging its way inside her. Her walls clamping down. Her body shuddering.

"Enough." Vivokenn shoved him back with a rock of her hips. She settled further down onto her knees, lowering her backside to be evenly level with him. "Mount me already."

Kifka wanted more to pleasure her the way she had him, but his thoughts she cut off with a snarl.

"You can worship me after you've spilled your seed inside me."

Kifka bit his lip and nodded. He felt her ache in his belly. A longing for something she had recently refused. He stepped up to her backside. She craned her neck backwards to watch him, slitted pupils wide with a fiery lust. He did not spare her any ceremony, but guided his tip to her entrance before jamming it inside.

Kifka had to grab her tail to keep from doubling over. He gasped as she clamped down on him, surprised to learn she found his size satisfying. He always knew himself well endowed, and that male dragons had lengths smaller than a horse, but he expected his knot to be swallowed by her, not press tight to her clenching vent. He humped and ground his meat against her slick vulva. Heat and pleasure spread out through his groin and lower abdomen: hers.

He took a breath, panting as he set his feet and began pumping his pelvis. He realized Vivokenn's earlier oral milking had been necessary for him to not shoot immediately. Her pleasure combined with the tight, cloying grip of her sex had his teeth chattering. Kifka snarled and forced himself to work his hips. Her insides were warm as a hot spring, and left the wolf sweating as he pushed against her. His balls slapped wetly against her clitoral mound, each bash a bright sensation through them both.

Kifka bowed his head and continued fucking her, watching his cock slip in and out, her inner walls clinging to his crimson girth. Tension built in Vivokenn's core, and Kifka quickly recognized it as her orgasm dawning. Clumsily, he reached down and rubbed his fingerpads against her clit. Teeth gritted, he pinched her button and jerked it off best he could while humping her, wrist smashed between his pelvis and her soaking sex.

It worked, though. Vivokenn screeched, the sensation unlike any the dragoness had felt, to be filled so while her clit was abused. She gushed fluid and drenched Kifka's sheath and balls in her scent. One powerful contraction crushed her walls along his length before her muscles relaxed, only a moment, but enough for Kifka's fat knot to jam its way inside her sex. Another spasm ran down her body as his spade-tip smacked her cervix.

They both groaned as her orgasm crashed through Kifka and sent him over the edge. The tight glove of her sex rippled along his length, milking his knot as his balls, stinking of her orgasm, jumped against her sex. A rich, tingling heat blossomed below the wolf's navel as he seeded his dragoness. Rope after rope of virile lupine cum pouring in against her cervix. He collapsed against her, holding onto the base of her tail as they both were rocked by their mutual orgasm.

Kifka's head spun, panting as he rested there. That strange heated pleasure turned into a satisfaction, a smug certainty relayed through their bond.

"I can't wait to bear your clutch."

Kifka's ear flicked. "That's... that is possible?" he mumbled.

"A rider and dragon's true bond is a powerful thing. Far more powerful than your people know, but ours remember."

Kifka licked his chops and glanced up. The rain had cleared. He asked, "Is it powerful enough to elude the legion's hunters?"

"Time will tell."

"I don't like that answer."

"The worst that can happen is we die free."

Freedom. Since the day the legion recruiter took him from his home at eight, Kifka had never considered it.

He shut his eyes and sighed. "Thank you, Vivokenn, for saving me today.

"Thank you, for trusting me with your true feelings, with a true bond."

It felt alien to think he ever denied it.
