Rising Anew -Chapter 12 cont.- Train & Realize Your Life

The old oak door to the library slid open without a sound as Narcenac and Narina entered, stiffling their conversation. Slowly making their way through the rows of shelves and tables, the two young tigers found their usual table and sat down.

"What are we supposed to be doing today?" Narina whispered.

"I think we are learning the history of the glade some more." he replied silently. With a small smile, he reached for her paw and squeezed it softly when she put it in his grasp.

A soft chuckling brought Narcenac and Narina back to their surroundings with a start.

"Hello young lovers." Purrma said, pronouncing her arrival. In her arms were many bound books of history. Slowly the elder tiger sat each of the texts down on the table. 1412, 1481, 1542, 1606, 1675, the dates just went on until they reached 2007.

"Purrma... Why do those books have dates on them?" Narina asked curiously. Reaching for one of the books she looked it over, a single name on one corner of the cover.

"These tomes are only written once a generation. By that generations recorder. Each Recorder's name is placed on the cover in the lower right corner and the records are titled according to the day they were finished." Purrma said, smiling at her inquisitive charge. Without a sound, she slid the first record towards the two students. The leather bound book was heafty, and was covered in prints of leaves, flowers and a sword wrapped in a rose vine. Its date was 1355, the name in the corner read Tritia.

"1355... but, the Americas werent discovered till far after that Purrma." Narcenac exclaimed. "How is it that the glade is that old?"

"Open it dear child." was her only reply.

He looked at her for a moment then did as he was told.

******************

~The year was 1304. War had split the clan in half. The Tengrest had decided that it would be better to control the humans. Fools, we lived in peace before the humans discovered us and we were forced to act to continue our hiding.

We spent 5 months on the ocean, bad weather, sharks, whales... I think we had the worst of luck. The Necromanta are safe though. We will continue on. I do miss my friends on the Tengrest side of the clan, I pray they are safe.

We travelled across these beautiful fields of gold. Some of the hunters came across humans as we camped one night. It seems they are still one with nature. I hope these humans will learn to be better than those we left behind. Loman figured out how to converse with them. It was suprisingly easy. They had some of their people guide us through the countryside, showing us what dangers this land holds.

It grew colder, the humans had returned to their people and told us that we would not be betrayed by them. Two of them had began changing. Yttra said it was that they were like us, only it was locked away and now it could be free. I hope it was the way things were meant to be.

We finally found a home. This hidden glade. We had travelled for days through this forest when finally we saw it around us. The snow was pure and brilliant, the trees grew grand and strong. This was it, the perfect home, as though it was handed down by the ancestors specifically for us.~

Narcenac skipped through several pages at a time now.

~The winter was hard to us that year. Blizzard after blizzard hit. If the tunnels werent somewhat completed, i dont think we could have made it. We lost four that winter. 3 of them to a cave-in caused by a falling tree. The other lost do to the cold. A young new-born. They are all missed desperately.

The Changed that had left us, somehow managed to find their way to the edge of the forest, some of the scouts brought them to the glade and a large celebration was held. They were Wolves and Cougars. We have been over joyed since they decided to maintain a regular visiting schedule with us.

New Changed have appeared recently. They dont come near the glade because its hidden, but they seem to be weary of the forest. These changed resemble goats, and snakes. Loman has even said he has seen some that resemble the dog like creatures around here. We did not know humans lived in this area, and have seen no sign of them in the 24 years we have been here. It is possible that the local animals are changing too. Not many, but a few. That would explain their weariness.

We were attacked. It was ramshamble, and unorganized, like animals attacking prey. They didnt manage to kill or even injure anyone. It was the goat looking changed. This is disturbing considering we have never bothered them before. The council has decided to build a wall around the glade. Plans are being drawn up. I hope to see its construction begin before i grow too old.

I am old now. I have lived a good life. Our wall is almost completed, and this will be the last history i write in this old stack of parchment. Soon my son Remat will be the new Recorder. The glade is full of young this year and i am happy. The warmth of the son in my bones is comforting. Now its time i pass the reins down and take my rest with the others too old to be of much use. I bless the future children and those here now. May you all live long happy lives and remember your beginnings.~

In the back cover, an enscription read thus: "The Tiger Will show in this family again. The last words of our Recorder, Tritia."

This enscription caused Narina and Narcenac to look up at their grandmother in awe. Purrma reached over and held open another book cover, showing them the same description by another Recorder. "These have been the last words of every Recorder since we came to this land. It is a guide to those who must change like you did." she whispered softly.

Silent thought reigned over the young tigers as they took in what they had been taught. Their clan history becoming even more a mystery and clearer all at the same time.
