Seekers Tale part 1

I am carefully returning the vase to its proper place on the table from where I just knocked it off as I paced in the darkness of my room when I hear a small sound come from my door. When I turn to see what it is my vision is filled with a blinding white light as my room is illuminated from an unknown source. Barely having time to react to my sudden blindness I hear the door flung open and I am knocked to the floor and can feel the edge of a sharp blade pressed to my throat. After a few heartbeats my vision slowly returns and I find myself staring up into the eyes of my assailant. The man whom I have recently expressed my love for, well perhaps man is not the right word for he is not a man but rather a werewolf. I'm not surprised at that though because so am I.

Perhaps I should start at the beginning, or at least the beginning of this tale. My name is Seeker at least that is what I tell people when they ask, my real name I keep to myself. I chose Seeker because it seems to fit me more than any other name. I have been searching the world for over three thousand years now but for what I don't really know. Now I may be old but to anyone who did not know me better they would not think me to be over 25 years of age. But perhaps more astonishing than my age is the place that I once called home, I come from a land where humans and werewolves lived side by side and lived in harmony, more or less. I am the last surviving person from the lost city of Atlantis. More than that though, I am also the last guardian of Atlantis, though what I guard now I don't know and some days when I am alone and see what the world is like and how it has changed through the passing of the centuries, I don't really care.

But as fascinating as you would find a story of Atlantis to be I could not tell you, for I was barely more than a pup and the newest guardian when my home was destroyed along with all its glory and wonder save what I carried with me. However this is not that kind of story, this story is much more recent and much closer to my heart....

.....

In my natural form, or my wolf form as normal humans call it, I am just a hair over 9 feet tall with golden fur, deep amber eyes, overall not a very distinguished wolf save for a patch of blue hair on my right wrist in the shape of a trident. When I am in my human form I am roughly 6 ½ feet tall, give or take an inch. I have brown hair, hazel eyes, lightly tanned skin and the same blue trident on my wrist. But that is enough about me.

I suppose to start this story I should begin with a brief history of my current place in life. I currently live outside of a small human village with a few other werewolves, we have formed a loose clan more out of convenience than any real loyalty to each other, and I am the alpha. Granted I have never had to fight for the title it was just something that happened, as we all came together I was just looked to as the leader, weather they sensed something in me that they respected, or none of them simply wanted the job, I suspect the latter, I became the undisputed alpha. Don't get me wrong being the alpha of a pack of werewolves does have its privileges; it also has its drawbacks. You never really understand the meaning of the phrase 'lonely at the top' till your there yourself. It is good to have a pack that follows you and believes you are perfect; the problem with that though is they believe I am perfect, far from it and I know it.

Well we had all managed to live together fairly well for several years near that village, even going so far as to gain the tolerance, if not the trust of the towns folk. We left them alone, they left us alone, but what they didn't know was that we were secretly protecting them from monster in the dark far worse than we were. But we liked it that way.

One day I was in town with one of the younger females of the clan who was just coming into her powers and had sought me out to help her learn to control them. We were just taking the day off to relax and get away from the pack life for a while, master and student learning about life as it were. We were just casually walking through town, in our human forms, when my life changed, though at the time I did not know it....

...............................................

"Come on Seeker, sometimes you're so slow." The excited young woman calls out from several paces ahead. "Now is that any way to talk to your teacher or Alpha?" I call to her, the locals pretend not to hear what I said choosing to think it is some unusual title for a educator and not my title as leader of a pack of werewolves. She calms down and looks ashamed "No its not, I'm sorry," then in the same breath her smiling excitement returns and she is bouncing again "but there is this really cool store I saw last time we were here, they have all kinds of old books and talismans that could help me learn my powers better!" I look down at her with a stern expression "Now Luna, what have I told you time and again?" She rolls her eyes before turning to look at me "that the only way to control magical powers is through study, hard work, and practice, there are no short cuts and trying to find one will cause more harm than good." I nod approvingly then let a small smile show "ok, so where is this shop?" she jumps and takes off down the walk way waiting only long enough for me to catch up before she takes off again, never getting out of my sight.

When we finally reach the store she hurries on in ahead to explore, I just smile and shake my head as I follow in. I have been to this store many times the vast majority of the stuff here is just harmless trinkets with no real magical influence at all. Sure occasionally they will get an odd spell book, or talisman that is real, when that happens the shop keeper will keep it hidden till I come in and can inspect it. He does this because the one time that I told him that one of the wands he had was real he laughed and called me nuts that is until a kid blew a ten foot hole in the side of his store.

Today when I walk in he quickly waves me over to show some of the new items he has purchased, I am able to tell him that none of them are magical, but just as I turn to see where Luna is a small ring catches my eye. There is nothing unusual about the ring, just a simple gold ring with a ruby, sapphire, emerald, and diamond fixed in the setting. But as soon as I pick it up and study it I realize it is not an ordinary ring, nothing dangerous, but definitely magical. So I pay the shop keeper a sum that I feel is adequate for the ring, the fact that it is more than he normally makes in a year is not lost on him, but he says nothing and goes about helping the other customers. I slip the ring in my pocket with the intent to study it more when we get back home.

"What did you find?" I ask as I peer over Luna's shoulder causing her to jump and nearly drop the book she was holding. "Oh, it's you Seeker" she turns back to the book and holds it up for me to see "it talks about different ways that magic can manifest in people, and of prominent magic users in history." I take the book and thumb through it; some of the names it mentions are familiar to me. "Good find it should help with your studies. I hope you plan to buy it." Luna smiles when I give her the praise of finding something that was worthwhile and she runs to the shop owner and purchases the book.

While she is purchasing her book a strange sent catches my attention and I follow it to the door where it disappears. As I am standing there scanning the area Luna comes up beside me "something wrong?" "No, nothing just thought I smelled something." I turn back to her and smile. "What do you say we head home and have a nice meal?" Her eyes brighten at the suggestion "Are you cooking?" "I suppose, no one else seems to ever want to around there." "And why would they? Even your worst meals are fit for kings." "Well I don't know about that."

.......................................

As Seeker and Luna head out of the store and turn to leave town a shadow moves between the buildings following them, but not threatening, not yet. After a few moments the shadow itself is followed by another smaller shadow. This smaller form is trying to remain hidden and undetected by the shadow it is following, but the urgency in its movements is apparent.

..........................................

After a traveling for a few minutes we have left the town and entered the nearby forest following a worn path that leads to our home when Luna turns to me, "Are we far away from town now seeker? I feel naked without my fur on." trying to hide my grin at her youth "Yeah we are far enough away" "Thank you..." She quickly darts into the underbrush to change back to her were form, still being modest about her change, a few moments later she steps back out onto the path as a 7 foot tall black werewolf with dark blue head fur. "Oh that feels better" she says as she stretches her limbs, she then looks at me with her head cocked to the side "aren't you going to change?"

With a small grin on my face I shake my head as I begin to increase in size stretching my clothes, which strain a bit but expand with my body (I have a really good tailor), when I hit the 7 foot mark, my fur begins to spread across my body as my bones pop as they reshape themselves into a more comfortable form. After a couple minutes I am back to normal, fur, ears, and tail all where they belong. I look at Luna, "Happy?" "Yeah, you look much better. Wish you would tell me how you get your clothes to change with you though, I hate having to carry around a spare set all the time" "Now, now, I can't tell you all my secrets now can I?" Luna crosses her arms and pouts, "I wish you would...." Smiling I start walking past her, "Well there are some things you are just not ready for."

We walk along for a few more minutes going over some of Luna's lessons, "....and the four primary elemental magic's are what?" She smiles and responds "That's easy; they're Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water" "Right, but remember, when it comes to magic there is always more to learn and discover, no one knows everything about it" "Not even you?" I chuckle at her question "no not even me...." I stop dead in my tracks when I hear something moving to our left. "LUNA DUCK!" I tackle her to the ground just as a lightning bolt shoots out of the brush and blasts the ground where she was standing just a moment earlier.

I am back on my feet in a second later scanning the brush for our attacker "Luna, stay behind me." I hold out my right hand and the trident on my wrist glows a bright blue and water forms in my palm then begins to stretch out into a rod forming a 10 foot trident, when it is fully formed it turns from water to a brilliant gold with intricate righting along the handle signifying it as a weapon of Atlantis.

I grasp my trident with both hands as I keep the source of the lightning keeping Luna behind me. For a few silent seconds nothing happens and then a second bolt shoots out of the brush straight at my head. I manage to block it with my trident in time and redirect the blast back at its source. I may be immortal, but electricity still hurts.... A LOT. An angry roar comes from the brush quickly followed by the trees shaking and breaking to the side as a 15 foot shadow moves out of the forest. It true form is impossible to tell as it is constantly shifting and moving like smoke. I stare up at the creature "this could be a problem....Luna, when I tell you to I want you to run ok?" I can hear her behind me slowly moving "but Seeker..."

"No buts, you will run"

"...ok"

I shift my trident so that I have all three points pointed at the creature "ok..... LUNA RU...." Before I can get the words out the shadow creature is blasted apart in a burst of flames. I stare where the creature was trying to figure out what happened. "Ok, what is going on?"

Behind me I hear Luna panting, when I turn I see her standing with her paw out stretched and smoking "I wasn't going to let you have all the fun....." she begins to sway and falls forward, I manage to catch her just before she hits the ground unconscious. "You stupid pup, how many times have I told you your not ready for that level of magic."

"I don't know I would say she did rather well."

I turn around to the source of the voice and I'm confronted with a sight that will forever be seared into my memory.....
