#8 of A Thing For Star

Chapter VIII: That's Right - A 3-Parter

I yawned, asking Star if we should get back to class or miss a little more. He considered it for a moment, and started to say "We should probably head back to...", but then someone had come in. It took me a minute to notice because I was lost in thought, but I hurriedly scrambled back into the other stall and exited as nonchalantly as I could. To my luck, he didn't notice me. I got back in math, and the teacher called on me the moment I entered.

"If I have three apples, and Jeremy gave me three more, how many apples do I have in total?"

"Six." I said, rolling my eyes at the basic addition. The class burst into applause, exclaiming I was the second to get it right all day. I didn't really care, but then the teacher threw me candy. I didn't particularly like candy, but I accepted it knowing Star would eat it. I slept through the rest of math. When the bell rang, I woke up and went to my locker to get my backpack (because the last two classes were further up by the lobby and we wouldn't have to walk all the way back), and I ran into Star, and I asked him what he had.

"I have P.E. and technology." He said.

"I have P.E. and art." I replied. "I have Mr. Jadson for P.E. Who do you have?"

"Mr. Frunburr." Star said. I was disappointed that we didn't have the same teacher, but then I remembered he could still get an adjacent locker, and unlike the normal lockers, you keep your P.E. locker until you go on to middle school. But we wouldn't know until after roll and the stretches, so I tried not to think about it.

Sure enough, in no time we went to the locker room to change into our P.E. uniforms. By the time I had gotten dressed (as I had already gotten my locker from last year), to my satisfaction I saw that Star's locker was across from mine. We smiled, relieved, and then after a second I said, "Well, see you in the gym." But then Star grabbed my arm. "What is it?"

He blushed, and then looked around nervously. Then he leaned into my ear and whispered, "I forgot my underwear." I was not expecting this, and I obviously blushed too, as I could see my reflection on the silvery lockers. I paused for a minute, and silently moved our backpacks to form a makeshift wall so nobody would see him.

When I got in the gym, only a few other kids were there, shooting basketballs until the coaches came. I decided to join them, but I didn't get the hang of it and they stopped passing to me. By the time the coaches came, the game was chaotic and nobody really knew what was going on. When the coach blew his whistle, everyone started scrambling to find their classes. My class stayed inside and played kickball. I wasn't particularly even good at sports, or even interested in them at all, so I sat on the bleachers and watched. My mind quickly wandered off to wonder what Star was doing. I had never seen him do sports, aside from when we race to the river, so I had no idea if he was good at what he was doing.

My though train was suddenly interrupted when someone threw a basketball at my head. The coach insisted I go to the nurse even though I kept telling him I was fine. So I reluctantly got a pass and went to the nurse, an uneventful visit. But the line there was longer than one would think, and by the time I got back everyone was in the locker rooms changing. While entering in my locker combination, I knocked down the top backpack to see Star covered in sweat without a shirt on. "What did you do?" I asked, trying hard not to stare or lick my lips.

"We just played some hockey on the court outside." Star said. "I was goalie. We won 6-0." I could tell he was trying to say it modestly, but I could still feel he was trying to impress me. "How about you?"

"I just watched my class play basketball and got hit in the head." I calmly replied, as if it were an everyday occurrence.

"Ouch" Star said.

"Not really" I said. "Say, you want me to put the backpack back up?"

He paused for a moment, and obviously noticed I had started staring and so he said "Nah, I'm good."

"Okay." I said, blushing with a gentle smile on my face. I tried again to not make it obvious I was staring, but once again I failed. My face turned hot pink then, as I haven't seen him naked in complete public yet with other people around. I began to take off my pants, knowing that the bell could ring at any minute now. I saw there was a big buldge in my underwear, and my face turned cherry red. I saw in the corner of my eye that Star was staring at me this time, and not the other way around. I was surprised he wasn't trying to hide it - at all. "Take a picture, it'll last longer." I said playfully.

"Okay!" Star exclaimed, taking out a camera and taking a picture. He was obviously eager that he actually got an opportunity to use it, and we shared a good laugh. But then the bell rang, and we shared a look of discontent as we had lost track of time. We scrambled to change back into our clothes and get into our final class. I barely made it before the late bell, but Star was not as lucky since his class was further away. I remembered that at the start of the day they said that 3 in-day tardies was a detention, and I was unsure if he was late to both of his other classes.

Then, once again, my train of thoughts was interrupted. This time not by a flying kickball (in art class), but by the fire alarm. I remembered at how in previous years the routine fire drill was the first of every month, I realized either someone had mistakenly pulled the fire alarm - or that there was a real fire. When we were outside, I was relieved to see that there was no fire. Many kids got lost with different teachers, so someone had to go back and get some loudspeakers to control everyone. When we finally got back to class and calmed down, there was 15 minutes left, and after roll call, the announcements came on. Amiss the confusion, they decided to end school a little early today.

I was relieved when Star and I met up on the bus, where he explained he was late to his two other classes, so he pulled the fire alarm before they could take roll and mark him absent. I wasn't sure if he was brave or stupid enough to do that, so I just smiled enjoyed his company. I quickly realized that since we were the first stop to be picked up on the morning route; we would be last on the afternoon route. I told him, and he frowned and said "Bummer."

"Say, since we're the last stop anyway, can I sleep on you until we're there?" I asked.

Star didn't even need to think about it, as if he had rehearsed it in his head, and said "Sweet dreams, my little moon."
