It's a chilly March night as the half moon hangs in the sky over a main street that seems abandoned. This is Goldston, Colorado. A small city fifty miles east of Denver, that had been, until recently, been barely a blip on the radar. A lone page of newspaper flutters in the stiff breeze and catches on a flickering light pole covered in webbing. Turning the wheel hard he spins around in the road and drops the transmission into third. Dust scatters to the wind as he puts the pedal down and the jeep leaps forward into the night.
In the mirror he watches the alley fill with a white cream and gulps. Another close encounter. Another narrow escape. "I can't keep this up, I'm only a scientist not an action movie star." And yet, he adds, that's probably why I'm still human.
Afterthoughts
