#35 of An Evertech Tale

Nice nice nice, this story is so nice isn't it? Part of the stocking stuffers event run by Terinas Tiger! Honestly this is one of the sadder chapters... Splicer needs a break...

Faster "Seriously... I will give you seventy million to piss off right now." Splicer wasn't sure why he was so angry but something about today pissed him off more than most. He just wanted to keep running on the treadmill until he passed out of the floor and slept the day away.

Faster, why am I so on edge?

_ _

_ _ "Don't you know what day it is?" Aurich was surprised, he had no idea why the wolf was in such a tizzy today, he figured the wolf would be happier on his birthday.

"Another Saturday, what are you here to fuck me again, is that it?" Splicer didn't know what day it actually was, he just let all the days blend together without asking for the date or time from his nanites.

"It's a Thursday, actually but no, it's actually... you know what, never mind, enjoy your run. I'll take a check for that seventy mil~"

"I said right now, but you're still here talking to me..."

"Just for that I wont fuck you on my next unlocking day, just for being so mean to me."

Aurich made a fake pouty face before walking out of the home gym leaving the wolf alone with his thoughts and the screaming treadmill.

Damn, maybe that was a little harsh. Should I apologize? No, why should I care? Why should I care about any of this? Splicer stopped in place, turning around and letting the momentum fling him off the treadmill, coming to a running stop on the other side of the room. He took a quick shower and passed by Callahan in the hall, who looked at the fuming wolf.

"Hey... pup, grocery run. I'm too busy to go so I'll have the car ready out front, you can go alone." Splicer's ears perked up at the offer, it had been years since he was allowed to drive a car himself.

...

He was in the car, the driver's side was red boxed, he growled as it drove down the street without anyone at the wheel, remotely operated by Callahan. Splicer looked out the dark tinted windows, before just reclining his seat all the way back.

Autonomy, agency? Splicer almost felt like he forgot what those words meant. Something felt off to the wolf again, whenever he was brought out grocery shopping, they always went to the same store. No exception, and that store was a fifteen minute drive, the car had been driving for thirty. He sat up in his seat, looking around, every building seemed unfamiliar.

The car pulled up to a building, large, black tinted windows.

Guess I ran my mouth off a little too much, oh well. Wait, was Aurich trying to tell me I was being sold this morning? Splicer was struggling to understand what was happening but that building screamed Evertech. The red barrier was still blocking the driver side, but he looked over to the passenger window with a gulp. He raised his elbow and jammed it against the glass as hard as he could, radiating pain shot up to his shoulder as he looked at the window in shock.

Bullet proof? Seriously? Just his luck that the car would be reinforced in everyway possible, he tried his window control, obviously it didn't work. He peered over to the control panel on the driver side door through the red. He shut his eyes hard, took a deep breath and pushed his paw through the barrier.

Pain... He couldn't even think of anything to describe the feeling of trying to pass through the barrier, it was like the very manifestation of pain. He kept pushing forward through the barrier, his entire arm was nearly through as he screamed as loud as he possibly could. If anyone on the street was around his crying would be heard through the sound proofed car. He placed his other paw in his muzzle and clamped down, hoping somehow one pain could balance out another. He felt electricity coursing through his mouth, his eyes lit bright and he used the adrenaline surge to slam his paw down on the window control, lowering his passenger window. He ripped his arm back through the barrier, inspecting it for damages. It was perfectly normal, his other paw though was pretty chewed up.

What's a bit of blood to someone soon to be processed anyways? Splicer took the moment to jump out the open window, his plan would probably be figured out soon and he hoped he could make at least some distance and form a plan of some sort. He was nursing his paw for every drop of energy he could and putting his treadmill training to work when he finally felt it all fading away, his energy reserves were being depleted and he came to rest at a lamppost only a few hundred meters from the building.

I just, need a minute... Then I can be back on my feet. He was sitting against the lamp post trying to catch his breath when two familiar figures came into view, running down the street.

"Splicer? What the fuck are you doing?" Jack was running towards the wolf, hoping to figure out why he was trying to run away. "Are you bleeding?"

"I'm fine... Don't touch me! Jack..." Splicer slapped the beagle's hand away. "Can't believe they'd have you bring me in for the processing, that's just fucked up."

"Processing? Splicer I don't..." The realization slapped Jack across the face. I suppose a pet being escorted by remote car to an unmarked Evertech owned building is a pretty ominous omen. Jack thought he'd just have Splicer driven over to the building he was currently teaching a class in, but he never thought to consider what that kind of action would look like to a pet. "I just wanted to take you out for a drink mate, it's your birthday..."

Splicer's heart sank, he hated his birthday.

...

"And so then I said, oh they'll fix that broken arm of yours up good at the processing plant!" Jack recounted the tale of his last successful mission to the wolf hoping to lighten the mood, it didn't. Jack was driving the car now, with Blaine silent in the back seat, Splicer was looking out the passenger window he had crawled out of just minutes before.

"You know Jack... I really thought you'd hate this kind of thing. I mean, how couldn't you? Just look at Blaine, and you've done that to how many furs?"

"Jesus, Splicer, it's not like you gave me much choice in the matter when you ensnared me into joining them after all. Most of 'em deserve it anyways..." Pain flashed across Jack's face as he looked in the rear view at his fox. He had lost count of how many, he refused to keep count or else he'd have given up after the first. But he had to keep going, if for no one else that getting Blaine back, maybe if he kept climbing the ranks he could get to Joseph and force him to fix Blaine, even if he had to chip a few teeth on the otter he'd have Blaine back, then the two of them could figure out Splicer.

"Yeah, because I turned out so well because of that choice, could have just let you keep on with your hero fantasies you always have and end up processed too."

"Splicer, can we not do this right now? We've both given up so much, I asked to go out for drinks with you so we could play pretend like nothing is wrong, just for a night."

"Sorry, sorry, it's just been a lot, the whole move from the facility and, there's so many new people in that place. It's just all so, overwhelming..."

"I feel you there puppy..."

...

The three of them were crowded around a single table in an empty bar. The naked server came to their table and warmly greeted the beagle.

"Hello, sir! Treating your pets to a night out?" The bunny server saw two sets of eyes staring daggers that caused their heart to beat faster. "I'm... sorry if I've offended you, can I get you all some drinks?"

Splicer was sipping his drink, Jack was as well, Blaine was just staring at it.

"Please, Blainey, that's your favourite drink..." Old Blaine would never turn down any drink, but Jack recalled a time when Blaine took on three furs at once with one paw occupied because they couldn't risk losing sight of their daquiri.

"I see sir, I don't recall, but if you say that's true it must be. Thank you very much." Blaine lifted the drink to his lips, the taste was familiar and sweet, but he was confused by the way his owner was always acting. The beagle would always force such expensive foods and clothes onto the fox, but product didn't deserve such luxuries, and the beagle would always follow the gifts up with, the questions. Don't you remember this Blaine? Blaine, are you remembering anything? Blaine didn't remember anything, no matter how much he tried to look and remember for his owner, he couldn't. He wished he could go back to being treated like a proper object, like his old owner did. But still, something about the three of them all sitting there gave an odd sense of nostalgia to the fox.

"Hey, Blaine, how's the flight sims going?" Splicer leaned over trying to poke at the fox to see if any sort of progress had been made.

"The flight sims have been good! The seem to only be the most extreme cases, but I like a challenge when it comes to flying!" Blaine was excited, Splicer had to wonder if it was some of his old self poking through or just that Joseph allowed him to keep a small sense of pride when flying. Perhaps it's like the other wolf back at the tailor shop, Splicer took a sip, that ferret, Johnathan? Splicer wondered how long it'd been since he was there, maybe he could get a new suit, the white one was nice but he could use one that stood out a little less. They sat in silence, they couldn't really find much to talk about. Something Jack said earlier stood out to Splicer.

"Wait how many places did you break their arm in?" Splicer saw Jack smile as he took another sip.

...

They had finished off a bottle each, Jack was actually drunk, even Blaine was looking a little unsteady. Splicer excused himself from the table and looked in the mirror.

Why aren't I wasted right now? Splicer checked his eyes in the mirror, he felt barely buzzed, lightly tipsy at best despite drinking enough to put any normal fur into a coma. The badger's smug face flashed into his mind, was he not even allowed to decide when he wanted to get drunk or not? He spat into the sink and washed his paws.

There has to be a limit to how fast the nanites can process liquor. Splicer's cogs were turning. He walked over to the bunny bartender.

"Give me your cheapest bottle of vodka..." The bunny looked apprehensive but Splicer's cold stare and flashing his black card, the bunny hopped away without a word and pawed it over. Splicer walked back to the bathroom, he needed privacy for what he was about to do. He chuckled to himself.

Bottoms up... literally.

_ _

...

Splicer staggered out of the bathroom, the empty bottle in his paw being gripped tenuously as best. He slammed it on the table, Jack was looking at him with a concerned look.

"Oh fuck off with that Jack, I'm fine..." Splicer was feeling it, but he was still coherent and he didn't need some company lap dog pity right now.

"Alright buddy, so where was I? OH YEAH! So there I was in the middle of the jungle, when the guy nearly threw me right onto those punji sticks..."

...

Jack was in the driver's seat, but Callahan read his blood alcohol content and restricted all control from inside the car, on everything, none of the furs in the car were currently eligible to drive, which was worrying, considering Splicer's nanites were supposed to regulate his blood alcohol content to keep it limited. He looked at the data with mild concern.

"Everything alright Cal?" Joven asked, putting his hand on his husband's thigh.

"Y-yeah it's fine, sorry is it my turn?" Callahan could just let the car drive itself, they were midway through Zave's weekly dungeons and dragons session and he really didn't want to break the flow talking about the puppy.

"Yes, hurry up and heal me please... it's not looking good"

...

Splicer was stumbling up the driveway, Jack was trying to help the wolf the whole way but he shrugged the beagle's arm off everytime, he was fine. He opened the door, he didn't see anyone there. He went to the kitchen, he wanted to talk to Aurich. Jack stood there with Blaine, watching the wolf stagger off down the hall, not wanting to be too much a bother, he knew the wolf didn't want his shoulder to cry on.

Splicer wandered into the kitchen, it was late but the skunk would usually be around at this time, but the kitchen was dark. He walked over to the wine fridge and picked the first bottle he found, if Laguna wanted to charge him for it later it didn't matter.

Guess Aur turned in early, maybe Zave wants to play some games? Splicer popped the cork using only his claw, he wandered off to the library. Also dark.

"Hellooooooooo? Zave, I'm hear to kick your tail at furs of waaaaaaaaaar... Zave?" He sat down in one of the middle chairs, drinking straight from the bottle waiting for Zave to show up, they never did.

The bottle was empty, it was all pointless. Splicer threw himself up from the chair, he could just sleep all this off, why did he want to be hanging out with some pets in any case. As he passed the main entryway, he heard Joven's loud roar.

"FUCK! NO!"

It sounded urgent, even in his drunken state he quickly ran to the source, a room off to the side of the main living room, he opened it and stood in the doorway in shock.

Dakota, Aurich, Laguna, Joven, Nate and Callahan were all grouped around a circular table as Zave was shouting in excitement.

"Your last desperate fireball missed, the loss of blood making your vision so blurry that you can't even see your own paw in front of your face, you're about to pass out from blood loss, roll for CON... and pray..."

Why are they all so happy? Splicer watched them all so wrapped up in the raccoon's story they never heard the empty bottle hitting the floor from his paw.

How can they be happy? HOW? He was shivering, Joven breathed a sigh of relief, they must have hit a saving throw.

WHY AM I SO JEALOUS? Why can't I just be...happy? Splicer backed away from the doorway, closing it behind himself.

Splicer was walking down the hall, he didn't know why he was crying, he didn't care about seeing them all happy, he didn't want to be a part of anything they were doing together, he wasn't one of them after all. They were pets, Splicer was only a pet in name, he couldn't let himself get attached, he was trying to justify why he was crying to himself.

You're just drunk... Splicer knew it was because he wanted to be part of that table, part of that group. But he couldn't just join in, no matter how much he wanted to, it wouldn't be right. He placed a paw on his door, two familiar faces were standing inside.

"Love what you've done with the place... is that camera always running?" Jack asked, curious to the answer.

"Get out of my room Jack... how'd you even find this place?" Splicer really wasn't in the mood for company. He began to run himself a bath.

"I just had to ask my nanites and the showed me the mansion layout with your room highlighted."

"Cool, everyone gets to have unrestricted access to their magical robots but me I suppose..." Splicer laid his head back, resting it on the edge of the tub.

"You're a bad drunk Splicer..."

"Tell me something I don't know Jack..."

Splicer felt someone sliding into the tub on the opposite end, it was so large that they were still so far apart their feet couldn't even touch.

"Hope you don't mind."

"Do whatever Jack, just don't be all weird about it."

"Truth be told, I came here to fuck you, but when I saw you crying, I just can't, not tonight."

"I knew that the moment I walked in the door Jack..."

The two bathed together in silence, Blaine joined in on Jack's request as the beagle set about washing the fox's body, Splicer kept a large margin from the intimate display, opting to just get out of the bath entirely and drying off.

"Shit, sorry Splicer... It's just a force of habit." Jack didn't even think about how the wolf would feel about seeing someone caringly washing another fur, in their bath no less. He really had to start looking at things from the wolf's perspective, he saw the loneliness written across their face.

"Do whatever Jack..." Splicer couldn't watch, he just laid in bed and faced the wall.

Why, why does every fur have someone? Why every fur, but me? Am I the issue? Do I have to change? But, I never asked for this, for any of this...

_ _

_ _ Splicer felt someone entering his crate and snuggling up close.

"Jack, I said I wasn't going to fuck you tonight..." He went to pull the arm wrapping him tight off and realized it was an amber orange colour. He was little spoon to a product. Despite how absolutely belittling it was, it felt so good to be held, even if it was a forceful order from their owner. Splicer grabbed the paw and wrapped it tighter, he felt the tears start again.

Two broken products, just broken beyond belief... Splicer felt his eyes close, trying to shrug off the exact regret and longing he still felt, he wondered if the session was finished or if the group would continue long off into the night.

...

Hours passed as the group continued on, eventually drawing off to an end, until the next session.

"Hey, who left this wine bottle here?" Aurich asked picking it up and looking in it, empty.

"Dunno, none of you left mid session did you?" Zave said, not quite recalling the whole thing, whenever he was DM he almost felt like he let another side of himself take over as he maneuvered his holographic monster figures around the table.

Laguna didn't say much of anything as he took the bottle, he also read the wolf's level of inebriation but didn't want to interrupt the session either, he actually had a view of the doorway when the wolf entered and left crying without a word. He turned the bottle in his hand, why did the puppy always have to be such a handful all the time. One second seemingly content, the next ready to run off to cry in a corner or ready to bite someone's head off. He just wanted to know what the pup's hang up was, maybe he could do something for them, but all he knew was Splicer for what it was worth, still intended to pay off his debt and leave one day. Laguna looked up at Nate who looked near tears themselves, did they know something he didn't?, he was content to let the otter come to him to talk about that if or when they felt like it. All the other pets were looking to Laguna for an answer, he didn't have much of one.

"Everyone wish the puppy happy birthday, or something, maybe tomorrow..." Laguna said, Splicer has stayed out too late, and their game had dragged on far too long, it was already well beyond midnight. The group dispersed, Laguna checked the camera feed of the wolf's room, there were three sleeping bodies inside the wolf's crate with room still to spare, he decided to leave it as is before heading off for his own room...
