The Nisse Scheme
Gimmy, Vig, Joki, and Cham, all stare down at Canute in his bed.
Gimmy is the first to speak. "The man's left us a bowl of porridge with double-butter every day for a year now." He proclaims
VIg follows. "We need to get him something." He decides
Cham and Joki look to each other in their red little caps and mouse-sized blue tunics.
Cham goes first. "Well, there's that Estrith girl who seems darn near obsessed with him and he seems to like her so." Cham suggests.
Joki tails Cham. "But that Krystanya girl is much the same, loves him bad and he does her too." He counters.
Gimmy and Vig turn to each other. Gimmy slams his tiny fist into his tiny hand. Vig's frustrated look turns to elation. "We can fix this problem!" Gimmy and Vig exclaim.
Realizing they've shouted they turn to Canute in his bed to see if he's woke. Nope. All clear.
Cham and Joki turn to each other. "We'll make three rings." The two announce.
Gimmy follows "Today is our only day to prepare since he'll be so busy working with the merchants, so Vig we need to work on setting situations." Gimmy proclaims.
"Then let's waste no time, his porridge is good" Vig says, dragging his brother towards their house within a house making all the noise of a dozen mice dancing around a mousy-may-pole.
On and off throughout the day Gimmy and Vig check up on the household, Jan and Mrs. Koborg talking like those with white hair do. Estrith and Krystanya offering help and asking for lessons and information about Canute wherever they can, and Canute running around like a squirrel in his cheese barns hauling hundred-pound wheels of cheese down and around from sunup to well after sunset. When Canute does return inside, he skips dinner, eats a wedge of cheese the length of his arm, downs a mug of cider strips down to the nude in the middle of the living room and goes to bed much to the horror of Mrs. Koborg, the laughter of Jan, and the euphoria of Estrith, Krystanya, and even the great interest of Lieddi.
That night the four nisse brothers reconvene their bellies full of another day's worth of porridge and butter. Cham and Joki have with them three rings, silver with masterful and ornate patterns within them etched in gold. One with the Estrith Koborg engraved on the inside, the other with Krystanya Koborg, and the last with Lieddi Koborg.
"So, what did Gimmy and you come up with?" whispers Cham to Vig
"And what did you and Vig reason out? Joki asks Gimmy
Gimmy and Vig step back from the younger of the two sets of twins.
"Gimmy and I-" Vig proclaims
"Vig and I-" Follows Gimmy.
"Have decided that we need to get Canute, Estrith, Krystanya, and that Lieddi realize that they are meant to be, because we spent the day taking, watching, and casting magic to bind them all to Canute, and Canute to them, now we have to make them, and that Father Ulf, realize it" They say simultaneously.
"So Vig thinks we need them to have as much skinship with Canute as possible!" Gimmy laughs
"And Gimmy thinks they need to be awkward together." Vig follows.
"Aside from the usual things to get a man and woman's love. Remember Balli fellow and how he loved to eat, and Edela who loved to cook and be praised? Stuff like that." Vig and Gimmy announce, simultaneously.
Cham and Joki nod and the four nisse brothers return to their home within a home. The four barely sleep so excited to see how this plan to not only settle their debt but also have fun in general works out
