Chapter One

"Awakenings"

By

Furry Sith Lord

He woke suddenly with a start and wondered what time it was. A sudden fear that he had not heard his alarm clock go off filled him and he jumped to sit up in his bed and turned to look at where he normally kept his alarm clock.

It took a moment for his eyes to adjust and it was only then that he realized his blanket was missing. He looked around and saw that his room was trashed! The walls had burn marks on them. There was trash and other debris scattered around. His bed looked as if it had been set on fire.

He normally kept his room neat and clean otherwise his mother would get on his case. Everything, except for the remains of his bed, was gone. Even his clothes were missing and although he still wore his underwear he had climbed into bed with last night, everything was now gone.

He tried laying back down hoping this was a dream but he felt an edge of a spring from the mattress stick into his back. He jumped up and looked around to see if there was anything he could put on. Normally, walking around in his boxers would not bother him but with everything missing he suddenly felt as if he was naked.

"Mom? Dad?" He called out hoping they would answer him. Maybe they could tell him what happened and why everything was suddenly gone. Why the place looked abandoned and ravaged.

"Mom!!!" He shouted louder and held his breath as he waited for an answer. Fear began to build up inside as he heard nothing but silence. His mind raced trying tro remember if something happened that he had forgotten.

He remembered that he had argued with his parents when they sent him to bed. He is a typical fourteen year old boy that liked playing video games and suck. He usually got good grades and he had switched to wearing boxers after his friends pressured him and made fun oif the briefs he used to wear.

"Those are like diapers." They would say.

"Why are you dressed like a small boy." they mocked.

"Aww mommy and dada won't let you dress like a big boy?" It did not take him long to complain to his parents that he wanted to wear boxers to fit in with the other boys in school. They agreed to let him change the type of underwear he wanted but they still would not extend his bedtime. Even though today was Saturday they still made him follow a schedule.

He examined the burn marks and wondered if there had been a fire. Why had the alarms not woken him? Why had his parents not gotten him and brought him to safety? It made no sense!

He kept hoping this nightmare would end and he would wake up in his bed in his real house, not this place. He wondered if this was some kind of punishment for complaining about his bedtime. He made a silent promise he'd never complain again if this nightmare would just end already.

He finally decided to venture out of what remained of his room and see if anything else of his home remained. Maybe he could find a clue to what happened. He used his hands to check his head for any bumps or cuts because he remembered learning in school that those are known to cause memory loss. He could not feel anything but the mirrors in his house were either gone or broken so he could not check out his appearance.

He walked down the hall towards the stairs and missed seeing the strange sensor that started to silently glow red as he walked by it. He was more interested in the fact that the rest of the house was in the same condition as his room was. Just about everything had been taken and his mind raced trying to come up with an answer for what happened.

The best he came up with is that some robbers had broken into his house after he went to bed and stole everything of value before destroying the place. He must have been knocked out and that caused his memory loss. He just was not sure what had happened to his parents.

He made his way into the kitchen and felt a pang of hunger but the empty cupboards made him feel worse. The refrigerator, which looked to be a different model that the one he was used to, had the door ripped off and the inside was filthy and smelled like a garbage dump. He wanted to vomit as he got near it.

He continued to search for any scrap of food he could find but found nothing. He jumped as he heard a loud crash from the front door being kicked open.

"Freeze!!!" He heard someone shout and he cautiously stuck his head out of the kitchen to see an overweight man wearing a black uniform and holding a gun. Peter Froze and raised his hands as the man now focussed the gun on him. A taller slender man stepped up behind the overweight one and he had his handgun trained as he looked around.

Peter guessed they were police but their uniforms were not the typical blue gray colors that cops usually wear.

"Come out over here." The overweight one ordered and Peter obeyed as he carefully approached. He was feeling self conscience as he stepped out in only his underwear with the two men staring at him.

"Is there anyone else here?" The slender man asked. Peter shook his head as their weapons lowered slightly. The slender man approached Peter and cuffed his hands behind his back and then he was made to sit on the floor.

"I'll keep an eye on him check out the rest of the place." The overweight cop said the slender kept his weapon pointed in front of him as he went to search the rest of the house's remains.

"Who are you?" The overweight cop asked.

"I'm Peter, I live here."

"Don't lie to me!" The overweight cop shouted. "No one would be stupid enough to li e out here. Now I'll ask you again and you better not lie to me, why are you here?"

"Please, I don't know what's going on. Last night I went tro bed and I woke up here!" Peter pleaded and the officer stared at him as if trying to determine if he was telling the truth or lying.

"The place is clear." The slender cop replied as he returned and he put his gun back in his holster. "You get anything?"

"The kid claims to be living here. Won't tell what's really going on."

"Don't give us any bullshit kid, we're in no mood. You tell us who you're working for and things will go easier than if you lie. You know what we do to liars." The slender cop said.

"Where are your clothes and gear? Where'd you ditch them?" The overweight cop asked.

"I have no idea what's going on. Are my parents punishing me for not wanting to go to bed on time?" Peter stammered as he tried to explain.

"What?!" The slender cop said. The overweight cop turned to look at his partner as they tried sorting the whole mess out.

"I'll call this in, you keep an eye on the punk." The overweight cop said as he left to return to the cruiser.

"Listen kid, you seem nice but you're in serious trouble. If you don't open up you'll be sent to a reeducation center. You don't want that, do you?" The slender cop asked him while changing his tone to sound as if he was friendlier than he actually was.

Peter had no idea what a reeducation center was and wondered if it was another name for a Juvenile Detention Center. He knew what a "juvie" was; everyone knew they were prisons for minors. He just didn't understand what law he broke that they were threatening to send him to one.

The overweight officer entered holding a blanket and he walked over and wrapped it around Peter.

"It's all set. This is your last chance to cooperate, kid. Tell us why you're here or you go downtown. You know what happens then." Peter knew what would happen but he still couldn't think of a single law he broke. He was hoping that they'd call his parents and maybe then he could learn what happened.

They took his silence as him not cooperating and they led him out to their squad car. Peter was struck that the car was not labeled as being the city's name. The car read Dome City Crime Prevention. He had no idea what Dome City was and he wondered if he was in a new city.

They placed him in the back seat and closed the door. Peter felt chilly as the blanket fell from his shoulders but because of the handcuffs he could not wrap himself up in it again. The car drove off and he looked out the window at what remained of the neighborhood.

The house, that he thought was his, was one of only a few that remained standing. Most looked as if they had been burned down and everything around them was completely wrecked. There were a few images that looked like the outlines of people with burn marks around them showing that they were people.

"My god, what the hell happened?" Peter muttered to himself as he leaned in close to look out the window. The slender cop that was riding in the passenger seat up front and he turned quickly to stare at Peter. He had a confused look on his face as he stared. The overweight cop turned slightly but had to stay focussed on his driving.

"Jorge, you think there's something wrong with him?"

"Seriously?! Of course he is Sean! What kinda idiot goes out of the dome in only his panties? We probably have to treat him for radiation sickness, the damn fool." Jorge replied and Peter sat up straight as he listened. What was this talk about radiation poisoning? What the hell was going on???

Peter watched in horror as they drove towards a large city that was inside a glass dome. It reminded him of a snow globe just waiting to be shook up to make it snow inside. He had a feeling in the pit of his stomach telling him that the whole place was about to be shaken up...
