Once outside and back on the road heading for Sphinx's place "Well I guess you were right the pub wasn't the best place to start with. So you just want to go home or do you to try again somewhere else" Rourke was thinking that Sphinx would elect to head straight home, but what Sphinx said was surprising, as he stared out the side window "How about we head to the mall sure there will be more people there yes but they're not going to be drunk like they were over at that bar"

"You sure about this buddy"

"Yeah I'm sure, I can't let one near death experience stop me from re-entering this world as I am" just then something that Sphinx had been forcing deep into the back of his mind took its chance at this lapse in concentration and leapt forward into the active part of his mind, it was Nikki, he hadn't thought about her since he called her and told her that they couldn't be together anymore due to unforeseen circumstances, "No on second thoughts lets skip the mall and call around to Nikki's, I want to go see how she's been taking the break up"

"What you broke up with her!"

"I had to, I couldn't really let her see me like this, and I don't think she would have understood why I would have needed some time alone, so I did the most logical thing I could think of at the time, I broke up with her, I think she took it well, but I'm just not sure that's why I want to see her, that's why I have to see her, to see how well she took it and if she would maybe like to pick things up were we left off"

"Ok man its your day, I'll go where you go to back you up"

"Thanks man"

It took them half an hour to get to Nikki's place, Rourke pulled up out front revved the engine to try and get some reaction from inside the house to see if anyone was home. There was a rumbling of the curtains in the lounge room and the front door suddenly swung open and Nikki came rushing out dressed in what looked to be a dressing gown, but up close it was really a long flowing dress, which Sphinx recognized as one of the ones he had bought her for one of their anniversaries. She ran up to the car and knocked on the driver side window to get Rourke to wind it down she look like she had been crying for a month, her eyes where puffy and bloodshot and she looked as though she was about to burst into tears again "Rourke I am so glad your here I need to know happened to Sphinx I haven't been able to reach him on his phone I keep getting an engaged tone whenever I tried to call him and I haven't got any of my e-mails back, I haven't been able to get a good night sleep since he called and told me that we had to be apart"

Rourke shot Sphinx a disgusted glare and turned back to Nikki "Wo slow down there your speaking way too fast all I heard was Rourke, Sphinx, call and be apart, now clam down and say it again"

"Sorry it just that I'm so worried about Sphinx he sounded so different on the phone..."

"What you could tell that he sounded different over the phone?"

"Yes we were dating for five years stupid and after five years you tend to pick up on things like that, so can you tell me whether or not he's alright?"

"Well I guess it all depends on your point of view, to me apart from a few differences, he's fine just fine, but to others he's, well with lack of better words, completely fucked up"

Her hands shot to her mouth in shock, "oh my god what happened tell me, oh god please tell me"

"Why don't you ask him yourself?"

She looked confused, and after Rourke elbowed him in the ribs, Sphinx opened up the passenger side door and stepped out, at first she didn't know who or what it was, but when the creature turned to face her, she recognized him instantly even through the fur that cover his face she knew it was him, she ran around the front of the car and into his chest, it was much bigger than she remembered, but she didn't care as long as she had hold of him once more she was never going to let him go again, tears of happiness and sadness started streaming down the side of her face, "Who did this to you and how did they do it to you?"

"You really don't want hear the answer to that"

"Yes I do, I want to know, I love you and I know that you still love me don't you"

"Yes I do I still love you too, very deeply, but lets head inside so we can sit down talk"

Sphinx headed into the house with Nikki still clutched around his chest while Rourke was let behind to close and lock the car then followed them inside. Nikki's house wasn't much bigger than Sphinx's, but oh how it bought back memories, so many good memories of many long nights together spent and then his daydream was suddenly and painfully shattered by a head splitting pain, for he had just walked into a low door frame and fell over bending the anchor point of his tail back further then it should and he heard a faint pop and felt a large amount of pain coming from that area and he roared out in pain again for the second time in one day, both Nikki and Rourke came running in from wherever they were in the house, Rourke had obviously been in the toilet, for he was trying to do up his fly on the run and Nikki came rushing out of the adjacent room which was the kitchen if his memory served him correctly. Nikki ran over to him and rolled him over on to his side, which hurt him a little bit, "What happen?"

"I'm not sure I think I was daydreaming and hit my head on the door frame and fell backwards and I think I may have dislocated my tail"

"Your tail?" she had been so happy to finally see him after almost two months she had forgotten about what had happened to him she stepped back in shocked disbelief this can't be true who could such as thing, who would have the knowledge or technology to do something like this she looked him over as he tried to stand up, "Hey you want to take a look at my tail please and tell me if it is dislocated thanks, sweet heart"

Snapping out her trance "Ugh what oh sure honey"

"Oh someone gag me" sighed Rourke with a slight note of sarcasm in his voice, they both ignored him, Nikki stepped around Sphinx who was kneeing unable to stand up any higher because of the pain in both his head and his butt.

"Um I yeah think you have dislocate it babe"

"Oh great, you think you could pop it back in for me"

"I'll give it a try I haven't had to do this in a while" she softly grabbed hold of his limp tail near the base and give it hard yank, it popped back into place along with another large surge of pain which caused him roar out in pain yet again "God dammit I hate having to put up with this cursed thing, Nikki you still have that knife set I got you for Christmas last year"

"Yes why?"

"Good, where is it I'm going to get rid of this thing"

Realizing what he was saying she called after him "What, no you can't?"

"I can and I bloody well will, now out of my way this needs to be done" he pushed past her with pure determination in his eyes. He wanted to get rid of his tail and he didn't care that he was about to mutilate himself in the process. He just wanted it gone, but he was stopped half way to the kitchen by Rourke spear tackling him to the ground "I'm sorry friend, but I can't let you do that to yourself" it worked at first, but as they fell to the ground Rourke's grip loosened and Sphinx took his chance, he curled his tail around Rourke's head, blinding him so he was unable maintain his grip and let go of Sphinx and he was jolted from his trance by Nikki screaming "Sphinx please stop" looking over to her she had a look of pure fear in her eyes, he looked back at what he was doing and realized why, he had his fist held high ready to hit something, but it was not a something, but a someone. Rourke, he was about to punch Rourke, his best friend, in the face while his head was still wrapped in his tail, he put his fist down and try to get his tail to unfurl from around Rourke's head, but it didn't so he had to unwind it himself.

Once released from his tail Rourke gasped for air "What the hell has gotten in to you man?"

"I don't know, I seriously don't fucking know, its like my normal behavioral patterns are being overwritten with animal ones"

"While we're on that topic you think we could go into the lounge room so you can explain to me what exactly happen to you"

"Um sure hun" They headed into the lounge room, Sphinx this time making sure to duck under the door frames so he didn't hit his already extremely sore head again. Nikki's lounge room was bigger then his, he sat on the lounge with Nikki sitting at the opposite end still a little bit fearful of her ex-boy friend and with just reason, while Rourke just plonked down into one the two arm chairs, some what exhausted, "So?"

"So were do you want me to start"

"Start from the start"

"Ok then it all started twelve months ago, as you know I was a researcher at the Royal Brisbane hospital, but I was never allowed to reveal anything about what I was working on, well I think the time has come for me to tell you. I had been working on a experimental method of which to treat genetic diseases using animal gene therapy well at least that's what I was told I was working on, we were getting to the final stages of the animal tests and results had been impressive, but the only way the board would allow us to continue testing over onto human trials was to volunteer members of the research team and because I had truly believed in the treatment, I was the first to volunteer, there were four of us and as far as I know I'm the only who came out looking like this, but I'm just not sure I haven't been in contact with anyone from the test lab, but anyway the operation itself went by with out a hitch, but it all started to go down hill in the post-op. I had been out for three days and when I came to the whole ward was cleared out no one came in not even when I pushed the call button. There weren't any mirrors in the ward and the fur at that point in time hadn't spread as far as to cover my arms or legs just my face and back and my hair had completely fallen out and was starting to grow back, it was already about two inches long and that tail had started to form and that was painful, but one night while I was screaming out in pain in my sleep and they came in attached a IV painkiller bag to the other three bags they already had attached to my IV drip, it help out a lot, but towards the end of my stay the pain was starting to over come the painkillers, but luckily most of the disfigurement was past they had done what they could without doing invasive surgery to try and correct it, I kind of wish they had, so they released me about three days after they were sure the transformation was over they told me not to go outside for a couple of months so they could try and figure out some way to either make so I could go around as I am without people noticing or change me back and also that I shouldn't have any trouble as long as I stay inside, I kinda guess they were right," He told her about the incident at the bar and she moved over and hugged him caringly. "They thought at first I would need leg braces, but during one the few days I was able to move without collapsing I got up and started to walk around the ward I even tried the door to ward, but they had it locked I was guessing they did it for my own good so I didn't expose myself to soon, they had to sneak me out through the morgue so I could get home and then I call you and everyone else I knew and told them basically the same thing and then I disconnected my phone, pulled the battery from my mobile and disconnected my net, that's why you couldn't get a hold of me. So anyway, for the first week of my return home I was shaving my whole body I really didn't like having the fur, but I was wasting too much money trying to keep it gone. It was just growing back to fast for me to keep buying razors and shaving cream and electric razors just clogged up, so I stopped shaving and now this is how I look, so what do you think"

"What do I think? Well can I say one thing?"

"What that?"

"Take your shirt off?"

"What um why?"

"I want to see what lies under you shirt now"

"Um ok then" he stood up and began to take his shirt off.

"I'll give you two some alone time shall I" and Rourke got up and walk out into the kitchen to get something to eat and to watch the TV in the dinning room and as he made his exit he heard something hit the floor in the lounge room, he pushed away any and all ideas he got about what that sound could be by turning on the TV set. The sound was Sphinx and Nikki hit the floor, as she tackled him while he was try to take off his shirt.

"Ow what you do that for"

"Ooh you're so soft and warm I could cuddle you all day"

"Will I kinda doubt that but ok"

"You don't molt do you?"

"Um I'm not really sure, I've never really noticed, why that doesn't worry you does it"

"Kind of, but not really, it's just going to make more work for me if you're going to be spending more time over here"

"Who said I was going to be spending more time over here"

"Well it's just that we've been to together for five years and I was think..."Sphinx put one of his furry fingers to her lips to silence her.

"First of all we broke up two months ago and second if you're suggesting that we move in together I would love to, but which one of us is going to sell our house"

"Well I was hoping we could get back together no one has ever loved me like you do"

"I was hopping you would say that and I would love to get back together again I only broke up with you because I wasn't sure if you would be able handle what has happened to me but obviously I was wrong so very, very wrong, but lets put that behind us shall we"

"Yes you were" with a sight giggle in her voice, "but as to who will be sell their house I think it should be you this place is closer to your work and the center of town as well and it on a bigger block than your place so if we..."she stopped mid sentence what am I thinking I can't ask him if he wants kids I mean he probably still hasn't fully come to terms with what has happened to him and here I am thinking about having kids. We're not even married yet and I'm not even sure if he can or if we should.

"So if we what dear" brushing a loch of her hair from across her face

"Oh never mind it was just wishful thinking"

"What were you thinking about, please tell me"

"Well ok I thinking that if we had kids, my place as a bigger backyard for them to play in"

"You want kids?"

"Yes why do you?"

"Yes I do and I would love to have them with you"

"Is that a proposal?"

"Well I guess if you want it to be it can" at this she squealed and hugged him tighter than she had ever hugged him before "but I don't have a ring"

With tears of absolute happiness in her eyes "It doesn't matter that you don't have a ring, its only got material value, the value of our love can not be priced"

"Your right so do you accept my proposal"

"I do"
