"Something Rises in the Morning"

#7 of Poetry, both old and new

This is a poem that I wrote in Memoriam of my high school friend Shedwain Joseph who passed away on October 11, 2021, due to a fentanyl overdose caused by fake Xanax. Why do legends always have to die so young?

"Something Rises in the Morning"

By Ken Anderson, 11 October 2021

It was moonrise

when I realized,

Something changed me,

Deep inside.

Something heinous,

Something vicious,

Something different,

Something mine.

Can't describe it,

But I can find it,

It's something inside

And I'll hide behind it,

And It's surprised me,

And hypnotized me,

'Cause then it told me,

I'd be alright.

And when I'm mourning

On early mornings

When I must open

my weary eyes,

Something greets me,

And it restores me,

And it reminds me

That I've survived.

I miss you, old friend...
