What do dinosaurs in heat do in the woods when males aren't around? They don't talk about men. That's for certain.

{What do dinosaurs in heat do in the woods when males aren't around? They don't talk about men. That's for certain.}

T heard the footsteps before she caught the scent. The dense underbrush contained thousands of different scents--most of them weeds and other plants humans found repulsive--but none of them masked the heat of another raptor. A light breeze cut through the pollen and brought Z-I's heat straight to her.

T turned and pushed through the underbrush, taller than she was and dense enough she couldn't see in front of her. This part of the metro park had been deliberately allowed to grow wild. Nobody would see them, and humans would not catch a whiff of them. T had been living here for the past two days, and now the others entering heat would join her.

T followed her nose and the sound of rustling underbrush. Spiky weeds and thistles scratched her flanks and muzzle. Thorns tried to break her scales, but her skin was tougher than that. This is where her body was designed to live. Being in her element made her feel alive.

About sixty strides later, another muzzle peeked through the underbrush. A fellow raptor, yellow scales, black stripes around the neck and tail. They bumped snouts, and then T turned around so Z-I could inspect her heat.

[You're full], she said.

No need for human languages. No letters in place of their real names.

[You're filling up the park yourself,] T addressed her by her real name, one that had no pronunciation in any human language.

Z-I then walked up T's flank and took the lead. T inspected her heat in return. Humans would think it was a fox, or a skunk. Their noses were so limited. They could not appreciate this.

T gave it a quick lick, and then Z-I picked up the scent trail T had been on earlier. T followed in her wake, basking in the smell of a fellow raptor nearly in estrus.

The scent took them out of the underbrush and into more sparse forest. T was glad to leave the scratching plants behind and concentrate on the deer.

Their feet made no sound, even as they stepped on dead branches and leaves leftover from the previous autumn. State law required them to make noise when among humans, so this was their chance to use their bodies to their fullest potential.

They hadn't stalked long when they came to the deer. A doe. At least three years old and facing away from them.

Z-I veered left. T circled right.

The doe didn't make a sound as she fell, and she likely didn't know what happened. T had pinned her down. Z-I had her teeth around the deer's neck, twisting.

As Z-I licked her lips, T flexed her killing claw and opened the abdomen. The bouquet spilling out rivaled their heat scents, and T gulped down some small intestine. Z-I concentrated on the thigh muscles, pulling them from the bones and chewing them like a human before swallowing.

They were far away from the walking trails. Far away from the bicycle paths. The females would live here for a few days until their heat was full, mostly for their own benefit. It was one of the few times they were allowed to be dinosaurs, reconnect with their roots, do what their bodies were meant to do. Some states forbade it. Some nations punished it with prison or immediate execution. No tolerance. Humans didn't want to risk unruly dinosaurs. T felt glad she could do this at all, and that the city had parks large enough for it.

As they ate, they heard rustling. Footsteps cracking old branches, a deliberate gesture. T and Z-I turned to face the sound. G was coming through the trees, and someone else was with her. Someone that made both T and Z-I rise from the kill, blood still dripping from their mouths.

Another theropod, thinner and shorter, walked beside G. Not a raptor, but a Gallimimus. Dark scales faded to cream on the underbelly. She had red circles under her eyes.

T recognized her. She hadn't caught her name on the set, but she remembered the makeup sessions.

G called out T's and Z-I's real names. [Mind if we join you?]

Z-I: [Of course not. We are just beginning. Who is your friend?]

The herbivore bobbed from the waist.

T:

The clawless theropod walked against G, flanks touching. [Nice to meet you again.]

The Gallimimus scene in _Jurassic Park. T had heard they came from all over the country just for that.

T huffed. [Your dialogue didn't make it in either.]

By now the newcomers had reached the kill. They stood about five paces away, a respectable distance. G licked the Gallimimus on the snout.

G: [This is A-V. She finally got a permit to be out of state. She's from Alabama.]

T-I: [Oh. Sorry.]

A-V huffed.

G nuzzled her. [She likes mine so much I told her she should come to sample some others. No raptors down there. She never smelled a raptor in heat until we met on the set of Jurassic Park.]

[She's been visiting me every time she goes into heat.]

T's claws flexed. [So that's where you've been. Getting herbivore slit.]

Z-I: [Still some meat to go around. We'll make another kill once the others show up.]

The two newcomers approached the kill. G bent down and tore some meat off the chest and swallowed. T watched the thin dinosaur. She did not seem agitated. Normally it was a breach of etiquette to eat meat in front of a prey species, but A-V seemed more interested in G's heat. She was straining her neck, scenting G's heat as she ate.

T shifted from foot to foot. [Not often a prey species like a raptor's scent.]

[Oh I can't get enough of it! I wanted to visit for a sparring years ago but the permit wouldn't go through.]

G swallowed, backed up, pushing her slit into A-V's muzzle. The herbivore was not discreet licking her deep.

[She's used to predator species. Don't worry about her. In fact, she told me the idea of being surrounded by predators sounded interesting.]

T glanced at Z-I. With a nod of the snout, they agreed.

Z-I veered left.

T circled right.

The thin theropod was too busy licking G's heat to notice.

By the time she did, she was surrounded. Her legs shivered, just a little.

[Well now,] G began. [You're surrounded by raptors in heat. More are on the way. How is it?]

A-V backed away from G's slit and took in the air. She was shuddering.

[Don't you have this?] Z-I said.

[It's not like this for us,] the Gallimimus answered. [I'm weak compared to... all of you.]

T remembered: herd species, so no need to attract a mate from a distance. Heat scent would be weaker. It had been so long since she had met an herbivore.

G spun around clamped her teeth around A-V's neck and eased her to the ground. A-V was still shuddering, but T could smell her arousal. It was weak compared to a raptor's, but noticeable and a little exotic. A-V held G's neck as she went down.

Finally G released her. [Just lie there for a while. Take it all in. Three raptor scents and no way to escape.]

The thin herbivore lay on her back, completely exposed. T stood over A-V. Just her scent washing over her made her shudder. T felt as if she were playing a theremin, able to make A-V react without so much as touching her.

T felt a nose on her slit. She jumped away, claws up. [Oh, no, little dinosaur. If you want to sample the source, you'll have to earn it.]

A-V's tongue fell out.

T looked at G. The other raptor licked her lips.

Z-I croaked in amusement. [We'll be glad to have you here as a guest.]

T: [We'll make this a memorable visit for you.]

A-V panted as she reached down and felt herself. Her slit had become puffier in the short time she had been here.

{Sorry if this feels truncated. I haven't been in a good state of mind to write a story of this type. Perhaps I'll expand it in the future.}
