#16 of Sonic the Hedgehog

Princess Sally Acorn and Antoine D'Coolette have been running missions as Freedom Fighters for years. This time, they are working together and wind up stuck in a cave, but what were the mysterious flowers that Eggman was studying here years ago...?

This is a Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction. I write these set in alternate universes that take place in the future where every character involved is 18+

"Mon Dieu!"

The exclamation is not the cry of a cowardly coyote but the shout of a courageous commando surprised by a terrible attack.

The Freedom Fighters, having come back together for one last hurrah after discovering a hidden Eggman base on a mysterious island, are now at the mercy of an Eggswat battalion emerging from the secret fortress.

Antoine pulls out his sword and cuts down one of the emerging enemies with a single blow. His skill has diminished somewhat in his years out of active service, but the blade still cuts through the steel skin of his foes.

Behind him, Princess Sally Acorn communicates to the rest of her team through a facsimile of Nicole's old computer handheld shell.

"Everyone, find shelter while Tails and Nicole work on hacking the network. We can't get through without knowing what we're dealing with."

She turns toward the soldier and bodyguard, barking out another order. "Antoine, we need to retreat and regroup."

"Oui, mon princess," the guard says, taking the lead, cutting through straggling pawns and badniks that supplement the main swat forces.

Sally, for her part, produces her holographic wrist blades and slices through her own series of automated defense drones. The two fighters become a whirl of blades as oil and machinery spurt and clank onto the ground in a circle at their feet.

The two breathe heavily as they push onward, finally breaking through the rear troops and rushing their way past the uncharted jungles of the mysterious island until they come across a cave.

"Let me take the lead," Antoine says, placing a hand on his chest. "It is my duty, after all, to protect you, mon princess!"

He peers inside, but the mouth prevents any cursory exploration. He reaches into his backpack and breaks open a chemical torch. Its purple glow first illuminates his face, but soon, he raises it up to illumine o the dark corners of the underground passage.

"There is nothing here but some plants," he says. "It should be a good place to be taking the rest, non?"

"That's fine with me," Sally says, following her fellow Freedom Fighter friend into the cave's darkness. "Nicole, any progress?"

There comes no response.

"Typical. The cave might be shielded. What sort of base was this?" She asks, approaching some of the wildflowers blooming in the darkness. "Researching strange flora?"

Antoine pulls out his pack and drapes a camouflage net over the entrance. "Best to be careful around plants that are not plants, Princess. Maybe, this is a krudzu development facility."

"No, I don't think it's that," Sally says, frowning, zooming through her handheld's remote database. "I'll try boosting the signal to see if we can get a distress signal out."

Dirt falls from above as rhythmic thumping hits their ears. Antoine grabs onto his sword, standing up. Both stare at the ceiling, ready and waiting for a fight.

"They are on the move," Antoine whispers. "And there are many of them."

"We aren't going anywhere anytime soon," Sally agrees. "We'd better set up camp."

"Good idea. I shall be preparing the emergency meal for our dining experience tonight. Unfortunately, it shall not be the best cuisine, but the meals ready to be eaten are good in a pinch, non?"

Sally's frown furrows deeper, and Antoine approaches behind her. "Mon princess," he says, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Do not be so worried. Our friends and comrades are stronger than we, oui? The others are competent. They shall push through and come for us when they can."

"It's not that I'm not worried about them," Sally says, "It's that I'm not sure what these plants are. They're an unknown species, and any uncertainty on the battlefield is a danger."

"Tut, tut, tut," Antoine says, squatting before the plant life. "These are but an exquisite example of local wildlife. They are not robotic creations and cannot harm us because we will not eat them." He draws his sword and, with its tip, plays with the petal of one of the closest examples. "See? It is but a flower."

Even after he stops wiggling the petal, the flower continues to quiver. And not just the one he touched, but the one next to it, and then the one next to it. Soon, the entire wall's worth of vine-based floral protuberances dance as if driven to a frenzy.

Antoine stands up, placing himself between Sally and the plants. "Oh, perhaps I was speaking too soon, hehe...?"

"Look out!" Sally shouts.

One of the larger flowers coughs out a powder that glistens in the glow of the chemical torch. Sally pushes Antoine aside, but the heroic Antoine attempts to push her aside at the same time. This has the effect of the two stumbling Freedom Fighters grappling each other as the powder strikes them and coats their fur from their shoulders upward. The powder gets all over their eyes, nose, and mouths. There is no part of them that isn't at least a little bit dusted in the ejaculation.

"Ach, this is, CHOO, the pollen season here?" Antoine wheezes.

"Blech, it's everywhere!" Sally gasps. "It even got in under my clothes!"

"I must look ridiculous!" Antoine says, stepping back and patting his shoulders off.

"This is no laughing matter; that could have really been dangerous. What were you thinking?"

Antoine places his hand on his chest and bows. "I would do anything in the service to my country, even sacrifice my life for our beautiful princess."

Sally bites her lip, but she turns away, wrapping her arms around her chest. "It's been a while since you've complimented me like that, Antoine."

He chuckles. "There is more to complement you and your beauty, from your lips down to your tush."

Sally grabs at her rump, a burning filling up in her face. "That's... highly inappropriate. Antoine, are you feeling alright?"

"A little bit of the sniffles, I admit," he says, pulling out a handkerchief from his belt. He gives his nose a quick blow. "But I have had worse before."
