#48 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo challenges Winona for the Feather Badge and then explores Route 121 on his way to Lilycove City

I eventually reached Fortree City and immediately ducked inside the Pokemon centre where many trainers were gathering together. Turns out the rain had been forcing more and more people inside where they were drying off. That was me as well, while I dried off though, I began deliberating on what Pokemon I would use against Winona. Before that though, I began researching Winona to understand what Pokemon she used and any battle strategies she was known for. Firstly, Winona used three Pokemon, so the battle would be three on three. Secondly, she used Altaria, a Dragon Flying Type, a Pelipper a Water and Flying Type and lastly a Swellow, a Normal and Flying Type. However, lets not forget that her Swellow was actually an alternate colour. That was interesting to know.

In general the Pokemon that I had that were super effective against Flying Types were, Nosepass, Lairon, Manectric, Plusle, Minun, Lunatone, Solrock, Cradily and Armaldo. Lots of the Pokemon that I hadn't mentioned could also be used, however these had the type advantages and were therefore the best choice to battle Winona. Nosepass, may have been a Rock Type, but his moves at the moment didn't have enough power but his defence was impressive. Lairon had even stronger defence than Nosepass and not only that his type would resist Flying moves and Dragon moves as well. Manectric was fast and could deliver powerful Electric moves before Winona's Pokemon could even retaliate. Plusle and Minun were strong, don't get me wrong, but I didn't know if they could handle an Altaria of all Pokemon. Lunatone and Solrock were a unique choice as they could fly using their psychic abilities. It wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Finally Cradily and Armaldo, they didn't completely resist Flying thanks to their other types however, they still could do super effective damage as well.

Eventually, I decided on the team I would use, my first choice was Lairon if only because his typing would be great defensively and also he might be getting close to evolving into an Aggron and that boosted strength could help me overwhelm Winona. Secondly, I chose Manectric, his speed and Electric moves would be great against Pelipper that's for sure. Finally, I settled on using Solrock as a surprise choice. I did apologise to the Pokemon that weren't chosen but they seemed fine about not being chosen. At that I left the Pokemon centre and arrived at the Foretree Gym which was a sight to behold.

At first you'd be mistaken for believing that the battlefield was completely like any other and in a sense it was like any other. However, while some Pokemon battled on the ground and in the sky, The gym leader and challenger looked to be battling on platforms high up but secured safely of course. Eventually while I was looking at the field, Winona the gym leader approached me. "Hello there, might you be a challenger?" Winona asked me with a warm smile on her face and I turned abruptly nodding. "Yes my name is Leo and I'm from Viridian City in the Kanto Region." Winona nodded and began leading me to the field where a referee was waiting in preparation for the battle.

"Before we begin you might be wandering what these pillars are here for right?" Winona gestured towards the two massive pillars and I noticed that they seemed to be platforms almost. "At first I was thinking they were platforms for us to stand upon and battle... Now however, on second thought, are they like a lift?" Winona smiled again, "Correct! You have a good eye for battles. You see we each stand on these and once ready they ascend to the very top. This way I and you feel what it's like to be up in the sky like the Flying Pokemon I'll be using. It should help you gain a new and clear understanding of Flying Pokemon." I nodded in agreement, suddenly feeling quite excited.

"I've never actually battled so high up. Don't get me wrong, I've flown on my Flying Pokemon before and maybe had some small skirmishes in the sky before. But battling against a Flying Gym leader up in the sky. It sounds like a real challenge and a adventure for me. I really can't wait!" I announced grinning at the equally happy Winona. I'm glad to here that, since I don't want to keep you waiting any longer, please step on the platform and prepare yourself." At that we both headed over to the platform and once ready. The platform began ascending upwards. I looked as the ground suddenly began disappearing and I began to feel the wind stronger than before. The air felt clearer as well.

The referee began by announcing the rules for our battle. "The gym battle between Winona, the Fortree Gym leader and the challenger, Leo of Viridian City will now begin. Each trainers will use three Pokemon and the match will be over when all of either trainers Pokemon are unable to continue battling. Incidentally only the challenger will be able to substitute their Pokemon. Trainers please send out your first Pokemon thank you!" At that Winona began "I need your help come out Altaria!" Altaria appeared dancing elegantly through the sky as it awaited my Pokemon. "Lairon I choose you!" Lairon must have been confused when he turned around looking for me when he looked upward seeing me high in the sky on a platform. "Don't worry Lairon this is how I'm battling today!" Lairon agreed and stared up at his opponent staring him down.

"You may now begin!" The referee declared and Winona quickly began "Altaria fly down and use Dragon Breath on Lairon!" Altaria unleashed a blue breath of energy but Lairon seemed unfazed by the Dragon move quickly approaching. "Lairon use Iron Defence." Lairon glowed briefly as he upped his defence though Dragon Breath did score a direct hit, it being a special attack it did bypass Iron Defence. Or should I say Iron Defence managed to block the attack. "Impressive" Winona murmured seeing that Lairon had some impressive defence.

"Lairon it's your turn use Rock Slide!" Lairon roared as rocks began falling from the sky at a impressive speed. "Altaria dodge them all!" Altaria began moving through the sky gracefully as it dodged every Rock Slide. Lairon huffed in annoyance at the dodge wondering how he could land a move against such a problematic opponent. but he knew his trainer had a plan, he always did. "Lairon lets stop that Altaria from moving, use Metal Sound!" Lairon grinned and unleashed a powerful and noisy Metal Sound, which definitely hurt Altaria's ears as it slowly began to lower itself unable to continue staying in the air.

Slowly but surely Altaria began descending but Winona wasn't one to just give up, "Altaria use Draco Meteor!" Altaria barely managed to lift its head and unleash Draco Meteor which began thundering towards the battlefield. "Lairon use Rock Slide and destroy every single meteor!" Lairon roared once more and we watched as the rocks and meteors collided throughout the sky. Eventually creating a massive smokescreen which blocked our vision completely. From within the smokescreen I heard a pained groan and was surprised when a Rock Slide managed to score a direct hit against Altaria who was sent plummeting to the ground.

Once the smoke cleared the referee saw that Altaria was clearly unable to continue battling and announced his decision, "Altaria is unable to continue battling, Lairon is the winner!" Lairon roared happy at his victory before he began glowing signalling he had managed to reach his evolution after waiting for some time. "Aggron has been registered to your Pokedex. Aggron the Iron Armor Pokemon a Steel and Rock Type. While seeking iron for food, it digs tunnels by breaking through bedrock with its steel horns." Aggron roared once more creating shockwaves on its newly acquired strength.

Aggron and I cheered together as best as we could since I was high in the air and he was low on the ground. "Altaria, return you battled with grace, take a well deserved break." Winona then spoke, "congratulations are in order, your Lairon put everything he had into that move and to make you proud. As a result he achieved an evolution. You share a strong bond with each other." I thanked Winona before she released her second Pokemon. "I choose you Pelipper!"

Pelipper appeared squawking as he circled Aggron, he did appear nervous at fighting such a behemoth. However, I decided to return Aggron. "Return for now Aggron, you battled brilliantly, get some rest. I might end up needing your help later." Aggron roared his agreement before I recalled him. "Next I choose you Manectric!"

Manectric appeared and was similarly confused at seeing his beloved trainer high in the sky before understanding the situation. "Manectric use Thunderbolt!" Manectric released a powerful Thunderbolt but Winona seemed extremely confident. "Pelipper use Steel Wing!" I watched shocked when Pelipper used Steel Wing not on Manectric, but on the ground. It acted as a lightning rod meaning the Thunderbolt was dispersed

"Just because you have a type advantage against Pelipper, don't think we haven't come up with and perfected strategies that prevent our opponents from using Electric Type moves. You'll have to try a different strategy." I grimaced wondering how to counter such a problematic strategy. However, the answer was quite simple, if Manectric could just somehow force Pelipper to fly upwards and therefore not touch the ground. Electric moves would work no problem at all. Then again that is easier said than done.

"Manectric charge in and use Spark!" Manectric enveloped himself with electricity and dashed towards Pelipper who still had a wing encased in steel pressed against the earth. However, Winona wasn't taking any chances. "Pelipper Hydro Pump!" Pelipper unleashed a great deluge of water but thankfully Manectric managed to dodge and then land a powerful Spark against Manectric.

While the attack itself seemed to have no effect thanks to Pelipper using Steel Wing which acted as a lightning rod dispersing the electricity. However, now Pelipper had been effectively pushed upwards thanks to Manectric understanding my strategy perfectly. "Now Manectric unleash your strongest Thunderbolt!" Manectric grinned, nodding in agreement as he unleashed a powerful Thunderbolt which soared right towards Pelipper who suddenly panicked realising he couldn't negate such a powerful attack.

"Pelipper Hydro Pump counter that!" Winona tried and Pleipper responded, but it was too little to late as Thunderbolt overpowered Hydro Pump and scored a super effective hit. Pelipper plummeted to the ground sparking with electricity and when the smoke cleared Pelipper was declared unable to continue battling. "Pelipper is unable to battle, Manectric is the winner!" The referee declared, Winona smiled returning Pelipper to his Pokeball. "Pelipper you battled beautifully, you take a nice long rest and leave the rest to me."

I wondered how Winona could turn this battle around, she must have known the odds were most certainly against her, what with me having an Aggron and a Manectric and a unknown Pokemon that I hadn't even used. "Take flight Swellow and show them what we can do!" Swellow appeared showing off his unique and beautiful alternate colours as Manectric watched carefully. "Manectric us Thunderbolt once more!" Manectric fired a powerful Thunderbolt as Winona smiled as she countered. "Dodge and use Aerial Ace!"

Swellow similarly smirked as he managed to dodge Thunderbolt and then strike Manectric with Aerial Ace. The attack couldn't be dodged as much as Manectric tried to dodge. The attack didn't do much damage but it showcased how I needed to change strategies and attack from the air where we might have a better chance of success. "Return for now Manectric." Manectric seemed disappointed when he was returned but I reassured him. "You battled really well, but Swellow is too fast in the air, I know we can still win." I'm sure those words reassured Manectric and made him understand his master had a plan as he always did.

"Your up next, come out Solrock!" Solrock appeared and levitated at the same height as me and Swellow. "Solrock I'm counting on you!" Solrock turned towards me and nodded its body as best as it could. But I appreciated the gesture. "Swellow, use Aerial Ace once more!" I didn't understand why Winona used another Aerial Ace after all, Flying moves had barely any effect against Rock Types. Still she must have a plan in mind.

"Solrock use Sandstorm and stop them!" Solrock spun rapidly and created a large sandstorm that enveloped the field. Perhaps it wasn't the best strategy for me though as the sand did interfere with my vision but Winona had the same problems and I'm sure Swellow would have issues as well navigating the sandstorm. Thanks to the Sandstorm, Solrock was able to dodge the Aerial Ace due to seeing the attack coming clear as day.

"Solrock use Rock Slide!" Solrock spun rapidly as he unleashed a wave of rocks that plummeted from the sky. "Dodge those Swellow!" Swellow rapidly flew around but in the Sandstrom Swellow struggled to dodge every attack and some of the rocks managed to connect causing massive damage. "Now lets finish this by using Zen Headbutt!" Solrock agreed and dashed towards Swellow who righted himself glaring at the approaching Solrock.

"Don't give up Swellow, use Aerial Ace at full power!" It was a head to head collision as Solrock and Swellow clashed in mid air. Both pushed against one another trying to force the other back but Swellow proved to be quite stubborn. However, the Sandstorm continually damaging Swellow seemed to be the end, as Solrock managed to use that damage as an opportunity to finally overpower Swellow and send him plummeting to the ground with a powerful smash.

Eventually the smoke cleared and the referee made the decision. "Swellow is unable to continue battling Solrock is the winner. As such the winner of the battle is Leo from Viridian City." At that I cheered as Solrock levitated over to me where I happily embraced it in a hug. However uncomfortable hugging a Solrock might have been it didn't deter me from showing my upmost happiness at its victory. Winona sighed at her defeat but smiled as she observed the cheering trainer and returned her Swellow. "Swellow you did really well, we'll win next time. Have a nice long rest."

At that the platforms descended and I stepped up and approached Winona with Solrock levitating behind me. "Congratulations, you defeated me and I must say the bond you share with your Pokemon was a sight to behold. It far surpassed the bond me and my Flying Pokemon share together. As proof of your victory against me I award you with this the Feather Badge." At that she handed me the Feather Badge which definitely resembled a feather.

"Thank you very much Winona, battling in the sky showed me how it must feel for Flying Pokemon and it will help me in my journey going forward." Winona was happy that a fellow trainer, one as young as myself understood the wonders of Flying Pokemon. At that I returned Solrock, thanking it once again and headed to the Pokemon Centre healing up Aggron, Manectric and Solrock.

After that was done, I released Aggron, Manectric and Solrock and happily informed them that thanks to their efforts we had claimed yet another badge. At that Aggron happily lifted me into the air with a powerful hug as Manectric huffed at Aggron annoyed that he was hogging his beloved trainer while Solrock simply floated around me and Aggron. Eventually Aggron released me though only at Manectric's stubborn movements below him. I thanked them all for their brilliant work and decided to continue on my journey to get the next gym badge in Hoenn.

At that I left Fortree City and returned back to Route 120 and continued along the road. Eventually I came across some trainers who challenged me to battles. The first opponent was a Ninja Boy who sent out a Koffing while I sent out my Gardevoir, having him use Psychic defeating Koffing. Their second Pokemon was another Koffing and Psychic defeated him as well. Once more Psychic defeated their final Koffing. Next up was a Parasol Lady who challenged me with a Castform and since it was raining the Castform had assumed a rain form. I sent out my Hariyama having him use Brick Break defeating Castform.

Next up was a Ace Trainer who sent out a beautiful but powerful Milotic and I sent out my Sceptile having him use Leaf Blade before Milotic could use Ice Beam and defeat Sceptile. Next a Bug Maniac challenged me with a Masquerain and I sent out my Pelipper having him use Air Cutter defeating the Masquerain. I continued along the route and eventually was confronted by a Street Thug who sent out Cacturne and I sent out my Seviper having him use Poison Tail defeating Cacturne. Next a Delinquent challenged me with a Sharpedo and I sent out my Cradily having him use Giga Drain defeating Sharpedo.

Eventually I came across a rather strange ruin like structure, that almost seemed like a cave and as I approached just to have a closer inspection. I was confronted by a Ruin Maniac who most certainly didn't want me interfering with his investigation of these apparent ruins. He sent out a Baltoy and I sent out my Absol having him use Bite defeating Baltoy. His second Pokemon was a Nosepass and I substituted for my Swampert having him use Surf defeating Nosepass.

Now that the Ruin Maniac was dealt with I approached the ruins and couldn't help but think something was off. This just looked like a cave, but a cave that had been sealed off. I decided to keep a record off the structure just in case in the future I managed to understand what it is and if it has any unique Pokemon for me to catch. As I was leaving though a Ninja Boy battled me sending out a Ninjask and I sent out my Blaziken and thankfully the rain had stopped meaning Fire Moves were no longer weakened. A single Blaze Kick overpowered Ninjask and the second Pokemon sent out was a Koffing and I substituted for my Kirlia having him use Psychic defeating Koffing.

As I was approaching Route 121 I was challenged by a Ranger who sent out a Nuzleaf and I sent out my Volbeat having him use Struggle Bug defeating Nuzleaf. The second Pokemon sent out was a Manectric and I substituted for my Vibrava whose Bulldoze managed to defeat Manectric. A second Ranger challenged me with a Lombre and I sent out my Altaria having him use Aerial Ace defeating Lombre. The second Pokemon sent out was a Grumpig and I substituted for my Mightyena having him use Bite defeating Grumpig.

At that all the trainers that had been blocking my way had been defeated and all the Pokemon here had been caught and as such I advanced further to Route 121 and was hopeful to catch some exciting new Pokemon to befriend. I barely even moved when I was challenged by a Hex Maniac who sent out a Duskull a Ghost Type that I had yet to encounter but thankfully I had the Pokemon necessary to defeat it with. I sent out my Cacturne having him use Sucker Punch defeating Duskull. The second Pokemon sent out was a Sableye and I substituted for my Mawile having him use Fairy Wind defeating Sableye.

After that battle I looked on my Rotom Phone to see if there were any new Pokemon to be found here and one popped up. It was Shuppet a Ghost Type and I already had a feeling that Shuppet would be mischievous and a prankster at heart much like Gengar and Mismagius were. Still I headed into the grass to find my chosen partner and eventually came across a Shuppet that was surprised to see a human.

"I need your help come out Nuzleaf!" Nuzleaf appeared grinning he was excited at the prospect of helping me catch a new Pokemon and a new friend too. Shuppet readied itself for battle and attacked first using Shadow Sneak which struck Nuzleaf from behind, annoying him greatly. "Nuzleaf use Payback!" Thanks to having been hit earlier, Payback got a boost in power surprising Shuppet who couldn't dodge fast enough and was struck by the powerful Payback.

Shuppet tried to get itself back in the fight, but the Payback had been much to strong and as such I grabbed a Pokeball and threw it at the weakened Shuppet. "Pokeball go!" I watched as the pokeball shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Shuppet has been registered to your Pokedex. Shuppet the Puppet Pokemon a Ghost Type. They love vengeful emotions and hang in rows under the eaves of houses where vengeful people live."

Shuppet sure sounded like a Ghost Pokemon and when I released him healing him up and introducing myself, he showed that he was as I feared a prankster at heart and already attempted to scare me but thanks to experience owning many Pokemon I simply laughed and told Shuppet if he wanted to scare me he would have to try much harder as I had a sort of sixth sense when it came to Pokemon like this. Shuppet seemed interested in challenging me but instead settled in to being my new Pokemon.

My next opponent was a Beauty who sent out a Kecleon and I sent out my Breloom having him use Drain Punch defeating Kecleon. The second Pokemon sent out was a Seviper and I substituted for my Vibrava having him use Bulldoze defeating Seviper with the super effective move. After that battle I managed to reach a interesting building called the Safari Zone, where trainers could enter and catch all sorts of Pokemon in many different environments but according to my Rotom Phone, the Pokemon that could be captured there, while they were rare in the Hoenn Region. I had already caught them in previous regions that I had travelled and therefore they were not necessary for me to catch.

As such I continued on exploring through Route 121 and was challenged by Teammates that challenged me to a double battle with a Spinda and a Slaking. I chose to battle with my Blaziken and my Hariyama who worked together and utilised their powerful Fighting moves to defeat both Slaking and Spinda. As fellow Fighting Types they worked really well together, showing impressive combinations and trust in one another. It was a beautiful sight to see and showed that each and every one of my Pokemon not only trusted me but trusted in one another as well.

Continuing on I was challenged by a Gentlemen who sent out a Manectric and I sent out my Claydol who used Bulldoze defeating Manectric. Next was a Pokefan who challenged me with a Pikachu and I sent out my Camerupt having him use Bulldoze defeating Pikachu. After defeating those trainers I began scouring the route and collecting and replanting berries with help from my Roselia who very much enjoyed helping me with such gardening chores. However, while planting the berries, Roselia spotted something shiny in the grass and whatever it was must have been abandoned by a trainer.

As we approached I noticed it was a Shiny Stone, the evolutionary item that was used to evolve Roselia into a Roserade. "Roselia, I know you've been wanting to evolve for sometime now. Would you like to evolve here and now?" I didn't even need to ask as Roselia delicately took the Shiny Stone and began evolving. Rotom registered the new Pokemon on my Pokedex. "Roserade has been registered to your Pokedex. Roserade the Bouquet Pokemon a Grass and Poison Type. With the movements of a dancer, it strikes with whips that are densely lined with poison thorns."

Roserade was very happy to have finally evolved and immediately embraced me, though he was extremely careful to avoid touching me with his thorns knowing that they contained a dangerous poison especially for humans. I thanked Roserade for helping me planting and collecting berries before I returned him so he could rest up. Next I would head on over to Lilycove City and continue my journey onwards.
