The Failed Savior

* * *

Ileni lie peacefully in her family's large den, happy enough to begin another day, but even happier to pretend she was still sleeping so that she wouldn't have to do her chores for a while yet. If she were lucky, one of her brothers or sisters would do her share for her before they noticed her act. She would be sure to make it up to them that evening. . . .

Something was different about the den this morning, though. It was far too quiet; even if everyone else had already gotten up and was outside taking care of the morning activities-unlikely-there would be noise filtering through the little cave from beyond its narrow opening. Instead, everything was completely silent. Ileni couldn't even hear any of her siblings breathing beside her. And then there was that strange, bitter, coppery scent invading her nostrils, growing stronger and stronger by the moment.

Ileni opened her eyes, but only to be blinded by glaring sunlight reflecting off the red floor.

Ileni sat up with a start, barely stifling a yelp as her mind tried to make sense of her whereabouts. This wasn't her den. . . .

Then memory returned to her, and even after all that had happened the day before, she slumped in relief that she was in the middle of the wolven territory wilderness instead of what was left of her home. She hadn't had a dream like that for weeks, and had hoped the nightmares had finally abandoned her. No such luck, it seemed.

If not for the dreams-the one that had awoken her was only the last in a long sequence of disturbing scenes to play through her mind that night-she would wish she could go back to sleep. She was stiff and sore everywhere from yesterday's abuse. It took her a great while to remind her legs how to work.

The yellow cat, she noticed elatedly, was nowhere to be seen. She had never in her life been so happy to be alone.

Despite the twinges and aches of her complaining body, Ileni felt numb as she set about finding some breakfast. Much to her surprise, her nose led her to a pile of travel rations stacked near where she'd slept. They were her supplies from the pack the feline had confiscated yesterday. She wasn't surprised that he'd left them behind, only that he hadn't done so sooner. There was no meat in the food, after all.

After eating much of the dried fruit and celery stalks, she began walking, the wind at her back, like always. It took her some time to realize that the wind was now pushing her westward, in the same direction the cat had been traveling. She could hear the creek flowing somewhere to her left, now a small river. Her steps faltered for only a moment. The cat would be far ahead of her by now; she'd slept until midmorning, and his longer legs could carry him more quickly than her own. If she changed directions, she would have no way of knowing whether someone stalked her, but following the wind she could scan with her eyes forward and with her nose behind. She'd been unlucky yesterday, but had lasted a long time without encountering a predator before that, longer than any other hare that had strayed so far from their village, before it-

She banished the thought, and continued westward.

She spotted places on the forest floor every once in a while where something had disturbed the pine needles. She couldn't tell what kind of foot had made them, but she had little doubt that the feline had passed this way. She thought she could smell traces of him, but then, his scent was all over her. She hadn't washed after waking, hoping that his smell, no matter how she hated it coming from her, would help to keep other hunters at bay.

Shortly after midday she saw a very welcome sight: a great many cloven hoof prints gathered around the river bank. A herd of deer had passed this way, and judging by the space between each mark in the soil, they were the two-legged sort. It had been too long since Ileni had met someone who didn't want her as their prey. If she was lucky, the deer might let her stay with them for a time, maybe even give her some clothing.

First, though, she had to wash herself. They wouldn't let her near if they thought they smelled a feline coming. She wasted little time in the icy water. She scrubbed her fur clean as best she could with her fingers and followed the hoof prints along the bank, dripping wet, shivering, and feeling optimistic for the first time in ages.

It wasn't long, though, before the space between the hoof prints grew and each mark became deeper in the soil. A little farther, and nearly a dozen different paths were marked zigzagging off in random directions. The deer had begun running, then scattered. Not ten steps later, Ileni came across an area at the base of a giant redwood where pine needles had been flung in disarray. A puddle of moisture shone on a patch of bare soil, and the spotted yellow feline's unmistakable musk filled her nostrils. It was fresh.

Unexpected anger overcame Ileni's wave of despair. He was not going to scare away the only creatures that might be able to help her.

She found the cat's trail leading away from the disturbed area of needles, small indentations in the soil finding another deer's distinct marks and following its trail. Each of the cat's prints was spaced so far away from each other that Ileni knew she must be missing some in between. Each of his strides matched four of the deer's, otherwise, and the deer had been sprinting.

Ileni ran as well, determined to find a way to stop the cat if she could only catch him in time.

She slowed to a stop when she came upon a doe sitting dazedly with her back to a small boulder, hugging her knees to her chest. The doe didn't look up when Ileni approached. "I wasn't fast enough," the deer said quietly.

"Neither was I," Ileni scanned the ground around the doe, looking for the cat's paw prints to lead away from the area, but the ground was becoming rockier. She didn't know which was he had gone. "Do you remember which way the cat left?"

The doe pointed numbly to the north, deeper into the forest, then stared in amazement when Ileni hurried in the direction she'd pointed instead of the other way.

For the life of her, Ileni could find no sign of the feline's passing, but she did come across more hoof prints, scattered in the increasingly rare expanses of bare soil between the stones. It was foolish of the deer to leave a trail so easy to find with so many rocks available to step on. She followed that trail, lacking the cat's, certain the hunter would do the same, and wished she'd thought to ask the doe how long ago the feline had left her. Ileni had no idea what she would do when she caught him, but the compulsion kept playing over and over in her mind: Stop him. Stop him.

She heard the scuffle long before she found it, following her ears to a thick stand of trees, towering redwood with thick vines tangled amongst their trunks and lower branches. There was the feline, wrestling a young buck on top of the stiff vines. The cat had his stick locked between the two prongs of the deer's antlers, using it to steer the buck's head from behind. The buck kept spinning around, trying to catch the cat behind him, but where the deer was entangling himself more and more within the vines, the feline jumped nimbly over and around them, never loosing his hold on the long stick.

"Hey!" Ileni shouted, hoping to distract the cat.

Unfortunately, she caught the buck's attention as well, and he wasn't as quick as the cat to recover from his surprise. The feline steered him into a thick vine crossing between two trees at his gut's level and shoved him into it. The buck doubled over it, and the cat pushed him further, jumping over the vine to shove the deer's head against the ground, dual-pronged antlers sticking in the dirt. The cat pulled more vines from around him, his movements a yellow blur, and wrapped them around the buck's antlers before he could pull out of the soil, then pull the deer's wrists into more coils. "Little flower, I have to admit I didn't expect to see you again," he said calmly as he went about securing the buck's legs, circling a long vine around his knees and down his shins to his ankles. "Surely after all your pleading and begging, you haven't come looking for more help learning to fight?" He snapped the thick leather belt around the waist of the buck's leather trousers in half with a single extended claw and pulled the pants down to where the vine ensnared his knees, exposing the buck's heavily muscles, brown furred thighs and bottom.

"Stop it!" Ileni yelled, fists balled at her sides.

The feline stepped back to examine his handiwork, watching the buck struggle against his secure bonds. "Not pleas this time, but demands. Yet there is still no magic in the words." He licked his lips as he admired the white inner slopes of the deer's rump and the large, white furred testicles plastered between the deer's pelvis and the vine he was bent over. The cat rubbed the buck's displayed sack with one hand and massaged his own with the other. The buck roared in indignant rage, spitting curses at the feline while the vines around him creaked under his efforts to escape.

"Leave him alone!" Ileni tried to think of something that could stop the cat, anything, but shouting at him seemed to exhaust her abilities.

"True, I'm a little sore after taking two does already, but I've always been too ambitious for my own good." The cat slid his fingers between the deer's sack and the broad vine to scratch the buck's sheath while he stroked his own member to attention. The buck snorted; upside down with his antlers in the dirt, he could see the cat working himself erect beside his entangled legs. The feline pulled his hand out from beneath the buck and gave the pinned genitals a gentle pat before tracing his fingers up the deer's groin and underneath his lowered tail. Fully aroused, he tugged the buck's tail up out of the way and rimmed his anus with a finger before pushing the digit inside. The buck grunted and tensed, clenching his eyes shut and holding his breath. "You're no squirrel, big guy, but you'll do," the cat said, patting the solid rump in front of him and stepping into position.

"Wait!" Ileni rushed forward and grabbed the cat's forearm, trying to pull him away. "I'll . . . I'll make you a deal."

He looked down at her, curious now. "Oh?"

"If you let him go, I'll . . . I'll come with you, and . . . and you can have me whenever you want." Ileni couldn't believe what she'd just offered. Apparently, neither could the deer; he was looking at her with his upside down eyes as wide as they could go.

The cat, though, laughed and turned back to the deer's lifted rear, grasping the other male's hips. "Little flower, you've already proven that you'll follow me whatever I do." He prodded the buck's sack with the tip of his member, then dragged it up the deer's white groin.

Ileni tried to jump over the big vine to free the buck's arms and head, but the moment she moved the cat had her wrist in his hand. She tried to break free, but he pulled her close and hugged her to his hip. She tried to kick him, but her legs were already pressed against his own. Her punches against his stomach and back seemed to have no effect on him. She watched, horrified, as he pushed the tip of his penis into the buck's anus, stretching the sphincter wide. The buck gasped deeply and trembled as the cat thrust sharply into him, but didn't resist, otherwise. Ileni knew why. Fighting had accomplished nothing. She stopped punching at the cat and stroked the side of the deer's brown thigh as comfortingly as she could.

A few more jabs carried the big cat fully inside the buck. He stood there for several long moments, breathing deeply. "I'll make you a deal, little flower. The past two days have been very strenuous for me, but I don't like letting opportunities like you or our big friend here go to waist." He patted the top of the buck's bottom. "That said, you seem bound and determined to turn me celibate. So, this is what I want you to do: make certain he enjoys it. If you help him to climax before I do, I'll be on my way after I'm done and leave the rest of his herd alone. Otherwise, I keep hunting until nightfall, and I'll take you as well." He slid his hand down her back and squeezed her large rump before letting her go. "And don't think of untying him until I'm finished. If you do, the deal's off. He won't be able to fight me off now, anyway." He began pistoning himself in and out of the hapless deer, murring contentedly.

The buck moaned, eyes clenching shut. "Run," he said in deer tongue. "If you're here when he's done with me, you'll be next."

Ileni hesitated. The cat had finally given her a way to make him stop, at least if he kept his word, but it meant helping him dominate the buck. The feline might think bringing the deer to orgasm was generosity, but she knew the buck wouldn't thank her for adding to his humiliation. She wouldn't, if their positions were reversed. It was just more rape.

"Whatever you decide, little one, you'd best do it quickly," the cat told her distractedly. His eyes were barely opened, so fully was he absorbed in his lust, but Ileni didn't doubt for a second that he was fully aware of every move she made.

She balled her fists at her sides and winced in frustrated indecision. Then she turned around and ran back the way she'd come as quickly as she could. She barely noticed the doe she'd passed earlier getting unsteadily to her hooves as she ran by a second time, angry tears clouding her vision. She could have saved the rest of that doe's herd, but had run from the chance.

Ileni was not a predator.

* * *

Sophan slowed his movements once the rabbit had fled and lifted the buck's hips up away from the thick vine supporting him. The buck was even heavier than he looked, but passion's adrenaline fueled Sophan. He was able to hold the deer up with one arm under the buck's stomach. Sophan's other hand snaked lower and found the buck's member already emerging from his swollen sheath. Odd how that so often happened to male prey when he took them; he didn't think their forced submission could be all that pleasurable, unlike with his female targets.

Sophan grasped the exposed phallus and pumped it to full attention, gasping when the buck tensed around him in surprise. He loved it when they did that. Holding himself with his balls pressed against the buck's scrotum, he kept pumping the deer's shaft until the deer's larger sack rose against his own and the buck convulsed, rump locking around Sophan's embedded member as the deer shot his upside down face with his own sperm.

After the buck's orgasm had passed, Sophan set his lap against the vine again, the deer's drained genitals squished between the vine and Sophan's own sack once more. Then, gripping the buck's muscular thighs, he began lunging vigorously in and out of the brown and white rump. Having pleasured himself twice so recently, it took Sophan some time to climax again, unfortunately for the deer. Both males were lathered in sweat before he finished, his orgasm less dramatic than the deer's since it was his third in so short a time. He leaned panting with his hands braced on the buck's buttocks. Once the world stopped spinning, he pulled out of the tight tail hole, his member dripping his juices, and walked away without a word, having taken care of the rabbit's end of his deal for her. If the buck couldn't get himself free of the vines Sophan had trapped him in, his herd would help him before the wolf pack following Sophan found him.

He recovered his staff and his new traveling sack, then made his way wearily back to the stream and followed its meandering westward course. It wouldn't be long now. He'd reach the ruins by tomorrow, or the next day at the latest.

He smelled the rabbit behind him around mid-afternoon after stopping to catch a meal from the growing river-these mountains hosted some of the best tasting salmon he'd ever eaten. He expected the rabbit had fled back upriver until the wind carried the scent of the wolves following from the east. The wind had blown strong that morning before dawn when he'd awoken, and he'd caught traces of his pursuers on it. There were more than the five he'd fought yesterday, many more, but they didn't seem to be in any hurry to catch him. It could be coincidence. These wolves could simply be making their way down the mountain like he was and not even know about his encounter with the five before, but he couldn't afford to count on that. He shouldn't have stopped to play with the deer herd, no matter how brief it had been. He wouldn't be able to risk much sleep tonight.

It wasn't until after dusk that the rabbit dared to announce her presence. He'd pretended not to notice her quiet footsteps getting ever closer, but apparently she knew he was aware of her. "Why did you want the deer to enjoy it?" she asked, even closer behind him than he'd realized.

It was a strange question, but he just shrugged and kept walking along the river's bank while answering. "To tell the truth, I just wanted an excuse to be on my way. Pleasuring the buck was something I thought you could handle."

"You could have told me to help you to enjoy it more, but you wanted me to help the deer enjoy it instead," she pointed out.

That made him laugh. "I don't think I could have enjoyed it more than I did, little one."

"Oh." She didn't sound happy, but apparently he'd answered whatever question she'd really had. She didn't say anything else until full dark had settled over the mountains. "Where is it you're going?"

"To the human ruins," he said simply, and he heard her trip behind him.

"To the what?"

"The human ruins," he repeated. "There should be some next to this river in a day or two."

"Humans are just myths." Sophan didn't reply to that. It was what most people thought about humans, but he knew better. "What makes you think there are ruins along the river?" the rabbit finally asked.

He smiled happily. "Almost every river has some ruins along it at some point. I think humans made their cities there so they could reach water easily." He shifted the bag on his shoulder. "And I found one of their maps a few weeks ago," he said as nonchalantly as he could.

"Are all cats this crazy, or is it just you?"

"I'm a cheetah, if you please, or Sophan, if you're feeling friendly."

"Okay, cheetah. Even if there are ruins ahead, why do you want to find them? You know they're cursed, don't you?"

Sophan hopped over a small tree that had fallen over his path. "Concerned for my safety, little one? I wouldn't worry; it's in one of the ruins that I found my map, and I haven't broken out in sores, fallen off any cliffs, or been obliterated by any falling stars. They're just stones and metal."

"That doesn't tell me why you want to go there."

He finally stopped and turned to face the hare. "Because the humans are coming back." He couldn't help but laugh at her suddenly frightened expression. It was his eyes and not his words that startled her, he knew. They always glowed bright green in moonlight. He turned around and continued walking, sparing her his unsettling gaze. "So what about you?" he asked a while later. "Where is it you're traveling, little flower?"

"My name's Ileni," was all she said for a long time, then, quietly, "I just want to find someplace safe."

Sophan grunted. "Then you should go home."

"There's no such thing." He didn't think he was supposed to hear that.

They stopped with the moon high in the cloudless sky when they found a small, sandy beach at the river's edge. Ileni was curled up and asleep so quickly that he would have been suspicious had they not been traveling so hard. He was lying on his back in the sand nearby, staring at the stars, but looked over at her when her breathing slowed to that of deep sleep. Her slender form was captivating, even with her hugging her knees as she was. She lay on her side facing him, and her shins blocked his view of her chest and lower belly, but they couldn't hide the curve of her hip rising from her waist.

He shook his head, rolling his eyes at his own self indulgence as he got to his feet and padded silently over to the sleeping rabbit. He circled her, admiring the brown patterns that were splotched almost clumsily over her white furred body. He stopped once he came to her bottom to stare at the slit parting her white mound that peeked between her buttocks and the small dimpled depression behind it at the root of her small white tail. He breathed her scent in deeply and knelt in the sand behind her, caressing her thigh tentatively. When she didn't wake, his hands roamed over her buttocks and finally grew bold enough to stroke the fur between them. Sophan smiled. He hadn't taken the time before to truly appreciate how soft she was. He traced her slit with a finger, following the lie of her pelt back toward her tail, at the base of which he paused when Ileni stirred. She extended her lower leg out in front of her and rolled partway onto her back, and Sophan had to dodge her other foot as it swung back where he was crouching. Still mostly on her side, the bunny moved an arm under her head. Her other hand reached down her stomach, and he was amazed to watch her touch herself briefly before that arm fell limp in front of her.

Sophan waited until he was certain she was still deeply asleep, then rolled her gently onto her back and spread her long legs enough that he could kneel in the sand between her thighs. His fingers explored the subtle curves of her chest, gliding feather-light through her soft fur, before he lowered himself on top of her like a heavy blanket, stretching his legs straight out behind him. She surprised him again by wrapping her arms around him and nuzzling his chest in her sleep. He thought he heard her whisper something, but couldn't make it out.

His feline sheath was lying atop her soft mound, his genitals dangling against the slop of her groin. He moved his hips from side to side, rubbing himself against her as gently as he could. Once the tip of his hypersensitive penis escaped his sheath and kissed Ileni's belly fur, it was a matter of moments before he was erect and ready. He reached down between them and guided himself to her entrance, parting her folds with two fingers before sliding fully into her. She tensed, and her eyes popped open to stare at his face, but he couldn't read her expression. Ileni's face was completely blank, neither accusing nor accepting. Her breathing came quick and alert now, but her eyes never left his. Disturbing as that was, Sophan nevertheless continued.

* * *

Ileni was lying in Andrin's arms, kissing him deeply. Her best friend for as long as she could remember, yesterday she would have said he was like a brother to her. Today he was something altogether different. She whispered his name between kisses and hugged him fiercely, feeling him grind his sheath between her thighs. She welcomed his erection as he hilted himself inside her-

And then she opened her eyes and found the yellow cat, the cheetah, lying on top of her. She stared up at his face unblinkingly. The transformation of her dream to this reality didn't surprise her; she'd expected it ever since returning to Sophan yet again after smelling the hoard of wolves to the east. But she was surprised to see a brief flash of guilt come over the cheetah's expression, replaced with shameless lust so quickly she began to think she'd imagined it in her fuzzy-minded state. She watched his face the entire time he took her, waiting for that look to return. It never did, but his thrusts were much gentler this time than they'd been last night. That was for his own sake, Ileni knew. He was bound to be sore after so much sex the past two days.

She kept her arms around his back, as there was nowhere better to place them. She drew her legs up, splayed wide with the cheetah between her thighs, and rested her feet against the backs of his knees. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Andrin. When she imagined it was him lying on top of her, that it was his chest nearly smothering her, the rape became almost endurable. She'd never known she had such feelings for her old friend until now. Thinking of him, she found herself rocking her hips into the cheetah's lunges, gripping his hips with her thighs. His testicles slapped at the back of her mound as his movements became more urgent. When his orgasm finally came, it brought her to her own. Still watching his face, she bucked her hips against his straining body, inner muscles rippling around his throbbing member until he'd drained himself of every last drop of his seed.

He collapsed, rolling them onto their sides. They both panted heavily through their mouths, their every movement sending shockwaves of pleasure through each other. Unfortunately, thoughts of Andrin led Ileni to thoughts of home, and her afterglow was tainted by memories of what she'd brought to her friends and family. She held her face against the cheetah's body, not daring to close her eyes lest she see those memories play out in front of her again.

Sophan's hand glided down her side to stroke and squeeze her large bottom, then a finger slid between her cheeks and rimmed her tail hole. She shuddered when he pushed it inside her up to its last digit, but she didn't fight him. She couldn't help but feel like she deserved this, when she thought about her family. He slid his finger in and out of her several times, but when she didn't react he withdrew it and patted her rump.

"A little more sleep, then we must be going." Apparently he thought she'd dozed off again already. She didn't bother arguing that they wouldn't be traveling together. As long as the wolves were behind them, she was safest with him, however strong his sexual appetite might be.

Once against Sophan fell asleep inside her, clutching her tightly whenever she so much as shifted her weight. She endured it grimly, though she found no more sleep that night.

This was her punishment for killing her home.
