Dark Soles

Chapter 2

Kaolix slumped to the ground as the dust settled, the fires around the raccoon dying inch by inch as he took his focus away from his spells. Other tingling sensations from the holy spells of the pink rabbit and the more dragon-based arcane works of the mare lingered, but his focus was gone. Shattered, as a matter of fact, though not by the demon. It was, after all, gone, and it had left behind something far greater.

"I...I..."

The raccoon stared at his fingers as the fur that had long-since fallen out returned, the gray-black flowing over his digits and up his arms ever so gradually. His lips quivered as he felt the pain - that long-held, almost-accommodated pain that he had lived with for years - faded. He almost cried; he would have if he wasn't on the verge of breaking down into hysterical laughter.

"Humanity," the skunk behind him said. "The demon...had much to give, it seems."

"Ha...ha..."

The tears were coming, and he couldn't stop them. He wrapped his arms around his middle, fingers digging through strands of fur that were still growing. The burned flesh, the scoured muscles, everything was fading, replaced with the glorious, wonderful, blissful feeling of being alive. The pyromancer slumped down, head to the stones of the chapel floor, and he wasn't the only one. The rabbit cleric had fallen to his knees, and the otter with his knives was on his back, pulling his tail to himself and all but wailing in happiness.

Everything else faded as he focused on himself, on having a proper fur coat again, the absence of pain for the first time in months, years. Just knowing he could look at himself in a glass and not hate what he saw meant everything.

He had life again. How had he forgotten how much that meant?

"If you're done, we have work to do."

And, of course, someone had to ruin it. And it was the skunk, of course. Kaolix laughed, hearing the insanity in his own voice as he lifted his head.

"Oh, oh, listen to you...You think that it's so simple...to just come back to life? You think that it means so -"

"I have every understanding of what you're going through. I have little doubt you've all suffered in your worlds -"

"Worlds?" The mare blinked. "What are you talking about?"

"The future, and the present." The skunk shook his head. "Not much time, either. We are...fading. See?"

Kaolix's initial instincts to ignore the skunk until he went away - mostly due to the way that he was trying to tell everyone what to do - lost against his curiosity. He looked around the group and was shocked to see the formerly-solid people around him already fading, their outlines turning misty-white. He looked down at his hands, flicking them back and forth, and saw the same ghostly outlines around his fingers.

"Oh no...no, no, no!" he hissed, pushing himself to his feet. "I'm not losing it again. I'm not going back. I'm not going back!"

"You aren't. You were summoned, and you are being called back. You lose nothing -"

"How much time do we have?" the white wolf asked, shouldering her bow.

"I...do not know." The skunk shook his head. "It is the first time this has happened. You know as much as me - nearly."

"...What happened?" the black cat said, his voice as firm as the Vinheim heretic-hunters, if far from sufficiently deep. "You say this is the first time. The first time for what, precisely?"

"For summoning." The skunk shook his head. "We have little time. We all passed through the same events. The dead fox; he asked us to do things, told us where to go. We have something to find. The Flame."

If he had said anything else, Kaolix would have turned away. He had what he needed to leave, the doors of the chapel would open, and they would be gone from here. But hearing that, remembering the fox that had offered him the Estus Flasks that even now hung at his hips...

He reached down, touching the glass. They had healed him multiple times, though it hadn't been quite enough to get him through the fight on his own. If he hadn't been called here or whatever had happened, he doubted he would have ever gotten past the demon that lay at their feet now. The raccoon flexed his hands, feeling the fire beneath his flesh, and that helped calm him.

"Fine. Let's talk, and quickly."

"Swiftly, indeed." The skunk nodded. "Names. Now."

"Kaolix. Pyromancer. Hot stuff," the raccoon said, unable to help posing slightly.

"Cilwein. Hunter of the Eastern Lands," the white wolf said.

"Um...ah...Nero," the pink bunny said, the cleric standing up again sheepishly. "Former minister of the Way of White -"

"Stay the hell away from me, then," the hyena said, shaking his head. "Your people never brought nothing but trouble."

"...I'm sorry."

"Hmmph. Eihmund. Warrior out of Astora."

"I knew you not," the black cat said.

"You wouldn't," the skunk said. "Different times and places. Move on."

"Alfar, knight of Astora," the black cat said, nodding. "My apologies for the delay."

Kaolix shook his head at all the introductions. A wolf archer from the far lands of the east, a pudgy pink bunny from the church, a hyena warrior that hated the gods, and a holy black cat knight. An interesting bunch, but he still didn't know what they were all going for. Or what the skunk wanted. The names continued to fall.

"Brychan here. Kiiiind of a thief; anyone need a key, by the way?" the otter asked, holding up a ring of them. "Little bored of the current collection."

"Got any skeleton keys?" the crow asked.

"Hmmm, two."

"I'll take one. Might be fucking useful later." The crow took one, and as everyone arched an eyebrow, the bird rolled his eyes. "Fine. Baldred. Used to make a living as a bandit down in Balder. Knights got pissed at me and killed me a couple dozen times before sending me here."

Kaolix's eyebrows nearly shot off his head. For someone that had died that many times, the crow clearly had a fair bit of substance left to him. The average Undead didn't usually last that many deaths before Hollowing started to settle in. Maybe there was something more to him than met the eye.

"Guess it's me next," the bat said. "Tuwulf. Wanderer and duelist of Carim. Let's keep it at that."

"Pissed some people off?" Baldred asked.

"A few clients that got upset with me."

"Heh, ain't the rich always like that?"

"The powerful, at least."

"I suppose I should introduce myself, too," the mare said, running her hand through her dark-brown mane as she got all eyes on her. "Rebecca. I attended the Vinheim school after leaving the Great Swamp -"

"You could have been a pyromancer and you decided to study that dragon garbage?" Kaolix leaped to his feet in incredulity. "What the hell kind of stupid are you?"

"There are more fires than just those taught in the Great Swamp. And there are many flames that can be brought to the fold. I learned enough to fuel my sorceries in a very different way, you know."

"Uh-huh. That's -"

"Arguments later," the skunk said.

Kaolix - and everyone else, he realized - all turned back to the skunk. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his middle, his eyes stern and surprisingly cold. The raccoon felt a little chill go down his spine as he realized just how little warmth there was in that face; he was used to anger, the hot intensity of uncontrolled emotion running through the features of everyone around him. Even the Hollows were heated that way. This stranger - the only one of them that didn't have that border of white mist around his frame - had none of that. He was like ice.

"...And you?" Kaolix asked. "Who the hell are you?"

"I am Romund. The first person in my world sent to this Asylum. The very first."

"...Impossible."

"My existence argues otherwise." Romund shook his head. "I am not going to argue with you. I summoned you here by figuring out how the world works, and we all beat the demon that was keeping us in this place. Perhaps some of us could have beaten it alone, eventually -"

"I was almost there," Baldred said, the crow scoffing.

"Perhaps. But we managed to defeat it together. And we all touch on different, but similar enough, worlds. We have the same goal. We are all moving forward toward the same end goal."

"...The Flame," Kaolix said, and everyone else muttered the same almost in unison.

"That's right. We should be aware of that."

"How did you call us?" Cilwein asked.

"By creating similarities. There may be other, better ways to do it, but I called us all together by getting us through the fog wall at the same time. It crossed a barrier, somehow."

"But why did we come to you instead of the other way around?" Rebecca asked.

"...I was going to ask that," Kaolix said, even though it was a lie.

"I knew what I was doing; you did not. I called, and you were made to respond."

"Made to?" Kaolix snorted. "Well, good luck making that happen again."

"I doubt that it could be made to happen the same way; you are all informed now." Romund shook his head. "I want to make this clear. We have the same goal. And, let's be honest. We don't know what has happened to the world outside the walls of the asylum. We're not going back to the world that we left behind when they locked us up. We do not know what's out there. There are likely to be dangers, particularly if we are all going to the same place."

"Lordran," Alfar said. "The land of the gods."

"...I have a bone to pick with them," Eihmund admitted.

"There are answers there, answers to questions that my homeland has been asking for some time," Cilwein said.

"And...and there are questions...about my order...and the stories they tell," Nero piped in.

"Yeah...probably some opportunities there," Kaolix admitted, "but what's it matter?"

"We were nearly defeated by this demon on our own. If nothing else, knowing how to bring each other in for cooperation would be best for us. Better than coming to a complete halt, and going...Hollow."

The raccoon touched his face, feeling the fur that had been missing for months - years - against his fingers. He was handsome again, something that he had almost given up. Now that he had it again, the thought of going even back to looking like an Undead, let alone a Hollow -

No. No. He would not let that happen.

As the fires burned around his fingers, he nodded, and so did all the others. They must have had similar thoughts, or at least, reached a similar resolution to the whole idea. It might not be the best way to move forward, but it was a hell of a lot better than just sitting back and letting life fuck him over again.

"To Lordran, then, and...to working together, I guess," Kaolix said.

"We shall find out what has happened to the world, and I, for one, intend to make the gods take responsibility for it," Alfar said, the black cat stroking his thumb across the hilt of his blade. "They were our rulers. They had responsibilities. They should follow through."

"They will...I hope," Nero said.

The raccoon had already tuned them out. Grabbing the key from the demon, he walked over to the big door that led through to the other side of the chapel and to freedom. His fingers were already turning to that ghostly white, and he wanted to get this done before they were doomed to fall apart once more. Despite Romund's statement that they wouldn't lose their sense of life and self once more when they went back to their other worlds, he feared it. He feared it greatly.

"One last thing," Romund said. "I assume that you felt the 'current' of souls pushing forward as you walked through the Asylum. Perhaps you even saw their shades -"

"I saw nothing," Kaolix said.

"I saw...something, a few things," Rebecca said. "Some vague silhouettes. Most of them were just random people, though."

"Yeah. I didn't recognize anyone more than once," Eihmund said. "Not much to see."

"Well...I recognized one or two...I might have seen you, actually," Alfar said, nodding towards Nero. "Or at least, a rabbit."

"Good. Look for that," Romund said. "Did anyone see anything else? Anything...darker?"

The raccoon's ears twitched, and he looked back out of the corner of his eye at the skunk. Romund didn't seem to look any different, but there'd been something in his voice there, a break in the cold focus that he'd held for the rest of the conversation.

He saw something, Kaolix thought. He saw something, and it freaked him out.

Considering the focus and determination that the skunk had displayed so far, that thought was enough to send a shiver down his spine. Romund had led the charge from the heights to the demon, and that required no small amount of courage. What could he have seen in the ghosts that made him feel any sort of fear?

There was no clear answer, and nobody else seemed to have seen anything 'dark' with the ghosts. Eventually, the skunk shook his head.

"If you do, tell me. It may be nothing, or it may be something."

"What do you think it is?" Cilwein asked.

"There isn't time. Look. You are already fading."

A glance down at his own hands confirmed that. Kaolix shoved the doors forward and stepped through them, and as he did, the mist that covered his body spread out through the world itself. The first step was on solid stone, and then, he was walking through clouds.

He was blind, deaf, mute. The words that tried to come from his lips in a scream died in the misty air around him. The raccoon gritted his teeth, taking one step after another, hoping against hope that the mist would fade.

And it did, though he gasped for breath as he finally touched ground on the other side. He stumbled, almost falling head over heels as he reached his own world. He whipped his head around, saw that the door to the chapel was shut behind him, and realized that the fight had only killed the Asylum Demon in the skunk's world.

Other worlds.

Other people.

He turned to see the white lights that they'd talked about, the shapes of Nero, Romund, Cilwein, Alfar, and the others pushing forward. They were moving swiftly, some walking, some running, but all moving with purpose to the cliff at the far end of the path. He stared at them for a moment, then followed.

This is impossible, he wanted to think, except that it had been entirely too possible. His fires had carried him so far before the Asylum, but the demon had stopped him cold until he had the help of others. What sort of threats were there in the world that this was considered acceptable prison behavior?

What would they find when they reached Lordran?

Trapped in the Asylum for as long as he had been, Kaolix had never thought about that. He'd only assumed that the world had kept on turning the way that it had been, that the Undead curse had never spread as far as it might have, otherwise the Asylum would have been even fuller than it was. But what if it had gotten worse? What if there was just nobody around to send them to the Asylum anymore, and that was why people had stopped coming?

"We'll find out...but...heh...least I'm not the ugliest mug anymore," he muttered, rubbing a hand along his befurred chin. He smiled. "Not anymore."

The raccoon reached the edge of the cliff face and looked down the mountain. It'd be a long descent, particularly without any clothes to keep him warm on the way down, but -

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

It was like the falling rock, but airborne. The raccoon tilted his head back, and his eyes went wide at the great black bird descending on him from the heavens.

"Oh...gods..."

The flight was interminably long, but eventually, it ended with the bird dropping him off in a clearing of stone and grass and mold. The lichen that grew along the stone structures that had long-since fallen apart was half-dead, rotting with that green-brown that filled the air with a wet stink. The rocks beneath him probably had once been artistically carved out of the earth, but as he stood on them, so close to a bonfire scarily like the one in the Asylum, it felt like he was standing in a crater more than anything else, something else that had fallen into ruin.

Flickers of white - mostly those that he had seen before, but also other shapes that he had not - fell and walked around him. Figures in armor, figures that were naked, those with weapons, staffs, and more that were far more powerful than anything that he had seen before or in the Asylum wandered around him. They were scarcely there for a handful of moments before they disappeared once more, and knowing what they were sent little shivers down his spine.

He wondered if it was part of the curse of the Undead, and reached for his chest. There, under his fur, the Darksign still burned. He'd never seen the glimmers of other worlds like this before that had taken root there, and he hoped - desperately hoped - that the insight that he had gained was solely from that. If he could curse himself, if he could leave the Undead curse behind...

Well, maybe there was a way to purge it. Maybe he could burn it out.

But even as he reached out for the bonfire, activating it, he heard the soft chuckle of another living being. Kaolix whipped around, blinking as he saw a gray-furred rabbit sitting at the edge of the circle. A raised, broken pillar base served as the lapine warrior's seat, and he leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands folded together as he chuckled.

"My, my, escaped the Asylum, did you?" the rabbit asked. "A real shame. You should have stayed there; the world's gone all to rot in the meantime."

"What are you talking about?" the raccoon asked, shaking his head. "There's no life up there."

"There's no life anywhere, my friend. No life, no hope, no nothing. It's all a matter of when you go, and when the curse will take you."

"That's just asking for it to happen."

"Oh, I suppose. You could try, I guess, but why, when there's no hope of ever succeeding?"

"...Try what?" he asked. "I'm up for a challenge."

The rabbit chuckled, the sound of his voice almost maddening to hear as he shook his head. He could almost imagine that there were other rabbits in front of him right then, other copies of him -

Don't think of that. You'll drive yourself crazy if you start wondering what all the rest of them are doing right now.

And besides, he didn't want to think of them too much. They might be helpful, and hell, some of 'em might actually be good people, but if he couldn't rely on himself, he was in much deeper trouble. Those that had to be taken care of had no chance in a world that had gone completely mad.

"What do I need to do?" Kaolix asked.

"Well, there's the bells of awakening, aren't there? One deep down, one on high," the rabbit said, gesturing down and up. "One's deep down in the Depths, past the rickety paths of Blighttown, while the other's up in the Undead Parish, past the Undead Burg."

"...And what happens when you ring the bells? You ever hear that part?"

"Oh, some foolish prophecy or another. The way opens through the fortress past the Parish, and from there...well, it doesn't really say, but it's the only hope that the world's had for a while."

The Parish. He remembered some old stories of what was in Lordran and where, but much as he tried, he had no clue what it actually meant. What he did know was that he had to find the Flame. The Flame was the only hope that he had of burning this curse out of him and moving on.

But...

Even as he considered it, those white flickers were still there. He saw them running off, darting this way and that. The shapes of Eihmund the hyena, Nero the rabbit, Tuwulf the bat, and Romund the skunk were darting through the ruins, with Romund and Nero heading toward the back of the small, abandoned church, while the other two were passing through the larger building toward what looked like a graveyard at the back. He could just make out Baldred the crow, Cilwein the wolf, and Alfar the cat heading toward Undead Burg, with Brychan the otter following the rolling stairs to the undersides of the ruins.

There was no sign of Rebecca, though, and that was fine enough for him. He had little to say about the sorcerers of Vinheim, and he was fine putting that mare from his mind.

"Thanks..." For nothing, he wanted to say but didn't. "I'm going to...take a rest."

"Heh, do whatever you need to do. Not like we'll be doing it for long, heh."

The rabbit really did seem half-insane, and he wasn't sure that it wasn't going to come back and bite him in the ass later. For now, he moved to the more shielded half of the circle, putting the rabbit out of sight and leaning back against the stones.

Despite the frustration of traveling this far and the shock of all the little revelations that he'd been forced to acknowledge, there was one thing that still pushed at the back of his mind. It was an urge that he hadn't felt for months, something that had always hurt too much for him to even consider. Now that he was whole again, however, it was pushing at him with a vengeance.

He rubbed his hand over the bulge that was slowly growing in his robe, the fragments of cloth rising as his cock rose up and started begging for attention. As an Undead in the process of Hollowing, his skin had been so burnt and painful that there was nothing that he could do to actually touch himself. Even the act of getting hard had pulled on skin that didn't want to be touched, and it was like trying to get off with a full-body burn down there.

Now, though...

He rubbed over the bulge, smiling and chuckling.

"Oh, hell with it. Who's going to be that bothered?" he muttered.

Just as he was undoing the knots that he'd adapted from other parts of his robe, however, he felt an odd pulling sort of feeling. It was almost like...

Oh, come on...

It was exactly like the feeling he'd got going through the fog wall, exactly like the feeling of being pulled into someone else's world. This time, however, he was aware of it, and he stubbornly put his feet down, all but stomping on the rocks as he silently declared his intention to stay right where he was.

Instead, someone else was called through. He blinked as the white form shimmered into being, completely mist-like, then seemingly made of light, before -

"You?!" Kaolix sputtered as Rebecca took form. "You - holy - where were you hiding that?!"

The mare's robes were parted in a similar fashion to his - plus one small, barely a handful breast hanging out of the top of her robe - but rather than a slippery slit such as he expected, she had a firm, full horse cock pointing out from between her legs. He leaned back in surprise, looking down, then up, then down again. Kaolix pointed at the head as Rebecca just sat there in shock.

"...I'm guessing that's not your sorcerer catalyst under some sort of illusion."

"...Pffft. Ha...hahaha," Rebecca sputtered, her laugh as genuine as it was embarrassed. "No. Gods, no. I just...usually have that hidden behind other spells."

"They don't teach that shit at Vinheim. Trust me, I was around enough sorcerers to know."

"No, they don't, but that's part of learning their stuff when you have a different perspective. Not like you're hiding yours, either, by the way."

"Yeah, but I'm supposed to have one."

"And are either of us supposed to have this?"

Rebecca dragged her robe open slightly more, revealing the faint glow of the Darksign against her chest. He winced, touching his own and shaking his head.

"...Point taken."

"Yeah. So...just couldn't help yourself, either, huh?"

"Heh, I'm surprised a sorcerer of all people would dare bare themselves in the open. In my experience, all of your sort are too busy being all up themselves with your fancy robes and magical supremacy that you wouldn't dare take it out where someone might mistake you for a -"

"For an earthy pyromancer in the grips of heat and fire?" the mare asked, smiling as she crossed her arms under her breasts.

"Well, something like that."

"We're not that different. Besides, I grew up in the Swamp. Where did you grow up?"

"Ah, um...ahem..." Kaolix rubbed the back of his head. "Uh, not important."

"I'm waiting."

"Doesn't matter."

"Sounds like it does."

"...Vinheim."

"Hah. Pyromancer lite."

"Fuck off," he muttered, even as he smiled despite himself. "They were never going to let me into the academies, so I just...got what was left. Wasn't exactly going to throw myself at the gods with how screwed up they were, so pyromancy was the only thing I had left."

"And teasing the boys?"

"Heh...guessing you were doing the same, then?" He nodded down at her dick. "Don't think that made it easy."

"Gods, no. The bigger you are, the harder it is to control. But...since we have a moment...what are you into?"

"Just like that?"

"Hey, we don't exactly stick around long; let's get to the point and talk about who's got the bigger magical dick later."

"Fair. I've got a thing for musk, dick, and feet. You?"

"Good with giving footjobs and getting dicked down," Rebecca said.

"You're a bottom? With that thing?"

"Try figuring out how to fit 'that thing' into anything and tell me how long you'd stay on top. You game?"

"...Never thought I'd get the chance to fuck a sorcerer rather than getting fucked by one. Heh, hope you're ready to have a 'lowly' pyromancer fucking your brains - mmmph!"

He bit his lip as Rebecca rolled her hips back, pulling her legs up and putting one soft, white-soled foot right against his crotch. For all that she looked like a mare, she had the meaty soles of a large stallion, and she pressed her feet firmly against his dick. He huffed as he leaned his head back, feeling the light coating of sweat and oils on the bottom of her feet already working him up. She curled her toes around the head of his cock, jerking it slowly.

"Heh, you were saying?" the mare asked.

"Mmmph. Where'd you learn that kind of footwork?"

"Let's just say that there's some naughty dragon tomes in the depths of the school if you know where to look. Some of those old dragon masters were perverts of the highest order."

"Heh...if this is a dragon footjob technique...pity there's no dragons left."

"Heh, you ain't seen nothing yet."

Kaolix smiled as she worked her feet along his dick, occasionally looking down to see her feet in action. It was quite the show, considering how big they were. He wasn't exactly a small guy - he had about seven inches between his legs - but her feet were so large and so wide that they utterly eclipsed his cock. The fleshy-pink rod was constantly squished between the soles, smeared with her sweat, and he bit his lips as she worked him up rapidly. His breath caught in his throat over and over again as she played with him, her toes curling right around the head and teasing the tip between the tightly-clenched toes before sliding down his shaft and jerking him from head to base.

Up, down, up, down those toes went, and if her feet had been shorter, she might have been grinding her heels against his balls, but instead, it was a spot just below the arch. She was cupping them there, making him huff and grip at the grass beneath him.

"Fuck...fuck..."

"Heh, love a big foot, huh?"

"Mmmph. It's been so long..."

"Well, hope you summon me again. Probably won't have time for it this time, but you're going to put those soles of yours to work sometime."

Kaolix wouldn't have minded that in the least, but right then, the sheer pleasure of those white equine soles were more than enough to keep him distracted. He huffed as the mare rolled her feet to the sides, making sure that his cock was channeled down between her arches as she started stroking up him and down. It had been so long since he'd been able to endure being touched by anyone, even himself, and this was so much better than he remembered.

They were both soon sweating like mad, the heat of the bonfire combined with his own inner warmth making them slick and shiny. Much as he would have liked to continue the footjob, he could feel the slight haze around his dick, and knew that she was already starting to fade slightly.

"Better...better hurry up and move on," he said.

"Heh, you just want my fat ass."

"Yeah...but don't want to lose the chance, either."

"Alright. Come on. If you think that you can put this sorcerer in her place, prove it."

Rebecca got up, getting on her knees and pointing her ass back at him. From behind, he could see those low-hanging balls, that fat horse dick, her soles painted with sweat and pre-cum, but most of all, he saw that ass. Like any horse's would have been, it was big, and had all the proper curves of a mare. No wonder he hadn't clocked her other sex, considering that she'd been putting up such a good illusion.

Cock throbbing, he wiggled himself between her legs, sighing as her soles pressed in against his legs. He tapped his cock against her hole with a chuckle.

"Oh, I'm going to wreck this."

"Promises and big talk do nothing."

"Oh, it's going to be a big something."

"Then get - oh my god!"

He hadn't even done anything yet, and he blinked as Rebecca stiffened up, backing up against him and almost bowling him over. She shook, and it took him a second to realize that she wasn't shaking with intense lust the way that he was. The raccoon groaned as she all but sat on him as she pushed herself backward.

"What? What the hell's the matter?" he groaned.

"The rabbit..."

"Oh, come on, now it bothers you that we have an audience?"

"No, no, not this one, but...the other - the one where I came from."

"He's not here, is he?" Kaolix asked, blinking.

"No, but...but I still saw...saw him. And he was...he wasn't white. Or red."

"...Dark?" the raccoon asked.

"Dark as pitch."

"...We should get out of here."

"I second that!" Rebecca said, pulling on her robes, and he did the same.

Whatever had scared Romund about the darker souls wasn't something that he wanted to mess with. Sex could wait, even if his blue balls were doing everything that they could to convince him otherwise.

The End
