Julie was on her stomach wearing a tee in bed early one evening, typing an informative essay on her laptop for one of three classes she was currently taking with Midnight curled up beside her, his paw on her arm.

She took one hand from her keyboard after finishing a paragraph to run her fingers over his ear with its ring aglow, causing him to twitch it and lift his head slightly to look at her.

Julie was as happy as could be nowadays. During her and Midnight's short and lovely trip to Unova months ago, she found out through a call from her mother that she got accepted into Castelia University, so her hard work paid off.

She remembered back when her and her mother applied for her to transfer in eleventh grade and had to gather several teacher referrals and documents for it. Julie was just glad her mindless teenage behavior at the tail-end of her high school career didn't get her in trouble. Getting caught would have ruined her life and soiled any chance at transferring to a university, especially one as notable as Castelia's.

Julie was a freshman on her second term and majored in regional history. She currently lived on campus in dorms with Midnight since the school allowed up to two pokémon to live with a student and had a small room on the third level with a restroom, desk and chair she rarely used for anything but a snack holder, and a closet.

Midnight shifted and nuzzled her arm. He was just as happy being with Julie while she journeyed through life. He was a spoiled umbreon, not only by having a human mate, but he couldn't recall the last time he'd eaten PokéChow under her care.

He had a few acquaintances here he'd met on campus and in the communal areas of the dorms, such as the kitchen and laundry rooms that he hung out with from time to time when Julie needed to use them, but Midnight didn't need to socialize constantly. His years spent at Ecruteak High and the principal's home may have developed that, and he now had his beautiful mate on top of it.

Julie glanced at the time on her screen and looked at him. "You wanna get something to eat on campus in a bit? Should finish this essay by 7:30."

"Umb." They hadn't eaten since lunch, so that sounded great. Midnight didn't need to eat often, so he could have waited until tomorrow, but he did enjoy being out under the moon.

"We can also leave grounds and go to the market for snacks since we're running low." The immediate area surrounding the university was safe, so she had no concerns about leaving campus during the evening as long as it wasn't too late.

Julie was supplied money by her mother for living expenses and didn't have to rely on financial aid or loans, but she did have to budget wisely, which she was still getting the hang of. She'd gotten her right ear pierced last week. It was a small blue water stone piece she was in love with, but it wasn't cheap.

Julie looked back at her laptop upon hearing her video call app ring, seeing that it was Alyssa. She wore a perplexed expression while tracing the trackpad and accepting it, seeing her close friend pop up on the screen.

"Hey, college girl," Alyssa said with a grin. She was in a black sweater.

Julie rested her chin on her palm. "Alyssa, we agreed on calling after I finished my schoolwork."

She looked up for a second. "Oh... right, but I won't bother you for long, jeez. I was just eager to see how things were going since we haven't talked in a while. Essay's for that public speaking class, right?"

"I'm doing great, actually. Met a few new people to talk to and occasionally hang out or study with, and yeah, I have to present it in front of the class tomorrow again. My anxiety spikes whenever I think of it, but I feel it'll help raise my confidence by the end. You?"

"Nice, nice, and before I answer that, where's your boyfriend?" she smirked slightly.

Julie rolled her eyes and tilted the laptop forward so the cam lowered and displayed Midnight.

He eyed Alyssa, whom he hadn't seen in forever, but he didn't forget that explosive personality of hers.

"Cute as ever, you two..." Now that she thought of it, Alyssa hadn't kept up with them after Julie moved and was curious. "You are still a thing, right?"

"What? Uh, yeah, of course. Why wouldn't we be?" Julie couldn't be offended by that question, but to this day, she had no urge to date any boy she saw or met.

Alyssa put her hand up. "I just haven't been in touch. Calm down. Your sass is off the charts tonight." She probably could have approached that better, though.

Julie grinned. "Sorry..." She tilted her laptop back and raised her foot, kicking it. "Now tell me what you've been up to."

She reached over and brought up a pokéball. "Guess what's in here."

"What?"

"Guess."

"Alyssa, jus-"

She sighed. "Julie, humor me for once."

"Ugh." She pondered. "Haunter?"

"Nope, but close. It's a gastly, and I have two, soon to be a haunter and gengar. I went to Kanto and caught them some days ago."

"No way... So, it begins?"

"It begins."

Julie tilted her head. "Wait, how'd you catch them without the help of a pokémon in the first place?"

"Oh, I had to borrow a cousin's that lived there." Alyssa shrugged. "But yeah, I'm gonna start training them. Told you it was happening."

"Hey, I never doubted it." Julie could talk to her all night but still had a paper to finish and places to go. "Alright-"

"Yeah, go finish your essay. Good luck tomorrow. Pretend I'm sitting in one of the rows if you get a bad case of stage fright." Alyssa was glad to see Julie succeeding and hoped she went far in her major. Maybe she'd become one of those boring historians.

"Thanks, and we'll talk more soon. Happy training." Julie ended the call and pushed her laptop away, rolling onto her back. Alyssa's question made her think. She looked over at Midnight, who had laid back down during the call.

Julie was still in love with him and actively avoided boys on campus, barely interacting with them unless she had to or if it was for a group project. She also kept her distance from any acquaintances she made, but when it came to boys, even more so.

It may be rather extreme, but Julie didn't want there to be any chance she could fall in love with a person. She feared the idea, and she didn't want to go through having to reject anyone if it ever came to it.

Her and Midnight were perfect for each other. They went out together, ate together, traversed campus, and yes, they had sex about every other day. Julie still had to be mindful of what others could hear in the halls, but the freedom was amazing, and their lovemaking freed her of a lot of stress she'd have otherwise.

Anyway, back to typing and preparing for this stupid speech that'd be responsible for half her grade. It wasn't getting earlier, and she was one to delve into her thoughts for hours. Julie shifted back onto her stomach and pulled her laptop to her.
