No Growing In The Library

3,000 word commission for Egk2 featuring his character Andy and my character Dragonien involving a poor, innocent library getting outgrown by prodigious amounts of red dragon.

Andy and Dragonien are doing some sightseeing and exploring a local famous library. When people say reading is magical neither of them expected one of the books to take that literally.

"Footsteps echo through the silent halls of The Elder Archives. Floors undisturbed for untold centuries are tread upon for the first time in living memory. Ancient knowledge long-since lost to the ages sits just waiting for the arrival of one who shall reclaim the library for modern civilization. That wait has finally come to an end as two brave explorers wander their way deeper into-"

"Andy, are you narrating imaginary adventures to yourself out loud again?"

The fox's external monologue cut off abruptly at the sound of a familiar, deep voice. Its owner leaned his head into view from around the corner of one of the nearby oaken bookshelves as they questioned the fox's actions. Andy's overly-large ears flattened against his head momentarily as a flush of embarrassment heated his cheeks. The red dragon now watching him studied his expression before grinning knowingly at the lack of vocal response.

"That's a yes." Dragonien answered in Andy's place.

The fox glared in response, cheeks puffing out just a bit in a momentary pout before responding. "I like the drama, don't judge me!"

"Drama? What drama?" the red dragon asked. "It's a public library."

The fox scowled and threw up his hands. "No, it is THE public library! The biggest one in the world! that seems like kind of a big deal, doesn't it? And big deals deserve a bit of drama!"

Andy's choice of words caused Dragonien to grin wide enough to expose most of his impressively sharp fangs. Slowly, the dragon moved around the corner of the bookshelf. As he did, he straightened back up to his full height, head rising higher until it loomed fully above the top of the rows of bookshelves surrounding them both. Not just absurdly tall at over eight feet in height, the red hide covered dragon was a sharp contrast to the leaner proportions of his vulpine friend. Where the fox was almost the perfect median of 'average' in build the dragon was a monolith of bulk in seemingly every form it came in. Thick, rippling muscle that left his arms thick enough that his biceps bulged anytime he raised them and his thighs girthy enough that they pushed against each other slightly but noticeably in a fight for space. Layered across his powerfully built form was a thick padding of softer fat that, while not enough to hide most of his musculature, was more than enough to grace the dragon with a prodigious belly that stuck out farther than his muzzle did. Even without his impressively significant height Dragonien would still qualify as massive. But with his proportions and height put together the oversized dragon barely fit through most doorways.

"Where is my drama then? Or are you saying I'm not a big deal?" The dragon challenged. As he did, he took two heavy steps towards Andy until he was directly in front of Andy and his stomach was inches away from the fox's torso. Though his words were aggressive the playful smirk tugging at the edges of the dragon's lips took any true heat out of the action.

With the dragon standing so close, Andy was forced to crane his head back to keep eye contact with the dragon. It took a conscious effort of will not to take a step back but Andy stood his ground even as another blush bloomed across his face. Thankfully the flush was hidden by his bright orange cheek fur. Most would have expected such a blush to be in response to being called out on his dorky behavior but Andy's flustered state had as much to do with being within such close proximity to someone as massive as Dragonien was. The fox had a type that could be best summarized simply as 'big'. And if there was one thing the red dragon was, big was certainly it.

"I DID mention you were one of the two brave explorers, didn't I?" the fox challenged, trying to shift attention away from the real reason he was suddenly flustered.

"Yea, but that means I'm just part of the library's thing. I want to be a big deal on my own! Let me guess, I'm your assistant in this little adventure." Dragonien immediately challenged. His voice was confrontational but the clear lack of heat in his words showed the dragon was just messing with Andy rather than being genuinely upset.

For the second time in as many minutes, the fox's ears flattened before he could catch them; a clear sign of his guilt. A moment later they perked back up and he glared defiantly at Dragonien. "It's an important job! Besides, you can't read half the languages in here and I can! So that makes you the assistant."

To emphasize his last statement, Andy waved around a book he had picked up from one of the shelves buried in a back corner. It had an old leatherbound cover without lettering or title which made it stand out in sharp contrast from the more modern books that made up the overwhelming majority of the library's contents. Upon opening it up to a random page the interior showed hand-written lines of text occasionally broken up by unfamiliar occult drawings and designs. After squinting at it for a silent few seconds Dragonien had to begrudgingly admit that he, in fact, could not read the book.

"Fine, you win. I can't make heads or tails of it." He admitted. Then, squinting again at the text the dragon asked "So what DOES it say?"

The question caught Andy off guard and caused the fox to flinch and hesitate. Turning his attention back to the page he skimmed over the writing without answering for several moments. When those moments dragged on past a full minute the dragon grinned triumphantly.

"You can't read it either, can you?" He accused smugly.

"I can too!" Andy snapped back in frustration. Then Andy's ears and tail drooped slightly at his unintentionally harsh retort. Then, speaking more calmly he continued. "I can read it, but I have no idea what it says." When Dragonien raised an eyebrow in question the fox answered the unspoken question. "I can read and understand the language but what's written here in gibberish. It doesn't make any sense.

"So what DOES it say? Like, is it just totally random letters or just words you don't know?"

Andy paused to skim the page he was on several times. As he did his mouth moved as if silently testing some of the words before he finally spoke.

"I think it says something like Vajfas Janstif Kharentu Pathentias but I don-"

Andy didn't get to finish his sentence. A split second after the fox finished speaking the last of the foreign words a strange light radiated from the book in his hands. It built as if the pages themselves were luminescent until the light pooled near the spine and a bolt of arcane purple energy flew from the book and slammed straight into Dragonien's chest! The impact of whatever it was hit the dragon hard enough that even Dragonien's prodigious self stumbled backwards as if hit by a charging bull! Losing his balance, nearly a thousand pounds of dragon soon fell on his ass with enough force that the floor actually shook slightly. Thankfully the dragon didn't seem to be harmed but the shock of the unexpected and inexplicable discharge of energy left the both of them confused and stunned. Their confusion was soon replaced with disbelief and a twinge of panic when Dragonien's body started moving on it's own despite the dragon still sitting perfectly still. It took a second for them both to realize he wasn't actually moving.

He was growing.

Both of their eyes went wide as they watched the already oversized dragon, who even sitting down was nearly as tall as Andy, rapidly beginning to swell even larger! Within seconds he was looming above Andy as he always did despite still sitting flat on his ass. But the dragon's growth didn't stop there. His legs swelled with the rest of him and were soon stretching out to either side of Andy as their expanding mass framed the fox between them. His tail snaked out behind him deeper into one of the rows between bookshelves like an ever-thickening snake slithering down the aisle. A sharp crash snapped both of their heads to one side where they saw one of Dragonien's enlarging hips had bulldozed itself right into a bookshelf and knocked it over. A second later the dragon's other hip did the same to a shelf on the opposite side of his body.

By now the dragon's head was rapidly approaching the four story-high elevated ceiling overhead. The intricate glass chandelier hanging down over the circular central chamber was soon lifted up as the dragon's forehead pushed up underneath it, the fixture briefly balancing on top of Dragonien's head like some kind of intricate glass crown. Moments later, after the large glass fixture had slid to the side and now dangled down around his shoulder, a sharp THUNK shook the building as the dragon's head slammed against the ceiling with enough force a few bits of pebble-sized stone broke free and rained down around him. All the while the as he had risen towards the ceiling dragon's expanding mass had been shoving more and more of the furniture around him out of its way as it demanded more space.

Entire rows of shelves soon were collapsing like lined up dominos as dragon ass cheeks and thighs the size of cars shoved into them with unrelenting force. Dragonien's tail rapidly grew too thick for the width of the row it had been stretching down and shoved shelves around it further and further away like the rest of him. Andy was forced to scramble backwards, clambering over reading tables and the checkout desk to avoid the dragons expanding mass from bulldozing him underneath it. Within less than a minute of the book's effect almost the entire open central area of the library had been completely filled by what was now nearly a hundred feet of heavy-set red dragon!

Luckily for the two of them that point was when the growth finally decided to stop. Not that no longer growing left him any less massive, but at least Dragonien wasn't about to outgrow the building and bring the entire thing crashing down on them both. The now truly giant dragon swung his head back and forth to look around the much-diminished -- at least to his perspective -- library who's ceiling he was now forced to hunch down under. It took him a moment to finally spot the flare of orange and white fur down between his legs that was the now, to him at least, toy-sized fox.

"What the hell happened?" Dragonien rumbled, causing Andy to cover his ears from the unexpected volume of Dragonien's voice. The dragon winced, immediately recognizing how much louder his voice was now, then smiled sheepishly before modulating his tone to more of a whisper. Or at least what was a whisper for him. To Andy, and anyone else that hadn't already evacuated the library, the dragon's word still came out as a deep rumble like the revving of heavy industrial equipment engines that, while less deafening, was no less powerful. "Sorry."

"I uh um I have uh. I don't... I have no idea." Andy stammered. The fox was still dazed at seeing two thighs now thicker than he was tall framing him to either side and was having trouble putting his thoughts together.

There was a silent pause between the two of them that dragged on for several seconds. Then, voice dripping with amusement, Dragonien rumbled jokingly. "Ok now I'm DEFINITELY a big deal deserving of some drama, right? Do I get my own narration adventure? Oh, we can call it the myth of the Journey to the top of Drago Mountain!"

Andy glared up at the giant dragon on reflex then winced again when he realized how far he had to look up to lock eyes with a face now big enough to swallow him whole. His expression faltered further when fingers as thick around as trees reached down and unceremoniously scooped him up like a toy. With a stomach-churning rapid elevation that would have shamed any express elevator, Andy was lifted until he was some forty feet up off the ground and held face to gigantic face with Dragonien. Taking a deep breath, the fox tried to calm down and run through what had happened, speaking out loud as he did so.

"So, all I did was just look through the book and tried to read it. When I read it in my head nothing happened but as soon as I said whatever the hell Vajfas Janstif Kharentu Pathentias is out loud then the book-oh shit."

Andy's curse lined up in sync with several events that all happened at once. The giant dragon's eyes widened in disbelief and shock, though from what was about to happen or that Andy had actually been dumb enough to accidentally say the words obviously responsible again no one knew, at the same time the book glowed once more and a second bolt of energy flew out and impacted Dragonien's snout!

This time there wasn't enough force in the arcane blast to move what now had to be dozens if not hundreds of tons of dragon but that didn't diminish it's other effects in the slightest. Andy soon found the small platform of a palm underneath his feet rapidly stretching outwards in every direction as it grew along with the rest of its owner. The sharp gunshot-like cracking of thick marble and stone echoed around him as the dragon's head and shoulder pushed up against the ceiling and started to break through it! Thankfully, Dragonien had the forethought to close his fingers around Andy and let his closed fist protect the fox from the sudden downpour of stone and debris that rained down as he grew right through the ceiling.

Outside, people milling around the street that had otherwise ignored the panicked crowd of people fleeing the library suddenly found themselves staring in shock as the entire domed roof of the massive library bowed upwards then exploded in a shower of dust and stone debris! Chunks of rock ranging from pebbles to car-sized chunks tumbled off of the growing red dragon's head, shoulders, and arms without even seeming to bother him. Boulders of marble that could had crushed a police cruiser bounced harmlessly off of his forearm like nothing more than a small dirt clod. But the destruction the dragon's growing body caused wasn't limited to just the roof of the library.

Within seconds feet bigger than trucks exploded through the front of the library while a tail longer and wider than a boat burst through the back of the building. An instant later the dragon's hips and torso bulldozed their way through the remaining inner walls and the entire library structure collapsed and vanished beneath his growing mass. Though Andy could only get glimpses of light from the protectively closed fist of the dragon he could see how big those fingers were getting around him and soon realized Dragonien was growing much, much faster than the first time.

It wasn't long before not only the library complex but the surrounding buildings were being smashed apart and buried under a tidal wave of jeans-clad dragon ass and thigh as Dragonien swelled across the landscape. Rows of cars from the parking lot at first then buildings across the street were being pushed aside by the dragon's enormously growing feet and legs. The ground sunk deeper and deeper beneath Dragonien's exponentially increasing weight as what would have been a minor imprint was rapidly becoming a butt-shaped lakebed just waiting for the next rainfall to fill it! All the while Dragonien watched in disbelief and a mixture of nervous concern and tentative eagerness as the entire world seemed to shrink down around him. After all, he may have been worried about the damage he was causing there was also part of him that was excited to see the whole world shrinking around him.

Already cars and buildings were smaller than toys to him, entire houses able to fit between two of his fingers like a sugar cube. Skyscrapers rapidly dwindled down in his line of sight until, even sitting down, there wasn't a single building within view that stood as tall as Dragonien was while sitting. By the time the growth spurt slowed to a stop his previous height of a hundred feet would have been outright miniscule compared to his new size! A hundred foot tall him would have been less than half the size to the dragon now as Andy had been after Dragonien's first growth spurt. If his quick mental napkin math was right Dragonien was just a bit over two thousand feet tall now, almost half a mile in height!

Dragonien's eyes widened at the thought of Andy and he quickly turned his attention to his closed fist. Carefully, he uncurled his fingers, making sure to keep his palm as level as he could, and looked down for his vulpine friend. There, roughly in the middle of his palm, was a disheveled version of his friend. Or at least that's what Dragonien thought the little tuft of orange was in the center of his palm. Thanks to his new size Andy was barely the size of a sugar ant from his perspective.

Leaning in closer, Dragonien saw the little orange speck stumble backwards from the approach of what, to him, must look like a sky-filling eye descending upon him. The dragon's ears twitched as he tried to listen for Andy's voice. After a moment he carefully moved his hand and tipped it to the side, letting Andy slide down the incline to land on the bridge of the dragon's gigantic muzzle.

Staring down slightly cross-eyed at the little orange dot in his vision, Dragonien started to open his mouth to speak then stopped himself. Andy's ears had been left ringing from his voice at a hundred feet tall so there was no telling how loud his voice was now. Instead, he kept quiet and tried to listen to what Andy might be saying. After focusing his attention, he thought he saw the fox grinning and brandishing something at him. It took Dragonien's gigantic earfins a second to process the miniscule whisper of noise he heard coming from the fox but when he did his eyes went wide in shock. A split second after hearing a concerningly familiar set of words an equally familiar flash of arcane purple light glittered in his vision. Seconds later, much to the detriment of the surrounding landscape, the already titanic dragon began to grow even larger.

Well. Dragonien had said he wanted to be a big deal. Andy apparently had decided that if that's what the dragon wanted, he might as well make Dragonien the biggest deal ever.
