First Time?

Coevolution Ch.6

"...and then I broke up with her."

Flynn cleared their throat. "Uh, how?" They chuckled nervously, eyes darting around the room. Knowing Sylvia, Jonah's ex was sure to already have a plan of action.

"Bro, I have no clue how I even walked away from that." Jonah sighed and sunk down into his chair, opposite Flynn. "I was like, 'Syl, we're done.' And then I just. Booked it outta there. No way I was sticking around for that."

Admittedly, that's what Flynn would have done too. Though they were generally regarded as one of the toughest people on campus, no one was any match for Sylvia, not even Flynn. There was something about her that instantly disarmed anyone who stood up against her. Jonah especially--the sessions of hypnosis he'd had with Sylvia had done a number on his personality around her, demoting him to a level of submissiveness that was honestly terrifying. Flynn had been wanting Sylvia and Jonah to break up from the start--and Flynn had been very quick to tell Jonah that. Of course, being drunk in love had gotten the better of their roommate, and though the relationship had ended as a bit of a clusterfuck, Flynn was glad Jonah was free of the dynamic.

"...you okay?" Flynn asked, wanting to break the silence. Jonah was visibly tense.

The Jolteon shrugged. "Hell if I know. I feel like I should be scared of what she could do to me? But like. I actually feel free for once. So there's that."

"Makes sense." The silence returned. Jonah had pulled out his phone and was typing away, clearly having moved on from the conversation. Flynn rose from their chair, entered their bedroom, and pulled their guitar case onto their bed. They weren't quite sure why, if not that they needed something to do.

The golden latches gave way with three satisfying clicks, one for each. Flynn opened the faux leather lid with ease as that familiar guitar smell surrounded them. They lifted the guitar--Charlie, they liked to call him--out of the case and rested him on their lap.

Check the strings. In-tune as always. Charlie was always so dependable. A few experimental notes and a chord and they were off, singing one of their originals.

And so I've fallen, damned and broken,

Bound to pave the path you've chosen.

Because of you, I'm left here chokin',

Reduced to the fucked-up mess you've left behind.

All the stars, they're burnin' out,

They're nothin' to the flame of my self-doubt.

Can't you see what I am without you?

Nothin' but a fucked-up mess you've left behind.

"Have I heard that one before?" Flynn was pulled out of the zone by Jonah, leaning against their door frame. "I don't recognize it. Your stuff hits hard, yaknow."

Flynn chuckled. "Haven't played that one since... high school? Wrote it about that goddamned mental institution. Guess Sylvia reminded me of it. Sweet on the outside, corrupted within."

Jonah snorted. "Damn, dude. I mean, you're right, but still." He entered the room and sat down backward in Flynn's desk chair, propping himself up on the back with his arms. "Can I ask a weird question?"

Flynn set Charlie down gently in his case. "Shoot."

"How..." Jonah hesitated. "How do you know if. You're bi?"

"Bi? You?" Flynn raised an eyebrow. "There's a joke out there, that if you're asking if you're gay, you're gay. But. If the word fits, it fits."

The chair squeaked under Jonah's weight as he shifted. "Makes sense." A pause. "Maybe I do like guys."

"More power to ya," Flynn said, snapping the case shut. "Never cared much about labels, myself." They slid Charlie back against the wall, where Charlie typically slept in between play sessions. "Why? Sylvia got you questioning?"

"Well, you know her, how she... misgenders you constantly. And there was that whole thing with her ex--her other ex, I mean. Maybe her severe homophobia brought something out in me."

"You gotta crush on someone?"

Jonah was visibly caught off-guard by the question. "Um." He started a sentence several times, but failed to get past the first syllable. "Well. Can you, uh, like someone who's non-binary, and still be bi?"

He's talking about me, isn't he? Flynn shrugged. "Like I said, never really cared for labels. I have a boyfriend though."

A blink, and a blush. "O-oh, I didn't mean--uh, I mean, you do?"

"Yaknow Sylvia's ex?"

"Oh."

"Yeah."

Jonah stared at the floor.

"Dunno though, could be an open relationship."

At that, Jonah turned beet-red. "I. Uh."

Flynn smirked. "I can talk to Val about it."

Jonah swallowed. "You don't need to, it was stupid of me to ask."

Just when Flynn was going to respond, a knock sounded on their dorm room door. The two of them froze.

"You expecting someone?" Flynn asked.

"No, you?"

"No."

Flynn left their bedroom and made for the door. They paused, then opened it slowly.

"Hey. It's, uh. Been a while."

Umbre and Flynn stared at each other for what felt like an eternity to them. After a year, now they come back?

"Oh hey. Who's this?" Jonah asked upon entering the room, oblivious to the tension between the two at the door.

"A friend," Umbre said at the same time Flynn said, "My ex."

Jonah looked from one to the other. "...right. At least let them in, Flynn, geez."

Flynn nodded, their gaze unwavering from staring Umbre dead in the eyes. "Yeah. Come, uh, in." Cautiously, they stepped aside to allow Umbre entrance.

Umbre didn't move. "I'm sorry." They had grabbed their arm with their other paw, as if trying to tug themself inside. "I never got to apologize."

The Flareon stole a glance at Jonah, who seemed utterly bewildered by the whole exchange. "It's okay," Flynn said, though more so to Jonah's face than Umbre's. "I don't blame you. Never did."

"Blame them for what?" Jonah blurted.

Startled, Umbre seemed to register the Jolteon's presence for the first time. "O-oh. It's. It's nothing. Just..." They swallowed their words.

"Fainting from me sticking my dick in your ass isn't nothing," Flynn said, and instantly regretted it when they saw the look of horror on Umbre's face. "B-but I--No, that's not--"

Umbre sighed. "No, I've heard enough. Thanks." They started down the hallway, pulling small devices out of their ears.

Following them out in the hall, Flynn grabbed their arm. "Umbre wait--"

Umbre ripped their arm away from Flynn's grasp, sending the devices they were holding flying. They skittered down the hall. Umbre flashed a wide-eyed glare at Flynn before practically diving for them. They collected the earbud-like objects in their paws, held one up to their ear, then the other. Appearing relieved, they slipped the devices into a case in their pocket, then whipped around to face Flynn.

Their paws moved as quickly and sharply as lightning bolts, too fast for Flynn to discern any kind of meaning aside from sheer anger. Tears were welling up in Umbre's eyes as the movements became more sporadic and rigid, before ending off with a decisive flick of a closed claw outward from under the chin, directed toward Flynn. A simple phrase Flynn could understand.

«Fuck you.»

Umbre turned and stormed off, leaving Flynn stunned in the middle of the hallway, Jonah having seen the whole exchange from their doorway.

"Could you understand that?" Jonah asked, pulling Flynn from their stupor.

"Only the last word." Flynn sighed, and stumbled back into their bedroom.

Charlie always seemed to find the right words to sing.

And so you've come back, damned and broken,

Bound to remind me of what I've stolen.

Because of me, you're left there chokin',

Wanna solve the fucked-up mess I've left behind.

All the stars, they're burnin' out,

They're nothin' to the flame of my self-doubt.

Can't you see what I am without you?

Nothin' but a fucked-up mess we've left behind.
