When Insomniacs Dream

Coevolution Ch.0

"You ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever--AAAAAUGH--"

"Fuck, you're tight. Sorry 'bout that."

"J-just w-wasn't e-expecting--"

"Shhhh, just take it, slut."

"I... I don't..."

"Oh fuck, I'm gonna--"

"..."

Umbre shot up with a start, breathing heavily. They scanned the dark room illuminated only by the faint moonlight that dared to seep through the deep violet curtains. Next to the window, their alarm clock glared down at them from the top of their dresser. It's 2:38 in the morning, the violently green numbers scolded them. Why aren't you asleep?

They sighed. «You tell me,» they challenged, glaring back at the clock in indignation.

The clock offered only silence in response.

With no other information to distract them, Umbre became acutely aware of the sensation between their legs. They sighed. Sounds about right. The same nightmare for several weeks and without fail they get an erection every time.

Groaning, Umbre slid out of bed. They may as well have gotten up at that point; it would have taken three hours to get back to sleep anyway, and by then the sunlight would have woken them up anyway.

Their dorm room always felt more comforting at night. As a dark-type Pokémon, Umbre had a natural inclination toward the dark to begin with, but actually seeing the familiar environment around them gave them a sense of security that was only further accentuated after a bad dream. They pressed their footpaws into the carpet, appreciating the feeling of the little bits of fluff tickling their pads. Taking a deep breath, they stood, pulled on a shirt and pants over their boxers, and soundlessly ventured into the common room.

As if on autopilot, Umbre navigated themself to the kitchenette by the door. Milk, in the mug, in the microwave. A simple routine that the Umbreon was by now almost robotic in carrying out. Two minutes passed, punctuated by the decisive "FOOD IS READY" that scrolled across the blue-light display. A dip of the claw confirmed what Umbre already knew to be true: their milk heated to perfect temperature. Mug in paw, they turned away from the counter, only to be greeted by the silhouette of their roommate, Levi, standing in his doorway and looking directly at Umbre.

Umbre flinched at the sudden sight of another individual. «You've got to stop doing that,» Umbre signed curtly. Shaking their head, they wandered over to the sitting area and flopped down on the couch.

«You've got to stop making so much damn noise this late at night,» Levi retorted. «Some of us have working ears.»

Umbre fixed their roommate with a glare. «Rub it in, why don't you? You could at least put some pants on.» They glanced at the tight boxers Levi wore and willed their brain not to find that erection-worthy.

Levi smirked. «Nah. It's hot in here anyway.» The Leafeon flopped down next to Umbre, propping his feetpaws up on the clear glass coffee table. «Can't sleep, huh?»

A sip of warm milk could only reasonably stall a response for so long. «No.» Umbre sighed. «Nightmares again. Y'know. The usual. What's your excuse?»

«I haven't fallen asleep yet. Been coding all night.» Levi chuckled guiltily. «You should probably talk to someone about that. The nightmares. I mean, I'm no therapist, but if you ever need someone to vent to...»

«Thanks,» Umbre signed, hiding their face in their mug. «It's just... a bit of trauma from my past I have difficulty talking about.»

«What stops you from talking about it?» It was an innocent enough question, but it made Umbre's thought process completely freeze. What was stopping them?

«It's just... awkward, I guess.»

Levi bobbed his head as if in understanding. «It's about sex, isn't it?» His face spread into a devilish grin.

Umbre remained motionless.

«Look. I'm like, super chill when it comes to sex. Hell, I'm too chill. Honestly I've been meaning to ask you ab--»

Umbre waved Levi's paws away. «Look, I don't... I barely know you, we shouldn't be talking about this...»

This time it was Levi's turn to freeze. «I just thought...»

«Just. Leave me alone. Go back to your code. Whatever.» Umbre stood, set their mug on the counter, and started for their room.

Before they could reach their door, however, Levi grabbed Umbre's arm. «Wait. I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to strike a nerve. I just need you to know you can trust me.»

Umbre softened slightly, and sighed. «I know.» They pulled free from Levi's arm and, meeting no further resistance, went back to their room.

"What stops you from talking about it?"

Sinking into their bed once more, Umbre saw Levi's words flash across their vision multiple times over. For starters, it was about sex. That's not something you just talk to people about. But... it was also about feeling unsatisfied. Flynn, was their name. Umbre's first, and only, hook-up. Their first... and only... experience with sex.

They had thought at the time it was something they'd wanted to experience, but everything leading up to the moment was nothing but trepidation and anxiety--that culminated in wanting to have stopped the whole way through, up until their partner had orgasmed inside of them and they...

They'd fallen unconscious. They guessed their brain had been protecting them from the bulk of the discomfort they had felt, but that didn't change the horrible feelings afterwards that matched no other they had felt before. Flynn had been less than helpful. A glass of water and an "Um... sorry, I guess," was hardly enough to even come close to making Umbre feel any better. After a painfully awkward agreement to never speak of the incident again, the two had parted ways.

In the weeks since Umbre had only seen Flynn twice, from afar. So badly they wanted to walk up to them, apologize, try to materialize some excuse for what happened. But they wouldn't. They couldn't.

A tap on Umbre's shoulder pulled them out of their thoughts. They rolled over to see Levi standing over them. «Sorry,» Levi signed, hesitating. «I wanted to make sure you were okay...?»

Umbre shook their head. «It's fine. I'm fine. At least... I will be. Don't worry about it.»

Levi's shoulders dropped. «Okay. If you say so.» He turned, as if to leave, when like an afterthought, he added, «Are we friends?»

«I... I hope so.» Umbre smiled. «You're a nice person to be friends with.»

The Leafeon smiled back. «Thanks.» They turned back to the door and started to exit.

Thinking quickly, Umbre opened their mouth. "Stay." The word hung in midair between them. Levi had jumped at the sudden vocalization, and slowly, turned back to the dark-type.

"Okay," Levi mouthed. Two syllables that were easy to recognize but carried so much meaning. Okay. Levi came back to the bed and sat down next to Umbre. «What do you need?» he signed.

«Hug?» Umbre opened their arms slowly, not expecting Levi to practically tackle them, sending the two of them down on the bed, Levi on top of Umbre.

Levi blushed. «Sorry,» he signed, rolling off of them.

Between them was a silent agreement not to discuss what they had both felt against their legs.
