Prologue

The fire was a living evil thing. Orange, red and yellow were the only colours she could see. Her eyes ran with tears from the smoke that billowed around the flame like a partner of its deathly embrace. Her ears swivelled on her head as sound assaulted her. Cracks and groans of buildings being consumed. The echoing screams of those trapped inside and the scent of burning flesh made her gag.

She stumbled out from between to houses as they fell into themselves, fuelling the furnace that was her mountain home. Soot and dirt clung to her fur making her dark grey coat black. The cub coughed and held one paw to her face trying to clear some clean air to breath. Keeping her eyes on her feet paws she managed to make it out of the close packed houses into the forest that bordered it. She turned and gasped at the sight.

The night was on fire. The moonless sky was aglitter with stars that shone like pin pricks of light through a heavy black blanket. Everything was aflame. As she watched the small avenue she escaped through was blocked as with a scream of protested and a echoing boom, the house beside it gave way , reaching for its neighbour with deathly fingers of heat. She choked with horror as through the debris a burning figure tore its way from the wreckage. The burning wolf was shrieking as the fire dripped off him with pieces of cooked flesh. He fell and convulsed on the ground near where he got up.

Nesca ran forward with help on her mind and tore her skirt, heedless of the nakedness, to beat out the flames eating the elder wolf alive. She sobbed as her skirt caught and went up feeding the fire. She fell back and cried out in grief and fear as the shrieks subsided until only the sizzle of burning skin remained.

Like the wolf in front of her, slowly the screams and cries died out as the night wore on towards morning. As the first rays of light breached the clearing where the village had been, the fires had burnt down. The young female cub had stared through the night as her home, her life, everything she had ever known had crumbled to soot and ash. Her eyes were round and dry, her fur caked and clumped, and her body stiff from her unmoving witnessing. It was only when she saw movement through the smoke did she herself move.

"Mama?!" she cried out her young heart hoping for a miracle. She was weak as she tried to stand and then ran, her legs quaking beneath her. She forced herself to move trying to hurry. In the dawn light everything was filtered with smoke. Black timbers littered the village and charred corpses could be seen where the wolves had tried to get out of their homes. Some buildings had fallen on each other or onto the roads and avenues. Some had collapsed on themselves or smoked with still burning heat. All the foliage in the village had gone up and the streets were barley recognisable. Fresh tears spilt as she went through the streets calling the names of her loved ones and the ones she had known all her life.

"Mama!" she cried, "Papa? Eric! Millie! Mrs Anne!" She didn't dare go into the smoking ruins that still creaked and groaned. She increased her speed as her home came into view. Its left side had fell in and its leant towards the space. Her familiar front lawn was gone blackened earth leaving no trace. She shook her head in denial and she missed her step falling to her knees.

"M...Mama!" she stuttered and threw herself up and forward, all thoughts of safety forgotten. The house roared in protest as she flew through the door, knocking it off its damaged hinges. The furniture was in smoking ruins, but that was not why she threw back her head and howled. It was because, under the main support beam for the roof was a familiar face. She rushed forward, ignoring the groans of the house that held together with little more then luck. She stroked the soft fur of her fathers cheek gently a whimper coming through her muzzle. She sniffed and the tears bubbled over again as she slowly gathered up what she could of her fathers upper torso into her lap. She rocked back and forth patting him and crooning softly.

that's how she was found.

"Hey I got another live one!" a hoarse voice shouted. Shock had numbed the girl to everything but the still warm body in her arms. Shadows fell across her fathers face but she crooned on in grief remembering the strong hands that had always guided, always protected. All gone.

She snarled when they grabbed her arm but the grip was strong. She struggled against the hands that held her and shrieked as they pulled her up and away from her father. His head slipped from her lap, hitting the floor with a sickening thud.

"No! Papa! I got to stay with him!" she cried and begged as they dragged her from her home.

"Papa! PAPA!! NO! PAPA!!!!!!" she screamed until they silenced her with a hard blow to the back of her head. Unforgiving hands dragged her to the village square. Through the daze she saw three horse drawn carriages and two horse drawn cages. Both cages were relatively filled with charcoal covered wolves, most supporting injuries or burns. Everyone had the same dead look to their eyes. Without ceremony the ruff hands threw her into one of these cages. The current occupants moved out of the way as she landed . Still dazed she looked up in time to see the door close.

"that's the last one. Lets move out."

She tried to move her body.

"wait" she whimpered. Dragging herself up to a sitting position using the bars. She whimpered again her eyes focusing on a small figure huddled against the well.

"wait." she managed to say a little louder as the horses neighed and whips cracked, her cage jostling.

"Wait. Millie!" she cried out reaching her paw through the bars towards her little baby sister. Millie heard her and came out from her hiding spot. Her fur was singed and her arm hung uselessly from her side. Her other paw was outstretched to her older sister as she was taken away.

"Millie!" the girl cried and her baby sister started weakly toddling after the cages. The girl shook the bars and reached again.

"Millie! Wait, wait Millie's there! Millie!" she shock the bars again growling in frustration as her sister fell behind.

"No! No! Millie! MILLIE!" She howled.

NESCA!!!!!

Nesca woke with a start, sitting bolt upright in bed. Her chest heaved with her breath and her heart raced, beating so hard it was almost and impossibility that the others in her garrison didn't wake. Her large emerald green eyes were slightly luminescent in the dark and her large canine ears were slicked back into her light grey ruff. Her long muzzles was open as she panted, her tongue slipping out to faster cool herself. She leant over her crossed legs and placed her oversized paws to her face, being careful of her sharp claws. Her single thin sheet was racked up at the end of the cot and she wrapped her tail around herself.

As her breathing slowed so did her heart and she could think clearly again. She resisted the impulse to growl lightly to herself. It would only wake her fellow slaves. She closed her eyes in frustration though and exhaled sharply. She thought she was over that particular nightmare. She was only seven when they had taken her. Almost eleven years ago now.

She sighed and threw her legs over the side of her bed, flexing her foot paws thoughtfully. That dream should be locked up with the rest of the things she was not aloud to think of. She stood and stretched her long lithe body carefully. He wanted to feel the pull of her muscles over bones, the quiet force of her strength taut under her skin. It was relaxing to concentrate of the healthy strength of her body. Concentrating on the physical helped her forget the emotional. She stretched up as high as she could go then bend down to touch her paws to her pads. Rolling her neck she stretched her leg back at the knee, catching her ankle behind her and holding it to her bum for a few moments. She did the same to the other leg before stretching her left arm to her right and holding her right elbow with her left, stretching her arm and shoulder. She did the same to the other. Finally she breathed in deeply through her nose, taking in all the scents around her, her hands following her breath in a round movement. She exhaled through her mouth, letting that breath take all her worries, fear, thoughts, conscience, basically anything that made her and individual. Last thing she did before she became active was push all the emotions of others from her body. A shudder fell over her secret ability and she became still. When she opened her eyes there were dead things, hollow. She was ready for another day.
