#3 of Greener Pastures Series

Here's part three, after I fought to rewrite part two which failed to save as a draft the first time.

Oh well, we're moving along right along.

I didn't remember falling asleep in the early morning.

As Eddie and I had finished putting away all of our stuff, we found the set of blackout curtains he had brought, and put them up in the window. I was yawning as we finished with the curtains, and was laying down in bed not long after.

Now, as I felt myself wake up I groaned. I opened eye, my surroundings blurry, and closed my eye back. I would have liked five more minutes, but I had no idea what time it was, and how long Eddie and I were going to be outside before our plan would need to change.

I opened both my eyes now, then squeezed them shut to start shaking off the blurriness I saw. I looked across the room at Eddie, almost not able to make the wolf out in the darkness of the room. I licked my lips then, and weakly said,

"Eddie!"

The wolf was snoring in his bed, one arm hanging off of the bed with the other stuffed into his underwear. I looked at his paw, then looked at the half-mast cock he was holding onto. The tip was just peeking out of his underwear, and I looked away with a swallow.

"Eddie!" I said his name louder now.

That worked, as the wolf snorted himself awake, sitting up and whipping his paw out of underwear like he'd been caught doing it in public. He looked at me, then let his ears flatten some as he growled, raising his arms into a stretch. As Eddie concluded his stretch I turned my head to look at the clock on the desk. It was 7:35 PM.

"Fuuuck," I put my face down on my bed.

"Why," Eddie paused to yawn, his ears flattening again, "did you yell my name?"

"I didn't" my voice was muffled from the mattress, "normal tone."

Eddie only grumbled as he put both legs on the floor then, and stood up. I turned my head to look at him, and pushed myself up with my paws, leaning by ass back into a downward-dog-esque stretch. Moving my legs I sat up in my bed, rubbing an eye with my paw. I still had a t-shirt on, and my pants from last night were tossed carelessly next to my hamper.

With a yawn I put my own feet on the floor, and sleepily walked myself over to my closet. I pulled it open, and heard Eddie doing the same behind me. _don't turn and look at him change _my brain told me. I didn't, as I pulled out a pair of sweatpants, with a small hole in the left knee. I pulled the sweatpants on, deciding that underwear was optional for now; I'd put some on if I really had to. Seeing as well as we did in the dark, a lamp in the dorm room wasn't yet a need for the two of us.

"We gonna go get books?" Eddie asked my back.

"Yeah, and look around campus?" I turned to face him with my own question.

Eddie nodded then, but put a paw to his stomach. I heard it rumble, then realized I was already hungry myself. Adjusting my sweatpants I went to pull at my shirts neckline, feeling it was to tight. I put a paw back to my face to rub it again, and put my other paw on my head, trying to flatten out some of the silver hair I knew was sticking up. It was growing longer than I would have liked it on the sides and the back, and made a mental note to get a haircut soon.

As Eddie was pulling up a pair of black jeans that almost matched his soft coat of fur, I reached to the end of my bed and pulled on my coat. A green patch on the elbow had been my attempt at fixing the garment after I'd ripped the elbow two winters ago. The patch was holding quite well, and I was proud of it.

I turned to watch Eddie shut his closet doors then, the wolf letting out another yawn as he put a paw to his face, rubbing his eyes. He walked in a tired trace over to the desk we were sharing, and picked up his coat from the back of the swiveling chair that was there. Pulling on one sleeve, then the other, Eddie put both paws to his face, rubbing his nose with one. As I looked at him a felt my face was to warm, and I looked away, walking to the door. I had a... whatever it was that I had on Eddie. We were best friends, had been since elementary school. Maybe it was natural to feel a certain way about your best guy friend after so many years.

Now as I pulled open the door to the dorms, Eddie, seeming almost reluctant, walked his slow pace over to the door. He offered me a smile as he walked through the door, and I patted him on the back as I walked into the hallway, shutting the door behind me.

"Whersa book store?" Eddie yawned again.

"Uh..." I paused to rub my eye, "right."

"Like on the right campus? South?" Eddie asked.

"Yeah. Right," I only nodded.

I wasn't fully awake yet, and probably wouldn't be until I'd gotten a cup of hot coffee into my system. Eddie and I can both eat regular food, it just isn't the same as drinking blood. While I like to drink my fill of blood, Eddie will go out of his way to eat breakfasts foods like bacon, eggs, ham, sausage, hash brows, and pancakes.

Walking down the hallway Eddie and I worked our way to the corner, and turned left. In the darkness of the dorm room I hadn't been able to tell how bright it was outside. Clouds were my best friend on any day, that was for certain. As we reached the end of the hall Eddie and I turned left, and saw the dorms front door. The glass pants that went from top to bottom of the two doors showed us the grass out front, and the cloudy, dark gray clouds of the sky overhead

"Oh what a beautiful day," I said.

"Best kind of day," Eddie agreed.

We were further down the hall now, passing the laundry rooms, then hitting the front door and stepping outside. I reached behind my head to grab my hood, looking up at the cloudy skies. As if daring me keep looking, a distant rumble of thunder sounded from not to far off, and I scoffed, letting go of my hood.

"Great day to walk around," I muttered loudly.

Eddie only let himself laugh as we started to walk down the sidewalk, heading for campus. Other furs were out and about, most of them walking around or standing and talking closer to the main campus. I watched them all move about, seeing mouths move and tails flick, the excited chatter of the upcoming term seeming to be the only thing on anyone's mind.

Coming down the sidewalk I stuffed my paws into my coat pockets, and Eddie reached a paw behind his back to scratch an itch. We walked closer to the campus, the chatter in the air getting louder, but easier to pick out. Not far off, three wolves in letterman jackets were standing around, one of them lazily spinning a football in a paw. I saw them from the corner of my eye, and as one of them looked at Eddie and I, he looked at his the other tow, pointing them out to us.

"Three guys at my right," I muttered to Eddie.

"Who you think they'll hurl the ball at?" he asked me.

"If it's you I'll catch it anyways," I said with a smirk.

"Go for it," Eddie lowly chuckled.

I could still see the wolves on the right, and sure enough as one of them were turning to face Eddie and I, he called out,

"Yo! On the right dude!" and threw the football.

It came a little faster than I had expected it to, but I turned as the hunky leather oval came to sail towards me. I reached out with one paw, and managed to catch the football on one end, pulling my arm back a little so as not to see so overly impressive.

"Nice catch," Eddie whispered.

I only grinned at the wolves, the one who'd thrown the ball putting his paws on his hips, all of them open-mouth gaping at me. I wiggled the ball in my paw, then threw it back to them with a lazy spiral. The wolf who'd thrown it originally didn't move, and another with a lighter orange coat stepped in to catch the football before his friend took it to his snout.

As I went back to walk next to Eddie, we walked up to a row of planters on either side of us, coming into a courtyard that had a fountain in it. Past the fountain on the other side was the main campus building, and other buildings all around were most likely classrooms. I looked around the campus, mostly taking in all the other furs who stood around talking. Nearby two opossums sat on a bench, both males who's tails lazily hung down and coiled around the others. I held up a paw to them, one of them smiling and returning the wave.

"This place is huge," Eddie mused then.

"Man, did said they built that other campus and these extra dorms over the last like... uh five years," I said.

"Fucking nuts," Eddie shook his head gently.

We were passing through the courtyard now, and as we came to walk up a slight incline to the main building I reached out a paw to scratch my head. Returning the paw to my pocket I walked past two wolves with white coats, but bundled up in jackets, cuddled in close to one another. Eddie was yawning on my left as we got nearer to the main building. A sign sitting just to the left of the doors said, "Books, supplies: library. Admissions: second floor."

"Who would come for admission this late in the year?" I asked myself.

"Shit furs will wait until the last day to do admissions sometimes," Eddie said.

"Nah, gotta be prepared," I said.

"Nick, you couldn't find any of your jackets on the last day we were at home," Eddie looked at me as we came to the doors.

"That must have been your other best friend," I nodded as I looked at Eddie.

Now the wolf rolled his eyes as we were coming to the main building. Eddie reached the doors first and pull them open, and we both stepped inside. I took a breath then, taking in the change of cold air to the warmer temperature inside. I pulled at the neck of my shirt again, taking my paws from my coat to put them in my sweatpants pockets, pushing the sides of my coat out of the way.

"Yo, library's right there," Eddie pointed a thumb to his left.

"Cool," I was turning to follow after him.

We walked a few shorter steps to the libraries entrance but then I stopped, reaching out to tap Eddie's shoulder.

"Book list," I had a note of panic in my voice.

Eddie's eye widened some then, and the two of us started to check pockets. I cursed myself for not thinking of my list when I'd woken up, but as I checked my inside coat pocket I felt folded up papers. I pulled out the papers, flipping them open. Eddie had produced a sheet of paper of his own, but he only grumbled,

"Fucking schedule your not what I need."

I looked past my own schedule, and then saw my list of books. I laughed a relieved laugh, kissing the paper. Eddie sighed as he stuffed his schedule back into a pocket, and looked at my list with me as we both resumed out walk to the library. Eddie still looked over my shoulder as we walked into the library, then I handed him my list as I memorized the first five books I would need, two for two of my classes and one for my third class. I would get the others when Eddie had finished with my list.

Pausing at an aisle of books I sniffed the air, not smelling blood this time. Instead I smelled coffee, and heard the spout that dispensed the hot morning beverage maybe five feet away. I walked past one aisle as Eddie was muttering about a book he didn't think he would need, and I went down another aisle. Down the aisle, standing at the coffee dispenser I could hear as if I stood next to it myself, was a collie dog with brown hair. She had her back to me, but as I walked down the aisle, and sniffled the air again, the girls scent was familiar. Like I'd smelled her before, maybe even If I hadn't meant too.

I paused on the aisle I was on, remembering I needed a book from here. I looked at the right shelf I was in front of, having subconsciously walked myself down this particular aisle. I looked the the shelf letters, H, I, J, and K, then pulled off a thick book with a smooth brown cover. Tucking the book under my arm I walked down the rest of the aisle, then came to walk up to the coffee machine.

It was, as she turned to look at me, Janny, the collie who'd bummed a cigarette off of me in the parking lot. She reached up to her ears to pull out a pair of headphones, then said,

"Hi!" in a hushed voice.

I turned my head to look at her, then smiled and held up a waving paw.

"Hi!" I said in the same hushed voice, "how's that coffee?"

"Oh, it sucks," Janny nodded, "but the only other place to get it is the Starbucks on the main building of the other campus, and I wasn't keen on walking across the parking lot this late in the day. You just wake up or something?" she asked then.

"Yeah," I nodded then chuckled lightly, "Eddie and I, my buddy you met the other day, are nocturnal, doing the night class thing."

Now Janny laughed, the coffee spout hissing as it stopped dispensing her coffee. She reached out to pick it up, then as she moved it out of the way she asked,

"So night class and you sleep all day. What are you guys, like vampires or something?"

As Janny was picking up a sugar dispenser I felt the color in my face flush, my face getting hot. I swallowed, then as Janny looked back at me, she reached out and pated my chest a couple of times, laughing.

"Dude, I was joking! You look sick, relax!" Janny's voice had a nice tone to it.

I laughed with her then, my tones almost forced and definitely not my own. I let my face start to regain its color as I stepped up to the coffee machine, and looked at the options. Decaf, regular, and cappuccino. I licked my lips at the cappuccino option pulling a coffee cup out from the stack to the right of the coffee machine.

Janny was snapping the lid down on her cup, then raised the beverage to her nose, taking a sniff. She made a face, but only looked at me as I thumbed the button for the cappuccino option. I licked my lips again, and Janny said,

"How many classes you taking this semester?"

"Uh," I closed one eye, thinking for a second, "Four, but one of them is during the daytime so I have to get it changed. What about you?"

"Mostly daytime," Janny nodded, "but I've got class at night on Wednesday, I think Eagles is her name?"

"Oh Engles," I nodded and looked at Janny, "What time? Mines at 9:30 PM."

"Oh, same!" Janny looked up from her coffee, a smile cresting her face.

"Cool!" I smiled at her, glancing at my coffee as it started to wind down the brewing process, "What are you here to study?" I asked her then.

"Phycology, I'm had the brain train that I wanted to be a therapist for the last year, so I figured this was a good a time as any to start working that out. You?"

"History stuff," I nodded as I picked up my coffee. I took a sip as the steam crested my face, then said, "I have like a fascination with museums so I feel like working there would be really cool."

"You a big history nerd?" Janny asked then, her eyes bright.

"The biggest," I smiled at her, a sly motion of my mouth.

"Cool," she nodded, then glanced at her books, "so hey you've got a free paw. Can you take down a number I was thinking of and need to remember?"

"Oh, yeah," I nodded as I set my coffee cup down, then poised my paw to form on invisible pen, "shoot," I said with a dumb laugh.

"It's a seven digit number, you get enough ink?" Janny was still looking at me.

Now I looked up from my paw, and Janny smiled at me. Her soft brown eyes looked back at my own golden irises, and I said,

"Are you asking me out?"

Now Janny's face colored some, the white fur on her cheeks and snout getting pink. "Yes," she whispered to me.

"In that case, I've got enough ink for the whole week," I smiled at her, a fluttering sensation working its way into my chest.

Janny gave me her number than, which I committed to memory d alone, then pulled out my phone to put her number in it for real. I hit dial when I was done, and I heard a faint buzzing from Janny back pocket. Janny reached her paw back, skillfully hitting the silence button with her coffee cup still in paw, and looked at me, still smiling.

"I like history, but I'm a goof when it comes to remembering it," she admitted then, "you like math?"

"I do not," I smiled, then laughed. I stopped as I looked around and Janny giggled, coffee cup hiding her smile.

"Your smiles nice," I told her then, "if your offering to help me with math, I hope I'll see more of it."

Now Janny was a shade of pink in her cheeks, and said,

"Your smooth man," she complimented me.

"Thanks," I smiled at her, my own face warm.

Janny cleared her throat then, and said,

"Uh, I guess I need to grab the rest of my books before it gets to late. Are you doing anything tonight?"

_Tonight?! She likes you! Drink her fucking blood! _my brain yelled at me.

"No," I shook my head, "I'm free."

"Cool," Janny smiled, "There's a library off the left of the courtyard if you leave like out the back door, I guess?" Janny was pointed her coffee over her head, "if your up for it we could do some studying before the semester kicks off? Get a head start?"

_Yeees! Drink her fucking blood! _my brain yelled at me.

"Sounds great!" I smiled at her, my cheeks pink.

"Great! Call it, uh..." Janny paused, "like 9:40? It'll be after sundown."

"That works," I nodded, smiling at her.

"Okay!" Janny still smiled at me, then stepped past me, holding her coffee up to her mouth to take a drink.

I turned to watch her walk away, taking a quiet breath of her scent. It smelled like her, but at the same time it was familiar, like I'd meet Janny before, or smelled someone who was exactly like her. I shook my head then, and as I walked away with my coffee in a paw I found Eddie, three aisles away looking for a book.

"I," I said to him as I walked up to the wolf, "have a thing tonight."

"I heard," Eddie's ears flicked as he glanced at me, smiling, "that girl from the parking lot, yeah?"

"you eavesdropped on me!" I recoiled, a false look of shock on my face.

"I did, how could I?" Eddie frowned at me then, his eyes widening.

Now I only rolled my eyes, and looked at the aisle of books I was on. I needed my math textbook, another history book, and then two others to make the five I needed. Putting my coffee to my lips I took a scalding hot drink, then gasped before telling Eddie,

"I'll catch up with you when I got all my books."

"Word," he nodded, "I'll get your list back before we get out of here, make sure we got em' all."

I nodded to Eddie then, and as I turned around to walk back down the aisle and head to another aisle, I let the butterflies in my chest keep beating their wings. I had to be careful with Janny, as much as I was starting to like her. Developing a constant source of blood from the same someone could lead to them growing a strong bond to you, called a blood-bond. Janny would stick by my side night and day any chance she could, seduced by the ecstaccy she derived from me feeding from her.

That was assuming I feed from Janny in the first place, and I had no intention of letting the thought cross my mind.
