#44 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo battles Flannery, explores Route 111 desert and finds some fossils.

As I returned to Lavaridge Town I had my Pokemon healed up after some extensive training and then as I could only bring six Pokemon with me into the hot springs I decided to use Pokemon that would battle against Flannery and some who had worked extensively hard. Not too say that some Pokemon hadn't worked hard. I decided to bring Grovyle into the hot springs with Marshtomp, Swellow, Gardevoir, Grumpig and Swablu. I would have liked to bring Combusken into the hot springs but as a Fire Type he may have felt uncomfortable in the water compared the the chosen Pokemon. At that I entered the empty hot springs and changed into some comfortable, relaxing clothes and entered. Once inside, I grabbed the six Pokeballs and released everyone out.

"Come out everyone!" Grovyle, Marshtomp, Swellow, Gardevoir, Grumpig and Swablu appeared expecting to battle someone but when they saw that their trainer was relaxing in the hot springs they knew they were getting a break before the gym battle. "Take a break everyone. You've all been working so hard you deserve a break." At that Grovyle, stepped into the hot springs before he rested down, his upper body resting against the wall as he closed his eyes enjoying the sensation of the warm water relaxing his shoulders and back. Marshtomp followed suit, he enjoyed the warm water more than I had anticipated and eagerly dived in assuming a similar position to Grovyle. Grovyle opened one eye and stared at Marshtomp who grinned back at him.

Swellow briefly entered the warm water and enjoyed the sensation of water on his feathers, before he decided he would perch on some rocks and get some sunshine. He looked utterly relaxed perched on those rocks that I was almost envious of his position. Gardevoir and Grumpig both being Psychic Types seemed to have formed a strong bond of friendship and entered the hot springs together. I could tell the warm water was a welcome relief after some tough battles and it would help the Psychic Types relax and strengthen their minds. Finally Swablu, decided that the best place to be, was on my head, but he did explore and land on Grovyle's head, much to Grovyle's annoyance, but he was one who acted like it didn't bother him at all.

I passed the time by simply closing my eyes and enjoying the sensation of the warm water over my body and I could of fallen asleep. I didn't know how much time had past when I felt like my Pokemon were plotting something. They definitely were, Grovyle opened one eye again and watched as his trainer seemed to drift asleep and smirked at the sight. He nudged Marshtomp and gestured towards me and Marshtomp grinned as well. Before too long, Gardevoir and Grumpig had been roped into their little plan. Swellow ever the curious Pokemon decided he wanted in on the fun. Swablu sensing that something was about to happen decided that he would abandon his trainers head and rest further away.

Turns out Swablu made the right call and suddenly, I felt a bunch of Pokemon push me awake, splashing me with warm water. I sputtered in shock before looking at the laughing Pokemon. Well, mainly Grovyle, Marshtomp and Swellow. Meanwhile, Gardevoir, Grumpig and Swablu looked slightly apologetic but I could see their eyes shining with amusement. "So it's going to be like that huh?" I laughed and retaliated, outnumbered I splashed the Pokemon and Grovyle sputtered with shock before grinning once more. This then turned into a all out war with no holds barred. Eventually though, we stopped and the Pokemon decided enough was enough and they wanted to go and battle the gym leader and get stronger for their beloved trainer.

I grabbed a towel and dried off as quick as I could while my Pokemon looked away giving their trainer some privacy. When I finished up I returned them all to their Pokeballs and began deciding on what Pokemon would be best suited against Flannery. From my research I had done prior, I knew that Flannery used, A Slugma, nicknamed Meg, a Magcargo nicknamed Mag and her strongest Pokemon Torkoal. The Pokemon that had a type advantage against Fire Types were, Marshtomp, Lombre, Pelipper, Nosepass, Lairon, Camerupt, Lunatone and Solrock. Eventually, I decided that I would use, Marshtomp as he had a very good typing against Fire Types. Then there was Camerupt being a Fire Type would be a fun challenge. Finally having Pelipper attack from the air would be a good advantage.

At that I entered the gym and announced my challenge, "Excuse me, my name is Leo and I'm here for a gym battle against the gym leader!" At that a red haired women, who I knew was Flannery rushed to meet me. "I'm Flannery, gym leader of Lavaridge Town and I'll crush you in battle!" I wasn't expecting such a forthcoming gym leader but I smiled in anticipation for a good challenging battle. At that we arrived at the battlefield and the referee announced the rules. "This will be a gym battle between Flannery the gym leader and Leo the challenger. This battle will be three on three and will be over when one sides Pokemon are unable to battle. Incidentally, the challenger may only substitute their Pokemon. Trainer please send out your Pokemon!"

At that Flannery chose her first Pokemon. "Meg I choose you!" Meg her Slugma appeared glaring me down. "I need your help, Camerupt!" Camerupt appeared rearing on his hind legs displaying his strength to the smaller Slugma. "Battle begin!" At that I began "Camerupt use Bulldoze!" Camerupt slammed his feet into the ground sending powerful shockwaves to Slugma. "Meg Flamethrower!" Slugma attacked used Flamethrower, but before the attack could reach Camerupt. the Bulldoze had managed to defeat Slugma. "Slugma is unable to battle, Camerupt is the winner!"

"Good work Camerupt!" Camerupt turned to face me happily nodding before returning to see who his next opponent would be. "Thank you Meg, you deserve a break." As Flannery returned her Pokemon she grabbed her next choice. "Your up next Mag!" This time the evolved form of Slugma appeared, a Magcargo but I was sure Camerupt could take out Magcargo since it had an increased weakness to Ground Type moves. "Mag use Yawn!" Magcargo yawned and made Camerupt drowsy meaning I needed to finish the battle as quick as possible.

"Camerupt one more Bulldoze at full power!" Even though Camerupt was drowsy he managed to use Bulldoze which once again defeated Magcargo. After that Camerupt had fallen asleep. "Magcargo is unable to battle, Camerupt is the winner!" At that Flannery returned her Magcargo before readying her final Pokemon. "Your really strong, I underestimated you. Here comes Torkoal!" Torkoal looked stronger than I had first assumed. "Return Camerupt!" Camerupt being asleep would have been no match for Torkoal. "I need your help Marshtomp!" Marshtomp appeared and stared down Torkoal.

"Torkoal Overheat!" Flannery immediately began with a powerful Fire Type move that would become weaker each time the attack was used. "Marshtomp counter that with Muddy Water!" Muddy Water was like a tidal wave of mud that overpowered Overheat and smashed right into Torkoal. When the wave dissipated the result was clear as day. "Torkoal is unable to battle, Marshtomp is the winner. That means that the winner of this gym battle is Leo from Viridian City." As I was about to embrace Marshtomp and congratulate him on a stunning victory he began glowing, signalling he was evolving.

"Swampert has been registered to your Pokedex. Swampert the Mud Fish Pokemon a Water and Ground Type. It can swim while towing a large ship. It bashes down foes with a swing of its thick arms." Swampert immediately dashed towards and lifted me upwards spinning me around happy at evolving and happy he had managed to defeat Flannery too. Speaking of Flannery she returned her Torkoal and thanked it for battling the best it could. Swampert eventually released me and we both walked to Flannery who smiled. "Congratulations on your stunning victory. Your Pokemon were so powerful there was nothing I could do. Anyways, as proof you defeated me, here is your reward the Heat Badge." Flannery handed me the Heat Badge and I placed it in my badge case happy to have four badges from Hoenn now.

"I should warn you, your next gym battle will be far more difficult, Norman of Petalburg is one of the toughest gym leaders I've ever battled." Flannery warned me before she then mentioned once more. "Oh, also, this is a bit random. But here as a bonus for defeating me, I'd like you to have these." At that she handed me a pair of goggles. "There called Go-Goggles and you can use them to explore the desert on Route 111."

I thanked Flannery and decided that's what I would do before I challenged Norman the gym leader of Petalburg especially if he is immensely powerful. I headed on over to the Pokemon centre and had my Pokemon healed before calling Pelipper out. "Pelipper can you fly me to Route 111 above Mauville please." Pelipper happily agreed and I climbed aboard and watched as we left Lavaridge and soon arrived at Route 111. I thanked Pelipper and returned him to his Pokeball before entering the desert. I quickly grabbed the Go-Goggles Flannery had given me and could now properly explore the desert.

Upon looking around I could feel the strong sensation of the sandstorm against my skin and was glad I was wearing these goggles otherwise my eyes would be filled with sand. I began searching for some new Pokemon and came across a surprising Pokemon that lived in this perpetual sandstorm and that was Cacnea. "Come out Combusken!" Combusken appeared but was immediately attacked by the sandstorm. Combusken managed to ignore the sand and waited for his commands. "Combusken use Flame Charge!" Combusken dashed towards Cacnea surrounded in flames before scoring a powerful hit against Cacnea. As a result of Combusken's victory he began glowing and as he evolved I noticed his figure becoming much taller than myself. When the glow faded Blaziken appeared.

"Blaziken has been registered to your Pokedex. Blaziken the Blaze Pokemon a Fire and Fighting Type. Flames sprout from its wrists, enveloping its knuckles. Its punches scorch its foes." I was immensely happy and immediately hugged Blaziken before looking up at the surprisingly smug Blaziken. Then I threw a Pokeball at the weakened Cacnea and watched as the ball shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Cacnea has been registered to your Pokedex. Cacnea the Cactus Pokemon a Grass Type. By storing water in its body, this desert dweller can survive for 30 days without water." I healed up Cacnea and began searching for the remaining Pokemon.

The next Pokemon I found was a Baltoy which floated around low to the ground, signalling it was a part Psychic Type. "Cacnea come on out!" Cacnea appeared and looked towards his new trainer curious as to how they would work together. Baltoy decided to strike first using Extrasensory however, I used that as an opportunity. "Cacnea now use Sucker Punch!" Cacnea dashed forward surprisingly quick for a Pokemon of his size and struck Baltoy with a super effective Sucker Punch. Baltoy then collapsed down weakened by the powerful hit. "Good work Cacnea!" Cacnea cheered and I threw a Pokeball at the weakened Baltoy watching as the ball shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed.

"Baltoy has been registered to your Pokedex. Baltoy the Clay Doll Pokemon a Ground and Psychic Type. It moves by spinning on its foot. It is a rare Pokemon that was discovered in ancient ruins." I hadn't been aware that Baltoy was a rare Pokemon, but then again, when looking through the desert as best as I could. I hadn't actually seen any Baltoy before now. I had also been searching for what seemed like a while too. My musings were interrupted when Cacnea stopped cheering and I turned to face him curious as to why he had stopped cheering. I was surprised when he began glowing signalling he was evolving already. I could only assume he was a high levelled Cacnea and would have evolved soon on his own had I not caught him.

"Cacturne has been registered to your Pokedex. Cacturne the Scarecrow Pokemon a Grass and Dark Type. It becomes active at night, seeking prey that is exhausted from the day's desert heat." Cacturne decided that while in the desert he would help guide his trainer as thanks for helping him evolve. "Cacturne you don't have to help me navigate. You should take a break from this sandstorm." I tried to persuade him but Cacturne refused and held my arm as we walked through the Sandstorm. I guess it helped having a Pokemon who was familiar with the environment guide me. I thanked Cacturne and he smiled shaking his head that this wasn't even a problem for him.

Cacturne continued exploring the desert when he stopped and pointed me in the direction of the final Pokemon I needed to catch for the Pokedex. It was a Trapinch a Pokemon that was fully evolved became a beautiful mystic Flygon. "Cacturne could you battle for me?" Cacturne turned to face me before agreeing and dashing into battle against Trapinch. Trapinch immediately attacked using Sand Tomb which seemed to immobilise Cacturne but Cacturne smiled at me before walking straight through the Sand Tomb.

Trapinch wasn't expecting Cacturne to simply walk through his attack and instead decided to go all out and use Bite. "Use Sucker Punch!" Before Trapinch could even land a Bite, Cacturne had disappeared before striking Trapinch with a powerful Sucker Punch. Trapinch collapsed and I threw a Pokeball at the weakened Trapinch watching the ball shake, once, twice three times before the capture was confirmed. "Trapinch has been registered to your Pokedex. Trapinch the Ant Pit Pokemon a Ground Type. It makes a conical pit in desert sand and lies in wait at the bottom for prey to come tumbling down." I healed up Trapinch and thanked Cacturne and a quick check on my Rotom Phone informed me that was all the wild Pokemon captured here.

At that Cacturne and I decided to explore the remainder of the desert and see if there were any other challengers here and there were some trainers to battle. The first trainer was a Camper who sent out a Sandslash and I sent out my newly evolved Swampert. Swampert defeated Sandslash with a single Muddy Water. The next opponent was a Black Belt who sent out a Machoke and I sent out my new Baltoy and had him use Extrasensory which defeated Machoke. Turns out Baltoy was quite the powerhouse already. The next opponent was a Ruin Maniac who sent out a Baltoy and I had Cacturne start battling, defeating Baltoy with a well placed Sucker Punch. The next Pokemon sent out was a Sandslash and I substituted for my Grovyle. Grovyle wasn't used to battling in a sandstorm but managed to defeat Sandslash with a well placed, super effective Leaf Blade.

As a result of his stunning victory, Grovyle began evolving and joined my now fully evolved starter Pokemon of Hoenn and once again, much like Blaziken, Sceptile was now far taller than me and he still acted in aloof manner. "Sceptile has been registered to your Pokedex. Sceptile the Forest Pokemon a Grass Type. The leaves that grow on its arms can slice down thick trees. It is without peer in jungle combat." I congratulated Sceptile and hugged him not surprised nor bothered when he didn't respond. I knew Sceptile would come around, he was a very stern and aloof guy. But when alone, he was a completely different guy around me.

My next opponent was a Picnicker who challenged me with a Cacnea and I had my newly evolved Blaziken use his newly learned Blaze Kick to stylishly defeat Cacnea. The next trainer was a Camper who sent out a Graveler and I sent out my newly evolved Sceptile who overwhelmed Graveler with Leaf Blade. The final trainer was another Picnicker who challenged me with a Sandslash and I sent out my Nuzleaf having him use Razor Leaf defeating Sandslash. After that, Cacturne had begun to lead me out of the desert when his eagle eyes spotted something he hadn't seen before.

I was startled when Cacturne suddenly stopped and began pulling me in a different direction, perhaps he had seen something and wanted to investigate. Soon enough I could see what he had spotted, two objects that looked like rocks were slightly submerged in the sand. I pulled out my Rotom Phone who identified the rocks as fossils. One was the Claw Fossil and the other was a Root Fossil. I was happy that Cacturne had found these fossils and immediately thanked him profusely. Thanks to the sandstorm though, I couldn't see Cacturne lightly blushing at how adorable his trainer acted when he was excited.

My excitement ended when I realised the position of the fossils meant that when I grabbed one, the other would likely submerge deeper into the sand. "Trapinch come on out!" Trapinch appeared and glanced up at me. "Trapinch when I grab this fossil, could you get the other one for me? I think the fossil will sink down when I remove this one." Trapinch nodded and dug underground and appeared next to the fossil. I grabbed the Root Fossil and as predicted the Claw Fossil began sinking. However. Trapinch showed fierce strength and gently grabbed the fossil before retching it out of the sand and depositing it in my hand for me. "Thank you very much Trapinch and you as well Cacturne." Both Pokemon smiled happy to have helped their beloved trainer.

At that I had done everything I wanted in Route 111 the desert and decided next I would get these fossils restored and to do that I needed to return for Rustboro City. Cacturne helped me get out of the desert and once more I thanked him before returning him to his Pokeball so he could rest up. "Gardevoir come on out!" Gardevoir appeared elegantly, "Gardevoir could you teleport me to Rustboro City please?" Gardevoir nodded smiling as he gestured for me to hold his hand. I took his hand and watched as Gardevoir closed his eyes concentrating before we disappeared and suddenly reappeared right in Rustboro City. "Thank you Gardevoir, return for now." Gardevoir smiled before being recalled.

At that, I now headed towards the Devon Corporation and entered the large building. I headed to the receptionist and mentioned about restoring my fossils and the receptionist immediately directed me up the stairs where a fossil expert would be able to restore my fossils. I followed her instructions and headed up the flight of stairs before being confronted by an eager scientist. "Welcome, you must be the trainer whose acquired both a Root Fossil and a Claw Fossil. How incredibly exciting and fascinating too. Ah yes, sorry, when I see fossils I lose myself in my own excitement. Please follow me to the fossil restoration machine."

At that we arrived at the complicated looking machine and the scientist took my fossils before placing them inside as they began the restoration process. "Incidentally, is this the first time you've had fossils restored?" The scientist asked me curious and I shook my head. "No while I was in Kanto, I came across a Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil and a Old Amber all of which were revived." The scientist shrieked in excitement, "wow, that is exhilarating, gets my heart pumping to hear about fossils." We continued discussing about how the fossil Pokemon may react when they had been restored and while that was happening I had brought my three Fossil Pokemon, Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl to help these fossils understand the era they were in.

Eventually the scientist returned and mentioned that the fossils had been restored and I was introduced to the unique Pokemon. On the left was a Lileep and the right was a Anorith. The two Hoenn Fossil Pokemon looked at me with what seemed like bewilderment, confusion and perhaps some uncertainty. These emotions were natural for Pokemon that had long since been asleep for millennia. "It's nice to meet you both, my name is Leo and I'm a human." The two fossils stared at me listening carefully understanding what I was saying.

"I'd like you to meet some faces that may be familiar too you. Please understand that they're all friendly and will not hurt you." At that the fossils watched me as I grabbed my three Pokemon. "Come out Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl!" The three fossils appeared and stared down at me before they even acknowledged the new fossil Pokemon. Before I could even introduce them, Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl grabbed me in a group hug that had me laughing as they nuzzled me. I petted them happily and they eventually released me and I introduced them to the new Pokemon. "Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl. These are Lileep and Anorith and they have been restored from fossils in the Hoenn Region. I wanted you to meet them first."

At that Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl happily greeted the Hoenn Fossil Pokemon who seemed slightly nervous but eventually warmed up to the apparently familiar faces. I assumed that in the past Lileep and Anorith must have lived with Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl. The five Pokemon spoke happily with one another before the Hoenn Fossils decided they wanted to accompany me on my journey and become as strong as the Kanto fossils they saw before them. "Pokeballs go!" I watched as they tapped Lileep and Anorith and began shaking once, twice, three times before the captures were confirmed.

"Lileep has been registered to your Pokedex. Lileep the Sea Lily Pokemon a Rock and Grass Type. It lived on the seafloor 100 million years ago and was reanimated scientifically." Lileep also knew the moves Ancient Power, Brine, Mega Drain and Amnesia. So he was already quite capable of battling when he got used to this era. "Anorith has been registered to your Pokedex. Anorith the Old Shrimp Pokemon a Bug and Rock Type. This Pokemon ancestor was reanimated from a fossil. It lived in the sea and hunted with its claws." Anorith knew the moves, Ancient Power, Bug Bite, Brine and Slash.

Hearing the Pokedex entries for these fossil Pokemon interested me and confused me greatly. These Pokemon weren't Water Types, but in their past lives must have been Water Types. Both of them lived on the seafloor millions of years ago and even now they know the move Brine which was a Water move. I assumed that they lost the Water Typing once they had been reanimated though I wasn't sure how it worked. After that was done I thanked the scientists and further thanked Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl and they went back to Kanto. Meanwhile, I was looking forward to raising these Fossil Pokemon and seeing how powerful they would become.

As I left the Devon Corporation, my bag began shaking rapidly, as my egg that I had received in Lavaridge was already beginning to hatch. I rushed to the Pokemon Centre and had Nurse Joy oversee the egg hatching. When the egg hatched I was happy to have received a Wynaut. "Wynaut has been registered to your Pokedex. Wynaut the Bright Pokemon a Psychic Type. They grow strong by pushing up against one another en masse. They love eating sweet fruit." I eagerly anticipated working with Wynaut too knowing that he could evolve into Wobbuffet.

At that I decided I would now begin making my way to Petalburg and also train my newest Pokemon too.
