The soft sound of rustling fabric filled the air, drawn forth by sweaters brushing passed one another. A diminutive otter searched through the rack, muttering to himself while he slid them by. Most of the garments were made for far larger species, leaving him to forage high and low for tops of a more fitting size. River was not so easily discouraged, though the furrow in his brow deepened by the second. Relief crossed his face when he finally found the section meant for his size, but that relaxation proved short lived. It only took a few swipes of the rack for his problem to swing the other direction, presenting him with a spread that was hopelessly small.

River narrowed his hunt once more, and by the time he surveyed all of his options, only three garments met his criteria. The first two were old and worn, marked with stains acquired over a long, loving journey with their original owners. The otter briefly wondered what strange flavors of mud they must have rolled in to produce those patterns. After an easy elimination, his attention drifted to the third. While it wasn't fresh from the factory, compared to its brothers, it was pristine. Its rich burgundy wool retained the depth of its hue almost everywhere, and the flexible fabric at its wrists and waist held its stretch. The color complimented River's chocolate pelt, and its lack of a pattern ensured it could go with anything. Delighted with his find, the otter plucked it from the rack.

As he reached upward, an intriguing sign caught his attention.

CAUTION, GARMENTS MAY BE ENCHANTED. PLEASE ASK FOR ASSISTANCE OR TRY ON AT YOUR OWN RISK.

River chuckled and scoffed. The idea of magical clothing was laughable, the notion they would appear in a simple shop even more so. With a mirthful grin on his muzzle, the otter freed the sweater from his hanger and inspected it closer. Its tag bared a strange symbol in place of a brand's logo, but other than that, it appeared ordinary. Satisfied with its quality, he tugged his own shirt over his head and donned the sweater there in the aisle. A small part of him expected a jolt, some indication of magical power or curse, but the only tingle that came was the gathering of static in his pelt. River laughed and chided himself, then continued his shopping.

The otter needed nothing else, but instead took the chance to feel how the garment fit in motion. He felt the sting of chaffing garments many times before, and he intended to ensure this would not be one of those cases. Fortunately aside from a little bagginess the sweater fit rather well. It hugged his waist and wrists with a plush warmth, staving off the chill of the store's air conditioning. Satisfaction swelled in his chest when he pulled his hands into his sleeves, the comfy top offering just enough room to do so. That tiny mote of extra warmth tipped his balance toward uncomfortable however, spurring him to free his paws while he browsed the shop's other wares.

River perused the other racks and shelves of clothing, a selection that proved disappointingly limited. As with his first search, most of the clothing available wasn't designed to fit his figure. Still, he idly browsed for the possibility of finding something for a friend. Or perhaps if he proved lucky enough, a garment infused with magical potential. The otter chuckled to himself once more, but stifled his soft laugh when it drew the attention of another customer. He offered an apologetic look to the portly vulpine, who gave an apathetic shrug in response. That was the end of their interaction, until River decided to check another shelf. He stepped to the side and started to leave the section, until the fox hip checked him.

The shorter otter stumbled and reclaimed his balance, then glared at the fox. Instead of the apologetic look he expected, the vulpine bore one of confusion and irritation.

"That was rude," River accused.

"It was," the fox answered. "Aren't you going to say sorry?"

The otter raised his brow. "What?"

"What do you mean 'what'? You bumped into me. You're supposed to apologize after that happens."

"No, you bumped into me," River clarified.

The fox rolled his eyes. "I absolutely did not," he countered. Before the encounter escalated further, however, the vulpine shook his head. "Look, its not a big deal honestly, but you should be more careful with that ass of yours. I wouldn't want to knock over anything expensive."

Confusion crossed the otter's face, and he craned his head back to peer over his shoulder. His tail had considerably thickened at some point, straining the opening of his shorts. The flexible fabric stretched tight around its root, its strained folds buried in the cleft of his fattened ass. River's hips stretched his waistband to its limits, and his plush cheeks pulled the garment to near transparency. Only his boxers preserved his decency. The otter furrowed his brow in confusion, then turned to face the fox and address that accusation.

"You've got some wild standards if you think my ass is that big. It's been practically concave my whole life."

The fox stammered in the presence of such denial.

"If you're done making things up, I'd like to get back to shopping."

River turned on his heel and ended the conversation, sending a thick thump through the shelf in the process. Its contents bounced and jostled against each other, nearly spurring the fox to steady things, but luckily nothing fell to the ground. The vulpine shot River another glare as he waddled off, though that parting gesture went unheeded. Instead, the otter hummed to himself and wandered deeper into the shop, hoping to put some distance between himself and the disgruntled customer. The otter's idle steps carried him to a new section of wares, one filled with antiques and trinkets beyond his interest and knowledge. Still, the strange pieces appealed to his eye, drawing him into the narrow space between cabinets.

The soft shuffle of fur against wood accompanied his every step, a testament to the broadness of his hips. River remained none the wiser however, easily clearing the space in his perception. He didn't notice the lumber in his step, nor the crescent of belly that peeked from beneath his sweater, blind to the weight accumulating on his figure. The growing apron his gut and the flab swaddling his thighs wobbled a little more each time he stopped, the resulting ripples taking longer and longer to slow. Even the floorboards that creaked underfoot went unrecognized, swept aside as a simple distraction. The only clue that even faintly registered was the rising warmth in his core, brought on by his generous layer of insulation. The only thing that heat accomplished was spurring him to roll up the sweater's sleeves.

River's browsing continued and his unwitting gaining continued. He kept a slow, steady pace between the aisles, one relaxed enough to sample the ancient eye candy. The otter maintained a momentum that kept him from stopping entirely, however, until the illusion struggled to keep its form. The weight of River's tail dragged in his wake and hindered his gait, while the ever-growing span of his hips pushed the limits of his passage. The apron of his belly strove beyond the reach of his sweater, bouncing against his thighs with every step. The otter's breath grew hot and heavy under the effort of moving so much mass, and that labored heaving drew the attention of his peers. River had no idea why the other customers watched him with concern, and their gazes proved harder to ignore as they accumulated. Finished with his shopping, he decided it best to check out and leave the strange atmosphere behind.

The otter's step dwindled to a ponderous waddle by the time he reached the counter. River's short stature brought its surface a few inches beneath his eye, and his width ensured no one else could approach. He labored to catch his breath for a moment before the clerk arrived, who nearly overlooked his presence. The kitsune's gaze turned down, and for a brief instant, confusion crossed her brow. It cleared at the sight of his sweater however, and a knowing smirk followed. Endra stole a moment to glance across her domain and confirm her sign was still there. Its red letters of caution proved unmistakable, and she banished any need to mend River's mistake with a slight shrug.

"Did you find everything you were looking for," the kitsune offered.

"Even better. I found something I wasn't looking for."

"Oh?"

"I came in looking for a sweater, and I found the perfect fit for me." River pinched the chest of the garment and pulled it away, hoping to demonstrate the soft slack with which it hugged his figure. Instead, he only showed how far it stretched to contain him. Threads threatened to pop with that simple motion alone, but the garment held.

Endra just grinned and nodded. "Well, I'm happy to hear that. I hope you'll keep us in mind next time you're in need of something." The kitsune gestured for River to lean forward. The doughy expanse of his stomach impeded the motion, but Endra managed to scan the sweater's tag without too much effort.

The shopkeeper accepted River's cash and the pair shared a wave as he lumbered for the exit. The otter cast quite the pear-shaped shadow on his exit, and kitsune pondered how long it would take him to notice.
