RSH-Stand Chapter 2

Colonel Revedov warmed his hands over the small fire as he watched the GRU men collecting their equipment, preparing to go out on what was to be the preliminary reconnaissance mission to the coming attack on the American base. The Colonel wasn't short of disdain for the shady operatives, for ever since the GRU and Colonel Nymev arrived, Colonel Revedov and his Spetsnaz had nothing to do besides vegetate and protect the supply trucks as they unloaded.

How dare they task an Army Spetsnaz unit with this duty. Revedov thought to himself, thankful he'd gotten them permission for another mission. After all, if all of Revedov's Spetsnaz comrades were having a good time, why couldn't he?

What a lousy job for a special operations team....

Revedov fished into his pocket and looked at the photo he had found amidst the base ruins. He glanced at it again, using the flickering of the firelight to accentuate the rich colors. Part of him wondered about these two American soldiers, what they were like when they weren't fighting. He knew that the creatures he was looking for had intelligence as good or better than his own, and his wild imagination began to spark. What would it be like to talk to her? The colonel envied Jay Redfield, for he was having the chance to interact with something, no, someone that the world had never seen before. Another part of Revedov's brain itched as a new thought came to mind with a sudden, harsh push. What would it be like to kill her? Just another life snuffed out in this campaign? No, something much more important.....

"Jay and Meryl, what are you like?" He said to no one, watching the tiger-clad GRU operatives move out into the darkness. Soon, they would be within view of the ASC, and they would be one step closer to the pair than he was. Revedov wasn't worried, because these two were his targets alone. Whatever the end came out of this campaign, he would be victorious, or he would die trying to obtain his goal.

The colonel stood from the fire and walked to his tent, brushing aside the OD flap and setting his AKM down on one of the 73mm ammunition boxes that served as furniture. Revedov sat down at his desk and examined the destroyed computer that had shielded the now-familiar picture in his breast pocket.

"I wonder if....." Revedov muttered as a thought crossed over his mind. Acting on this new found idea, he pried open the bottom of the machine and looked at the internals, now somewhat discombobulated from the explosion. The damage to the laptop looked like a total loss. The motherboard was half-melted, the power supply was fried, the video card was in pieces, but, by some miracle or coincidence, the hard drive was intact. Revedov disconnected it from the frayed wires and pulled it out, scratch free.

"Americans and their indestructible hardware." He laughed, dropping it into his rucksack a moment later. Katov's intelligence directorate would have a field day with that, for sure.

Another picture came from Revedov's pocket as he reclosed his ruck. This photo was one of a very different but oddly similar nature. The picture showed a petite, small-breasted woman with long, blonde hair and deep green eyes. On the woman's shoulder was a girl that was a striking image of her mother. Revedov's family, and, unknowingly his only reason to survive. The colonel closed his eyes and gave a long, deep sigh. How he longed to see them again. In a slow, deliberate motion, he kissed the photo and replaced it in his pocket. It was almost time for the plan to begin....

As he replaced the picture, Revedov heard the putting of a UAZ-469 pulling up outside of his tent. The colonel picked up his AKM and rucksack and slung the items over his shoulder. As he stepped outside, Revedov watched as a Ural transport truck pulled behind the UAZ. His men stared back at him as he opened the small 4x4's door.

Colonel Revedov nodded, giving his men a gesture of a closed fist. The Spetsnaz, acknowledging the gesture, knew that it was also soon to be game time.

As the two vehicles started out through the dusk, they passed by fifty tanks and nearly a company of soldiers as they camped. Revedov could see the men gathering their equipment in the flickering light of the campfires. They were gearing up for an attack.....

Sergeant Redfield sat idly with his feet on the window ledge, staring at the full moon that hung over the complex like a white sun, casting odd shadows that were eerie enough to make you look twice. The boom of artillery from farther down the border kept him constantly on his toes, because at any moment, it could be right on top of him. From the tactical readout in the operations center, the Russian forces under General Katov had circled around him, fanning out like a spider across western Germany. It made Jay uneasy that they had only stopped here. It's like they knew.

The room that they had been put up in had an oddly Communist look and feel to it, and for good reason. Little to Jay's surprise, when he first saw the center and asked about the origin, he discovered that it had formerly belonged to the Nationale Volksarmee, and had sat abandoned since the end of the cold war. The office had a mat similar to the wrestling style spread out on the floor. That too was antique, sporting wear lines and an odd off-red finish. The old mat served as a sleeping surface for Meryl, more comfortable than the hard linoleum floor.

A cool summer breeze wafted in, and after caressing Jay, moved down to dance over Meryl's resting form. It moved to entwine her in its grasp, holding her tightly. A shiver rose from her, and Jay used it as an excuse to turn to admire her powerful sleekness once more.

Without her armor, he could see the true beauty of her chestnut hide. From the long black tiger stripes that ran from the top of her head to the base of her tail, to the light almond color of her soft belly hide. The entire ensemble was beautiful.

Redfield got up from where he was sitting and walked to her sleeping body, sitting down on the floor next to her. Jay also couldn't help but notice the red contact marks from where her armor rubbed her skin as she moved. He placed his fingers on them gently, feeling the roughness and callous firsthand. He would have to come up with a remedy to that. The thought was filed into the back of his mind for access at a later date.

Jay sat against her chest in a reclined position and once again took up looking out the window. Jay saw the moon take up the portal in its entirety, and stared over the craterous expanse in wonder. What did the earth look like from up there?

Redfield found his mind wandering to the events of the previous few days. First, the sniper incursion into Poland, in which his female had almost been killed. He recalled the flight from the Spetsnaz through the wood. The thought made him shudder as he recalled the bullets zinging and flitting through the trees above their heads.

He shook off this latest recollection and looked to his left at Meryl's head, riding the slow rise and fall of her chest and listening to the regularity of her breathing. How lucky he was to get this alluring creature as his partner. It was like a little boy's fantasy come true, and he was living it firsthand!

Redfield relaxed as he leaned back onto Meryl, placing more weight on her. The female's breathing was amazing.........

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Jay bent down and Caressed Meryl's snout in his hands, staring into her amber eyes as she lovingly nuzzled his face. He explored her body with his willing hands, moving lower without much hesitation. She cooed softly and gave him a shuddered nod as Redfield found the objective of his pursuit a few seconds after he reached the base of her tail. He felt over the area of interest and watched Meryl's reaction as he prodded. He brought her muzzle down to his face and delivered soft kisses on her lips, inhaling her exhaled breath and breathing lightly onto her nostrils. She buried her nose in his chest and inhaled deeply, taking in his scent.

Redfield looked away as she did this, out onto the expanse of the border to the east. Jay could see the stout, rusted humps of the Russian armored vehicles that were part of the ill-fated armored attack on the border. Several of the wrecked tanks were growing a layer of moss and vines, and the zone was not absent of flowers. As he recalled the first terrifying few seconds of the battle and the artillery that had saved them all. Jay watched the scene over with vivid clarity. Images of burning soldiers and ruined lives flashed in and out, being slowly pushed away by the exquisiteness of the female below him. Redfield smiled as he shoved back the memories, once all too haunting and clear, back into the depths of his mind. Not far over from the memories of times past, Jay could see the War Memorial, depicting a German soldier, frozen in bronze, running to somewhere unknown with his rifle in hand.

Jay returned his attention to her sex, sliding a finger in to conduct some not to routine reconnaissance. Redfield felt his way around, feeling Meryl's inner depths and forcing her hot, pheromone filled essence up into his brain. He played with her muscles through the off-pink skin that surrounded them, laughing at her reactions as he tortured. With pokes here and there, he could get a twitch or even a squeeze, taunting Meryl with his hands. After an angry look mixed with eye-closing pleasure, Jay worked on undoing his trousers, and watched as Meryl eyed his manhood in interest.

She turned from him, eyes closed and snout pointed towards the ground as Jay gave her an unexpected rub on her now-familiar G-spot. Redfield gave out a low laugh as she eyed him playfully a second time and positioned himself to enter. Jay spread Meryl's legs for her and pushed onwards, feeling himself slide into Meryl's moistness. He could feel the high body temperature from the walls of her pussy, and the hot, moist fluids that caressed his length as they did his fingers not a moment before.

Jay had long since known that Meryl was decently tight, with a half a ton of muscle on top of her sex, Redfield thought it for good reason. Her muscles contracted and tightened on him as he began to thrust into her. Not too fast of course, but teasing his Raptoress with slow, deliberate movement. She gave him a look that went something like "If you don't go faster I'm going to eat you."

Meryl gasped as she felt Jay actually mate with her. She couldn't describe the sense of fullness that came with the flood emotions that came forth from the act, and the sense of accomplishment she got from actually bedding Jay. After all, it was a long time coming that she had desired his company. It had started as an innocent dirty thought, a spying, secretive gaze from her younger days, and now, moving forward to the main event!

As she rumbled with pleasure, the satisfaction of having the illustrious Sergeant Jay Redfield, soldier and Guardian, mate with her was overwhelming! Over all people, he chose her! Meryl closed her eyes as Jay thrusted into her, feeling the tender caress of his cock as it rubbed against all of her beloved pleasure points. She could feel the ridge of his head massaging her, clouding her mind and bringing her closer and closer to her quick climax. She moved her rump into a more comfortable position where she lay, and found her usually strong and responsive muscles weakened. But know she felt it coming....

As Redfield lead her to her peak, Meryl arched her neck and threw her head backwards. The female let out a gasp as stars exploded in her eyes, leaving her with pleasant aftershocks as Jay met his own orgasm and released his life-giving seed into her. Meryl could feel it rising within her as Jay pulled out, glistening with her wetness. Redfield collapsed next to her, breathing heavily and producing a wide grin as he gazed into her glazed-over eyes.

Here, in his arms, was where she felt most content with herself. Meryl felt that she could do anything while in his loving embrace. She was also content to stay there for the rest of her life, no matter the effort that it took to remain. No matter the pain, either. It was with those thoughts, she drifted off to sleep.

As Jay looked around, he began to notice other things. Far in the distance, but seemingly up close and clear, his eyes made out a larger, but seemingly less well-known monument. A small, barely worn path led up to the site, which was located amidst the ruins of a mass of concrete buildings, a large bronze memorial was set on a marble base. The display consisted of two Utahraptors standing amidst three soldiers, one of which was himself. One of the Utahraptors looked oddly similar to Meryl, except it had a triple-slash scar across the neck. The other figures Jay could not make out. He flinched as light rain began to fall from the graying sky. He squinted as he eyed the monument further...

Redfield noticed that there was lettering on the marble base, and he focused in on it. Dark clouds began to cover the sun as he turned back to his mate, mind pondering what he had just seen. Meryl wad still sound asleep, breathing heavily. As the soldier started to make out the inscription, his heart began to pound as if it had just received a jolt of electricity. What he read scared him....

"Meryl and Jay Redfield, 'For those who give their lives so that others may live.'"

Jay stood in terror as a heavy downpour began to fall, soaking them both where they lay. Meryl didn't wake up through it all.

The Sergeant noticed movement at the base of the monument. Creatures, dozens of them, crawling all over it like centipedes and gyrating towards them on all fours. He could make out the distinct shape of torn gas masks covering their eyes, and the loping strides in which they took. As the darkness blotted out the sun, he saw disfigurements covering the creatures and showing evidently through their torn black uniforms. Triple-slash wounds that could only be the work of a Utahraptor adorned them. Mute, red eyes contrasted against the darkening panorama, causing Jay to open his mouth in an attempt to shout in fear. No words could be heard however, only muffled gasps from a parched throat.

Redfield's only duty in his mind at the moment was to protect Meryl. Jay's hands fell down to his holster, sliding the quick release to the side and grasping the cold metal grip in a single motion. He drew the weapon and brought it up to the firing position, clicking the safety off with his thumb. Jay aligned the sights on the silhouette of the nearest creature, squeezing the trigger and watching as the 146 grain jacketed hollow point planted right in the creature's chest, spraying phosphorescent blood into the dark, lighting up the once-human figure in an eerie glow. He shifted the sights to the next loping figure, sending a round through the lens of the gas mask. Jay could now hear the evil shrieks and grunts that accompanied the monsters, and he sank low next to Meryl in fear.

All he saw was the flash of maroon berets and white striped shirts through the wet blades of the sights as the creatures grew closer. The pale skull faces seen through the viewers of the masks crouched behind the muzzles of AK-74Ms stared right back at him as they drew up to the pair. Jay saw the same Russian soldier from the school running towards him, AKM down but at the ready, with the monsters chasing behind. As soon as he appeared, he was gone...

Jay looked down with horror as something consumed Meryl right in front of him. First, it started with a glowing line across her neck, but it slowly expanded into a triple slash across her snout. A bruise over her right eye became evident, and several bullet entry wounds crept up her chest. The same phosphorescent blood materialized on her claws, bringing grim clarity to the rest of her body. As Redfield looked up, he was no longer in the woods, but in a field. On the far north side, he could just make out the shapes of the concrete ASC structure, gutted by flames. On the access road, Jay could see divisions of the same black-clad creatures loping towards the west, and whose cadence sounded like one big long groan. Redfield could make out the charcoal-charred, contorted bodies of American soldiers all around him.

As Jay frightfully looked at Meryl, he watched as a dozen of the blacksuits approached with eyes aflame. He placed the pistol to her skull and pulled the trigger, intent on ending it all before they had the chance to get to her. The pistol clicked and fell on an empty chamber.

The creatures seized upon her at once as Jay was thrown clear. He watched helplessly as they stood, ripping off their masks to reveal bleached white skulls. They began to feast, ripping off pieces of her body to curb their hunger for flesh. Meryl wailed in terror and pain as her blood ran free. But as she looked at him with those deep, crying yellow eyes, they too became ones of red flame.

Jay was fixed to them, almost hypnotized. He tried to move to act, but his muscles were unresponsive.

Out of the corner of his eye, Jay noticed a figure coming towards them through the dust of the marching column of monsters. A man riding atop a mutilated black horse that seemed to reek of evil and decay gazed upon them with ice blue eyes, smiling at the destruction around him. The man's horse plodded through the bodies and blood to him, and Jay could now see him in every detail. The soldier's blonde hair was shaved short to his taut scalp, and a maroon beret was set squarely on it, hiding the top of his head from view. As Jay raised his pistol, the man smiled and tipped his beret forwards. As he did this, a pistol round struck Redfield in the neck. Jay hadn't noticed the Makarov in the man's other hand. He succumbed quickly. The scene was punctuated by the spasmed discharge of Redfield's .45......

++++++++++++++++

Jay Redfield jolted awake from the dream turned nightmare and shouted in fear, looking around frantically for any sign of danger. Nothing....only Meryl sleeping peacefully behind him. Jay stood up and closed the window, looking around to the lit concrete below first. He sauntered back over to Meryl's mat and lay down with her. Jay lifted her top arm and put his back against her belly, where he could hear the low, comforting rumblings. He shifted under her, making himself comfortable for the rest of the night. Little did HE know, but Meryl, awakened by his nervous movement and sharp shout, stared at his sleeping form with that same quirky smile of the eyes. In the chill of the antiquated office, Meryl wiggled just a little bit closer to her partner, seeking her own comfort....

+++++++++++++++++

"Sergeant Redfield, please come to the Commander's office immediately." The loudspeakers boomed throughout the ASC mess hall, causing Jay to look up with anger. He didn't like to be interrupted while eating, and today was no exception to that very stringent rule. Jay uttered a curse as he rose from the bench and took his tray to the conveyer belt. The young soldier searched back through his memory, remembering whether or not he had done anything to get in trouble over his brief tenure at the ASC. Maybe something he did when he was in the other adjacent compound. The ASC 1 section, as opposed to the newly commissioned ASC 2, which came into existence after he left.

"Well, now that the Russians are here, it looks like we are all in trouble." Jay said aloud, not being able to recall anything significant. He brushed a few food particles from the scrambled eggs and toast from his ACUs and walked from the cafeteria.

Jay passed through the lobby, moving to the hallway designated "Green Section" or simply "Green". After a quick scan with his temporary key card, he trampled on. Redfield passed the Gym, which had been taken over by the ASCDF for use as a drill floor. He sauntered by the armory and the sleeping quarters on his way to the stairs and the beginning of "Blue Section", command. Jay passed by a female soldier also clad in Army ACU uniform. He greeted her with a nod and noted as she nodded back. The exchange came and went within a matter of seconds, but not before Jay read 'Learn' on the woman's nametag.

Redfield tread lightly down the hallway leading to Commander Brand's office, anticipating what the short, husky, blonde man might have to tell him. Jay always hated command visits, because they always seemed to turn badly. He paused at the second floor observation windows to the gym, staring at the Black uniformed ASCDF (ASC Defense Forces) undergoing final inspection. The men down there were faced on the left by a row of sophisticated weaponry. Redfield noted the presence of G36 rifles, automatic shotguns, and MG3 light machine guns. Quite a fearsome arsenal.

After a short time observing, Jay continued down the white washed path.

Redfield walked into Commander Brand's office sharply, saluting the man with the stiffness of a concrete floor. Commander Brand returned the salute and sat down, offering Jay a cigar, which he took regardless of the fact that he didn't smoke. He could barter it for something, after all.

"Sorry for interrupting your breakfast Sergeant Redfield, but this couldn't wait. Earlier this morning, we picked up a flash broadcast on our command frequency from the NSO . The message, aside from some Marxist drivel, confirmed orders to a Russian artillery battery to commence an attack on this facility tomorrow morning. As you know, the United States and Germany were technically neutral towards the NSO, but as you also know, that neutrality was violated when they attacked the border." Note the 'were'.

"Yesterday evening, one of our SPYSATs picked up this image." The commander said, producing a manila folder over to Jay. Redfield pulled the x-ray like image out and held it up to the light, eyes widening at the sight present.

"Are those 2S19s?" Jay asked, noting the camouflaged emplacements present over his old post. Those artillery guns would mean bad news for the fixed ASC.

"You bet they are. Study them closer." The commander said, propping his feet up on the desk and leaning back in his big, black leather chair. The lit cigar now filled the room with a sweet odor, and Jay wouldn't have been surprised if all the tension in the room burst into flames and consumed them all. Then again, there was enough.....

Jay looked at the photos of the border, noting splotches surrounding them.

"What are these blobs here?" Jay asked, wishing he had paid more attention to aerial reconnaissance classes.

"Dirt. They're dug in and ready for a long stay. They are essentially holding us hostage. And that, Sergeant, is where you come in. The Russians haven't given us a deadline other than tomorrow morning, but it looks like they are serious. This facility is build on an old German bunker complex that serves as its foundation, and down there are old coal tunnels that lead into the woods near the border. We are going to hit them before the attack is scheduled to begin, and that should give us enough time to evacuate and destroy the complex. All of my Green Berets are busy hunting helicopters, so we need you to pick up the slack. Those Hinds are really ripping the transport guys to shreds."

"Do you think they are only going to use artillery? I am sure those helicopters aren't far behind." Jay calculated, still studying over the photographs and thinking about Brand's last comment. He was still fairly lost to this whole situation, after all, he had been eating breakfast peacefully only a few minutes before. Oh well, he figured, things moved fast in war.

"I know I don't need to tell you the trouble it could cause the entire world if the Russians got all of our equipment and files. We are planned to evacuate the ASC personnel and equipment out through the tunnel system. There is more than one, after all. I will leave the technical details up to you if the situation arises. I obtained the tunnel blueprints, for I am sure that you could use them tonight." The commander looked over his desk and scratched his right eyebrow, waiting for Jay's reaction.

"Tonight?"

"Yes, Tonight. I want you to exit through the tunnels and get as close to the Russian camp as you can. Pick another pair from the review formation this afternoon. Another Guardian, a German, will be joining you as well. I want you to wipe those Howitzers from the map, and buy us enough time to get out. Evacuation orders are about to be put in place. We will pull out in the middle of the night while the Russians are still licking their wounds. That will be all for now." Commander Brand finished, standing up and wishing Jay good luck a second time. Redfield returned the courtesy, not before noticing the cocked and locked Beretta sitting by his desk.

The soldier left the commander's office in worse a mood than he had entered with. Now, the only thing left to do was to go to Medical to see Meryl and go to the Arsenal to draw his assault rifle. Jay went back downstairs to the "Red Section" and into the medical wing, turning into the observation room. Meryl was lying on a mat that reminded Jay of her wrestling mat.

"Look who finally returned." Meryl said jokingly as the Medical Officer injected her with clear fluid from a blue bottle. Jay could see the tension in Meryl's eyes, but her voice betrayed nothing. She was armorless, allowing Jay to view with completeness the toned muscles of her form yet again.

"Yes, I came to watch them stick needles in you. Give her a few more of those while you are at it." Jay humored back as the medical technician laughed with the both of them Meryl slowly lowered her head and fell into a dreamy sleep as the effects of the solution began to take hold. Jay turned to the Medical Officer and read his nametag. Everson, it read.

"So, how is she?" Jay asked in a friendly tone, looking over Meryl's slumped form. She looked better today to him, and he noticed the familiar energetic spark when she talked had returned.

"She is making an excellent recovery indeed. She lost a decent amount of blood, but other than that everything appears normal." Everson said, bending down and peeling back Meryl's lips to observe her teeth. After scratching his fingernails along them to check for buildup, he inspected the back of her throat with a Mini Maglite.

"Well, the good news is she doesn't have Strep, but I do need to tell you that you will need to clean her teeth a little more often. The US government obviously wants their new multi-million dollar weapons to have exacting dental hygiene standards. As a matter of fact, you can expect the Supply Sergeant to order a kit for you." He said with a laugh, getting up and moving away from her head. Meryl began to stir from the effect of the drugs, slowly coming to.

"Yeah right, I wouldn't get that kit until the end of the war anyway. Besides, I've still got mine."

"Isn't that the truth." The doc responded, no doubt frustrated with the supply situation as well.

"Thank you for everything you have done for her." Jay said, knowing that this man had stayed up longer than necessesary to ensure that Meryl was a 'Go' for further combat.

"No problem. Take care of her, she's a special one. Every other Raptor I've worked with hasn't been so much of a free spirit." Everson said as he scribbled down a few notes on his clipboard. Jay noticed the heading on the manila folder read 'SPC 3303789 Meryl' out of the corner of his eye.

"Tell me about it. It's hard enough work trying to keep up with her!" Jay humored, standing in a way that required no special attention.

"Oh yes, I thought you might like to know, Meryl weighs exactly 1054 pounds. She is exceptionally healthy in blood work and fitness as well." Everson added after Jay's comment, digging through her charts even more.

Both of the soldiers had been subjected to hard work getting information on Meryl, due to several clerical errors along the way. Eventually, the information was found, and Meryl was no worse for wear. Problems would have been caused if her registration was lost, after all.

The strong female was coming off of the tranquilizer incredibly fast. A dose that would put a human out for five hours kept her under for just below five minutes. Before long, she was standing and talking normally with Redfield and Everson. After allowing Meryl a few minutes to recover, he left thanking the medical officer for a third time. Jay strolled out of the medical wing with his female in tow.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

The RSH pair was locked together in combat, with Jay working with Meryl on her close quarters combat techniques. Jay was being thoroughly whipped by the large female, and was working up enough sweat in the process. Every time he would go after Meryl, a leap or a low lunge at blinding speed would knock him flat on his rear end and be poised for a strike with her killing claws. He trusted Meryl's reflexes to not even come close to hurting him, but he couldn't help but wonder what those claws were capable of.

"Take it like a man, Sergeant!" Meryl shouted victoriously as she pinned Redfield to the mat for the tenth or eleventh time that evening.

"I think not, Delta!" Jay shouted in retort, laughing as he stared up at Meryl's amused eyes.

"Oh? Looks to me like you are out." The Utahraptor said finally, bringing her face close to Jay's and squinting in mock anger.

"You forgot your own first rule." Jay stated as he looked down at Meryl's chest. As Meryl turned her eyes to follow his, she saw the red training pistol placed between the securing kink in her armor. Meryl looked back at him, a look of shameful defeat placed over the smugness.

"I guess when I come up with a plan, I should stick by it." Meryl said as she released Jay from her grasp, fuming at her loss.

"It is an idea, you know. Somebody that's experienced in hunting you will have an easy time with that one. I want to see if I can't find a way to secure that." Jay said, laughing and grabbing his towel from on top of his stuff. With it, he began to dab the sweat from his forehead, where it glistened profusely.

"That is enough for today, Meryl. We are going to form our pack in about an hour and I need your help to get them squared away. We are working with one hundred percent green RSH troops. Until then, fall out and do whatever you need to get done. I will meet you at the drill floor, and afterwards the armorer is supposed to give us your repaired armor." Jay said as he threw the towel over his shoulder and made his way to the washrooms.

"See you then." Meryl replied, and was glad to get rid of the odd temporary armor that she was issued . It was uncomfortable for her after all, as it wasn't custom fitted. One thing that disturbed her was that it had the name 'James' was etched under one of the folds.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

"Stand at," Shouted Redfield with a volume reserved for authority.

"Stand at!" Echoed the platoon sergeant, standing at crisp attention in front of the group of Utahraptors and humans alike. The platoon made up the parent group from which Jay and Meryl would select their first candidates for the pack.

"Ease!" Jay finished, watching the formation relax in the slightest bit.

"Platoon Sergeant, take charge of your troops and prepare them for inspection." Redfield said as the blonde-haired platoon sergeant barked the order to the group.

"Platoon, Attention!" Snapped the sergeant. The soldier, a German by the name of Richter, was positioned next to his Utahraptor at the front of the gathering. Behind him, stood fifteen pairs of RSH guardians and their partners. The group was bathed in the white beams of the several magnesium lights that shone brightly on the drill floor. Through the open electric door, Jay could see several six-bys unloading boxes of provisions into the ASC storage sector. Sergeant Redfield turned his attention from the olive colored trucks and back to his formation.

"Delta 3303, begin evaluation of pack candidates!"

Jay heard the thump of Meryl's heavy footfalls against the floor as she broke rank and headed down the first row of the formation. Jay watched as the female, clad in her repaired armor, padded through the magnesium beams and glanced over the Utahraptors and their Guardians. He could see the white lights shining in her yellow eyes, and her killing claws tapping on the polished concrete floor as she passed along the length of the troop.

Meryl looked at all of the newly armored and shapely candidates, observing every detail of their forms. She mentally calculated everything she saw, including the posture of both the Guardians and their partners. There! Out of the corner of her eye, she found a male that stood more erect than those around him. The male's nametag read:

JERICHO

His powerful neck was arched forward, and his form was paramount to her expectations. Meryl bent her neck down and glanced at his taut thighs with all of the scrutiny of a medical technician. No doubt that this Utahraptor was in prime physical condition.

He had nearly the same markings as Meryl, bearing the same black tiger stripes and tan belly that she herself was known for. The only difference between the two was a black stripe along the length of Jericho's melon, likely gotten there in a fluke of his engineering. She canvassed his tight, woodland pattern Kevlar armor, studying its curves at the points where they molded to his body. Jericho's eyes were of a similar yellow hue to hers, and she noticed that his seemed to have a hidden mischief buried behind them.

Meryl's eyes turned towards his partner, a female soldier wearing Army ACUs and staring straight forward in a tribute to discipline. The Woman's nametag read:

Learn.

Learn had deep red hair, a semi-rounded face, and deep, piercing gray-blue eyes. She was medium in height, and had a respectable, intelligent posture. So far, Meryl had met all of her requirements in these two.

"Looks like we have a winner." She called out, watching as Jay nodded his head in a smiled approval.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The evening was dark and windy, with the clouds going from fluffy and white to dark and forbidding over the course of the afternoon. Jay looked up into the sky as he brushed past Jericho and Learn, nodding and looking back into Meryl's eyes as she sniffed the air. She shook her head, confirming with the other two Utahraptors that shared the space with her that there were no scents present. Jay didn't like it though, the wind was blowing towards the artillery battery, driving any scent away from them.

"Right. Meryl, you and Aud get up ahead a ways and look around. Jericho, I want you and Learn to establish security while I report in. We move from here in five." Redfield said in a hushed voice. He watched Aud as he turned around and gave an acknowledging nod. Aud was a German Utahraptor, and a big one at that. He had several scars on his neck, and muscles that were bulging through his hide. He shared a color scheme that was radically different from Meryl's, with a light brown hide that almost matched his Flecktarn camouflage armor. His eyes were more brown than yellow, an oddity in Utahraptor genetics. His voice was deep, laden with a heavy southern German accent. Hans Richter, his bald-headed, blue-eyed Guardian just about matched him in muscle. The German carried a suppressed SSG that he frequently brought up to his square chin to use the scope as a monocular.

"Hey Redfield, how far do you think we are from the battery?" Learn whispered, coming close to Jay and shifting the suppressed M16 in her hands. He watched her as she flexed her fingers nervously. Learn was also sweating profusely, but aside from these signs, she was showing no trace of nervousness on the outside as she scanned the woods for threats. With her finger resting just outside the trigger guard, Learn looked otherwise calm, cool, and collected.

"Not to far now, we should be coming up on its outer perimeter." Jay said, pulling his RSH-issue PI (pocket index) out of his LBV. Learn tilted her head sideways in thought.

Jay felt the wind against his face as Meryl, Jericho, and Aud all froze and rose their snouts into the air. Jay could see Meryl's nostrils flaring, inhaling more of the scent that spooked them. As they sunk into the grass, Jay, Learn, and Richter all did the same.

Redfield brought up the display screen on the snazzed-up PDA, the GPS coordinates nearly scared him half to death. He produced his map and looked at the present coordinates, then did a double take. The present coordinates put them inside the perimeter as marked on the map.

"Meryl and Aud, I have some bad news. We are inside the artillery battery perimeter!" Jay called up to the pair, watching as Meryl turned around and said something to Aud, then touched the pad on her neck.

"We just picked up the scent. We got four guys up ahead, if you get Jericho up here we can take them." Meryl replied, looking into Jay's eyes and waiting for an answer. Jay looked at Learn, who returned with a nod.

"You got it Meryl, we'll cover you. Richter, move into position and get a bead on those sentries. We will cover them. Jericho, get up to Meryl." Jay said over his radio, watching as everyone got into position. Redfield moved up behind a fallen tree stump and saw the small clearing where he guessed Meryl was going to stage her attack. As he watched, four tiger-clad Russian soldiers wandered into the clearing, weapons slung and at ease. After all, they WERE in friendly territory. Jay overheard Meryl's radio conversation.

"Ok, Jericho, you get the one to our right, I'll go down the center. Aud, you take the pair to the left. I want......" Jay cut it out, ensuring that his weapon was off safe. It was go time.

The first Russian didn't even see Meryl, Aud, or Jericho as they leapt from the brush, taking the men as they stood unawares. Jericho tackled one before he began to relieve himself, slashing him across the face and mauling his chest. Jay watched as Meryl's claws tore through the Kevlar armor of her Russian, just before she sank her killing claw into his sternum. Aud jumped directly onto the first man in his pair, ripping through his chest with his claws. As the first man went down, he saw the second raise his AK-74M towards Meryl's exposed side. With a quick motion, Aud whipped the Russian in the face with his tail so hard that it broke his neck. The man's body settled to the ground and gave a few spasms, then lay still.

As they all relaxed, the only thing that could be heard was the steady moaning of the Russian soldier that Jericho had laid over. With no ceremony, he planted his killing claw into the back of the man's neck, killing him instantly. In all, the whole attack lasted about ten seconds.

"Clear." Came Meryl's shaky voice over the radio as she looked slowly at Jay. He sympathized with her, after all, it WAS her first kill with her own claws. The female had performed flawlessly despite her lack of practical experience. Jay knew Meryl would do anything ordered with dignity, class, and speed.

"Roger that. Everyone, move up." Jay called, watching as Learn and Richter got up from their hiding places and rejoined their Utahraptors.

"Excellent job. Is everybody alright?" Jay whispered, and saw the three nod their heads.

"These Russians are thoroughly dead. They didn't even see them when they were getting attacked." Learn said as she rifled through the Russian's pockets looking for intel.

"I don't think I've ever seen anything like that." Richter said in his very distinct and perfect English. His accent was easy to pick through with the good diction.

"No, definitely not. It sure is......" Jay started to say, but was interrupted by a tremendous crash that knocked him on his butt. He recovered himself, listening to the panging ring in his ears as he looked over at Learn. She was doubled over, bleeding from her right ear and trying to shout something at Jay. She removed a bloody hand from her ear and pointed towards the border. As she did, another equally loud crash sounded from the same area as the last. Branches rained down upon Jay from above, knocked loose by the noise.

Jay watched as another of the blasts shook the very dust out of the trees. Then, Redfield realized what was happening as he smelled the smoke that wafted through the forest. A gigantic flashbulb went off as Jay also saw a muzzle blast over the tops of the trees. The artillery battery had commenced fire! He made a sweeping motion with his hands and broke out into a run, intent on getting behind the big guns. After almost a minute, the six were in visual range of the massive self-propelled 2S19 Howitzers as they kept up their firing concerto.

As they moved up even more, Jay could hear the frantic ASC radio chatter. "ASCDF, Sector six is hit! I need a medic! Roger ASCDF, sector eight, sector nine, and sector one are all hit! Standby!...". The Pack came into visual range.

The Russian gun crews were hard at work, combat jackets off and olive shirts covered in soot and grime from the big guns. A line of Ural trucks were waiting behind them with loads of ammunition and powder, no doubt meant to level the ASC. He could see the sweat glistening on the men as they heft the heavy 152mm shells to the gun loading hoppers. Similarly, next to these events, even more men were loading powder charges onto a separate hopper.

"Okay, it's go time!" Jay thought as he rose his hand into the air, bringing it down in an ark towards the nearest gun crew.

Jay reached for a Fragmentation grenade on his belt. He dropped the M4 on its sling and slid the looped pin from the body of the grenade. Redfield then tossed the small, baseball-shaped object in perfect range fashion into the back of a Ural 4320 carrying powder charges for the 2S19s that was sitting running unattended. He brought the M4 back into position on the commander of the first big gun and put a round through his skull just as the grenade detonated amidst the several tons of powder. The resulting fireball and shock from the explosion nearly bowled Jay over, and he watched as the fireball went skyward in a wisp of gray smoke. The flames from the powder overtook the nearest gun, setting the crew aflame. Redfield heard the suppressed clicks behind him and saw the rounds tear into the crewmen, putting them out of their misery. Aud and Meryl sailed over the flaming wreck of the Ural and onto the second gun crew as they scrambled for their weapons. Aud leapt for a second time and landed on the roof of the 2S19, plucking the commander from his hatch and removing him of the ability to fire his runty little AK74SU carbine. The ability for him to think about doing it went too.

Meryl was stirring it up with the rest of the number two gun crew as the three soldiers went to work on the three remaining assault guns.

Jay ran past Meryl as she worked over a Russian soldier and dove behind the number two 2S19, raising his M4 and snapping a round at a Russian crewman, catching him in the side. They were starting to fire back with their AK74Ss, whipping rounds near Jay and right over Meryl's head. As Jay disappeared behind the howitzer, he saw Jericho ripping the final truck driver from his cab, taking a pistol round to the chest in the process. With Jericho barely even flinching, he gave the soldier a fatal wound with his jaws. The truck looked as if it was shredded.

After proceeding from the line of parked Urals, Jericho leapt into the fifth gun crew's position as Jay popped out and headcapped a Russian soldier. He saw several trails of red mist appear from the area as Jericho completed his grim work.

Richter was at work with the SSG, and it was evident as he brained the commander of the third and fourth 2S19s as they readied the Kord Machine guns on their vehicles. Redfield switched to fully automatic and sprayed the Russian crew of gun three with the M4, nailing all but one, which Learn hit in the heart with her M16.

Jay dumped the empty magazine on his rifle and pulled a fresh stick from the pouches on his waist. Slamming it into the mag well, he readied the weapon and placed it in such a way to cover the areas between the third, fourth, and fifth guns. To his left, Meryl became more erect from her hunched combat status. Aud perched himself on top of the third gun and looked over it curiously. Redfield heard the gun barrels clicking with cooldown, reminding him of the muffler on the car as it sat after running on a long trip.

From dead ahead, he saw a squad of twelve materialize from the forest past the trucks. Jay immediately picked out the blue beret of the colonel.

"The treeline!" Jay yelled as the Russian weapons raised into a firing position. Jay, Learn, and Richter also swung theirs up, but not quite as fast as the Russians. Redfield saw a dozen muzzle flashes as the Russian squad opened fire in ragged fully automatic, cutting hundreds of rounds at them.

The entire time, Jay kept his eye on the blue beret from his cover. He saw the AKM rise as Meryl pounced for a leap. He aimed towards the black beret, but already the sideways muzzle flash stabbed out from the barrel. The throatier cracks punctuated over the din of AK74s.

Jay saw Meryl go down hard.....
