I've always loved the genre of horror, especially those works that were about secret cults, the idea of a bunch of people coming together to perform the most imaginable rituals had always excited me. I've watched a lot of movies, read countless books, and the more I dug myself into the topic the more this idea started digging my mind: I had to find join one. A real one.

So I started doing my research. It started out fairly simple, I just looked up different cults on Google. The thing about most cults is that they really rarely admit that they are cults themselves. The ones that do market themselves usually show themselves as fully innocent smaller religious groups, but those are no fun. I had to find something truly fucked up.

After about an hour of searching, I found a website that proved to be really useful. It was a single page site, white background, black Times New Roman text, with a header at the top: "Known hostile cults active today" Bingo. Below the header was a long list of cults, all below each other. Global Order of Darkness. Friendly Satanists. Runic Sages. Most of these were just plain text, but some of them were blue clickable links. I wondered where these links would take me, could I get a virus?

I scrolled down a bit and decided to click on one of these links. This cult's name only consisted of one word: Symmetry. I nervously brought my pointer over the link and clicked. After a bit of loading, file was downloaded onto my computer, with the name "Symmetry.txt". I opened it, only to find a link inside: "http://z46a7ehsdfiewo54uhi3b424uer5j8fdwetnvdvwsah5q43472oeiku.onion/"

I had just hit the jackpot. I started up Tor browser, the browser you use to access .onion sites on the deep web, and pasted the link. It took me to an old fashioned website, with a black background, a strange red font that looked like blood was dripping from it and a pixelated gif of a burning candle in the corner. The header, written in the same ugly font spelled out the words "The Truth of Symmetry", below it a text box.

"Welcome to the official website of Symmetry. We are a religious foundation, dedicated to bring truth to an enlightened few. If you're here, you're already on the right track.

Who are we? We are the ones in possession of the truth. The truth, that an alternate reality runs along ours. Everything that happens in one reality is perfectly mirrored in the other, every action, thought and feeling. Since the start of time, this reality had existed perfectly along ours, the events in sync, not one second late or early. However this balance had been tipped, and the alternate reality is now slightly behind. If someone travels through and changes anything, the same change will apply to our reality, allowing them to control the past, therefore the present and the future. Our universe is in danger and our world as we know it will never be the same. Our mission is to restore this balance.

If you would like to join our mission, contact us: truthofsymmetry@protonmail.com"

This really caught my attention, and although I did not believe a single word of it, I decided to write them an email.

"Hello! I have accidentally stumbled upon your website and I'm very intrigued! Can you tell me more about the alternate reality?"

The response came just five minutes later.

"Greetings. We cannot tell much about this to outsiders, because that would allow traitors to get to sensitive information. If you are interested, we could arrange a meeting."

I knew this wasn't a very good idea, but my curiosity got the best of me and I replied.

"Sure, where should our meeting be?"

"Do not worry about that. We will arrange it."

That was the last email they sent, and I went to sleep shortly after that.

I woke up to the sound of a bell, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened them up. I was lying on a metal table, hands and feet tied to the four corners. Around me stood around ten people, all in red robes, their faces invisible from the shadow of their hoods. I looked down at myself, realizing I'm completely naked. But even like this, the room felt unbearably hot. Maybe from the candles burning under my table, which I came to notice from the smell that was lingering in the air.

'W-what? H-how did I g-get in here?' I could barely stutter from the shock. 'How did you find me? Why me? I just sent two emails! Hasn't anyone done that before?'

'Quiet now' spoke the shortest of the robe wearers, standing at the other end of my table. 'Don't ask how. The powers of the alternate reality are too complex for you to even begin to understand. Don't ask why, as you will only find out that all the others like you were appointed with the same mission, but failed and died an excruciating death.'

'T-this is not fair! Why don't you do all the dirty work? You seem to have a better understanding of this whatever reality anyway!' I yelled out in fear and frustration.

'You see, we are not of this world. What you call the alternate, we call home. And we need a soul from your world to restore the balance.' The voice sounded raspy, old and dry. He spoke calmly and quietly, just loud enough to make out what he's saying.

'I did not consent to this, I... I wish to see a lawyer immediately!' I said the first thing on my mind to try and save myself, which was only greeted with a slow shake of the head from the mysterious elder.

'Your lawyer, and all the other things of this world you think could save you are all in danger. If you don't go, everything will be lost. It is only a matter of time until evil prevails. For this, I will not drag our time any longer. Brothers, prepare him for the ritual.'

I desperately shook and tugged my hands and feet to try to get away, but with no avail. One of the men grabbed my head and secured it on the table, leaving me unable to move it. The others drew a line along the middle of my body with a burning hot black ink, which they set on fire.

When I was young, I was bitten by a fire ant. It left a slight, burning sensation on my finger which lasted for a few hours. This line of fire felt like thousands of ants were all constantly biting me, one moment passed equaled another thousand bites. I screamed out in pain, tears instantly started streaming from my eyes and down my cheeks. 'STOP IT PLEASE, STOP I BEG YOU, OH GOD PLEASE STOP IT I CANNOT BEAR THIS ANYMORE, I WILL DO ANYTHING FOR YOU I HAVE THE MONEY' I yelled out anything that could come to my mind, eyes closed shut, the muscles in my body convulsing in pain. However this was only the start.

I opened my eyes and from the corner of my view, I saw one of the men holding a flaming hot red piece of metal with his bare hands. He made his way towards me, and before I could process what was happening, he pressed the metal on my forehead.

It was ten times more painful than the fire that was slowly eating up my skin in a tidy straight line, it felt so bad that I literally couldnt make a sound. My tears evaporated from the heat and I just started in front of me with an open jaw, waiting to pass out from the pain. The blissful passing didn't happen however as the iron slowly cooled down to a more bearable temperature, and the tormentor let go of it. That's when I realized that the object was so hot that it burned a hole in my forehead and got stuck in it.

'You have received the key part of your journey, the amulet of symmetry. It allows travel from one reality to the other, and it will be the key of your mission. When I allow you to go, you will be taken to the gate dimension, the dimension that lies between the two realities. You will find an altar there, with a broken amulet on it. Remove the broken amulet and replace it with the one you just got.'

Despite the pain, I tried to pay as much attention to the man as I could, trying to process and memorize everything that was said to me. 'B-but wait, if I put it there... How will I get back?'

'The gate dimension is not so lonely once you get used to it. I am sorry my brother, but this is a sacrifice we must make.' These were the last words that the old man said to me before digging his hands right into the wound that was burned into my body and tearing it apart.

I felt like my very consciousness escaped through that hole in my body, as it was sucked out by some kind of divine force. I looked down as I ascended, wincing in disgust as I saw the men saying a prayer over my torn up, twisted and destroyed body. At least I didn't die! But was I going to be stuck now?

I didn't have much time to think as I suddenly fell to the floor. I looked around and everything was so different. I was standing on a floor of soft clouds, which also served as the ceiling about ten meters above me. The world had a light gray hue, like the color of the sky on a light cloudy day, with beams of light in the distance. I spotted what looked like a golden box in the distance and started making my way to it.

Gravity was slightly weaker than that on earth, I could jump quite high. I realized that I was moving slightly faster when I was in the air, so I approached the box taking huge leaps in the air. After one especially strong jump, I suddenly stopped in the air. Then I started falling... To the ceiling? The whole world felt like it turned upside down as I fell down to what I considered the ceiling just a second ago. Then I realized that this made a lot of sense, since I was really in the middle of the two realities, opposite to each other.

As I finally reached the altar, I saw the broken amulet in the circular hole cut in the middle of the box. I reached in and took it out, throwing it on the ground. And just as I was about to reach up to my forehead and take my amulet out, someone touched me on the shoulder.

'Son, don't you wish to go back to your family?' It was a deep, and calming voice, close to whispering, but I couldn't assign it to any gender. 'Once you take out that medal, you won't be able to go back.' I looked behind and saw a dark figure, humanoid in shape but with no face or characteristics.

'They told me you would destroy our world' I answered, but my voice didn't reflect any anger or fear, just curiosity and calmness.

'If it weren't for me, it would be something else.' I lowered my hand as I quietly listened to his words. 'You see, nothing lasts forever. There will come a time when the last living being will end its breathing. The heat death of the universe is unavoidable. The only thing that will remain is the non material, this place right here. I didn't create this delay for nothing. The more time there is between the two realities, the bigger this gate dimension becomes. I really have to intent of changing the course of life, as those below think. I just wanted to create a safe haven for myself. If you realign the two timelines, this place will cease to exist and the only thing remaining will be the temporary material. You could fix everything and go back to your family, live another forty years and die, forgetting everything that ever happened. Or you could stay here, to spend an eternity with me. The choice is yours.'

With that, he held out his hand to me, waiting for me to take it.
